    Book Description

In terms of sheer numbers of soldiers, armored vehicles, guns, and the scale of destruction and casualties, the Eastern Front was the most active and decisive theater of war during the 20th century. For four years, the armies and air forces of the world's two most powerful and brutal dictators savaged each other over terrain that stretched from the Arctic to the Middle East. The map of Europe was changed forever by the fighting on this front, and even today, the world reverberates with the echoes of that fighting, in places like Chechenya and the Balkans.

Despite the enormous importance of the fighting that occurred between Nazi Germany and her allies and the Soviet Empire, we are still uncovering vastly important and long concealed facts about the war. For almost 50 years, the world had to depend largely on captured German records for its understanding of the Eastern Front, since almost all information made available by the Soviets was propaganda or even disinformation. Over the last decade, following the fall of the Communism in Europe in general, and Russia in particular, long-sealed archives have begun to open, and the truth about the Soviet side of the war is finally being discovered.

In this concise, yet highly comprehensive, volume, readers can begin to gain access to the more accurate and complete information that is now becoming available. Through the diligence and expertise of a team of highly capable and experienced military researchers and historians, including David Glantz, the widely-acknowledged foremost Soviet military historian in America, new information has been synthesized with the best of long-available data. The result is Slaughterhouse, the single most comprehensive and up to date work of its kind.

    Slaughterhouse includes the following features:

—Two chapters by famed Sovietologist David Glantz: "Chronology of the War on the Eastern Front" (with nine detailed maps) and "Forgotten Battles" of the Eastern Front.

—The German armed forces and their allies: Thumbnail histories of 487 army groups, armies, corps, and divisions that saw combat on the Eastern Front.

—The Soviet armed forces: Thumbnail histories of 881 directions, fronts, armies, corps, and divisions.

—Biographical sketches of 57 key Axis and Soviet wartime personalities.

—Highly-detailed organizational diagrams of 55 types of Axis and Red Army divisions that served on the Eastern Front.

—Comprehensive, meticulously researched performance data comparisons of hundreds of Axis and Red Army weapons, including small arms, mortars, artillery, tanks, assault guns, combat aircraft, and more.

520 pages, supported by 88 photos; 9 maps; notes; and extensive 16 page bibliography.

1 out of 5 stars Eastern front for dummies.......2006-05-07

Both of my grandparents fought in WWII on the soviet side, so I'm pretty comfortable with the subject. I've read alot of good stuff about Mr. David Glantz from american, german and russian sources(check out battlefield.ru, choose english language option at the top left, awesome site with lots of info on the subject as well as overview of Mr.Glantz books). In any case this effort by Mr.Glantz is not a book and this is surely can't be called an encyclopedia of Eastern front. This is nothing shourt but a Eastern front for dummies. From a man who knows so much on Eastern front and has access to so much information this book is a joke.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent compact guide to Eastern Front.......2006-01-30

The brilliant work, Slaugterhouse, by David Glantz is a one of its kind to give the Russians their rightful due in the Second World War. As Mr. Glantz points out in the book, had it not been for the Eastern Front where the Russians took most of the thrust of the Wehrmacht, the war most likely taken a different course. This hand book is a useful guide to anyone wishing to understand this very most important theater. It took many nations to team together to defeat Germany, Italy and Japan. The Allied bombings in Western Europe, the sea battles in the pacific and in Asia, the North African Campaign, and the campaigns in Western Europe have been given total credit for the victory. Mr. Glantz corrects for this and shows how the Russians would have defeated the Germans on their own merit. The reader can find readily information of significant battles and commanders. It is a great guide to use while visiting the Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Moscow. When I was in Moscow the Russians were impressed with this handy book.

    5 out of 5 stars A "Must-Have" for the Eastern Front.......2005-11-11

Without echoing what others have written, this book is one that will appeal to both the neophytes and the veterans of researching the Eastern Front. It is useful on several levels, and contains a wealth of information that in some cases is newly available in the English language!

While there is a considerable amount of information in the book, it really is presented in such a logical fashion that it's quite simple to find what is needed. For example, unlike some presentations, the unit information sections are quite logically in numerical order by hierarchy, so everything is easy to locate.

Much of the information on the German forces is in point of fact available in other milieus, both on-line and printed. However, with this book you have not only a listing, but a synopsis of every German and German-Allied unit to fight on the Russian front, from Army Group down to division. For the German-Allied units, this is probably the first time the information on Rumanian, Italian, Hungarian and Finnish forces has ever been gathered together in one place.

The section on the Soviet will be very valuable to researchers and historians. Since the end of the war, very little factual information from the Soviet side has been available. Here in this volume, you will find information that has not been readily available previously. Admittedly, some of the information is limited, but that is due to original sources, not the authors of this book. It must be remembered that in the literal `meat-grinder' that was the Russian Front, many of these units didn't exist long enough to develop a pedigree. Record keeping wasn't always as efficient as historians would desire, either.

The unit organization section I believe was handled very well. Those who study the German military especially know how many incarnations there were of each major type of unit. In this volume, the basic types of divisions are displayed, with major differentiations noted as needed. A good example of this would be the diagram for the Waffen-SS Mountain Division. The basic provisions for this type of unit are shown, followed by notes for six different Waffen-SS Mountain Divisions, explaining how they differed from the norm.

In the weapons section, the publisher has presented important information comparing German and Russian weapons side by side. Disregarding factory specifications, the information here shows things like effective range, which is much more important to the soldier and the historian. By putting the information side by side, it is easy to compare capabilities of different weapons systems from the rifle all the way up to the heaviest artillery. For vehicles, the information provided is that which is pertinent to combat. Offensive capability and defensive survivability is presented.

If one were to read this book from cover to cover, one would not know all there is to know about the war in Russia. Like any encyclopedia, this book provides a considerable amount of information, without going into exquisite detail. It will provide an excellent starting point for any research, though. I would strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about combat on the Russian Front in World War II.

4 out of 5 stars The Eastern Front in a nutshell.......2005-10-18

The Eastern Front is a huge subject which cannot be covered in any detail in one single book. Someone considering buying this work should understand what it is and what it isn't. This book is not for anyone looking for detailed accounts of individual battles and campaigns. Nor is it for anyone wanting detailed orders of battle or biographies of the main commanders involved on both sides and it's not for anyone wanting detailed information on the weapons and equipment used.
What it is, is a 'one stop shop' of useful summarised information for the whole campaign and it's participants. This book will be useful for those who wish to look up facts and figures on the war in the East but don't require in depth information or wish to part with what can be a considerable amount of money aquiring more detailed and specialised works.
The book is exactly what it says it is on the cover, a handbook of the Eastern Front.

    5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive reference.......2005-10-16

It was a great idea to publish a handbook of Eastern Front units, officers and actions in a single English-language volume. There is plenty of interest in military-historical circles in this subject, and an encyclopedia-style reference covering both sides of the conflict was long overdue.

    5 out of 5 stars A savage war.......2006-07-16

I read this book 20 years ago when it first came out in English. A really great book that gives one an insight into one of the most horrific and savage moments in human history. When two titans clashed on the steppes of Russia. I have read other accounts and they also show vicious the fighting was. I would have liked to have met Degrelle, he must have been an interesting character

4 out of 5 stars A very fine book about the campaign v. the Commies during WWII. I am not into Degrelle personal/political views, yet nonetheless.......2006-06-07

This is a very good book that was first
published in Spanish in the early Fifties,
where Degrelle (Spain) died in early 1994.

Great writing and some even US(!) military
schools had their students read this account!
Must have been before Political Stupidity set
in! A must read for anybody even remotely in-
terested in the 'Eastern Front' of ETO during
the period! I do not agree with Leon's poli-
tics though. I am a Revisionist of the far middle
    politically!

5 out of 5 stars Leon Degrelle - The Ostfront through his eyes........2005-07-16

I just recently learned of Leon Degrelle. I have followed WWII history for a long time but never heard of him and his rather under-reported group of Walloons. This is sad because his Wallonien Division has been a part of many important battles on the Eastern Front. Also as a writer Mr.Degrelle has a style all his own, he truly is one-of-a-kind in that regard. I very much enjoyed reading this book and all of his other books that were translated to english. His writing style is detailed and poetic. It's almost like he's watching the landscape from an elevated position, reporting about the little things noticed during his experiences. This while he is in the thick-of-battle. In other words his writing style brings you there, to picture what he pictured at the time. I had a tough time putting the book down and couldn't wait to continue.

There are many, many books written about the Eastern Front. I have read many and there are no holy-grail books, just books written from different points of views, from different sides. Leon Degrelle writes about his experiences and the reader begins to see him as a Father to his 'kameraden' in a division with men from his country fighting on the Eastern Front.

I was amazed at his dedication, especially at the end of the Cherkassy encirclement. Afterwards he met with Adolf Hitler and Hitler refused to allow him to return to the front. Mr.Degrelle put his life on the line by disobeying that order, although the SS administration finally allowed him to 'do as he wished'. He returned to the front because 300+ men from his homeland with no training at all were being rushed to the front minus soldier training. How many so-called steadfast followers of whatever idealogy would do that today? Degrelle could have stayed safe with his high rank, his collection of awards and such but chose to return to the front. He risked death for a war he felt was almost over.

There is so much more detail to touch upon. The mud, the frozen wasteland, the lice, the untold number of Russian attacks from land and air, the scenes of bravery, of death, of moments when men cried because war is hell. This is a very important book for followers of the war on the Eastern Front.

4 out of 5 stars A self justification of the highest order........2003-01-27

I found this book in a second hand bookshop and having read of Degrelle before I bought it. The book tells Degrelle's story from his own point of view and cannot be regarded as an impartial viewpoint, it is more of a justification certainly.
He was an extremely brave and competent soldier without a doubt and was a charismatic leader of men. His pre-war political activities and writings had already proved that. During his time in the Waffen SS he rose from the rank of Corporal to General and in the process became the most highly decorated non-German of the war. In 1944 he became the commander of the Wallonian Waffen SS division.
After the breakout from the Cherkassy pocket he was summoned to meet Hitler himself. In all he met Hitler three times such was the respect he had earned in the eyes of the Nazis. Hitler even told him that "if he had a son he would like him to be like Degrelle". Other German commanders credited the Wallonian volunteers with the same level of commitment & bravery as the regular German SS units.
His successful escape at the end of the war and his post-war career in Spain would probably be interesting reading by itself.
The introduction to the book was written by somebody called John O'Keefe, I would like to know more about him and his political ideas. I cannot find a reference to him on the Net.
The book is all very stirring stuff indeed but I cannot help but feel that there are some huge omissions in this biographical piece. Before the war Degrelle led a movement called the Rexists, according to his book they were a new broom in a stuffy, conservative, reactionary riddled country. Every power in the country banded together (the Church, other political parties, trade unions etc) to stop the Rexists from winning the Presidency. With the benefit if hindsight it looks like they were right.
Degrelle himself claims that he joined the SS with the noble aim of resurrecting Belgium under the Nazis and that the only way to do this was to fight alongwoth the Nazis in the so-called Crusade against Bolshevism. There is no mention at all of any other collaborationist activities (e.g the betrayal and deportation of Jews) under the Nazis, Degrelle may not have participated directly in such activities but other members of his Rexist party certainly did. It is also worth noting that Degrelle seems to have been an ardent racist, his contempt and dislike for Muslim Russian soldiers (Musacks as he calls them) is particularly evident.

Indeed in the entire book there is no mention of the Holocaust or of any other Nazi atrocities throught the entire war. I cannot believe that a man like Degrelle could have been completely unaware of these events given his long service on the Eastern front. I do not believe that he participated in them but he gives no indication of any doubts or soul searching at any point, not even after the war. The Crusade against Bolshevism seems to have overridden every other consideration.
His gullibility concerning Hitler is also intriguing, during his second meeting he listened for over two hours to his plans for the post-war European order. This was at a time when military defeat was clearly inevitable yet Degrelle came away from the meeting convinced that the Nazis were going to win ! Hitler was said to be capable of literally mesmirising people and Degrelle appears to be a prime example.
During the battle of the bulge Degrelle's Wallonian division was waiting behind the German army to re-occupy a re-conquered Belgium. Another prime example of his naïve optimism. Here we get the only reference to Nazi atrocities albeit the most oblique possible. Apparently the Nazis were not going to repeat the "mistakes" they had made after the 1940 invasion.

Had he been captured by the Allies he would have been tried and almost certainly executed by the post-war Belgian government. Although he was not a war criminal in the usual sense of the word (he was far too busy fighting at the front) he was clearly a traitor to his country. He also was guilty of leading many of his fellow countrymen into a conflict they should never have been involved in, particularly in the latter days of the war. When the Russians were at the Oder preparing for the final offensive to end the war, Degrelle was still accepting young recruits to fight in his beloved "Crusade". The non-German SS units fought on to the very end and suffered massive casualties in the last battles, I wonder how many of those men would look back on their time in the SS with the same rose-tinted glasses as Degrelle ?

    3 out of 5 stars Different view............2001-05-31

Out of all the first person accounts of the Eastern front, this one comes across very differently. Degrelle is a infamous charater of that time, and is Anti-Soviet/Pro-Nazi slant is evident to the reader. The story is a worthy one for the experienced reader, yet way to complex for the casual WWII fan. The discriptions, while not as good as others (ex. Sajer, Gottlieb)tells a vivid story. The Wallonian's seemed to be in the think of many decisive battles in the war and the book shows this very clearly. It also shows in graphic detail the savage and brutal nature of war in the East.

    Book Description

A fascinating and detailed account of every aspect of the Waffen-SS's war on the Eastern Front: its battles, its organization, tactics, and equipment. Read what it was like to take part in Operation 'Barbarossa', the opening assault against Russia in the summer of 1941; the clash of massed armor at Kursk; and other epic encounters of war in the East. Ailsby also provides detailed insight into how Waffen-SS individuals and units met and often mastered their Red Army adversaries.

3 out of 5 stars Ok but not great history of the SS........2001-11-27

This book is a decent introduction into the study of the SS. It doesn't have much (if any) new information and it doesn't go very deep into the subject but if you are only starting to study WWII or the SS this is a good primer (probably best suited to high school students). It also mainly concentrates on the fighting units of the SS while devoting very little space to the Waffen SS's atrocities and participation in the Holocaust. I also would have liked to have more infomation about the foreign SS units. The book has several good photographs in it.

Again, not for serious students of military history but a good start for study of the SS if you are interested in learning about WWII military units. Just don't expect too much.

1 out of 5 stars This book is a rehash of old data with a new title.......1999-05-27

Mr. Ailsby never fails to copy data from other authors and add a fancy title that is catching and will sell. So long as the title has "SS" on it (he figures), it will sell. Don't waste your time or money on this piece of tripe!

    4 out of 5 stars A good book........1998-09-06

This is a good book and the first I've read by Christopher Ailsby. It covers almost everything concerning the war on the eastern front 1941 - 1945. I`m thinking of aquiring Roll Of Infamy by the same author.

5 out of 5 stars History belongs to the Victors.......2004-02-02

It is never easy to judge the motivations of people 60 years prior, but Degrelle gives a plausible and doubtlessly accurate explanation of the political malaise in Belgium and much of Europe before the war. The view he shared with a large number of others was that the Bolsheviks were the real danger to Europe and the "European" army fighting the Reds on the Eastern Front saw this as fighting for their past and their future as Europeans. With the wisdom of hindsight was he wrong?
Degrelle also goes some way to debunking a few myths.
    - Scorched earth gets barely a mention. In fact there are numerous mentions of huge crops late into the fighting.
    - That it all came down to numbers. Degrelle credits the Russians with fighting to match the conditions while explaining how the German "civilisation" was often a real handicap.
    - Worse than the cold was the mud.
Degrelle paints an ugly picture of war, but displays a love of life and beauty, things we are not supposed to associate with the SS, even the Waffen SS. It is a privilege to be given his perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Courage and an Unknown Side of WWII.......2003-09-02

This splendid book tells the remarkable story of Degrelle and hundreds of thousands of other non-German volunteers who fought against the forces of the Soviet tyranny in World War II. Because circumstances allied us with Stalin, people like Degrelle were vilified as "collaborators" with the Germans. Anyone with an interest in the Eastern Front will learn volumes from the author's humble recitation of what he and his men endured. As horrible as the Eastern Front was, the author endured worse after the war, when his family was imprisoned and his children forcibly scattered to institutions across Europe in a vengeful attempt to punish him. It's a story you'll never forget, and a side of history wholly unknown to most.

        Book Description

Germany's merchant marine fleet-the second largest in the world prior to 1914-played an unintended but decisive role in that nation's defeat in World War I. There were those ships that went to war for the Kaiser on the high seas, those that stayed at home or otherwise played no significant part in the conflict, and those which were commandeered (mostly in 1917 and by the United States) and used against Germany. This is a well illustrated history, both practical and romantic, of the association each ship may have had with famous people and events of the war, and of the fates of the ships that comprised that fleet.

        Book Description

This is a book of marvelous pictures that illustrates standard examples in low dimensional topology. The text starts at the most basic level (the intersection of coordinate planes) and gives hands on constructions of the most beautiful examples in topology: the projective plane, Poincare's example of a homology sphere, lens spaces, knotted surfaces, 2-sphere eversions, and higher dimensional manifolds. The text carefully explains the importance of the examples and the techniques without being bogged down in a morass of technicalities.

Chapter 1 opens with the classification of orientable surfaces, and the meaning of space. Chapter 2 discusses examples of non-orientable surfaces including models of the projective plane and the Klein bottle. Chapter 3 discusses how curves fit on surfaces and gives a general discussion of knotted strings in space. In Chapter 4, some examples of other 3-dimensional spaces are described. These include the 3-dimensional sphere, lens spaces, and the quaternionic projective space. In Chapter 5, the author reviews the movie techniques of studying surfaces in 4-dimensions. He shows how to move among the standard examples of Klein bottles, and he gives a "movie move" decomposition of turning the 2-sphere inside out. In the final Chapter, higher dimensional spaces are examined from the same elementary point of view.

The book is a guide book to a wide variety of topics. It will be of value to undergraduates who want to learn geometric topology and to graduate students who want examples with which they can make computations and who need an elementary description of topological spaces. Finally, the book should be interesting to other scientists and mathematicians who want to learn some examples of topological spaces.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Self Teaching Text for Beginners in Topology.......2001-04-01

I have been trying to teach myself topology and just finished the Weeks book on the shape of space. This book in comparison was a bit tougher going and a step towards teaching myself with a standard textbook. I think the previous review must have been a friend of the author because I can't say I was as enthusiastic about the book (and anyway it is a feat in itself to create paper models from the primative rapidograph drawings the author provides). I found it hard to follow the author's style and would have preferred more precision in his language. The drawings may be clear to the author but they were very confusing to me. I am not a bad artist and would find it impossible to create real life models from those drawings, many of which are a mess. On the positive side, Professor Carter relates the flavor of topology like the appetizers before a sumptuous banquet. I learned a little bit more about the subject and he shares the results of his personal research which is always good. In sum, it was a good read and probably deserves a reread. It was not a great read.

5 out of 5 stars This book taught me how to see........1997-12-29

There are hundreds of diagrams of surfaces in the book. I (with assistance from my wife and two teenage children) built virtually every one with scissors, tape, and glue. We were amazed at the number of interesting questions about the shape of space that were raised in the process. In answering them, we have come to look at the world differently. Even an ordinary chair is seen as a movie with elementary changes from frame to frame. My wife made connections with sewing. We got ideas for dozens of science fair projects. We developed the beginnings of an intuition about objects in four dimensions. I will always look back on the period when I read this book as one of the exciting times of my life. The book earns my very highest recommendation.
