The Teenage Girl's Survival Guide: A Must Read.......2005-10-28
Yvonne Collins & Sandy Rideout
Totally Me
The book was basically a teenage girl's survival guide, because it provides you with a variety of different sections on life as a teenage girl. It has sections on boys, and how to deal with them, how to flirt, how to deal with your best friend when she's having problems, and how to deal with your own problems. Teenagers have a lot of stress and things to go through, and this book shows you that even though you may think something is the end of the world right now, it may not be. Sometimes you need to take a step back from your situation, and look at it from someone else's point of view. If that doesn't help, call up the girl's and throw a slumber party, to get your mind off of whatever you're worrying about.
I think that mostly teenage girls everywhere would enjoy this book, because there are so many things you can relate to. There are quizzes for you to take to see if the guy you like likes you, to see if you've been a great friend, to test your flirting IQ, and to see if you know when to ask your parents for something and have the highest result of them actually giving it to you. It has a lot of humor that makes you laugh out loud. I know that when I was reading it, there wasn't ever a time I wasn't hysterical.
I would definitely recommend this book to every single teenage girl. It's got so much helpful information, and it reminds you that life's curveballs are what makes life interesting. It keeps you thinking not to sweat the small stuff, and to actually get up the courage to talk to the guy of your dreams. It was really an all around great read.
okay, but not the best........2005-05-11
After reading it, I didn't feel that I really related to it..it focused to much on the typical girl teen-and most girls arn't typical by someone else's standards. These kinds of books are supposed to encourage being yourself- but the vibe i got from this book was rather the opposite.
Not the best choice..........2004-04-15
After reading reviews about this, I thought this book was going to be very good. But after getting it home, I learned it had nothing in it I actually didn't know. It seems like something a 9 year old would read. It had totally corny stories to support things and anything in the book could have been told to me in a more mature way in any of the magazines(...). I'm a freshman in high school and I wouldn't recommend this to anyone over the age of 10. Look elsewhere!
This book...........2001-07-14
This book was great I havent finished it yet but I love it! I hope the authors decide to write another book. At first I wasnt sure if I wanted to get the book but as I flipped through it I thought it looked good so I got! I think I made a good decision and I think that all girls that are turning 12 or 13 or 14 or hoigher should get the book because we have alot of questions to embarrassing to say out loud and this book answered all of them! Guys wouldnt understand this book though but girls 12 and up would so I think you should get it!
Keeping Communication Lines Open...........2001-02-22
My soon to be 13 year old daughter really enjoyed this book, particularly the quizzes and the sections on parents, friends, boys, etc... simply the whole book! The book has sparked many interesting and healthy discussions between us. It would have been great to have had a resource like this when I was her age.
In my opinion, any book that gets a teen talking to a parent is good news! I highly recommend it as a worthwhile addition to any home library.

Book Description
There may not be a cure for adolescence, but there are ways for parents of teens to survive these challenging years! Parenting expert Tom McMahon has gone straight to the source -- veteran moms and dads -- to try and solve the mysteries of raising a happy, healthy teenager. Gathered here are hundreds of practical, creative, and proven tips that cover all aspects of parenting a teen:
- Rules and Discipline -- Keep order while encouraging your child's independence, and pick your "battles" for what matters the most
- Talking and Listening -- Get to know when to sympathize, when to back off, and how to deal with your teen's inevitable moodiness
- School and Learning -- free yourself from being the "homework cop," while nurturing both curiosity and enthusiasm
- Friendships and Relationships -- Use role-playing to handle peer pressure, and help nurture healthy relationships
- Drugs and Alcohol -- Pinpoint telltale signs of problems before they become serious, and stay involved by providing alternatives to parties with alcohol
- Responsibility and Money -- Strike a balance between chores and allowance, and make part-time jobs an introduction to money management
- Self-esteem and Values -- Enhance your teen's exposure to role models who will strengthen character and boost self-confidence.
Whatever the situation, teen tips is full of down-to-earth, inventive advice. It's an indespensable guide to navigating the teen years -- and making the journey as rewarding for the parent as it is for the aspiring young adult.

Excellent communication strategies!.......2000-03-16
I'm a 30 yr. old, married woman who doesn't have kids yet, but I can assure you that Tom's tips will be used when that day comes! Tom's "tips" are universal and apply to many of the CURRENT issues facing teens and their parents today. Furthermore, it's a book I have highly recommended to many of my friends who have children that are just now entering adolescence.
A Book For All Ages.......2000-03-16
As a 21 year old college student who is more than a few years away from being the parent of a teenager, I have gained a broad range of perspective from reading Tom McMahon's Teen Tips. Not only was I able to relate firsthand to many of the issues presented, but I also came to realize what a complex and educational experience it is for parents in cultivating nurturing relationships with their teens. I appreciated the personal accounts that are so prevalent in this book, as they help to make the approach more personal of the issues at hand. McMahon does not "sugar coat," oversimplify, or overdramatize the issues that he speaks about, which is refreshing and realistic in a time when all too many adults want to be a "pal" instead of a guide to teens. I will definitely keep this book so that I may refer to it in working with adolescents as a teacher, and in parenting teenagers of my own. There is a multitude of creative and loving strategies toward building healthy relationships with teenagers in Tom McMahon's book and I definitely recommend reading it to those who are teachers, and to those who work or live with a teenager.
"Teen Tips" extra tip.......2000-03-14
I am a single mother, divorced with three children in this age catagory. While I found most of the tips helpful, I found the book lacking in advice for divorced parents. More than 50% of homes are now divorced and less than one chapter is dedicated to this issue. I would also like to add my own tip...never talk bad about your ex-spouse in front of the kids. This cuts like a knife into their very soul. The author has my permission to use this in his next revision. Carole V., Hayward, CA
There is hope for parents........2000-03-14
With much enthusiasm I welcomed the book into my readings and I am greatful for it.The format this book was written in, gave it creadability. It is nice to be reminded that other parents are going through the same situation my parents went through with me. The intergration of different people from different locations in the country helps the reader to connect with parents from across the nation. Parents and their methods of dealing with their teen's issues were creative and seem simple to understand. Along with real parents sharing their methods in raising their children, the information given by the author, was excellent in letting the reader understand what issue the parents was dealing with. So finally, if you want to be in a good relationship with your teens then read this book.
Parents: answers you need are finally here!.......2000-03-14
I found Teen Tips,Tom McMahon, to be a very resourceful book for whatever stage of parenting you are in. I have shared this book with family and friends who are discovering the challenges of raising an adolescent. It is beneficial for parents to realize that thier situation is not unique, there are other parents who have experienced the same challenges(and survived). By being able to utilize some of the parental survial skills, and reaffirming my "parental rights" has been inspiring in connecting with teens in my family. I encourage parents to add this book to thier collection and use as your own personal referral. Thank you Tom McMahon!

Compassionate writing, for Dads, too; not just Mom/Grandmom.......2002-08-31
Stacey Roberts is a trainer /coach /physical therapist/ counselor/ friend who has worked with adolescent girls for 15 years. She writes with wit and compassion about girls' teen years and their need for relationships to help steady down the turmoil in family and the developing self. While she cites various authorities on teen years, she has developed her own compassionate authority from her experiences. She is, in a sense, a "natural" therapist, one of those genuinely helpful persons who has great empathy for teens.
It is not so much a "survival guide" as an affirmation of how important relationships are, especially when they change during a girl's maturation. Roberts is clear about the importance of fathers in this affirmation. In a divorce situation, she astutely observes that girls often reserve their anger and confusion for their moms and hold back on their (more distant) dads. Her recommendations make good sense--talking things through, affirmation, being clear about limits, asking about the girl's feelings.
I think men will get a lot from this book, also. We know that when fathers pull back from daughters in their teen years, many girls end up hurt/confused/wounded/angry, so it is important to maintain an appropriate relationship with your daughter. Roberts is on the right track.
Thanks from a grateful grandmother........2000-06-11
Kudos to the Breast Fairy author! My daughter, who had her own supreme struggles with the Breast Fairy as a teen, is now the mother of three girl-women (ah, justice!). We've both prayed for a book like this! Seldom does one find such an honest, clear, practical guide such as Stacey Roberts has written. Too bad this book can't be "required reading" after the baby shower, but then this gives loving mothers like myself a great gift for our daughters (and their daughters) when it's most needed! A grateful grandmother.

This is a great book. It is clear and concise and easy to read. Subtle humor throughout to helps lighten the mood.
I am a psychologist and I have worked with teens for years. There are old and new ideas presented in a very organized and helpful way. I found this book because I now have my teen grandchild living with me. What a great resource. I highly recommend it for any parent or grandparent of a teen.
