Lifestyle changes--especially exercise--can have a profound impact on a woman's risk of developing breast cancer and her chances of survival, say the authors of Breast Fitness, all of whom are breast-cancer specialists. Obese women have almost twice the risk of getting breast cancer after menopause as thin women. At any age, overweight women are at twice the risk compared to thinner women of not surviving for 5 or 10 years after diagnosis. After breast surgery, exercise helps women rehabilitate physically and emotionally.
The authors give the facts about breast cancer, argue the merits of exercise and dietary changes, and suggest exercise and nutrition guidelines to fit various needs. For example, Breast Fitness illustrates some gentle exercises to help you regain motion and strength in your arm and shoulder after breast surgery, and tips for safe exercising during cancer treatment. A motivating section of this book is the description of Team Survivor--a triathlon conditioning program for women with a past or present diagnosis of breast cancer--with stories from 21 of the participants. Weekly supervised exercise sessions, educational forums, and activities from walking to mountain climbing help women "benefit and develop both physically and emotionally, while proceeding at an individual pace." The 21 women's stories are always inspiring (38-year-old Vibeke: "I am a true believer that keeping up my exercise with healthy eating habits will allow me to see my grandchildren one day") and sometimes humorous (Bonnie's prosthesis developed a hole during a long-distance bike ride, so she patched it with her tire patch kit!). The reader starts out admiring the women in the stories, and gradually realizes, "I can do this, too!" The last section of the book presents specific, detailed recommendations for starting your own exercise program, including figuring out the right intensity, choosing activities, setting goals, and overcoming roadblocks.
The aim of Breast Fitness is to help motivate and educate women to fight breast cancer with exercise, nutrition, and other lifestyle changes. The authors cite many studies that support their advice. If you have breast cancer, this book will help you take control of your life and health. --Joan Price

A must read for all women.......2001-02-01
My name is Sherry Lebed Davis and I am a Dance Movement Specialits for breast cancer survivors and travel all over the country teaching, training and presenting to breast cancer surviovrs and the healthcare community . I am also a breast cancer survivor who is always reading and trying to find answers to the many questions I am asked. This book has answered so many questions that surviors around the country ask me. Every survivor should read this book to answer questions they have now, and preventative steps they should know about to prevent reoccurrence. This book would be a wonderful guide for the Allied Health Professional. It would enable them to help their patients have a better quality of life, a true understanding of the wonderful studies that are cited in this book, get their life back on track and educate them about breast cancer. It is a must read for all women as an educational tool to learn as much as they can on how to try to prevent breast cancer. It is truely the best book on breast cancer I have read!
A Must Read.......2000-10-25
Three experts have joined together to write the book that every woman and man should read to live a healthy, breast cancer-free life. For the past six years, I have worked with the authors asking them repeatedly to write this book to help prevent the spread of breast cancer. I am so appreciative of them for their work - it's excellent.
As an exercise scientist myself, I guarantee that the workouts and information in BREAST FITNESS is accurate and meaningful. If you have been looking for all of the information on using exercise and health techniques to live a higher energy and lower stressed life, read this one.

A good introduction.......2003-03-04
Keppie's work regarding the development of the Roman Army from the republic to the early principate does a good job of describing some of the aspects of the Roman Army: marching camp, weapons and organisation. Lacking any meaningful battle descriptions, and with somewhat long appendix section on mostly irrelevent material, nevertheless is a good introductory book for the beginner.
A good introductory guide.......2001-10-25
This is a good guide for anyone who is interested in how the Roman army functioned and how it changed over time. For specialists, this book will seem simple but for advanced undergraduates or disinterested graduate students the book is wonderful and I highly recommend it for them. Non-students should find it readable but may wish to consult other sources as well. Advanced graduate students who are more interested in military history will find it a bit boring. Overall well done and well written for the appropriate audience.
A Very Interesting and Educational Book.......2001-01-11
I think this book is very interesting because it tells everything about the Roman Army and information you never knew. It includes the great information about people like generals and great emperors like Julius Caesar and his conquest of Gaul. Also tells from what kind of armour they wear to what they used as a weapon. It also explains there stradegies in battle such as when they put there sheilds together and keeping out any flying objects. This book will teach you any type of questions you have about the Roman Army.If you are doing a big report on the Roman Army and you need info this is the book to get and read.It has the table of contents if you need something specific its very helpful in a report or speach of some sort as I said. You will learn the great generals of Rome and How they soon took over all of Europe. ... So read the book and see for yourself.
nice addition to library.......2000-06-15
I found this book to be a nice companion piece to Graham Webster's The Roman Imperial Army. While Webster took the forensic approach to the Roman Army and focused on the physical structure ( armor, weapons, organization, forts, etc. ) Dr. Keppie looks at the evolution of the army from the republic to the early Empire and the role the army played in this transition both positive and negative. When read in conjucture with Dr. Webster the book fits in nicely. There are pictures, drawings, and layouts of roman camps over diagrams of the archeological excavations of the actual forts and camps. This a very easy/pleasurable read and would make a nice additon to one's personal library.
If this book is a bargin-grab it fast!.......2000-06-08
This book is a great reference for people interested in the Roman Army. Keppie describes the changes that took place within the army throughout the Republic. He includes pictures and diagrams of how the army set up before battle as well as pictures of the weapons and armor the legions were using at that time. The bibliography is extensive for those interested in finding out more information. This is a book that is used by many other books on the Roman army. Buy it now!
Book Description
From a pioneering Israeli human rights activist, a stirring memoir on life in the troubled region.
Though brought up in a right-wing Israeli household as the daughter of a former member of the Stern Gang, Daphna Golan-Agnon has become one of Israel's most outspoken activists for the rights of Palestinians. In this moving memoir, she writes of the struggle of everyday life in a state edging ever closer to apartheid.
Through anecdotes, interviews, and letters, Next Year in Jerusalem provides an insider's view of the milestones of the Israeli peace movement, drawing on Golan-Agnon's experience as co-founder of the human rights organization B'Tselem and the feminist peace group Bat Shalom. From the efforts to draw attention to the Ansar III desert prison, where Palestinian political prisoners once languished without trial, to the 1999 Israeli High Court victory abolishing torture, to the many misunderstandings that arise even among like-minded Palestinian and Israeli activists, Golan-Agnon candidly portrays the challenges of being part of a growing movement of Israelis who refuse to participate in the persecution of Palestinians. Confronting the Palestinian-Israeli dilemma in all its complexity, Next Year in Jerusalem gives readers a unique, personal view of the joint struggle for peace.

An intimate and insightful view on the conflict.......2007-03-16
In this memoir, Golan-Agnon provides us with a solid work that successfully blends diary-like reflections and transcribed interviews with very insightful observations of the conflict. The result is a book that can serve as a starting point to both the expert and the profane in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. This is undoubtedly a major salient feature of this work, especially if we consider the complexities involved in this ongoing conflict. Another important attribute of this work is the openness with which the author delivers this work. This can be interpreted as an effort to present an objective view of the conflict. An instance where this openness can be perceived is when the author admits getting uneasy about the translation into German of one of the reports published by an agency she used to work for. She openly admits her "discomfort at the thought of a report being published in the German language that detailed Israeli Jewish use of torture" (p.63).This is an interesting notion, one of the very few the author does not explore, though. Perhaps what makes Golan-Agnon uncomfortable is the thought of knowing that the Israeli Jewish, her people, once victims of the atrocities of torture, are now inflicting to the Palestinian people what they once declared as the most inhumane offense. An additional accomplishment of this work is the use of statistics. Every page of her work is magnificently complemented with a series of interesting and relevant statistics that make Next Year In Jerusalem more than a mere well-written book, but also one resplendent with sound and irrefutable arguments against the oppression the Israeli government has been inflicting on the Palestinian people for decades.
The only weakness I can think of for this work is the limited inclusion of Palestinian opinions on this conflict. The author certainly has included a few thoughts and viewpoints that represent the Palestinian voice, but they are not as many as the Israeli. This call should not be read as a simple call of lack of equality, but rather as call for a thorough participation and exploration of everyone involved in this conflict.
Next year in Jerusalem is a magnificent book whose merits include an intimate, yet very professional writing style full of anecdotes, relevant statistics, insightful points of view, and an ample discussion of torture as policy. All these attributes make Next Year in Jerusalem an indispensable tool for anyone interested in the Palestinian - Israeli conflict and the fight for human rights. The author has also included the content of some interviews with key speakers that comment on the origin, the current state, and, most important, possible solutions to the conflict.
Coping with guilt and responsibility.......2006-01-23
Golan-Agnon was born into a Jewish right-wing family. Golan-Agnon's father was a member of the Stern Gang and a supporter of Meir Kahane. Yet Golan-Agnon co-founded B'tselem and Bat Shalom. What led her to break away from so domineering a tradition and effect such a radical change?
This book is an account of the writer's involvement with the Israeli peace movement, the struggles, the difficulties, the occasional sense of futility and hopelessness and the constant feeling of guilt and responsibility.
Emotive conversations and compassionate monologues are interchanged with dispassionate reports on the logistics involved in founding groups like B'tselem, on the practical difficulties members from both sides are faced with on their way to attend meetings, on the technicalities of reaching unanimous decisions, on sharing a common vision and striving for common goals, their seemingly unbridgeable differences notwithstanding.
The writer also sees things from a woman's perspective, drawing from her reserves of sensitivity and romanticism when she states how much better it would be to hear mothers discussing how to live together in this place instead of watching the generals on the telly battling it out and playing tough. The impracticality of this statement notwithstanding, anyone can decipher an implicit wish to see Israeli society and Israeli politics become disentangled from the military's ever present and overpowering influence. An influence and a relationship so deeply ingrained that now a new trend emerges, that of whisking discharged officers into positions as school principals.
A personal account of the fight against an establishment the writer believes does wrong and is unfair and unjust and supports discrimination and racism and oppression. An issue for me was the book's title, which may have been given by the author in an attempt, I reckon, to identify with an depict the aspiration shared by both sides, namely that of having Jerusalem as the capital of their respective states: Israel the whole of Jerusalem undivided, the Palestinians East Jerusalem, in other words the Arab part of Jerusalem that was occupied in 1967. It could also be the writer's wish to see the two sides live in peace side by side, willing to share instead of claiming absolute ownership, at least as far as the Palestinians are concerned as the other side has yet to make that concession. The phrase "next year in Jerusalem" however, has been so inextricably linked to the Zionist movement and Jewish emigration to Palestine, that it hardly serves the purpose Golan-Agnon must have envisaged and intended it to serve.
Creating a community of conscience........2005-11-03
Too often diasporas play a critical role in the nature of conflict. Standing on the sidelines, they lend morale and financial support to extremist positions that can only perpetuate the cycle of violence. Yet, they do not bare the slings and arrows of daily existence in the line of fire they so readily perpetuate.
This call for peace is a harrowing account of life in a divided society. It is a call for humanity to rise above violence, for sanity to prevail over madness. It is a must read for all in the diaspora who have a vested interest in the Middle East. This mother, activist and intellectual captivates her reader with a vivid narrative that speaks to the essence of her existence in Israel, an existence infused with a love of the land in which she lives but marred by the torment of violence. This is a tale of love for all humanity and a concern for all those in the Middle East. Simply put, it has to be read!!!
Shaming the 'name' of Agnon.......2005-09-26
The woman who writes this book advertises herself as the wife of the grandchild of Shmuel Yosef Agnon. Agnon was not simply a great writer but one steeped in Jewish literature and tradition. And with a deep and abiding love of the Jewish people and the land of Israel.
The book which Dafna Agnon- Golan has produced is a one- sided anti- Israeli document. It makes no effort whatsoever to examine the Palestinians and other Arabs role in initiating and perpetuating the conflict as a violent one. The author does not seem to recognize 'Israeli self- defense' as a legitimate purpose. In face in the concluding passages of the book she celebrates the fact that her child will not be going to the Israeli Army. So when there is need to respond somehow to Arab terror and violence the Agnon- Golans will not be a part of this. They will be at peace with themselves.
Sympathy with the 'other'is the heart of human morality. There is nothing wrong with Dafna- Golan's caring for the Palestinians, being concerned about their suffering, trying to help them. But when this is done by distorting the truth completely, disguising the true actions and motivations of Palestinian society as a whole, - when it is done by showing no sympathy for the victims of the atrocities the Palestinians have committed against the Jews - when it is done with no real balance , and fairness- it stands truth and morality on its head.
Agnon is better off that he did not live to see such dishonorable use put to his great name.
A Heartfelt Plea for Israel's Future .......2005-08-15
Reviewers who dismiss with one star every book and article remotely critical of Israeli policies are too blinded by their own prejudices to understand this complex and beautiful book by a proud and patriotic Israeli who is nevertheless troubled by her own country's actions. Daphna Golan-Agnon, the daughter of a Lehi fighter and the wife of Israeli Nobelist S.Y. Agnon's grandson, stands squarely in a great tradition of critical Zionists, whose love for Israel is matched by high expectations for its conduct. As a founder of B'Tselem, the highly acclaimed Israeli human rights organization, Golan-Agnon has devoted her life to ensuring that Israel uphold standards of international law.
Criticism of Israeli actions in the occupied territories, which is a commonplace in Israel's own lively public discourse, has been sharply stigmatized in the United States--Golan-Agnon's touching and personal account is a necessary corrective to the broken American discussion of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Those Americans who preach about Israeli politics would be well-served to listen carefully to the heartfelt concerns of Israelis themselves.

Customer Reviews:
A lovely children's book.......2000-05-03
This is a lovely collection of stories from around the world all with a common theme: Jerusalem. They are gathered by an excellent story teller, Howard Schwartz, and retold as a group. I had been familiar with his adult books, particularly the ones that tell tales of mysticism which can be rather complex for children, and was pleased that this book really hit the mark for youngish kids. The illustrations are lovely and add to the pleasure of the book.
