Book Description

Treasure Chests traces the fascinating evolution of the boxes that have held the things that people valued most over the centuries. For thousands of years, chests have gone to war, to sea, journeyed with us across entire continents, and held and protected the possessions we hold most dear in our very own homes. From tool chests to toy chests, this book celebrates how extraordinary a box can be when it is meant to hold something we treasure. More than 100 chests from museums and private collections are featured, including over 250 color photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Great job!.......2007-05-29

I ordered this book from Russia. Relying on the lack of such books in our country, it is really valuable material. I'm glad i have it now and strongly advise you to purchase one. Best wishes!

5 out of 5 stars Sumptuous.......2006-08-08

I really enjoy this book. I am a woodworker / furniture maker and I read a lot of this style of book. The author does a fantastic job of illustrating each box and providing a bit of background on each box. The photos are all in color and very well composed.

The boxes range from a tea box recovered from the harbor at the Boston Tea Party to HO Studley's over-the-top tool chest to a standard GI foot locker.

The book is well-organized. There is little wood working technique described so if you are looking for a how-to book, this ain't the book for you. However, the author briefly describes uncommon techniques such as lapstrake construction (common in shipbuilding but almost unheard of in furniture making).

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and wide-ranging.......2004-04-19

A lovely book. The title may mislead - it's really what I would think of as large-scale boxes, carcass work. Old and new designs, from blanket chests to campaign chests. Usually enough photos of each piece to give a real sense of it, too. (I hate feeling like I've missed seeing 2/3 of what's there.)

5 out of 5 stars Both a beautiful and an educational book.......2002-10-06

This book is truly enjoyable to read.

It is a beautiful "coffee table" book -- after all, who isn't intrigued by antique treasure chests and other historical boxes.

I really enjoyed the history behind the various boxes types, and learned a lot about the benefits of the different construction types.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great beginners book. :).......2006-07-13

I just started card weaving this past spring. I searched for books on the subject and came across this one from a recommendation from several web sites. I am so glad that it has been reprinted. This is a great book for us beginners learning card weaving. The pictures are clear, she touches on some great techniques, and her patterns are really pretty. She walks you through several techniques, and touches on some others that are available. The directions are clear and to the point. The pictures are great. She even has examples at the end of the book of some things that you can do with the bands once they are woven. I would definitely recommend this book for beginner to intermediate level weavers.

5 out of 5 stars Many Bags.......2006-03-29

When I bought this book I wanted to learn to card weave, it has helped me so much that I've woven strips and made them into tote bags and have sold two already. WOW!! So I rate this book the best.

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners or advanced weavers...........2004-09-21

Easy to read, easy to understand, clear description - technical and basic. All you need to get started. I strongly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Tablet Weaving.......2002-09-18

This is a great first book for the tablet weaver. It covers the basics in enough detail to start weaving right away. It follows a logical progression to more advanced methods and gives some simple to follow patterns.

Pros: clearly written, short and to the point. Good examples. Gets you going quickly.
Cons: Forgets to mention details like tangles (they do happen!), not enough info on pattern making, uses a simple threading pattern that may confuse some weavers as they research patterns (the book uses arrows to indicate threading, instead of the usual S or Z).

All in all, a great book for the beginning weaver. Not much there for the more advanced weaver.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and well-designed book........2000-12-15

This book has one of the best explanations of how to do card weaving that I have seen. Crockett has you weaving within an hour or so after reading the directions. My only reservation concerns her instructions for winding the warp for the first project. I would recommend that beginners start with a short warp to minimize tangling. After the first project you advance to other methods, and later in the book there is a way to warp which does away with the problem of tangling. Overall, she gives clear explanations of both the mechanics of card-weaving and pattern design. The book is more than a just a how-to manual. It has sections on the history of this ancient art, and explores the contemporary use of this medium by fiber artists. It's the sort of book that, if you see it in a bookstore, you want to buy it. There are a lot of gorgeous color photogaphs so it's really beautiful to look at. The overall flavor of the book design and photos is contemporary. I suppose that in 30 years it might seem dated, in the same way that textile books from the 70s often seem dated to us now. However, some of those books still attract the eye, and I predict that in a few decades this one will probably do the same.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great general card crafting book.......2006-03-27

This is a very good book for beginners probably advanced card makers alike. It covers all the basics on the tools. The projects are beautiful. It covers embellishments like eyelets, stamping, dry embossing, paper piercing, stenciling, weaving, quilling and paper casting. The book doesn't provide templates for all the projects. They have one for the braded spine but not the braided medallion. They use metal templates for the piercing but they could have easily provided a paper template. It is chalked full of wonderful ideas and how to instructions. You'll find yourself wanting to buy a lot of different supplies some are not available locally here but the book provides a resource list in the back.

As a Scadian i am costantly searching for peroid and DOCUMENTED patterns. Well this is the MECA of all of them. Documentation and pattern in one. I am very glad i got this book and will recomend it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Historical Recreation.......2000-10-26

The first hundred pages of this ~300 page book deal with the history of tabletwoven bands: who made them and why, where they were used, design sources, historical tablets and looms, and some technical information about the bands. The next ~170 pages lists historical bands. Each listing gives culture, time-period, materials, and any other information available. Many (most?) also have a pattern for the design. The last couple dozen pages are the note and bibliography. I found this to be an excellent source of both general and specific information about historical tablet-woven bands. It is also obviously aimed at those who wish to recreate for themselves something documentably from times long ago.

5 out of 5 stars Great beginners book on Card Weaving.......2006-07-13

This was the first book that I bought on Card Weaving. I just started weaving this past spring, and found everything I needed to get started from this book. Most of the patterns are really neat and weave well. There are 50 different patterns to choose from. The pictures are black and white since this book was printed in the 70's and it is spiral bound. A nice little reference book of patterns. :)

5 out of 5 stars Card weaving by Russell Groff.......2000-09-05

An excellent though small book on card or tablet weaving. Ideal for the beginner. Has a number of nice patterns with full directions. Useful for small groups as well. Gives some background information on card weaving and invites the weaver to further exploration. Well worth the small price. I have used it repeatledly along with more advanced works. Explains the necessity of threading reversals to maintain the proper twist and where to do the reversing.

                Book Description

Following the success of Xtreme Houses, this new book steps inside today's coolest dwelling spaces to see how advances in technology and architectural creativity are transforming not just where we live but how we live.

Xtreme Houses shows how architects, artists, collectives, and individuals push the envelope of what's innovative, eco-friendly, and economical for today's residences. What's next? Xtreme Interiors, and it's every bit as design-savvy and provocative as its predecessor.

Houses that bring the outdoors in. Walls that roll, zip, and bend. "Smart" wallpaper. Portable kitchen/bathroom combinations. "Calming" closets and programmable, safe rooms. Each of these concepts and more are examined in the same inventive and eye-popping format that made Xtreme Houses such a visual treat. This selection of forty actual and imagined interiors shows how the most creative designers, individuals and collectives in the world are reimagining our living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchens. The authors study the impact of computers and sensor technologies; investigate accessories borrowed from industrial and public spaces; rethink assumptions about a house's footprint; and trace design shifts from rational to radical, square to open, box to blob. The result is a revolutionary "lifestyle" guide that will practically jump into the hands of anyone wondering what's next in the world of interior design.

"Setting limits means defining the rules and regulations, the boundaries, that enable us to make decisions and act responsibly. Setting limits means drawing a line and then holding to that line. Limits provide structure--a framework--that guides and directs us in our daily living. "For parents, setting limits provides a means of maintaining control--you over yourselves, you over your children, and, ultimately, your children over their own lives. It does not mean imposing unreasonable restrictions, tethering creative or exploratory impulses, or bending personalities in contrary ways. Instead, what setting limits should do is provide parents with tools so they can skillfully guide their children--direct their children's energies to appropriate paths so they can fulfill their own destinies in a responsible way." -- From the introduction to How to Set Limits For every parent who's ever asked him- or herself "Who's in charge here?pediatrician Elizabeth Vinton provides advice and explanation. As responsible parents we are charged with guiding our children toward appropriate and responsible behavior beginning from infancy. Dr. Vinton takes us through the stages of child development and identifies and explains the most common behavioral issues at each point. From there, she shares helpful anecdotes and effective techniques for helping children understand their boundaries and live and act within them. From the toddler who is testing to see how much he can get away with to the teen who is, frankly, doing the same, How to Set Limits helps parents define and implement safe and appropriate "rules of the road." Elizabeth C. Vinton, M.D., is a board-certified pediatrician who completed her training at Childrens Hospital in Boston. She is the mother of three grown children.

I am so glad I've read this book while my 2 kids are still toddlers and I'll kep on reviewing it as my kids grow. Dr. Vinzon's guidlines on how to set limits and boundaries are very practical, caring, relevant and helpful. As I read through the different chapters on stages of child development I gained more control and confidence on my parenting ability. The book also addressed several issues important to parenting today like schedules, work, school, carpools, etc.

                          2 out of 5 stars Very unprofessional.......2006-06-18

I picked up this book on tape because I thought it would help me deal with some intense situations at work. I was wrong. The whole discussion was centered on Mrs. Arapakis' former boyfriends whom she described as losers and alternative lifestyle friends. She is obviously an unhappy woman and tries to push her victim perspective on other people. The idea of this book is basically "Think what's good for you and act accordingly". You do not have to listen through 4 hours of low level dating stories and pseudo scientific ramblings on relativity theory (I have PhD in physics and Mrs Arapakis' discussion of something she clearly does not understand really annoyed me). To summarize: do not waste your time listening to these tapes.

                          5 out of 5 stars I loved this set.......2006-04-05

I have owned this set of tapes for years and have listened to them many times. They've been enormously helpful and I refer to them often when I need help deciding how to handle a particular situation. Friends I've shared them with have found them worthwhile also, and I recommend them to anyone wanting to learn more about boundaries and assertiveness.

1 out of 5 stars Poor style, narration, content...........2003-09-04

One of the lousiest "inspirational" cassete(s) I have ever heard. Maria's style of delivery is untrained and highly irritating. The content and her personality appears such that she wants to preach more individuality rather than fuse her theory with the idea of mutual co-existance - where you give and take. The fact early on in the book, whereby she reveals that she is divorced, further makes her an unlikely candidate to speak on such a topic.
Thank goodness - this was her last audiobook.
