Book Description
Occasional clashes between parents and children are not uncommon, but when defiant behavior — such as tantrums, resistance to chores, and negativity — becomes chronic, it can cause big problems within the family. In 10 Days to a Less Defiant Child, child and family psychologist Dr. Jeff Bernstein has developed a ground-breaking 10-day program to help parents gain back control over their defiant child or teen. This powerful and exceptionally reader-friendly guide explains what causes defiance in kids, why it's so destructive to the family, and shows parents step-by-step how they can end the behavior.
Simple-to-follow and extremely effective, 10 Days to a Less Defiant Child will bring much-needed relief to the millions of frustrated parents out there living with defiant children.
Customer Reviews:
very helpful.......2007-10-05
While the author is a bit condescending towards parents, the book is helpful for developing tools for reducing defiance in children. Try it.....it seems to work.
Solid, sober, accurate advice.......2007-10-01
10 Days to a Less Defiant Child is a brilliant book, written by an author who has obvious experience dealing with defiant children and is written in an easy-to-read style. It's already made a huge difference with our seven-year-old son, and we've only just finished Day 3. Of course, like any "self help" book, this one requires changes in the parental "self." So be prepared to read carefully and put the advice to practice, both now and later. The rewards are worth the effort.
I'm a true believer.......2007-09-23
I didn't think this book would work. I read the other reviews before I purchased, and figured all I had to lose was the cash. I was already at the end of my rope. In one week, I cannot believe the change I see in my son! Don't let me fool you, we had to change too, my husband and myself, but omg the difference and the calm in our house is unbelievable, and I'm only on day 6 ! Well worth it. We spent thousands on a shrink and went no where. I spent less than $20 on this book!
Although my boys didn't grow halos in ten days..........2007-09-19
Although my boys didn't grow halos in ten days, I found this book to be very helpful in raising a very defiant six year old and his three year old brother who is beginning to copy his big brothers behavior. There were three points in the program that I was able to implement immediately: 1. Start listening to your child. 2. Stop the yelling. 3. Pick your battles.
I know the term "pick your battles" has been around forever, but the author really showed how to implement it. Staying calm and not yelling has kept my stress level much lower. Often my child is surprised when I ask him (calmly!) to explain why he is behaving inappropriately. It will often diffuse a full blown tantrum. This is the first book about defiant behavior that has given some help and hope.
Reassuring Guide to better parenting........2007-08-12
I feel better as a parent after reading Dr. Bernstein's book. But at times it is difficult in certain situations to adapt his philosphies to te real world. Maybe it takes practice and time. The book definetly identifies the triggers that increase negative behavior, which I found very helpful
Book Description
There were 26--not 13--British colonies in America in 1776. Of these, the six colonies in the Caribbean--Jamaica, Barbados, the Leeward Islands, Grenada and Tobago, St. Vincent; and Dominica--were among the wealthiest. These island colonies were closely related to the mainland by social ties and tightly connected by trade. In a period when most British colonists in North America lived less than 200 miles inland and the major cities were all situated along the coast, the ocean often acted as a highway between islands and mainland rather than a barrier.
The plantation system of the islands was so similar to that of the southern mainland colonies that these regions had more in common with each other, some historians argue, than either had with New England. Political developments in all the colonies moved along parallel tracks, with elected assemblies in the Caribbean, like their mainland counterparts, seeking to increase their authority at the expense of colonial executives. Yet when revolution came, the majority of the white island colonists did not side with their compatriots on the mainland.
A major contribution to the history of the American Revolution, An Empire Divided traces a split in the politics of the mainland and island colonies after the Stamp Act Crisis of 1765-66, when the colonists on the islands chose not to emulate the resistance of the patriots on the mainland. Once war came, it was increasingly unpopular in the British Caribbean; nonetheless, the white colonists cooperated with the British in defense of their islands. O'Shaughnessy decisively refutes the widespread belief that there was broad backing among the Caribbean colonists for the American Revolution and deftly reconstructs the history of how the island colonies followed an increasingly divergent course from the former colonies to the north.
Customer Reviews:
ever wonder why...........2003-03-10
Have you ever wondered about the thirteen colonies decided to fight for to become an independent country in 1776 while other British colonies in the Caribbean such as Trinidad and Tabago and Jamaica did not? O'Shaughnessy attempts to explain these differences by look at the conditions of the 13 colonies and the British Caribbean such as trade, slave populations and cultural differences. He also looks at how American independence affected the British Caribbean by cutting of vital trade roots and reducing its influence in London Parliament.
Fascinating.......2001-01-17
A thorough treatment of a topic that few people (or at least me) had ever considered. Far from being insignificant islands, the Caribbean colonies were just as important to the British as the American colonies, and O'Shaughnessy makes a convincing case that the difference in the colonies' attitude towards Britain (and indeed, the principal reason for the American Revolution in the first place) is principally due to economic factors.
I really enjoyed this book; I am an economist so my interest in such a topic may not coincide with the typical reader, but I thought I learned a lot about something I had never really thought too much about.

Superb analysis of managing rifts in Jewish community.......2005-08-29
Jewish unity faces constant challenges, most recently in the anguished debate over Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, which was split largely across religious lines. Dr. Ferziger performs an important service in this book by tracing the roots of conflict between observant and non-observant Jews in 18th- and 19th-Century Europe and focusing on how communities managed to work together. From Budapest to Berlin, Ferziger describes the pain and puzzlement of Orthodox Jews as they watched family and friends violate the Sabbath and flout other halakhic observances while seeking to connect with the outside world. Although the notions of hierarchy that evolved may seem patronizing, they served as important tools for those among the Orthodox who sought to create a big tent that would not exclude their wayward brethren. Ferziger writes with sensitivity and style, offering a superb analysis of how Jews worked hard to bridge significant rifts and find common ground.
Book Description
A rediscovered 1930s notebook charts the construction of the Empire State Building. Constructed in eleven months, the 1250-foot Empire State Building, the world's tallest skyscraper from 1931 to 1971, was a marvel of modern engineering. The frame rose more than a story a day; no comparable building since has matched that rate of ascent. The construction of the Empire State Building was orchestrated by general contractors Starrett Brothers and Eken, premier "skyline builders" of the 1920s. They scheduled the delivery of materials and the construction and recorded daily the number of workers by trade. Compiled from these records, an in-house notebook documented the construction process. Meticulously typed on graph paper and illustrated with construction photographs, this unique document combines a professional specificity of detail with a charming rhapsody to the firm's crowning achievement.
Customer Reviews:
The "Dead Sea Scrolls" of the Empire State Building........2000-08-11
This is actually three stories in one. First, the discovery of a personal notebook documenting the construction of the ESB by an involved, but unknown author. Meticuously typed, with photographs, the manuscript was obviously a labor of love. Second, the written manuscript provides details of the construction which are engrossing, and the notebook's photos show the processes of constuction - not what was done but how they did it. Finally, the first 40+ pages provide a great summary of the ESB's history for the uninitiated. One of the most intriguing aspects of this book are the full-page photocopies of the notebook's actual pages, which only add to the historical sense and mystique of the manuscript. A great gift for the "construction-type" in your life, which is how I got mine...after numerous hints.
Astonishing insight in the building process of this landmark.......2000-06-19
Based on actual records the construction company kept during the building process, this book gives an insight of how such an astonishing effort was completed. The whole process of buying the spot, finding an architect(!), tearing down the existing building, design, and building the Empire State took only 22 months. It's an outstanding example of how the management of a very complex project can be done and a must read for everyone in the software industry ;-). Fun to browse through yourself, a sure hit as a gift to anyone interested or working in architecture, construction or project management.
Book Description
A guide to renovation design for architects and engineers. The design of renovations is like any other building design, but more complicated, because the questions that architects and engineers face in the process are complicated by the existing building's form, materials, peculiarities of age, and construction. The Design of Renovations outlines the basic pertinent principles of design and construction and explains how to apply them to renovation that meets the physical and aesthetic needs of the job, given the constraints of the materials involved. Dozens of actual case studies illustrate the practical application of the theory, methods, and procedures.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2001-09-23
A must for the collector. color photo's and detailed drawings and pictures. This is the way to do it right. Includes Inception of the Globemasters, phototypes leading up to the C-17, Development History -photo's in the building stages - many, Missions, Productions list, and Specs, A "gotta a have one".
Very Good Reference on the C-17.......2001-08-14
I enjoy this book immensely. If you're an enthusiast, you know that there aren't a lot of books currently available on the C-17; the plane is just too new. The C-17 is, however, a fascinating plane, and if you're eager for more info you won't be disappointed with this book. The textual content is first rate. It has a very pleasing rhythm and balance. If you have other aerospace books on your shelf you know that sometimes the writer is very technically knowledgeable without possessing adequate writing skills. Or, the information is unbalanced (e.g., too much history, too little technical, or vice versa). This book was both written well, and edited well. The photos, too, are very good. While most are black-and-white [there are several pages of 4-color photos], they are well printed and not distracting because of their monochromatic nature as in some other, cheaper publications. I was also impressed with the tidbits of information that Norton delivers. You'll read about and see information on hidden features (e.g., jacks, APUs, exterior lights, etc.). All in all, it's a very well delivered presentation on the newest airlifter, and a worthy addition to your aerospace library.
A profusely illustrated history of this remarkable aircraft.......2001-06-08
With less than a decade from its first flight, and with production less than halfway through its presently federally funded run, the C-17A Globemaster II is still considered a young aircraft. Aviation specialist Bill Norton presents the reader with a profusely illustrated history of this remarkable American military aircraft's gestation, development, unique features, strategic and tactical airlift missions; and service record to date. Boeing C-17A Globemaster III is a remarkable and impressive addition to any personal, professional, academic, or community library aviation history collection.
Book Description
An account of American bridge design, from familiar monuments to modest structures that offer eloquent statements of problems solved.
Bridges are such ubiquitous features of the built environment that we cross most of them barely acknowledging their presence. Certain bridges, however, command attention: for their utility facilitating travel from here to there; for their size, setting, beauty, or historical associations. Ordinary or spellbinding, every bridge is a response to a problemthe spanning of a river or other obstacle, solved more or less elegantly. This visual sourcebook surveys American bridges from coast to coast in terms of four fundamental structural types (beam, arch, truss, and suspension) and the special category of movable bridges (swing, lift, and bascule), showing how similar structural ideas have been addressed by different designers, refined over time, and rendered in various building materials. A special feature is "A Call for Preservation" of the American bridge engineering heritage by Eric DeLony, formerly chief of the Historic American Engineering Record, National Park Service. 952 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
A survey highly recommended .......2007-07-27

Norton motorcycle history.......2007-01-29
This provides a good history of Norton motorcycles and their racing history with a fantastic collection of photographs.
If you are a race fan.......2002-02-05
I enjoyed the book. However, I did find that the impressive coverage of Norton's illustrious racing history came at the expense of the technical and corporate history. Some may not find this a fault, but I was looking for more information on production models. And there simply wasn't enough mention of the twins with which us Yanks are most familiar (I can't afford a Manx but a Commando is a possibility...) If you are a fan of the singles that made Norton a great name in motorsports, you will like this book. It is well written and informative.
