TRULY HOLY SPIRIT BREATHED.......2005-10-04
While so many clergy are running from this wild fire that is destroying so many souls, Dr. Williams chose to suit up in the Armor of God and attacked this problem head on. This book is very timely for a world that is caught up in its own devices, seeking to fulfill its desires at any cost. Dr. Williams' book is written so plainly that from the person that doesn't know God to the person that is elite in his status with God will know that this life style is wrong and it will kill you and those you love. Thank you, Dr. Williams for being bold in your presentation but gentle in providing the solution to this life style.
5 Stars is not ENOUGH!!!!!.......2005-09-30
Finally we are speaking as we should. BOLDLY. Pastor Williams only God could have directed you to write such a direct and meaningful book. The concept has been greatly overlooked until now. You have faced the issue in the way God has asked, we as Christians, to face all of life's issues. With HIS WORD. That is the only True answer. Romans 8:13.....God Bless
Enlightening.......2005-09-28
Pastor Dr. Gary L Williams Sr's book is both timely and tenacious in dealing with this horrendous issue! It not only deals with this awful epidemic infecting the minds of men trapped in this lifestyle, but it also offers solid solutions to help anyone struggling with this stronghold. Whether you are caught up in this lifestyle or just wish to help someone that is, this book is a must read. No library is complete without it!
The unadulterated truth!.......2005-09-07
In today's society, it is common to hear or see particular behaviors that truly do not line up with the Word of God. The "blind-eye" notion must become a reaction of the past. As a true Christian, we must all stand on God's written Word. Dr. Gary Williams, Sr. has directed our attention to a very serious demonic underground epidemic that is completely sweeping this nation. In his book, "Deliverance from the Down Low", he outlines a very pragmatic prescription for "deliverance". Praise God for a man of God who takes a stand on righteousness! "Deliverance from the Down Low" is not only educational but shares biblical scriptures that confirms God's plan for our lives. Definitely a must read!
Dr. Will Keeps It Real!.......2005-08-27
In a sea of opinion and propaganda it is often difficult at best to find the unadulterated truth. But God promises that He would never be without a witness. Dr. Williams with this book serves as that witness! He stands on biblical truths and practical real life applications, to masterfully weave together a strong life line with this book, that can and will serve as the life line of deliverance to any and all who struggle with their sexuality or any habitual sin. This book is more than just another book that highlights the alternatives to bisexuality, homosexuality, or even sinful living. "Deliverance From the Down Low" exhalts God as the ultimate healer of all of mankinds deepest ills; therefore it also servers as an indictment before God for all who ignore it's message!

ASIN: 1591140048 |
Book Description
The first special service forces of World War II were known as the Devil's Brigade. Ferocious and stealthy combatants, they garnered their moniker from the captured diary of a German officer who wrote, "The black devils are all around us every time we come into line and we never hear them." Handpicked U.S. and Canadian soldiers trained in mountaineering, airborne, and close-combat skills, they numbered more than 2,300 and saw action in the Aleutians, Italy, and the south of France.
Co-written by a brigade member and a World War II combat pilot, the book explores the unit's unique characteristics, including the men's exemplary toughness and their ability to fight in any terrain against murderous opposition. It also profiles some of the unforgettable characters that comprised the near-mythical force. Conceived in Great Britain, the brigade was formed to sabotage the German submarine pens and oil storage areas along Norway's coast, but when the campaign was cancelled, the men moved on to many other missions. This World War II tale of adventure, first published in hardcover in 1966 and made into a movie not long after, is now available in paperback for the first time. 25 photographs. 10 line drawings. Paperback. 6 x 9 inches.

Wonderful, firsthand account of a remarkable group of men during WWII. This book really needs to be read as a supplement to the unit's other history, but because of the historical impact this unit made (actually both during the war and after the war, i.e. many of these guys gave us our wonderful ski resorts of today), it needs to be added to your collection. I enjoyed this read and highly recommend.

With the Black Devils: A Soldier's World War II Account With the First Special Service Force And the 82nd Airborne
ASIN: 1596872187 |
Book Description
They were the shock troops of the American Army. In their ranks were lumberjacks, miners, skiers--men from the United States and Canada, accustomed to hardship and living on their own. Their training was extraordinary: forced marches of 100 miles in the Montana wilderness with 50-pound backpacks was typical. Weapons training was equally rigorous and the men became as dangerous with their hands and a knife as they were with rifle and machine gun. In Italy they became the unit called to accomplish the impossible. At Monte Cassino, and at Anzio, they earned the respectful accolade from their German enemies. In this book, the men of the First Special Service Force tell the full story of their unit, regarded as the parent of the Green Berets.

Simply extraordinary!.......2006-03-20
My grandfather served with the Devils Brigade, and since knowing that I wanted to learn more about this extraordinary elite unit of WWII. What I found was perhaps one of the best oral recount's of one of the finest units to ever exist. Having grown up in East Helena (3 miles east of Helena, Montana) and working at one point out at Ft. William Henry Harrison, this book gave me a new found respect for my grandfather and the great men who served in the First Special Service Force. Having finished the book I passed it on to my grandfather and he couldn't let it go. Driving by Memorial Park in Helena and watching the American and Canadian Flags both flying next to the First Special Service Force memorial, day and night, 365 days a year, I can't help but utter a simple, "thank you" everytime I go past it to those that are still living and those that perished for the freedom they helped provide for both countries.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a greater depth of knowledge of this elite unit, or for the military buffs who wish to learn about or learn more of this outstanding unit!
Interesting and Compelling.......2006-03-17
My grandpa happened to pass away about 6 years ago, and he happened to be a part of the Black Devil Brigade. His accounts are in this book, his name is Fred Hubbard, and throughout the book he moves from a 2nd LT to a Captain. The funny thing is, I married a man who just commissioned into the army as a 2nd LT. and will soon be deploying. It is amazing to hear the story of what my grandfather when through captured in a book. The things these men endured for our freedom will always amaze me. I will always wish that I spent more time picking my grandpas brain while he was alive, but I am thankful to have this book to remember these things. This book really captures the essence of what these men went through, and what began what is the special forces today.
Excellence Continued.......2004-01-27
Mr. Springer may have been initially motivated by the desire to honor his uncle (killed serving with the First Special Service Force) but his work honors all who served in that unit. One seldom sees an oral history which tells the story of a unit so well. All the contributions by unit members tell the story without the distractions often found in other compilations. Always engaging, you just don't want to put the book down. Not only does one learn about the unit and individuals who made up that unit but one also learns about the equipment used, how it was acquired, and the soldiers' opinions of its performance. An amazing amount of information presented in a way that also entertains and honors the men who served.
A true tribute.......2003-12-07
Hats off to Joe Springer....! He did the men of 5-2 and the FSSF an honor. My father was a Lieutenant in 5-2 FSSF and one of the main characters of the book, and Joe's Uncle was one of my father's NCO's who was KIA on Anzio. The personal accounts in the book may sound far fetched and exaggerated. However, this is far from the truth. The exploits of the men of the FSSF are a matter of record. Every man who served in the FSSF is a very unique individual. I got to know many of these gentlemen over the years by attending the annual FSSF reunions. And yes, what an honor and a privilege to just meet and speak with them about WWII and life in general. Every man in the FSSF willingly, and knowingly volunteered to join a unit where the odds of being accepted in the unit is less than 20%, and your chances for survival were even less. Thank You Joe for getting my father to open up regarding his experiences during WWII for your book. It also meant so much to him to honor the men in his command who were taken, that were not only soldiers/warriors, but true friends forever.

Book Description
The usefulness and political implications of Area Studies programs are currently debated within the Academy and the Administration, where they are often treated as one homogenous and stagnant domain of scholarship. The essays in this volume document the various fields' distinctive character and internal heterogeneity as well as the dynamism resulting from their evolving engagements with funders, US and international politics, and domestic constituencies. The authors were chosen for their long-standing interest in the intellectual evolution of their fields. They describe the origins and histories of US-based Area Studies programs, highlighting their complex, generative, and sometimes contentious relationships with the social science and humanities disciplines and their diverse contributions to the regions of the world with which they are concerned.

An Oldie, but well worth it..........2007-09-24
I bought this book because Bertrand Russell Quotes it extensively (and, I believe, uses it even more) in his wonderful "Religion and Science".
This book was published in the late 1800's and it shows in its style which to me (a non-native English speaker) is a bit hard to follow. Nevertheless I strongly recommend it. It details how both Protestant and Catholic clergy opposed many of the scientific discoveries we now take for granted because they did not agree strictly with scripture.
Unbelievably to me, the author manages to keep his faith and claim that proving the bible wrong actually enhances religion...
The notes are extensive and provide huge amounts of sources (but they are very hard to read.)
One curious thing: Since at that time "gentlemen" studied Latin, there are many quotations without a translation.
An exercise in error........2006-06-12
Just another atheist with an axe to grind. He puts words in the mouths of famous persons that are the opposite of what these authorities actually said he distorts and places in improper context many others. The one that really got my goat was when he stated that Thomas Aquinas said the earth was flat when what actually was said was a quote from Psalms that ws used by Aquinas to teach that we must not take scripture as always factual.
Historians of science have long dismissed White.......2006-03-31
I am in a Master's program in Science and Religion. The facts are, White was the first president of Cornell University. Cornell was the first secular institution of higher learning in the US. White was resisted because of his desire to make the University purely secular; in response he wrote this polemic specifically against religion. He misrepresents history on many counts. For example, he quotes the mythical account of Columbus' alleged conversation with Ferdinand and Isabella about sailing to the New World to show the earth is round. I was taught that myth in grade school, only realizing in the last few months that this is a fable. Washington Irving is the one that made the story up about Columbus, White quoted him, and the fable has been perpetrated since. White has been used to perpetuate the myth that the Christian Church held that the earth is flat, which is again completely false. No serious historian of science today accepts the conflict thesis between science and religion, and no one in the field accepts White as anything more than historical curiosity. While the book might inflame people already predisposed to attack religion, serious investigators about the relationships between science and religion would do better to read real historians such as John Hedley Brooke, David Lindbergh and Ronald Numbers, or Dennis Danielson. The nuances in historical episodes such as the Galileo affair, who by the way was never tortured, are much more complex than the simplistic parrot talk usually perpetuated about these subjects.
I've always been against throwing brains out the window........2003-12-21
If there's one thing I've learned, it's this: to know if a book is reliable, you have to understand a little bit about the author. White wrote this book in angry response to criticism for refusing to give his students at Cornell religious tests. As noble as his intentions may have been, the resulting book is a travesty and is largely responsible for creating the common Warfare Myth that has plagued the relationship between science and faith since the nineteenth century. Not only were reliable historical sources much rarer in 1869, White's idea of research was getting his untrained graduate students to dig up whatever they could find to support his thesis.
To make my case, I'll use the section on Galileo. White totally ignores the fact that Galileo himself was a faithful Christian and had no desire to be at "war" with the Church. The disagreement was not over the relationship between religion and science but between interpretation of Scripture. Furthermore, White introduces many outright lies into his argument. He claims that Galileo was subjected to imprisonment and torture when in reality, he was given a five room suite in a palace during his time in Rome. White uses sensationalism and melodrama freely in such ridiculous phrases as "seething, squabbling, screaming mass of priests, bishops, archbishops..." and "screamed in rage against the Copernican system." In short, the Galileo affair is extremely complex with errors occurring on both sides. To twist facts and tell outright lies to say that the issue was a struggle between science and religion only shows White's gross ignorance of the matter.
As a Christian, a scientist, and a fairly intelligent person, I'm shocked to see that people still use this ridiculous 134 year old sham to feed the Warfare Myth. In using this book against Christians, scientists are being just as narrow minded and naïve as the Christians who attack reliable scientific evidence in the name of God. Now that I've probably managed to make everybody angry, I urge everyone to realize that the issues White tries to cram into his simple model of "a" versus "b", are actually very complex and one would do well to do some real research into the issues addressed in this book rather than buy into White's mindless garbage.
... and the war ain't over yet........2003-05-18
Don't be put off by the stultifying title and heftiness of this book. As history books go, this is a page-turner. It's a highly readable and thoroughly documented history of how Christian dogmatists have fought virtually every advance in human knowledge in the Western world: from astronomy to anatomy, evolution to Egyptology, linguistics to lightning rods.
This book first appeared in 1896. Since then, science has advanced and grown faster than ever before--yet Christian religious dogma is unchanged. Incredibly, we still hear from some states, towns, and public school systems (at least in the U.S.) the same biblical-fundamentalist arguments against scientific inquiry that, as Prof. White's book meticulously demonstrates, have been raised and debunked repeatedly over the past two millennia.
It's up to us whether we let religious fundamentalists paralyze progress in our era. Never forget which fruit God told the humans not to eat.

Beautiful Rubbish!.......2003-09-30
Perhaps the best example of late Victorian anti-clerical history to survive. Much of its contents now discredited. No longer used as even a secondary source for historical studies. This two-volume masterpiece is a must-read for any Fundamentalist. It traces each major branch of science from its origin through its struggle against the omnipresent bludgeon of Chrisitian wickedness.
In the end science (aka. Truth) always reigns victorious over a jealous, wincing and befuddled Church. Yay!
Students of more careful and more recent histories of science are forgiven for snickering. One must think of this as a snapshot of late 19th century thought. White, too, is forgiven. The author sometimes lapses into the prosaic styles of Robert Ingersoll. Tremendously influential on the likes of Clarence Darrow and other throwbacks of his time. Truly one of the best narratives I've read.
