Book Description

Many people set out to achieve a big dream, such as starting a business or writing a book, but when they don't succeed right away, the dream fades. Often, these people have plenty of talent and expertise related to their particular dream, but those skills, which authors Paul Levesque and Art McNeil call "microskills, " are usually not enough. Dreamcrafting identifies and teaches the five "macroskills" -- aspiration, motivation, projection, inclusion, and application -- people need to make any dream a reality.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best, if not THE best.......2006-02-19

I seldom write reviews, but in the case of 'Dreamcrafting' I'm compelled to make an exception. Over the past few years, I've read them all, the classics and the also rans. Without doubt this is a contender for first place in the success-self/help literature stakes. Why? Because the process is demystified, clarified and amplified with NO HYPE AND NO BULL!

At the heart of the book is an explanation of how attitudes towards making dreams come true are conditioned by a severely pessimistic society/culture - how expectations really do influence outcomes. There's also a discussion on how to maintain motivation over the long haul and gaining support from others.

If you're serious about living with passion, this book is not just a must read, it's an essential toolkit. It will show you that whatever your dream, the realisation of the dream is down to developing skillpower, not willpower. An intelligent and perceptive take on the subject and destined to become a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2004-01-06

Dream Crafting is a well written guide which supports the notion that each of us has great potential. It delivers a step by step approach which one can apply to manifest dreams. This practical method promotes alignment of goals and visions which can lead to great accomplishment. I throughly enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to those seeking to actualize their true potential.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect 4 those who don't know! Perfect for those who forgot.......2003-12-13

Unlike many other books in this genre, I found Dreamcrafting an easy read; great humor, great advice, great logic, and great directions. There is a lot of truth in this book, I think everyone will recognize how simple acheiving their dreams can be--after reading Dreamcrafting, it's only a matter of "DOING". This book is PRACTICAL, INSPIRATIONAL, and easily RECOGNIZABLE. It is PRACTICAL in the sense that there are only 5 macroskills the reader must keep in mind. It is INSPIRATIONAL because, not only have the authors acheived their dreams, but they show how historical figures used these skills to acheive theirs. And finally it is RECOGNIZABLE in the sense that every reader can, and will, either recognize the things that are holding him back from acheiving, or the things that he is already doing right.

Many people go through life with big dreams, but can't seem to get there. Others may have acheived their dreams using these macroskills without ever knowing it, but over time they change, or acheive that one dream and forget how to aspire. This book offers practical advice on how to break habits that are killing your dream, and then how to build new ones that will bring you to where you want to be.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has a dream. This book has helped me to see how I acheived in the past, and how I can continue to acheive in the future.

5 out of 5 stars This book is helping me make my dream come true........2003-06-10

This book works. It is a down to earth guide that has already had an impact on me. I followed the process and found an answer I've always had trouble with...how to fit my dream of starting a business into all the responsibilities I have as the mother of two boys.
What's practical about Dreamcrafting is that being busy is taken into account. Giving gifts to my future self, time relaease motivators, being my own nay sayer...just a few of the really great suggestions. Living with one foot in tomorrow makes so much sense. After reading the book, I realized that I was being hooked to yesterday (fear).
I'm referring this book to friends and by writing this review (a first for me) I guess I'm recommending it to you. Dreamcrafting is easy to read but more importantly really practical and exciting to implement. I've transformed what was a cloudy fantasy into a well defined dream that's on its way to becoming a reality. I'm feeling better about day to day commitments because I've let go of many things that weren't really necessary. And like the book promised, I'm starting to grow by letting go.
Once my dream was focused, the proposed next steps just fell into place. So far so good.

5 out of 5 stars Dream Crafting.......2003-03-22

Dream Crafting gave me EXACTLY what it said it would on the cover of the book! Not only does it help in defining a precise dream, but gives you the basic 5 skills to achieve it. Like most everyone else, I have read several books on dreams, goals, and how to achieve them, but I really ENJOYED this book. It was not a chore to "get through", nor does it confuse the issue either, making the reader struggle to get anything out of it. Dream Crafting not only covers all the basics, but goes SEVERAL important steps further! It imcompasses total issues that I didn't realize were missing until I read it! Has your life drastically changed since the last book you've read on dreaming big, the how, what and why?? Are you any closer to YOUR dream since reading it???? I sincerely urge you to read one more book on the subject! DREAM CRAFTING! It covers it all..and goes further than that by drawing YOU into the equation.

5 out of 5 stars Flying the Jug.......2007-06-08

Republic's P-47 Thunderbolt was a WWII monster of a fighter. Fast, well armored, with heavy firepower, it was a nightmare for its lighter opponents. One of America's leading aces of the European theater, Robert Johnson, takes the reader on combat missions where the outcome is always tenuous. Through 1943 and into 1944, the P-47 was our frontline escort fighter until the P-51 arrived, with its longer range capability. But it was the "Jug" that chewed up Hitler's Luftwaffe and led the way to the air superiority that made the Normandy invasion possible.

Major Johnson came out the victor over 28 opponents and his story as told here is one of valor and determination on both sides of this awesome conflict. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Thunderbolt Ace Of Ace's -Robert Johnson Get It Now !.......2006-04-10

As someone who has never been tested in the air...I have nothing but admiration for those who have and excelled. What it must have been like to get up at dawn and know that today might be your last? I can not imagine the strength of character those like Robert Johnson must have had?
This book is fantastic ...the Thunderbolt was a massive airplane and took skill and courage to fly over europe in weather that most pilots today would not even go up in period ...even with all kinds of radar and instruments that are the norm today. Read this book and honor a man to who we owe a huge debt. The book is one of finest written about the subject and you will feel as though you are there in the cockpit living it along with Robert!
I am humbled by the courage of those like Robert and this book brings all that in clear focus!Buy it and you will not put it down!

4 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2006-01-06

No matter what you say, the best WWII fightyer pilot memoir ever written was The Big Show, by Pierre Clostermann. That said, Johnson comes as a close competition. Written with the aid of Martin Caidin, it is a gripping book.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST book I have read.......2005-03-30

Thunderbolt! was the absolute best book I have read. Why? A good question, it is an extrodinary story of a man and the war that changed the world. This book focuses on world war 2, I am very eager to learn more about the causes and effects of the war, this book helped me learn alot more about fighter planes, and warfare of the U.S and Germany during that time period, (1942-1945) it also had alot of things that you could picture in your mind. "Thunderbolt" is defnitly not for young readers, it has many challinging words, and it was kind of hard to understand. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this book a 10.

5 out of 5 stars WW II Air Combat.......2005-01-28

A great book. It contains one of the most intense aerial combat descriptions I've ever read. It will tire you to read what one Fock-Wolf does to Johnson's Thunderbolt, and his struggle to keep his tattered plane flying.

        4 out of 5 stars A nice book that covers a lot.......2006-03-15

I'm studying biophysics and I recently bought the book "Systems Biology
in Practice". It is quite expensive, but I wanted to read up about Systems
Biology, since we currently discuss this in our Bioinformatics lectures.

The book consists of three major parts, the first contains three introductory
chapters about biology, mathematics and experimental techniques, the second
is the main part which contains 8 chapters that describe mathematical models
of many different biological processes like gene expression, biological
oscillations or signal transduction pathways. The last part has two chapters
that deal with databases and software tools that are available over the
        internet.

I personally found the "Biology in a Nutshell" chapter very helpful, since
my biological knowledge had several gaps and the chapter is a very condensed
presentation of the most important biological facts. I think it is also
the main aim of the three chapters about biology, mathematics and
experimental techniques to provide people coming from different fields with
some basic information about those topics.

All in all the book covers a large variety of different topics and the models
and information is presented with helpful examples and figures, so that I
find it quite entertaining to read.

My only point of critique is that I'm still not sure what systems biology is,
since there seems to be no generally accepted definition. However, I found
the book very useful to understand mathematical modelling of biochemical
systems and I use it often as reference book.

1 out of 5 stars I can not recommend this book!.......2006-01-23

I thought a while before I started to write this review about how many points I should give. Does it realy deserve zero points? In my opinion, yes! (the rating system does not allow zero points)

I bought this very expensive book, written by five authors, and had so far no fun reading it nor does it provide valuable insights about currently the hot topic in biology. Let me just give some examples to make my point clear. First, not all chapters are written equal good/bad but differ. This implies that the five authors separated the chapters under each other. Chapter 4, "Experimental Techniques in a Nutshell" represents probably the negative highlight of the book. The author who has wirtten this chapter refuses persistenly to come to the point. I have to admit that it is almost impossible to explain mass spectromety, RNAi or DNA chips comprehensible if one has only one page for each of these topis. But is this not clear beforehand? This is a general problem of the book. It covers a huge list of differnt topics but the explanations of each topic is only shallow. Further examples for this: Baysian Networks, one page. Multiple linear regression, one page. Cell Cycle, one page. Ok, now we found a general law according to this the book was written. Compile a list of buzz words, order them in a meaningful way, and wirte one page to each of those terms. Finally, lets call it "Systems Biolog" and we are done. I don't think so, that's not it!

The only people this book could be useful for are undergraduate students who know nothing at all about this subject and want to get an overview about the topics collected under the phrase systems biology. But even for this reason one can not really recommend this book because it is far too expensive.

A final remark. It is clear, that books above the 100$ threshold deserve to be evaluated stronger because it hurts too buy them. If this book would cost 20$ I would give one point.

          Book Description

Poor data quality can seriously hinder or damage the efficiency and effectiveness of organizations and businesses. The growing awareness of such repercussions has led to major public initiatives like the "Data Quality Act" in the USA and the "European 2003/98" directive of the European Parliament.

Batini and Scannapieco present a comprehensive and systematic introduction to the wide set of issues related to data quality. They start with a detailed description of different data quality dimensions, like accuracy, completeness, and consistency, and their importance in different types of data, like federated data, web data, or time-dependent data, and in different data categories classified according to frequency of change, like stable, long-term, and frequently changing data. The book's extensive description of techniques and methodologies from core data quality research as well as from related fields like data mining, probability theory, statistical data analysis, and machine learning gives an excellent overview of the current state of the art. The presentation is completed by a short description and critical comparison of tools and practical methodologies, which will help readers to resolve their own quality problems.

This book is an ideal combination of the soundness of theoretical foundations and the applicability of practical approaches. It is ideally suited for everyone – researchers, students, or professionals – interested in a comprehensive overview of data quality issues. In addition, it will serve as the basis for an introductory course or for self-study on this topic.

                Book Description

Systems: Concepts, Methodologies and Applications Second Edition Brian Wilson Department of Systems and Information Management Lancaster University, UK The result of many years' experience, this book, now extensively revised and updated, emphasizes the application of systems concepts and methodologies that have been developed at Lancaster University. In particular the book is about problem solving and the relationship between theory and practice. Complementary to Systems Thinking, Systems Practice by Peter Checkland (Wiley, 1981), which has become a classic in the field, this book shows how systems ideas can be used to cope with real-life problems. Reviews of the first edition— … an excellent book which provides a synthesis of the action-research undertaken by the well-known Department of Systems, University of Lancaster … Wilson's lucid style of writing and the historical perspective of the Lancaster learning experience provide a strong contextural case for the concept of a human activity system to investigate `badly-defined' [Checkland's `soft'] systems. Chris Beaumont, Journal of the Operational Research Society, January 1985 … This volume, expertly compiled by Brian Wilson, is the latest and probably the clearest statement in book form of the philosophy of that department [Department of Systems, University of Lancaster] … a volume which deserves to be read … E. R. Carson, Kybernetes, 12, 1985 … Systems: Concepts, Methodologies and Applications is Wilson's account of his professional life at Lancaster since then (1966). His careful reflection on the work of so many years deserves attention. Trevor Williams, Futures, December 1985
