Book Description
This is the story of one soldier's last fight at the Belgium town of Noville, an outpost of Bastogne. Orders were to hold this crossroads at any cost until the defenses of Bastogne could be strengthened. This book is an infantryman's memory of this terrible battle, including his close calls with death and the story of how he and his partner destroyed a Tiger tank from just a few feet away. It is a bloody tale of a bloody fight. Some of that blood came form PFC Addor when he was hit twice in just a couple of minutes.
Mr. Addor describes his struggle to stay alive while all alone on the foggy battle field, including how he invented a new type of tournequet to keep from bleeding to death, and his unbelievable rescue and escape from surrounded Bastogne. The book also tells of his Army medical treatment and rehabilitation, which included extensive therapy to help him learn to walk on an artifical leg. Mr. Addor also relates several other combat experiences against the Germans during World War II. Praise for Noville Outpost to Bastogne
Your book Noville Outpost to Bastogne is a gem and was a joy to read. Your recall of events was amazing in the depiction of the episodes during your period with the 20th Armored Infantry Battalion. World War II veterans and students of that great period in our history would all benefit from a reading of your story. The detailed descriptions of your injury and the recuperative procedures reveal an inner courage and will serve as a model for other injured GIs, whatever the war, to emulate. As a former high school colleague from the good old days, I admire you for putting your story together and wish you all the best with book sales. Malcolm Lawrence, WWII Veteran, 8th Air Force, 94th Bomb Group
We have a talented author among us. I purchased a book entitled Noville Outpost to Bastogne: My Last Battle, at our club picnic and have had difficulty putting it down as soon as I started reading it. It is written by our own, long-term member, Don Addor. He can be very proud of his fine work. It is about his many battles including the Battle of the Bulge, with the 20th Armored Infantry Battalion, 10th Division, General Patton's Third Army. The book is well written, extremely interesting and well worth the $20.00 purchase price. I sincerely hope each of you will buy this outstanding book for an added bonus to your personal library. Thanks Don for this very rewarding personal pleasure of reading your fine book. I hope you enjoyed writing it as much as I enjoyed reading it. Book Description
The Ardennes offensive in December 1944, known to history as the “Battle of the Bulge”, was the decisive campaign of the war in North-West Europe. When the attack in the north by 6th Panzer Army failed, Hitler switched the focus of the offensive to General Manteuffel’s 5th Panzer Army farther south. Overwhelming the green US 106th Division, German Panzers flooded towards the River Meuse. Barring their way was the crossroads town of Bastogne, reinforced at the last minute by the paratroopers of the 101st Airborne, the ‘Screaming Eagles”. The stage was set for one of the epic struggles of the war – the battle for Bastogne.

Been there, done that.......2006-07-02
This purchase was a gift for my father who was there during the St. Vith conflict. He immediately picked up this book and started reading it. I saw him shaking his head yes as he read. This was such a tough time for an 18 year old small town America kid to experience. Reading about this experience in his life, so long after the fact, is allowing him to process the horrific experience of St. Vith and the Bulge and come to terms with it. He lost so many friends during this campaign. One comment he made was that it was about time that something was written about St. Vith because without this battle, the Bulge and its outcome may have been different. So, to the men of the Lucky Seventh, thank you.
Bastogne Occupies only 25 Percent of the Book.......2006-01-15
Osprey Campaign books are excellent sources for condensed history. The photos are good and 3-dimensional graphics ideal for studying the battle. BATTLE OF THE BULGE 1944 (2) BASTOGNE's solitary shortcoming is that it spends such a short portion of the book on Bastogne. Essentially, Zaloga's work is an overview of the entire Ardennes campaign.
This is a good book to add to your military library, but the title is a little misleading.
Good book, poor layout.......2005-11-20
Zaloga gives the reader, as usual, a concise, educated analysis of the fighting in the northern part of the Ardennes offensive. Particularly useful is the accurate and sobering description of the deficiencies in the German fighting man, even the vaunted SS troops, and in the leadership of the Waffen SS.
The problem with the book is in the poor layout. Zaloga describes the battles by naming villages and axes of advance, but the maps frequently do not show these at all, or if they are there, they are pages and pages away from the text. This undermines an excellent narrative. Likewise, the color illustrations were prepared with evident lack of forethought -- the focus of the illustration is frequently planted square in the center of the page, and this is disastrous in a two-page illustration, as the binding runs right down the middle of the item (usually, a vehicle) being illustrated.
I'd rate Zaloga's neat summary a 4-star job, and the book's poor layout by Osprey a 2, and that's being nice. I'll rate the book a 3 overall.
Editing.......2005-10-31
Can't believe this author (and Osprey editors) continually misspell the name of W/SS Gruppenfuehrer Hermann Priess, Ritterkreuz holder, it's annoying...
Another Great Volume from Zaloga.......2005-01-20
The Battle of the Bulge is one of those subjects in military history that has been so over-covered that readers must be wary of new volumes on this subject, many of which only repackage what other writers did earlier. Fortunately, Steven Zaloga's second volume in the Osprey Campaign series is a well-written narrative that can stand on its own merits. This second volume focuses the southern half of the Ardennes front, including the fighting around Bastogne. Zaloga's writing style is in fine fettle in this volume and although much of the material is familiar, it is presented with incisive comment and penetrating analysis. Even if you have other "Bulge" books on your shelf already, this volume and its companion are well worth having.
Zaloga's opening sections on the strategic situation, opposing plans, opposing leaders and opposing armies are a bit shorter than usual since much of this material was also covered in the first volume. The order of battle provided is a bit overly succinct since it lists only division-level units; certainly the German Volks artillery corps and the US engineer units at Bastogne should have been listed. The elements of Patton's 3rd Army that broke through to Bastogne as well as the 101st Airborne Division are omitted. Zaloga provides five 2-D maps (German objectives in the southern sector, 5th Panzer army vs. 28th Division, 7th Army vs. XII Corps, Patton's Relief of Bastogne, Eliminating the Bulge) and three 3-D maps (Bastogne Encircled, Battle for the road junctions, Blunting the Spearhead). The three color battle scenes by Peter Dennis and Howard Gerrard are: Christmas in Bastogne, Operation Bodenplatte and Spearhead to the Meuse.
The author's description of the 5th Panzer Army's attack on the 28th Infantry Division is excellent, although I wish he had given some mention of what was left of the "Bloody Bucket" after this 2-day epic fight. As Zaloga describes it, the German Panzer Lehr Division had a brief opportunity to get into Bastogne on the third day of the offensive (December 18) but squandered the chance due to over-caution. Although Bastogne was the major intermediate objective for 5th Panzer Army, it is clear that the Germans never allocated sufficient forces to deal with this thorn in their side. Zaloga also briefly covers air operations over the Ardennes, although much of the focus is on Operation Bodenplatte, the surprise German air attack on New Years day.
Zaloga also covers the futile attack of the German 7th Army on the southern flank (which is usually ignored in many accounts), the final German effort to push 2nd Panzer Division and Panzer Lehr toward the Meuse and the Allied counterattack. Zaloga also includes some of the controversies of the campaign, such as Field Marshal Montgomery's temporary command over US forces near the Meuse and his unwillingness to counterattack the over-extended Germans. Like most authors, Zaloga also believes that the Allied failure to cut off the German salient in a pincer operation was overly-cautious and allowed more Germans to escape to fight again. In sum, this volume provides an excellent operational summary of a hard-fought and close-run campaign.
Book Description
One of the most dramatic episodes of the Ardennes campaign took place in the small crossroads town of Bastogne, Belgium. The defense of the town was entrusted to the 101st Airborne Division which carried no heavy artillery or tanks and yet was surrounded by a steel ring of three German panzer divisions that massively outgunned the paratroopers. When the German commander of the besieging forces demanded surrounded from American leader, General Anthony McAuliffe, he received one of the most famous replies in military history: "Nuts." The American s held on desperately to the town for more than three days. On Christmas day, the Germans tried one last massive offensive against the tired troops. The airborne troopers, using the last of their meager weapons with bravery, heroism and determination, stopped wave after wave of white-clad Germans until clearing weather allowed Allied planes and Patton's tanks to finally lift the siege.
Drawing on eyewitness accounts, this excellent book paints a graphic picture of the battle that was at the very center of Hitler's last gamble. Numerous photos through the text illustrate then and now scenes and bring to life the epic battle.

The Battle for Bastogne in 156 Text & Photo Pages.......2001-12-02
As with all of the books in the Battleground Europe series, BASTOGNE is a combination of historical overview, selective detailed reference and compendium of italicized first-hand accounts. This book is not meant to be an in depth study of the Ardennes Campaign around Bastogne, but a concentrated dose of the battle and helpful roadside touring information. There are some "Then and Now" type comparisons, however on the whole the book is very similar to the US Army War College series (Which, by the way, was not published the the US Army War College) guides to Civil War sites. Currently this is the second book book in the Battle of the Bulge segment of the series. The first book, St. Vith, is in the same format. As a supplemental reference to the battles around Bastogne, this book is highly recommended. If you are planning a visit to Bastogne, I recommend that this reference be packed along with your travel brochures, Micheln guides and roadmaps.

This volume in the Sources in Modern History series situates the period of exploration within three central themes. First, the documents examine how European speculations and expectations guided the exploratory enterprise from its inception. Second, the exploration period emerges as an era of mutual discovery between Indians and Europeans. And third, the literature of exploration is presented as a means to understanding the changing face of the American landscape.

Lovebird Atlas Books A2.......2006-05-14
I realy love this book, it was just what I was looking for. The only thing negative was the shipping! It was sent flat letter with no bubble wrap, all the corners were bent and indentations in the hard color. The book is great, but the condition I recieved it in was not good. The cover was 20 to 30 % damaged.

Dr. Alessandro D'Angieri, a Brazilian physician with an interest in ornithology, is a researcher at the State University of Campinas's Zoology Department (UNICAMP) who has dedicated his life to the study and preservation of Brazilian and foreign birds. His deep interest in genetic diversity is reflected in this text devoted to the 262 species and 63 genera of the family Psittacidae and subfamily Psittacinae known as Agapornis.
Agapornis form nine distinct forms in the wilds of continental Africa and the coastal region of the island of Madagascar. Dr. D'Angieri includes a map showing the original homeland of these little birds, many of them threatened by the encroachment of humans, who range across an area just South of the Equator. The book also includes hundreds of beautiful photos indicating the identity of these confusing little creatures.
Apparently, the coloring of companion birds here in the States is the result of lots of cross-breeding around the world. I certainly cannot keep it all straight even after perusing Dr D'Angieri's book, let alone know whether a particular type is caused by hybridization, mutation or metabolic disorder. Color in the diet does not appear to affect the color of the birds, although a healthy diet will certainly improve their feather coloration. .
I raise Agapornis otherwise known as Lovebirds and include several Personata and Roseacollis types in my collection. Two of my Personata companions include a pair of Cobalt blue-black masked twins. According to the author, this coloration is not common. Using Dr. D'Angieri's book I have been able to identify the coloration of several other birds, but this is an incredibly complex book so the photographs are very important and if a picture of a particular type does not exist, I cannot identify it at all.
I enjoyed this obviously professional book immensely, even if it includes more material than I can hold in my head, and will use it as a reference. I don't know if I will ever use it to guide the mating of birds to obtain a specific coloration for which it seems designed.
Interesting and informative........2002-12-11
This book is becoming slightly dated as new mutations have arisen, and some pics show birds in other than their best plumage. These minor faults aside, the genetic explanations and practical knowledge available to the breederin this book are most useful. And many (if not all) of the pictures are terrific. Other volumes or info on the web are needed for detailed lovebird care, but this book is most useful re: mutations and their selection.

This book is a must for anyone who is interested in the SCIENCE of professional breeding, especially for unusual color (read: more expensive birds)... it is truly NOT for the casual bird fancier. If you're buying it to better understand, care for and enjoy your pet, you will be disappointed. (Note: This reviewer believes that the breeding of birds should be left to professionals. Breeding birds 'casually' or 'at-home' is not a good practice. Baby birds are more than a lot of work, and there are many things that can go wrong, causing anguish to both owners and birds.)

Book Description
In the decades following the Civil War--as industrialization, urbanization, and economic expansion increasingly reshaped the landscape--many Americans began seeking adventure and aesthetic gratification through avian pursuits. By the turn of the century, hundreds of thousands of middle-and upper-class devotees were rushing to join Audubon societies, purchase field guides, and keep records of the species they encountered in the wild. Mark Barrow vividly reconstructs this story not only through the experiences of birdwatchers, collectors, conservationists, and taxidermists, but also through those of a relatively new breed of bird enthusiast: the technically oriented ornithologist. In exploring how ornithologists struggled to forge a discipline and profession amidst an explosion of popular interest in natural history, A Passion for Birds provides the first book-length history of American ornithology from the death of John James Audubon to the Second World War.
Barrow shows how efforts to form a scientific community distinct from popular birders met with only partial success. The founding of the American Ornithologists' Union in 1883 and the subsequent expansion of formal educational and employment opportunities in ornithology marked important milestones in this campaign. Yet by the middle of the twentieth century, when ornithology had finally achieved the status of a modern profession, its practitioners remained dependent on the services of birdwatchers and other amateur enthusiasts. Environmental issues also loom large in Barrow's account as he traces areas of both cooperation and conflict between ornithologists and wildlife conservationists.
Recounting a colorful story based on the interactions among a wide variety of bird-lovers, this book will interest historians of science, environmental historians, ornithologists, birdwatchers, and anyone curious about the historical roots of today's birding boom.

Great Book.......2002-10-09
Lundrigan tells it like it truly is in Northern Minnesota, sharing his pains, passions, and sorrows, in this memoir of his life journey where partridge hunting is the moderator and one of the few constants. Without trying he makes a case for the necessity of hunting, not to eat but to have one's spirit filled.
Much of the story takes place in the land of my own journeying, and I followed the story on my topographical maps. After reading I felt a tremendous urge to go there, to see the land Lundrigan writes about. I didn't. The journey outlined is not one of the physical, but of the spirit, impossible to recreate, but totally able to be experienced within one's soul on a brisk fall day.
This is absolutely the best book I have read on the spirit of the hunt. I recommend it to absolutley anyone who has experienced the thrill of flushing a covey and not known how to explain it; Lundrigan explains it perfectly.
A series of artistic yet manly grouse hunting tales........1999-11-19
In this book, the author takes the reader on several grouse hunting trips over a period of many years in an area of farmlands and woodlots in the upper midwestern U.S. The reader is treated to stories of the lives of Scandanavian farmers, living and dead, as well as insights drawn from the author's personal experiences. The sport, the outdoor environment, the game, and the hunters blend in ways that are at times humorous, at times poignant, and often seen with an artistic eye. This is an excellent book for anyone who has spent more than a few days hunting grouse in the hardwoods of eastern North America.
The autobiography of an excellent grouse hunter.......1998-11-26
Straight from the heart. Ted Lundrigan's "Hunting the Sun" is a passionate autobiography of his grouse hunting days. Chapter by chapter, Ted talks you through one of his many hunting trips. The man is clearly an authority on grouse but also on life. In several sections, Ted reflects over key events in his life (Vietnam, the death of his daughter) giving the reader a true insight into his life and personality.
In particular, I liked some of the later chapters when Ted talks about hunting with friends or hunting over the ground of a pair of local farmers.
