US Air Force Scrapbook.......2006-02-23
This item was above my expectations. Is being used as a memory book for memorial service. Could not ask for a better product.
Book Description
Arranged in a Q & A format, this handbook covers all the basics: different types of beads, tools, materials, techniques for 18 easy projects (each building on the one before), and 14 more challenging ones. Incorporate knotting, use pressure crimps and stitching to make ornaments, jewelry, needlepoint, a wrapped candleholder, and more. “Benson takes the mystery out of basic beadwork techniques.”—Library Journal.
Customer Reviews:
A beginners must.......2003-05-18
This was one of the first books I bought when taking up a new hobbie, I hightly recommend it.
Nice assortment of beading projects.......2002-08-31
What I really notice about this book is its wide assortment of large and nicely photographed projects, from simple to complex, easy to difficult, from earrings to bookmarks. The projects are also pretty and elegant in my opinion, and the workmanship looks professional.
There are a few projects a beginner could do without much difficulty, such as gluing beads to a wooden form, or stringing beads on an elastic cord for making bracelets. Many other projects would be difficult for a beginner to follow without prior experience. For those with some background knowledge and experience, I think the instructions and the colored diagrams showing threading techniques are clear and easy to follow.
The more advanced projects, among others, include weaving beads on a loom to make a bookmark, threading beads into a beautiful celtic knot design for making a necklace and squared-needle weaving to make a pretty beaded pouch that can also be hung from a necklace.
As one reviewer complained, there are a few holes in the instructions, with the assumption you already know how to do basic techniques such as "using round-nosed pliers, form a loop in end of head pin". For this reason, this is not truly a book for beginners. For a person who knows the basics, this book has lots of ideas and projects from which to choose. Since it is difficult to follow instructions in any book for detailed work such as this, I recommend taking a class first and then buying this book for building skills and getting inspiration.
Terrible lack of technique, instructions out of order........2002-04-12
I am a beading beginner who has done some simple stringing on my own and wishes to find books to show me some fun projects with which I can learn some pattern stitches and most importantly, techniques for working with findings and finishing strings in a clean & professional manner. I had hoped the Ann Benson books would help but I find she is a second rate author and although she may be able to teach in person, these books are terrible for a beginner: they contain patterns but do not teach, instructions for projects are out of order, materials required are not sufficiently explained, techniques are not explained. They claim to be written for beginners {in both titles, for crying out loud} but are instead incredibly frustrating as you need to look elsewhere for HOW to do the things you will be asked to do. How do you "create a loop in the headpin using round nosed pliers"? How do you "close crimp neither too flatly nor loosely with needle nosed pliers"?
In addition, I'm really annoyed with the poor quality of work shown in the book. Frankly the project photos reveal cheesy taste; lots of thread showing and not {in my estimation} very wearable or attractive end results, little of the jewelry is aesthetically pleasing being clunky, chunky stuff that I don't want to learn to make. Exceptions being a fringy pair of earrings and a fringed bag, the pattern for both can be gotten everywhere.
I'm really disappointed, I've purchased and returned "Beadwork Basics" and "Beading for the First Time" immediately. I have requested other "beginner" style beading books and will post reviews of all that I find.
WOW.......2001-12-28
This book is amazing. The detail the author go to makes beading for the first time really fun and successful. It is a definate must buy for a first time beader.
A good starter book.......2001-09-18
Ann Benson has written several bead books: Beadweaving, Beadwear, Beadwork Basics, and Two-hour Beaded Projects. Beading for the First Time contains the best of these four books, combining techniques into almost thirty projects. You will learn to bead using glue, wire, headpins, needles and thread, elastic, and many other materials to show off your beads and design skills.
At the end of the book in her artists' gallery, Ann shows the work of Jackie Hirsch, Christiana Lapatina Johnson, Sharon Bateman, Kathy Rice and Ginger Sizemore. This book is an excellent starter book, but even an advanced beader can learn a few new tricks from it.
Customer Reviews:
Introduction to Beading.......2006-07-13
This book is a great introduction into the different types of beading.
The technique section includes directions on how to decorate an object with beads, string beads on wire, on a head pin for jewelry, for multiple jewelry components, string beads on needle and thread and on elastic and monofilament, how to use pressure crimps, and sewing beads on fabric.
Some of the projects included are: beaded wire napkin ring, continuous loop necklace, knotted necklace, braided leather bracelet, bugle-beaded tassel, daisy chain anklet, wrapped candleholder, and Celtic knot necklace and earrings.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.
Book Description
"Volume 4: Four Tokyo Houses" is the fourth in a series of compilations featuring contemporary houses by PlanetArchitecture.com. In a city known for exorbitant land prices, tiny lot sizes, and high density living, the single family residence is out of the reach of many. But for those who can, the variety of styles and approaches to urban living can be dramatic as evident in the works by Atelier Hitoshi Abe, Jun Aoki and Associates, ADH Architects and Tezuka Architects.
This CD-ROM features an intuitive, multi-referenced interface used to access the entire e-archive (electronic archive) of video interviews, photographs, writings, virtual reality panoramas, and drawings. The unique graphical interface takes full advantage of the interactive media and makes the self guided explorations both user friendly and enjoyable. This e-archive provides comprehensive documentation and virtual experiences unparalleled by any single medium. Over 80 photographs of interiors, exteriors, and details document these houses like never before. 28 virtual reality panoramas (allowing 360 degree panning) take you there "virtually." 102 minutes of video interviews with the architects allow new insights in understanding these highly unique and innovative architects and the houses they built. Naomi Pollock provides an 18 minute overview in a slide show format as well as introductions to each of the four houses. A comprehensive collection of drawing (plans, elevations, sections, and concept sketches), models, and computer renderings allow you to study and analyze each project.

Book Description
Simplicity isn't just a matter of taste in Japanit's a part of the culture. But within that aesthetic there's a lot of room for diversity. This photographic sampling of some of Tokyo's most exciting and beautiful apartments displays that diversity in surprising and innovative ways.
The clutter-free rooms are filled with warm, muted colors and natural objects; they make use of such traditional materials as rice paper, tatami, wood, ceramics and stone. Yet in every corner is a wonderful surprise: a whimsical chair, a rock garden set into the floor, an Art Deco flourish in the bathroom, a rustic bamboo ladder propped on one wall. Gleaming high-tech lives in congenial harmony with old and traditional, and gentle hues are punctuated by bright spots of color. Photographed in full color and from vantage points that accentuate the seamless transitions between them, these dwellings exude a nourishing calm that belies the city's frenetic energy. Floor plans and text round out this visual tour of 50 apartments that shows how ingenuity and imagination can transform four walls into an oasis of serenity and elegance.

A luscious compendium of contemporary design.......2002-12-06
Any lover of fine design will drool thumbing through this luscious compendium of contemporary living spaces. Four hundred full color pages reflect a well tuned aesthetic that emphasizes a remarkable blending of the elements of fine design with natural materials to affect understated elegance and beauty. Seems to me that the Japanese architects and designers featured here are on the top of their trade, illustrating how simplicity, the minimalism of uncluttered spaciousness using good design can create immeasurable beauty in liveable private spaces housed in a crushingly crowded urban environment.

Book Description
'It is difficult to describe Tokyo in terms of traditional urbanism. Its population is extremely fluid and capricious. It has no tradition of architectural culture, its infrastructure is quite haphazard, and its local communities -- recently even the family unit -- have begun to disintegrate.'
The impact on Japanese cities of social and technological change is the focus of this collection of essays by Akira Suzuki, editor of Telescope magazine and Professor of Design at Kobe University. Entertaining, but equally thought-provoking, the essays describe urban rituals and catastrophes, and suggest lessons that might be learnt from them. Progressing in scale from the minimal dwelling space for the single urbanite to the dispersed urban infrastructure, they put forward a new conception of urbanism that takes account of the changes in information technology that have begun to render national boundaries meaningless.

A baby's cries distress everyone within hearing distance. When the crying won't stop, despite rocking, bouncing, feeding, and burping. parents experience helpless agony and frustration and sometimes anger and depression. This book will help soothe overwrought parents and helps them indentify the source of their baby's suffering.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book - a must read.......1999-06-05
This book was a god-send. I bought it after my baby was born, and wish I had gotten it before. I had a very difficult baby who had major dramas sleeping. This book offered lots of very helpful advice, and helped debunk some of the myths out there.
This book is a must read for any expectant parents.
