Interesting read........2007-05-12
This is a nice book. Couldn't beat the price. (I think I paid $0.01, and three or four for shipping). I should have paid closer attention to the title: Getting To Know Your One-Year-Old is *exactly* what this book is. It isn't a parenting book, per se. It simply explains, step by step, what your child may be thinking when they act certain ways, and what might precipitate those actions. It is insightful, but not a tool to guide your parenting skills, necessarily.

Vividly written personal memoir of WWII.......2006-09-01
This is one of the best personal memoirs of World War II that I have read. The author describes combat as seen through the eyes of an American GI artist.
As you read, you will see the glint off the edge of a helmet, feel the ground shake from a nearby shell, and hear the engine of a tank drown out the sound of explosions.
The book offers a stark view of combat during the last days of war in Germany. You will meet the wounded 16-year-old German prisoner who couldn't stop crying. Some of his American captors felt sorry for the boy and plied him with K rations.
You will read about the German medic that the author wounded with a hand grenade. The GIs treated the medic as one of their own when they found grateful letters in his pocket written by captured GIs that he had aided.
Pencil drawings of soldiers accompany the text. The author drew many of these while he was at the front. He protected them in a cardboard mortar tube that he carried wherever he went. Drawing his fellow GIs was his way of paying tribute to them.
Top Notch War Story.......2006-07-26
This is what a military memoir should be - exciting, gripping and totally real. Not only was the author there, but he puts the reader there too, right in the foxhole with him, cold, wet and miserable, and living the terror, with blackened frozen bodies poking up through the snow. War stories do not get any better than this.
Best First Hand Account.......2005-08-27
I have read numerous first hand accounts of World War 2, from both sides, and this was the best. The book was so naturally written and Mr. Foley's graphic descriptions actually made me feel like I was in the Foxhole with him. His story was very moving. Mr. Foley and his generation who risked and gave their lives are truly my hero's. They gave up their innocence so others might be free. Thank you Mr. Foley for what you did, and thank you to the rest of the 94th Infantry division!
Extra Special Personal Memoir........2005-05-24
Extra Special Personal Memoir.
"Visions From A Foxhole" by William A. Foley, Jr. Subtitled "A rifleman In Patton's Ghost Corps". Ballantine Books, NY 2003.
This is the story of a young man, seeking to find himself, while at the same time he is defending his country. His father had served in world War I, and William A. Foley, Jr., is not only learning about himself during his time in the European Theatre of Operations but also about his father's experience in the First World War. Foley, Jr., as a lower ranking soldier, is part of the 94th Infantry Division which went through some heavy fighting, for example, in the Ruhr, crossing the Saar River and then crossing the Rhine River. His written personal recollections are made all the more vivid by his drawings.
Almost for relief, Foley had begun to draw, in pencil on paper, the scenes of war, as he experienced them He realized that he had more talent than most people, so he began to accumulate and protect his drawings from action to action, town to town, river to river. Despite dunkings in rivers, shellings, winter weather and so much more, the author saved most of his drawings and presented a selection in this book. These contemporary drawings confirm the harshness of the battle. The drawings combined with his written words makes this an extra special personal memoir. The author also has a web site, tied in with the title of the book.
Just as an aside, my Professor in Historiography once stated that "Spell checker" has ruined many an editor. On page 139, the book states that the author "...sneaked a peak {sic}"... while in other pages of the book, he was sneaking a "peek", the proper spelling for looking discretely. On page 209, the Greek letter "Pi" appears before the date "16 March". Spell Checker ignores Greek Letters. Don`t let this distract from your enjoyment of this excellent book. ...
A,true picture of my war.......2005-05-14
My name is Russell Bryant. I was a rifleman B company, 376th regiment, 94th division at the same time as Mr Foley. My war didn't last as long as Foley's as I was seriously wounded in a boat trying to cross the Saar river on 23 February, l945. I saw action around Sinz, took part in the marching fire attack that took Banholz Woods and the attack on the far end of Munzingen Ridge. Mr Foley's drawings more accurately portray the faces and eyes of front line riflemen than any that I have seen. His narrative descriptions of war seem to me to be very accurate. I was deeply moved as I read and re-read the book. I
find ilt strange that some who claim to have their own very unusual experiences find it necessary to criticize some of Foley's experiences. It was my experience that the "unusual" in combat is really the usual. I have given copies of the book to many people who are very interested in "our war" every single one of them expressed their praises. Thankfully, Mr. Foley did not attempt to write a broad "history" of WW11. We have many of those with their broad views and sweeping generalities. Thank you Bill Foley for showing the true story of individuals who literally "ground" out the war.

Ignorance shouldn't speak.......2004-09-26
I have had the privilege of knowing two of the men mentioned in the book and they have nothing but the greatest of respect for this man. They speak of him with an awe and respect that after reading the book was obviously well deserved. The fact that the man was able to do most of his most difficult skills well into his 70's is a tribute to the life journey and wisdom that he had earned through his vast experience and ceaseless dedication to study. I have lived long enough and have had sufficiently varied experiences enough to know that the feats listed in the book, while difficult and requiring a great deal of skill, are not impossible. Does the obviously young man think that the reputable magazines and newspapers of the day would have wasted their time validating the exploits of a fraud?
The book was well written, vastly entertaining and opens up endless possibilities of human potentials for those wise enough to realize they don't know everything. For those who may not immediately recognize the author's name, this was the creator of the television series "Kung Fu."
"It is better to be thought a fool than to open ones mouth and remove the doubt"
A guide for all.......2004-05-07
Yosselle was one of the greatest teachers of all time, to have such a close minded fool as Bart Mandelschwitz with possibly no comprehension of the power of the mind or the energy force that is human life, to call him a liar proves his inability to understand anything other than what's "scientifically" correct. Ha. I'm sorry my friend but there's too much in this universe "science" dosent have an answer for. While he sits in his bedroom playing with his calculator, I recommend an approach to this book with an open mind to get a better understanding of the power of thought and positive will.
It has enhanced my life 10 fold and I have never looked back.
No way!.......2004-01-06
This was a big sack of lies! There is just no way he did the things he said! Joe was a liar and a disgrace to Judaism. He said that he was tarred and feathered and shot in the forehead... and was fine... what a lie! The bullet ended up smashed... lol. Or that he pulled a plane with his hair. That just can't happen! Hair is not strong enough! Not for anyone! Don't waste your time with this phoney.
Must read for Martial Arts and Jewish interest groups.......2003-06-06
An excellent book. The subject was a "Strongman" performer and wrestler in the thirties and forties. But more than just feats of strength, he was a dietician, herbalist, inventor and psychologist. A devout Jew, he was a fundraiser for charitable causes too.
What makes this such a good read is that the subject had an incredible life, starting out as a weak sickly child and ending up as the strongest man in the world. It contains tales of physical prowess, and more than that, of mental strength and the developement of "chi" before Martial Arts had caught on in America in a big way.
I've read it countless times and will continue doing so. A source of inspiration and common sense.

Customer Reviews:
Incredibly inspiring!.......2006-03-14
If I could own only two books, one would be my Bible and the other Ed Spielman's remarkable biography of Joe Greenstein, a.k.a. The Mighty Atom.
Here was a man who exalted in life, exuded life and understood life far, far better than most.
Do you have problems in life? Who doesn't? After you read this book you will be able to take to heart the words of the Atom's protege, Slim Farman: "I never had to prove to him that I was somebody. He told me I was."
And the words of Joe Greenstein himself: "There is no such thing as a little man, and nothing is impossible."
Whatever it takes, GET A COPY OF THIS BOOK!
Essential, Excellent and Inspirational.......2005-09-07
Ever heard of man bite through tempered iron with his teeth...or hang from an airplane by his hair? Just because you may not have heard of Joseph "Mighty Atom" Greenstein or his accomplishments it does not mean you should ignore this book, quite the opposite in fact. I got this book as a young child in the 1980's and have read it many times. A riveting and inspirational read. Anyone interested in sports, martial arts, nutrition, spirituality or just looking for a self help guide would be wise to read this. A fascinating life with lessons for all of us...not just philosophical but practical too. Joseph Greenstein was not only the strongest man in the world, he was a giant of a character...raising a large family and much money for charity, providing health lectures and products for thousands of poor Americans. If I had just ten books on a desert island this would be one of them.
A Tall Man, The Strongest in the World..........2005-09-03
In his prime, Joseph Greenstein was the world's "strongest man" physically and billed as 'The Modern Hercules,' 'The Young Sandow," and 'The Ancient Samson' all in one -- The Mighty Atom, though he never did fly out of a canon. He rose from the ghettos of Poland, in Eastern Europe, to become the most famous of the weightlifter-strongmen ever.
He was a slim 5'4" body builder, weighing in at 145 pounds; the photo shows him as a young man showing off his becepts. In vaudeville at the Apollo Theatre he was billed as Joseph Green. He looked like a freak in bushy hair and Tarzan outfits complete with matching headband and funny looling shoes which strapped up his leg to the knee. That must have been the style in 1909. In his act, he straightened out hourshoes, crushed spikes in his hands, even had strong teeth -- bit through iron bars.
He used Asian techniques of concentration, Jewish mystical writings, and a natural begetarian diet. Who said it akes eating meat to make one strong? He later developed a more balanced body physique. Joseph appeared on Coney Island, the playground of the world, as shown in the movie, 'Inside Daisy Clover.' At Madison Square Garden he put on a martial arts show.
We all have an inner strength with the potential of a brick-wall. It doesn't take meditation to surpass hurdles, but a strong-as-iron determination to prove you're right. When I started out in PTA as a young mother, 5'l", 97 lbs., as a local unit president, I was given the honor and silver platter from the female school principal who called me a "brick-wall." Unlike those who preceded me, I did not acquiese to her rein over fund-raising profits. We paid for necessary items such as a paved area and playgfround at the school but would not finance building repairs -- that was the responsibility of the school board. I learned my speaking ability by appearing before them (and getting my way through friendly persuasion) on occasion, and conducting the PTA Meetings. As Regional Director, I visited and informed units throughout thirteen counties, which included the famous Tullahoma, Tennessee -- near Lynchburg.
Joseph was such a sensation that articles about him appeared in 'The Sun,' 'New York Journal,' 'New York American,' 'New York Telegram,' and 'New York Post,' as well as 'Buffalo Evening Times.' He proved that sometimes little is big and here's great strength in small packages.
Finally acknowledging his Jewish heritage, in 1978, he appeared with his protege, Slim Farman (who towered over him), in a black tunic with a Star of David over the chest. He was an old man, age 85, with white hair, beard, and mustache. He had achieved "the impossible."
An amazing book.......2005-06-02
I simply can't say enough good things about this incredible story. If you love weight-training and strength sports, if you want a snapshot of a nearly forgotten part of early 20th Century American life, if you wish to be inspired, read this. You will not be disappointed.
A truly amazing story.......2005-06-01
My good friend, knifemaker and martial artist, Ernest Emerson reccomended this book to me. All I can say is, "WOW!"
This is one of those books that will change your life and the way you lok at things. A blend of the old world and the new.
As one reviewer said, this would make an excellent movie. It's the story of a virtuous man and his relationship with his family and God and the amazing things he could do in spite of his small stature.
Unfortunately the book is out of print and the high prices reflect that. It is still worth it nonetheless! Grab a copy if you can find it!

Book Description
Marie Corelli lived in the time or Darwin, and took real exception to the intellectual incursions then being made on territory previously reserved to matters of faith. In its way, it's a sad thing: in _The Mighty Atom_ a gifted writer rails against the evidence of man's senses. There may be -- we'd say there are -- ways to reconcile the eternal with the evidence of our senses. But surely a harangue in the cloak of fiction is not the way to do it; rather more by railing at the dark she teaches folks to find the intellectual courage to step into it. Regardless, Corelli was a gifted writer, and whether the tale she tells here is the one she intended or not, she tells a fine and interesting tale. (Jacketless library hardcover.)

Then, look at our sun!--we should not be able to live without it,--but there are millions of other suns and systems,--all separate universes. Now if all these things are atoms, and are designed by an Atom,--where is it?--that wonderful little First Atom which, without knowing in the least what it was about, and with nobody to guide it, and having no reason, judgment, sight or sense of its own, produced such beautiful creations? And then, if you are able to tell me where it is, will you also tell me where it came from?"

Insightful Look into Corelli's Spirituality........2005-10-04
This book is a direct affront to the "High Decadence of the Yellow Nineties" and their moral deconstructions. Marie, although decadent and florid in much of her style and philosophy of writing, is at the same time rather morally strict in her own views of ethics and rules of conduct - especially in regards to spirituality.
A rather entertaining read if you have read her novels. Sort of makes you wish you could sit down and have a proper tea with the old gal and really get inside her head!
Book Description
The pioneering genius of Japan's "God of Comics," Osamu Tezuka (1928âÂÂ89), is examined through his life's masterwork:
Tetsuwan Atomu, also known as
Mighty Atom or
Astro Boy, a comic series featuring a cute little android who yearns to be more human. The history of
Tetsuwan Atomu and Tezuka's role in it is a road map to understanding the development of new media in Japan and the United States. Topics include Tezuka's life, the art of animation, the connection between fantasy robots and technology, spin-offs, and
Astro Boy's cultural impact.
Frederik L. Schodt is a translator and author of numerous books about Japan, including
Manga! Manga! and
Dreamland Japan. He often served as Osamu Tezuka's English interpreter.
Customer Reviews:
A book every anime/manga fan needs to read.......2007-08-31
I just happened upon this book when I was shopping for manga and thought it looked like a good read. Well, it's a great read! Finally a book in English about Tezuka!
Schodt does an amazing job breaking down Mighty Atom/Astro Boy along with Tezuka. He actually knew Tezuka so he brings a great insight to this work. The images in the book are great as well, especially the color inserts at the beginning of the book. Included are a great index of all the manga and anime episodes, and a character guide with both Japanese and English character names.
If you are a fan of anime, manga, or both, you will want to read this book to know why the two art forms are so popular today, not only in Japan, but all across the world!
Made in Japan.......2007-08-02
I don't think the onslaught of Japanese pop culture would not take fruition if not for the talented work of Osamu Tezuka. He influenced his country men for many generations and his manga books are still published today and are fresh as they were printed over 60 years. The man has left a mark on more artists/animators than Walt Disney ever did. Frederik L. Schodt delves into the framework of this genius who set the blueprint to all manga and anime that we are used to. If not for Osamu Tezuka, I think Japanese manga and anime would be dormant, as with the Beatles a slew of bands followed them, but there was only one Beatles and they will always be standing tall in their heap in the part pop culture as will Osamu Tezuka will be for the Japanese culture, his name is under every breath of new creation that comes from that part of the world and has crossed oceans with his universal ideas and will leave a giant imprint for many more years yet to come.
