Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Important information for everyone who loves children.......1999-09-13

This book contains startling information that will help our children grow up healthy. I not only read the book myself, but passed it on to my daughter-in-laws to insure the healthiest grandchildren possible. They were releived to see that Dr. Potter not only warned them about toxins that could harm fetuses but what to do in the event that their toddlers had been exposed to any of the dangerous toxins she names. It is obvious from the extensive list of advisors in Dr. Potter's book that she has throughly researched her material. This book is a must read of every woman (and man) who are planning a family.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent and important book.......1999-09-10

The information contained in this book is important to the care and nurturance of babies everwhere. We have embraced a host of chemicals to make our lives easier without understanding how they would impact our most precious assests, our children. This book carefully covers years of research and clearly documents the impact of a variety of chemicals in common use and their impact on pregnacy and early development. Translating this information into language that can be understood by an educated lay public presents quite a challenge to any author. Dr. Potter has done an excellent job in making a complex topic understandable. She doesn't advocate throwing the baby out with the bath water but had faith that humans are smart enough to find ways to accomplish the same goals with safe non-toxic substances. This is the challenge for all of us. Read it!

1 out of 5 stars Enough mis-information to make it unacceptable.......1999-09-03

I was severely displeased with this book. It was filled with bogus facts. Since a great deal of the info was inaccurate, I was hard pressed to trust any of it. Don't waste your time.

          Book Description

From the first European contact with Tahiti in 1767, the myth of the South Sea maiden has endured through many incarnations. Although the maiden frequently provided an idealized antidote to Western women's self-assertion, the South Pacific also afforded a space where boundaries between the sexes could be relaxed and transgressed. From James Cook and Captain Bligh to James Michener and Margaret Mead, the "Island girl" has occupied a special place in the erotic imagination of the West. In a sweeping study that embraces history, literature, visual arts, anthropology and film, this study gives fresh insight into the myths and reality of a Western icon. While women from far off lands have always been presented as exotic and alluring, the South Sea maiden has come to symbolize feminine sexuality, as an integral part of the adventure, sensuality, and romance of the South Pacific. Everyone from early explorers to 19th century writers and artists to latter day anthropologists, film makers, and tourism promoters have extolled their virtues and their bodies. Sturma looks behind the popular cliches to reveal how the myth-making process reflected not only Western desires, but the cut and thrust of changing sexual politics. The result is an intriguing look at both South Sea image-makers and the women whom they found so seductive.

                  Book Description

This textbook provides an introduction to the methods and language of functional analysis, including Hilbert spaces, Fredholm theory for compact operators, and spectral theory of self-adjoint operators. It also presents the basic theorems and methods of abstract functional analysis and a few applications of these methods to Banach algebras and the theory of unbounded self-adjoint operators.

The text corresponds to material for two semester courses (Part I and Part II, respectively) and is essentially self-contained. Prerequisites for the first part are minimal amounts of linear algebra and calculus. For the second part, some knowledge of topology and measure theory is recommended. Each of the 11 chapters is followed by numerous exercises, with solutions given at the end of the book.

The text is ideal for a one-year course. It will also provide a sound basis for further study. It is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in operator theory and functional analysis.

                    Book Description

Dirac operators play an important role in several domains of mathematics and physics, for example: index theory, elliptic pseudodifferential operators, electromagnetism, particle physics, and the representation theory of Lie groups. In this essentially self-contained work, the basic ideas underlying the concept of Dirac operators are explored. Starting with Clifford algebras and the fundamentals of differential geometry, the text focuses on two main properties, namely, conformal invariance, which determines the local behavior of the operator, and the unique continuation property dominating its global behavior. Spin groups and spinor bundles are covered, as well as the relations with their classical counterparts, orthogonal groups and Clifford bundles. The chapters on Clifford algebras and the fundamentals of differential geometry can be used as an introduction to the above topics, and are suitable for senior undergraduate and graduate students. The other chapters are also accessible at this level so that this text requires very little previous knowledge of the domains covered. The reader will benefit, however, from some knowledge of complex analysis, which gives the simplest example of a Dirac operator. More advanced readers---mathematical physicists, physicists and mathematicians from diverse areas---will appreciate the fresh approach to the theory as well as the new results on boundary value theory.

                      Download Description

This work has arisen from lecture courses given by the authors on important topics within functional analysis. The authors, who are all leading researchers, give introductions to their subjects at a level ideal for beginning graduate students, and others interested in the subject. The collection has been carefully edited so as to form a coherent and accessible introduction to current research topics. The first chapter by Professor Dales introduces the general theory of Banach algebras, which serves as a background to the remaining material. Dr Willis then studies a centrally important Banach algebra, the group algebra of a locally compact group. The remaining chapters are devoted to Banach algebras of operators on Banach spaces: Professor Eschmeier gives all the background for the exciting topic of invariant subspaces of operators, and discusses some key open problems; Dr Laursen and Professor Aiena discuss local spectral theory for operators, leading into Fredholm theory.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book on device analytical techniques.......2005-03-19

This book by Prof Yang is an excellent book for people want to know more about piezoelectricity and piezoelectric devices.

It starts with a complete theory of piezoelectricity with the intention to get readers familirize with the fundamentals. This part is complicated from its appearance, but there is a purpose. Such formulation is essential in dealing with complicated issues which discussed in detail later, ie the effect of various bias fields like thermo, stress, acceleration and so on.

After descriptions of the basic nonlinear theory, the chapters followed restore to the linear theory for various strctural elements and applications as devices. It touched almost all applications of acosutic devices with simple analytical solutions.

The methods and techniques are not directly related to the engineering solutions of actual problems, but it is the first step you have to take towards the direction.

I highly recommend this book to graduate students and engineers who are interested in advanced knowledge on this subject.

                            Book Description

The first edition of this well-known book was noted for its clear and accessible exposition of the basic theory of Hardy spaces from the concrete point of view (in the unit circle and the half plane). This second edition retains many of the features found in the first--detailed computation, an emphasis on methods--but greatly extends its coverage. The discussions of conformal mapping now include Lindelöf's second theorem and the one due to Kellogg. A simple derivation of the atomic decomposition for RH1 is given, and then used to provide an alternative proof of Fefferman's duality theorem. Two appendices by V.P. Havin have also been added: on Peter Jones' interpolation formula for RH1 and on Havin's own proof of the weak sequential completeness of L1/H1(0). Numerous other additions, emendations and corrections have been made throughout.
