4 out of 5 stars Updated Overview Of Treasure Hunting Hobby.......2006-09-26

In the hobby of metal detecting the changes come in use of better technology and understanding and interpreting how these technological advances impact the results in the field.
With more than thirty years of practice in the hobby of metal detecting I have often read these basic princples as espoused by Charles Garrett and in truth they are always worth repeating. There is little advantage to investing in a top end metal detector or any metal detector for that matter if you do not understand and practice the techniques necessary to provide optimum results.
This book repeats these fundamentals in relation to modern equipment. Nothing more and nothing less. The author does not pretend or imply that these topics have not been previously touched upon in other books.
This book has tremendous value for the novice treasure hunter and provides updated reference to the seasoned metal detector user.

2 out of 5 stars This book is a repeat.......1998-03-09

The reason for the low rating is because this book is a repeat of Mr Garrett's book,"Let's Talk Treasure Hunting" which was first printed in 1992. Chapters and wording of "Treasure Hunting for Fun and Profit is practically identical. If you buy either book, there is no need to buy the other. These books have some information on the technics of metal detecting, but is more focused in the end in describing the kind of metal detector to use which is the Garrett detector...which is a great metal detector!

3 out of 5 stars A good book, but not as good as the first two.......2007-07-12

I am a big fan of David's and I must confess that I was a little disappointed in this book. I also own the first two, and the material there seems much more common and useful. This book includes material such as making a metal plane from a kit. The company that offered the kit is no longer in business, so the material is somewhat less relevant. There is an article on making a spokeshave adjuster for the Boggs shave. In my opinion, this is a solution looking for a problem. A small tap with a hammer like with any wood plane is a simple adjuster for the spokeshave. I just didn't find much of the material useful overall.

I guess I would much rather see more material on furniture techniques such as drawer fitting, veneering, dovetailing, and hardware fitting. But I guess this would be a different titled book!

5 out of 5 stars Another Outstanding Treatise from David Charlesworth.......2007-01-20

I eagerly anticipated the arrival of David Charlesworth's third volume, and was not disappointed. It is, in my opinion, even better that his first two excellent books on the "art" of fine woodworking. He explains in clearly understandable detail the use of "cutting edge" (no pun intended), state- of-the-art tools by Lie-Nielsen. David's books are a necessity in any workshop intent on exhibiting fine workmanship in its products. As an avid woodworker, I look forward to future volumes from David Charlesworth. I have Charlesworth DVD's which are instrumental in maintaining, sharpening and properly using Lie-Nielsen planes. No shop should be without these "learning tools". Keep up the great work, David.

His explanations are clear and understandable. I finally was able to successfully edge joint two boards after reading his explanation. I just finished a spokeshave following his instructions, and it works better than any of my store-bought ones! I hope he publishes more books.

5 out of 5 stars First rate !.......2000-01-18

Excellent Book. The chapters on tuning hand planes together with the information on Japanese chisels is superb. The improvements I made to my Record #05 have made the world of difference to it's performance. The chapter on making an ebony spokeshave, using the blade made by Ron Hock certainly made me think.

I just wish there was more available from this author.

5 out of 5 stars This really should be titled "Focus on Hand Tool Woodworking".......2006-06-07

Which is not necessarily a bad thing. If you want to learn about Power Tools, routers, sanders - then forget this book. But if what you want to discover is how to do extremely high quality work, than this is for you. Forget the comment above about sharpening. It is one of the most important skills to master if you want to work with hand tools, and there is an appropriate focus on it in this book. But also other skills, like planing techniques, fitting drawers, shooting an edge. Many skills the average woodworker seem to be lacking, but are important for great work.

It is on my top list.

        5 out of 5 stars Glad I bought it.......2004-04-13

I almost did not buy this book because of a bad reader's review. I liked the first book and decided to buy it anyhow. I am really glad I did. The chapters on making drawers is wonderful, and David follows it up with a chapter on aligning the drawers as well. Another great chapter brings you through the tapering process on curved laminated table legs.
More advanced sharpening techniques for scraper planes were a welcome addition. I have finally got mine to work properly thanks to David's advice.
There are many other good features in this book, and I am looking forward to volumn III and will buy it regardless of the reviews. Thanks David.

1 out of 5 stars Not Adequtely titled book.......2003-09-28

I bought this book thinking it would at least make reference to the title it bears. Instead it is just another approach to the already overlooked subject(in the 1st Vol.) of SHARPENING. Maybe if the books title would of been, "More demented sharpening techniques for woodworkers" I would not be so upset with it. THe book does not cover any angle of what the title suggests. The author might be a renowned woodworker but, his approach in this (and Vol. 1) is totally LAME.

        5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2003-01-21

Absolutely excellent, as is his first book. The author has a penchant for planning and careful execution that is inspiring. But, he is also very human in admitting the areas that give him trouble and suggests alternate methods for those of us who are also human and might not have the hand skills of James Krenov. He is also very honest in appraising tools by brand name and type. I have (budget allowing) followed his recommendations and been delighted with the tools he recommended. I read both of his books over and over again.

        Book Description

Everyone dreams of having a cabin in the woods-a wood-hewn structure with all (or, at least many of) the amenities of home-tucked away on a mountaintop with an awe-inspiring view, or nestled on the shore of a trout-filled stream or bass-laden lake. Most people also believe that such a dream house is just that-the stuff of dreams-not affordable, not buildable without hiring a construction crew.
Author J. Wayne Fears is here to tell you that such a dream cabin can be yours-at a price that won't break the bank. And he knows because he has done it himself. In this, a guidebook to make dreams become reality, Fears covers-in words, photos, diagrams, and blueprints-all the important points, from buying the land, to planning your structure, to actually doing it-either on your own, or with some help. With special chapters on keeping your cabin clean and pest-free, as well as with valuable information on maintenance and repair, this book is one that every cabin owner-or potential owner-will keep as a reference for years to come.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-07-09

I bought and read at least 5 different books on cabins and this one by far was the best, most informative and hence most useful of them all.

3 out of 5 stars interesting, not 'green' but interesting........2007-03-04

I recently bought a wonderful piece of land in the Catskills and am dying to start building my own rustic weekend retreat and thus have been doing research. I bought this book and gobbled it up and finished it a couple weeks ago and my feelings are still jumbled. I guess the idea of a cabin in the woods is very personal and there are many kinds of people who envision this idea differently -- this author offers advice on how to build a cabin "off the grid" for a hunting retreat, with no running water, no kitchen, but a nice rifle range.

He is very practical; I like that he recommends having a professional frame and roof the structure - I was wanting to hear that from one of the many books I have been reading. He has some good building ideas, but he considers plywood and linolium to be choice building materials. He has many very good pieces of advice on outhouses (and resources in the back like 'The Outhouse Newsletter' - who would ever know one existed?) ... and his outhouse rules as well as all his other rules are interesting to hear ... but I guess, being younger than the writer and quite frankly from a different generation it was difficult to hear about nonenvironmental practices such as killing mason bees with tennis racquets - I feel that mason bees are pollinators and I would have recommended making a mason bee home to solve the problem. There is an entire chapter on building your own rifle range; I really think people who shoot should read this chapter instead of shooting at trees like my neighbors ... but I don't shoot or hunt. He and his buddies ride around on ATV's; I hate ATV's and people who ride them-- why can't people walk and hike and enjoy nature in a 'Leave No Trace' kind of way? He thinks big grass lawns are beautiful ... I prefer ferns. If you can overlook his tendency to impose "order" on the natural landscape, then there are some helpful hints in this book. Despite my having a very different perspective on an escape in the woods, he is a very likable writer and has some good ideas.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite a "how to." .......2007-02-19

The book doesn't live up to its title's promise of "how to build your dream cabin...," though it's a pleasant book and offers a few useful ideas. If you haven't yet bought the land or built the cabin, the book is a good start, providing information about what you should think about (location, cabin style and size, floor plan, etc.) and how to get on with a few basic needs (like an outhouse, light, heat, and cooking). But you won't find any building plans here other than for a small woodshed, a bunk bed, a simple outdoor bench, and a birdhouse.

If you already have a cabin, the material in this book is less helpful. Frears tends to let you know about some types of decisions you can make (such as outhouse options or cooking options), but he's pretty short on the detail that might actually inform those decisions. For example, he says he prefers Coleman lanterns for indoor light, and propane camp stoves for indoor cooking, but he never addresses the concern of using propane appliances indoors (which ones are the safest?). In discussing kitchen options, he describes his city-water sink set-up and once mentions a grease pit, but says nothing further about grease pits. (Where, dear environmentally friendly reader, will all your dishwater go?) And given all his experience in deep woods, there's not a word about the mix of food and wildlife, except to mention mice (midnight raccoons and bear seem to be my problem when I cook outside).

I thought his absolute best piece of advice was to not skimp on bedding. Fortunately, my wife and I have a good mattress at our cabin for ourselves, but we've neglected the kid and guest beds. It's not a project that can be romanticized, but one to work on at once.

I also thought he neglects to reflect on logistics. He'll praise things like metal roofing and log siding, but not a word about how to get these to your remote spot. I imagine he drives a rather large pickup when he visits his cabins, but you won't need one to enjoy your dream cabin.

The book isn't "the ultimate guide to building and maintaining a backcountry getaway," but it's food for thought for anyone still planning to buy land and a cabin.

5 out of 5 stars Broad and deep info about how to make the dream come true.......2004-04-15

There are plenty of books with pretty pictures (or idealistic word pictures: think Thoreau) about cabins; here's a wide range of information covered in reasonable depth for anyone looking seriously at the practicalities of building or simply buying a cabin. From water supply to outhouse to simple plans for building benches around a fire ring, the author provides not only the wisdom of his own experience, but also detailed drawings to help readers realize their backcountry dreams.

It is unlikely that I will undertake much in the way of actual construction. But I am studying this book for its virtually encyclopaedic reference to types of cabins (Adirondack, Appalachian-style, log cabin kits, and more) as well as for good pointers on cabin siting. There's a treasure trove of material about heat and light and their applications in, say, the cabin kitchen. Even if we end up purchasing something already built, I will be far better informed (and thus expect to make a better decision) because of the scope and detail of this book.

Fears touches on what one might call the "social factors" of a getaway, as well. He describes what ensued when an essentially extroverted couple built something that provided the solitude they thought they craved and tackles straight on the liability issues that your hospitality may raise. And he goes beyond the nuts and bolts of construction to explain the importance of providing truly comfortable sleeping facilities.

I'll be looking at pretty pictures, too, but this little book with its black and white drawings and photos has become my cabin bible. Already I feel far more confident in my search for a getaway that I will be able to use, enjoy, and maintain. Never have I even considered a wish to grant more than five stars to any book. Because of its utility, fine organization, complete index, and readability on a subject matter I expected to confuse and befuddle me, I would happily grant it a mountain-skyful of stars.

        4 out of 5 stars Wide-Ranging and Well-Done.......2002-09-20

Unlike many of the newer books on building cabins, Fears states that anything over 1000 square feet in NOT a cabin. Readers looking for a general introduction to cabin building and living will find a wealth of information here. Fears is serious about what it takes to build and live in a small cabin. Most of the plans he reviews are for cabins from about 400 to 800 feet square. So, this is a real cabin book! Yuppies wanting to build custom homes in the woods will be put off when Fears describes (in depth) the building and proper use of an outhouse.
Fears discusses land choices, cabin building styles and materials, lighting, heating, options for water supplies, and kitchens. He seriously suggests not having electricity at all.
Toward the end of the book you will also find suggestions for building a rifle range, concerns over making your cabin secure, how to safely use a chain saw, and other helpful information.
At times Fears comes across like the "good-old-boy" he is. At other times he shows a deep knowledge of Aldo Leopold. It seems to me a rare and wonderful combination.
This book does NOT tell you how to actually construct a cabin. But for those of us beginning the process of seriously considering what kind of cabin we want, where to put it, and the basics of design, we find a well-written and genuinely useful book. Highly Recommended.

                      Book Description

From the creators of the original, bestselling children’s “issue” series, First Time Books®, comes a practical, down-to-earth guide to handling the very toughest parenting challenges.

Combining humor with the trademark homespun common sensibility that parents have come to depend upon from Stan and Jan Berenstain, each chapter of The Bear Essentials covers a specific tricky or worrisome passage of child-rearing.

For example, “No Two Alike” is about promoting individuality and self-esteem. “Weighing in on Obesity” deals with one of the most serious and rapidly emerging problems among the under 12 set. “Expletives Deleted—Please!” helps parents cope with foul language.
