I felt so much more empowered after reading this book on miscarriage. I have read several and whereas many I found good, this one struck a powerful cord in me! I believe this is due to the fact that an actual doctor wrote this book. He acts concerned for the woman as a whole. He also doesn't patronize with the "just wait and it will happen to you" statements. He seems to truly understand how a miscarriage plays with a woman's mind and emotions. I wish I had him as a doctor after my own 2 losses.
The book that offers answers.......2002-05-17
After suffering two miscarriages and getting no answers or help from my doctor, I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a copy of Dr. Sem's book at the local library. What I got from his book was information that empowered me to make wise decisions about prenatal care and answers to questions I had about my miscarriages. I later had the good fortune to meet Dr. Sem and have him as my obstetrician. I can honestly say he practices medicine unlike any doctor I've met. He is sincere, compassionate, and caring. He also takes time to listen to his patients and to get to know them personally. My husband and I feel very fortunate to know Dr. Sem and can never thank him enough for helping us to have two beautiful, healthy boys. Thank you Dr. Sem for having the courage to share information other doctors don't want their patients to know and for doing everything you can to make every pregnancy count.

Reading this book LITERALLY changed my life! After suffering through 2 miscarriages and being told that I would have to endure a third before my doctors would try any testing, I was enlightened by Dr. Semchyshyn. His book is informative and sensitive. I used the references in it to obtain the names of maternal-fetal medicine specialists in my area (a title which I had previously never heard of). I learned a tremendous amount about the possible causes of my problems and was able carry on an intelligent conversation with the maternal fetal medicine specialist whom I chose for my care. I felt empowered by becoming a well-informed patient and no longer felt at the mercy of the medical establishment with regards to testing. This book gave me information, hope and a sense that I was not alone. Testing revealed that I needed progesterone supplementation in the first trimester and I am now the happy mom of two beautiful, healthy boys.
Gives explanations and instructions.......2001-03-18
I am a owner of the book and a patient of the doctor. I have found that the book offers explanations to problems, offers education of the signs and symptoms that other doctors just ignore and offers alternative instructions to helping your next pregnancy be healthy and explains how every mother-to-be has to become "literate" about all of her body signs and partner with her doctor to ensure a successful pregnancy. Most doctors just want to tell you what to do, have time for limited questions and quickly get you through their busy offices. This is one doctor who truly lives up to the high standards of professionalism he discusses in his book and always tries to answer any questions from patients or worried mother-to-be's with questions from all over the world. After following the instructions in this book and partnering with him during my last pregnancy to become pregnancy literate, I delivered a healthy baby boy in August 1998 and look forward to delivering another healthy child in Sept. of this year. All of his patients only have great things to say about him and the sincerity of his caring about making every pregnancy count. I wish all doctors would be trying to save every pregnancy as much as this doctor does.
How to prevent miscarriage: lie down and take progesterone.......2000-08-11
With one ectopic pregnancy and two miscarriages, I am looking forward to a healthy pregnancy next time. But it won't be thanks to this book. The title is misleading. The main advise is: when you feel or think something is wrong: see your gynecologist, go to bed and try progesterone. After reading te book I can only conclude: there are no ways of preventing a miscarriage. And his so called 97.5% succes rate for bringing healthy babies to term in his high risk pregnancy, is an absolute mysterie to me.

"Unconditional Surrender" Grant makes his reputation.......2001-03-14
Although the battles of the Army of the Potomac in the Eastern Theater garner most of the historical interest, the battles in the West were arguably more significant. In "The Road to Shiloh: Early Battles in the West," David Nevin and the Editors of Time-Life Books cover General Ulysses Grant's campaign in Tennessee in 1861-62. Chapter 1, "The Struggle for Missouri," covers the Battle of Wilson's Creek that proved pivotal for the control of this border state. Chapter 2, "The Go-ahead General," details the path by which Grant came to command the Union Army in the West (including that infamous photo of Grant with a fully cultivated square-cut beard). Chapter 3, "Clash at Fort Donelson," relates how Grant followed up his successfully attack on Fort Henry with an attack that would give the Federals control of the Cumberland River. Chapter 4, "The Devil's Own Day," covers the first day of the Battle of Shiloh, in which the Union army was almost routed one of the bloodiest days of the war; this chapter includes Theophile Poilpot's 400 foot long panoramic painting of the battle for the Hornet's Nest. Chapter 5, "An Incomplete Victory," tells how Grant and Sherman defeated Johnston's Confederate Army. Like all of the volumes in the Time-Life Civil War series, "The Road to Shiloh" provides dozens of contemporary illustrations, photographs, paintings, and the like. My one complaint is that if you read these volumes a lot, and it is hard not to, they tend to fall apart. The cover ends up being a nice gray folder. The rest of Grant's Western Campaign including the siege of Vicksburg is covered in the volume "War on the Mississippi."
Good, basic history of the western Army and Navy battles.......1999-03-16
Time-Life always does a solid job. Great illustrations, readable text, a little short on detail but always entertaining and educational. A good introduction to the early Western actions on the Mississippi, Tennessee, and Cumberland Rivers.

Yet another poor algebra textbook!.......2001-11-09
It's a shame what passes for algebra textbooks these days. This is a prime example. First of all, most intermediate algebra texts (including this one) are filled with color photographs and fancy covers, all of which contribute to the exorbitant price tag, yet are totally irrelevant to the learning of mathematics. The authors should peruse some graduate level math books. Math is done (and always has been done) in black and white. Secondly, I find it amazing that they find it necessary to issue a new edition (this is the 5th ed. mind you) every couple of years or so. I wasn't aware that any new research was being done in elementary algebra. What the authors have done is write ONE textbook, and change a couple of equations, rearrange a few chapters, and voila! Now we have a Beginning Algebra textbook. Compare them sometime. They are virtually the same textbook. We use both books at our college. So the students pay the same [amount]twice for the SAME BOOK! Outrageous! But it gets better. Are you ready? The book(s) isn't particularly well thought out. For example, the authors (like many others) think that to add fractions (or simplify them) one needs to factor the numerator and denominator. That's well and good, provided all the numbers you work with have only 2 digits. I challenge the authors to simplify some fractions with 5-digit numerators and denominators sometime, with factoring as their only tool. Oh yes, they don't even bother to give significant information on HOW to factor: Namely, Sieve of Eratosthenes (to find primes) and use of the square root (to determine when the number is factored.) They wave their hands when it comes to finding the LCM, and the method of finding the GCD is delayed until factoring polynomials. Even then it's FACTORING once again - the most grossly inefficient way to find the GCD. Have they ever heard of the Euclidean algorithm? I assume they have SOME background in mathematics. Applications - part of the title. Let's look at some. Coin/stamp/integer problems are totally contrived. Even the poorest student understands that in the REAL world (the world of applications) one does not start out knowing that he has $4.58 in his piggy bank, and that he has three fewer pennies than five times his number of quarters, and wants to find out how many of each coin he has. No. Where does one realistically get such information? One doesn't. If you want to know how many of each coin, you COUNT THEM, as you must do if you know you have $4.58. The authors should climb down from the ivory tower, and TALK to some people that use mathematics (instead of just taking their photograph.) Then write some real applications. Another complaint: Using graphing to find the solution to a system of equations. Are you kidding me? What if the slopes of two lines disagree by 1/10000000. Graph away and say "parallel". The student (or anyone else) has no way of knowing a'priori that this situation won't arise. What about the degree of a polynomial? The authors mention it in passing, and then move on without discussing any APPLICATIONS (there's that word again) of the concept. You know, like when does one stop with a polynomial division problem? Or, how many solutions does a polynomial equation in one variable have?
I could go on (all day.) In short: forget this one. If you want to learn algebra, without getting a 2nd mortgage on your home, try Schaum's Outlines.

The material in the book is very easy to understand. The chapter test all come with answers in the back of the book so you can check your own work.

Hello. I am an 11th grader in high school and for my algebra II class we are using this book. It's too bad it's not available (I could not buy it) but the book is great. I have understood all the terms used in algebra and I can solve any problem on the book. It has great examples and good definitions. If you are a teacher in look for the book to give a class, buy it... it is great! If you are a student, just like me, and you want to buy it, you won't regret paying what is costs.
