Königgrätz, a city overlooking the river Elbe, was a western strongpoint of the Austrian Empire. On the morning of July 3, 1866, Prussia attacked the city against high odds and defeated the Austrian army in a single day, despite the Austrian advantage in heavy artillery and command of the high ground. The fall of Königgrätz transferred power over the German states from Austria to Prussia, marking the beginning of the German nation, a political consequence considered to be among the most important of any conflict in modern history.
The battle for the city of Königgrätz--now called Hradec Králové, located in the Czech Republic--was the largest of its time, with nearly half a million troops involved. It was also the first battle where the outcome was directly determined by the availability of new technologies, including the railroad, telegraph, cast steel rifled cannon, and breech-loading rifle. It also marked a lesson in the fallacy of dependence on technology at the expense of sound strategy.
In this full account, distinguished historian Gordon A. Craig discusses the state of political affairs surrounding the battle, the personalities involved, the weaponry, and the tactics in order to recreate the battlefield in all its complexity.

Gordon Craig gives a clear and highly readable account of the most infuential battle of the 19th century. This should be required reading for anybody trying to understand modern German history. The author uses excellent source material to bring a contemporary narretive and evaluation to this historical milestone.

Without this book, you are pretty much on your own when you are reading the main text. All the problems are solved clearly. Just reading it as a textbook can give you extra tips on somethings that you might have skipped in the book. Sometimes, you might get confused. Well, it is just chemistry. Read carefully.

if you're taking o chem, then you need this book. the summaries are helpful for review of chapters or in the worst case scenario, in substitution of the chapters. but the most important part of this book are the solutions to the problems. the only way you'll learn organic chemistry, like it or not, is by practicing problems. this solutions manual is the only way to know if you're doing those problems correctly - the text book does NOT contain solutions for problems in the book, beside the worthlessly easy ones contained directly in the chapters. in addition to the solution, it contains an explanation for all problems that require one.
THIS BOOK IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY! you won't be disappointed. if anything, go in on it with a friend that is also taking the course. you WILL need this book.

the questions make you more acquainted with what types of questions u might expect for the exams..and thus you hve more chances of doing better!

I benefited from this book immensely. If you are taking this class do yourself a big favor and buy it. If you are going to do something do it right and working the problems is the key. I got it for around 30$.
Needs a better editor.......2007-02-25
I bought this book along with the Bruice text for the organic class I'm taking right now. A solutions manual is indispensable for checking the answers to the problems you do - so I was going to buy the book anyway. Problem is, it looks like this solutions manual is the solutions manual for the 5th editon, only with a new cover so it looks like it's for the 6th edition. This would be fine, except that the problems in the 5th edition are not the same problems used in the 6th edition. I'd say that 90% of the time, the solutions manual is right - but is 90% good enough for people who are trying to learn the subject, and just end up getting more confused by a solutions manual with solutions for the wrong problem?? I think the publisher should offer a correct copy free to anyone who shelled out $88 for this book.

I feel that this book is fine for a reference to the text book problems. The only complaint is that going through nearly the first half of the book, I have found a few minor typos.
I loved this book by Bruice!.......2001-01-11
I'm an advanced physics student, and decided to take organic chemistry since i was curious about reaction mechanisms. I must say, i was very satisfied with the book by Bruice. The mechanisms were very detailed, and the book seem to go into a little more detail than most books that i had looked at. I loved my organic chemistry class and although found it much easier than physics, it had it's challenging areas....and Bruice's book help me understand these challenging areas. in the end, i highly recommend this book if you want to understand organic chemistry at a much more detailed level.

The Best O-Chem Book!.......2007-05-13
Even if you do not attend any O. Chem class, you can study this book and learn a lot. I took Organic Chemistry at University last year and we used a different book for that class. O. Chem by Vollhardt provides some more materials than needed for the first and second year of O. Chem class, but it helps you to have a better understanding about the subject.

This study guide/solutions manual matches the first edition of Organic Chemistry. Questions have been changed, rearranged, and added in the second edition, and the guide isn't nearly as useful or easy to use with it.
Very well explained, to the point, and thorough. A must have for the textbook........2007-07-15
Several sample problems are worked out in every chapter to illustrate the material covered. They are all very clearly explained.
In addition, there are also more than enough problems at the end of each chapter to help students better understand the topics covered, however the answers are not provided in the back of the textbook.
This is precisely why the solutions manual is a must buy. I have worked all the problems presented from chapter 1 to chapter 21 (to include the end of chapter problems), and I have encountered only two or three "bad problems" for which the answers were not explained clearly. Almost every answer to every problem is clearly illustrated - some concepts are even better explained in the solutions manual than in the textbook!
It's expensive, but it's worth the money if you use it properly. I'd wish the buyer good luck in this class, but I doubt any disciplined, devoted student would need it after using this text.
