Book Description

Collectors everywhere know that cookie jars, both old and new, are among the hottest items sought after today and are bringing top dollar at antique shops, flea markets, and on eBay. With this in mind and due to the tremendous success of their three-volume series, Collectors Encyclopedia of Cookie Jars, Fred and Joyce Roerig were prompted to produce The Ultimate Collectors Encyclopedia of Cookie Jars. This book is an overview of their first three volumes, now out of print, with exciting new finds and additions. As age does not determine collectibility, some current jars have been added. This information enhances that of the tried and true jars of old. More than 1,200 photographs are included in this deluxe volume. Companies featured include Brayton Laguna, Brush-McCoy, Disney, Metlox, Shawnee, Treasure Craft, McCoy, Twin Winton, and many more. Informative text, current values, color photographs, and a handy index make this a great buy for cookie jar collectors everywhere.

3 out of 5 stars Didn't help me much.......2007-03-21

I only wanted the book to identify and price an old cookie jar I have, so I really can't give much of a review, but I was dissapointed that the book didn't have more info (only the price) on my cookie jar.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Cookie Jarrin'.......2007-01-06

The "Ultimate Collector's Encyclopedia of Cookie Jars" by the publishers of the old Cookie Jarrin' Newsletter, Fred & Joyce Roerig, I found a pure pleasure to peruse for weeks. It displays, in some of the finest photography of all the cookie jar books, many of the cookie jar classics. Along with smile fetching standbys (ABC Coffee Pot, McCoy Cookie Cabin, Twin Winton Sheriff Bear, etc.) are a feast of the best jars from the best producers.
From American Bisque are the "Flashers", Little Audrey, Herman & Katnip, Baby Heuy, along with Umbrella Kids, Davy Crockett ((both) and Mohawk Indian (Little Mo). Brayton's Goose Woman, Maid and Ring Master are there. There's a picture of the old Brush Pottery Building along with their rarest including: Hillbilly Frog, Little Red Riding Hood, Hobby Horse and Puppy Police. On to California Originals there's their fun standards (Scarecrow, Little Red Riding Hood, Rabbit on a Stump, etc.) to their greats such as Snow White, Pinocchio(s), Bambi and the full color Woody Woodpecker. The section on McCoy is always fun with the Roerigs and this one does not disappoint. It begins with a full page Tony Veller and goes on to charm us with Two Kittens in Low Basket, Multicolored Leprechaun, Frosted Christmas Tree, Hillbilly Bear, Cookie Tug, Drum Majorette, two varieties of the Train Engine with Smoke, and a smorgasbord of their most popular jars. Again with Metlox there's the best of their regulars and a good mix of their "hard to find" jars including Ferdinand Calf, Flamingo, Mammy Scrub Woman, and Little Red Riding Hood. The Twin Winton chapter displays the entire Collector's Series, Shaggy Dog, and a good selection of their standbys. Conspicuously absent is any description of the Twin Winton Company. There's actually more dialogue on Don Winton in the Hirsh section than there is under Twin Winton. Treasure Craft's section focuses on their U.S.A. made jars with the exception of three jars made in Mexico. Even so, most of my Treasure Craft favorites are included.
Among others there fun sections on Dorrane of California, Abingdon, L.A. Pottery, Cardinal, Maurice of California, Hull (including thier impossibly rare Little Boy Blue), Maddux, Roseville, Helen Hutula, RRP, Sierra Vista, NAC, Regal China and Shawnee. Among current producers/importers there's Clay Art, Vandor, Enesco, Fitz & Floyd (although their Table of Contents says Fritz & Floyd), and Lefton. Surprisingly missing here are Vandor and Warner Brothers. The "Unknown/Miscellaneous" section is only 2 pages long. Also absent are any of the studio producers (J.D. James, Corl's Kilns, The New Rose Collection, Happy Memories, Austin Curtis, Star Jars, McMe, etc.).
To cover what's missing in the book would require several more pages. But the selection of cookie jars is what it is; the Roerig's opinion of what are the ultimate cookie jars and I enjoyed every page. There are updated prices that are as good as I've seen. Overall the jars covered are done so well that it's truly agonizing that the great producers are gone (McCoy, ABC, Twin Winton, Metlox, and on and on).
I give the book my highest rating within the scope of what it strove to achieve. The jars included and the jars left out are a study in what the Roerigs are about. Always an interesting journey.

4 out of 5 stars Cookie Jar Collector Guide.......2006-11-15

Great book for the cookie jar collector. The book will help you place a value when getting ready to purchase a cookie jar for your collection.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2006-01-22

This fourth book by the author is very disappointing. Is a re-hash of the older books with no new jars featured. The newer manufacturers are completely ignored. The jars featured in this book have already been featured in the other 3 books. Price values seem low and anemic.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Beginning Painters.......2003-05-08

This is indeed a wonderful book. Several sections are not about decorative painting specifically, but about painting in general. These sections are clearly laid out with pictures and lists of equipment needed. They were absolutely perfect for my fiancee and myself - we just bought our first home and have a lot of work to do! This book helped us learn how to sand walls, prime, remove wallpaper, and finally, paint. There's plenty in here for decorative painting too, but if you're just starting out and need a great reference, buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars A practical guide for inexpensive & creative painting soluti.......2002-06-21

The Home Depot has done it again-- provided homeowners with a practical guide for inexpensive and creative solutions for our painting needs! Reminding us that 80% of project time is in the preparation, the book is chock full of tips such as safety, tool selection and organization, and the basics of painting a surface.

The book is comprised of six main sections, plus safety and paint basics, which more than covers the questions you might have as a beginning or experienced painter. Choosing colors, tools and materials, preparing to paint, room painting basics, decorative painting techniques, and cleaning up are discussed at length, making this a comprehensive resource for your painting success.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Beginners Painting Book.......2003-10-28

Priscilla Hauser although a very talented painter with many years of experience, is still able to put herself in the position of the beginner. Each technique or preparation is fully explained in easy to understand terms. The basis for folk art painting or tole painting is mastering different paint strokes to enable the painter to achieve the desired results quickly and effeciently, and these strokes are demonstrated and explained fully. The author also includes photos of what an inaccurate stroke would look like.
The best part is the patterns and step by step instructions that will excite the beginner and entice them into trying the world of painting!!
This book is an excellent reference and teaching guide that even the most timid of beginners could feel confident they would achieve a measure of success immediately!!! Of course as with all things, the individuals style of painting will change and develop as they practice their skills, but when they look back they will always prize this book that guided them so well!!

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book!.......2006-08-12

I can't say enough about the quality of the pictures in this book. Startling and brilliant color. Nice writeups about the inns and haciendas. For anyone traveling to Mexico and looking for unique and historical places to stay, this would be a great book to read before the trip. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars I wanna move to Mexico!.......2004-01-13

You can almost feel the colours and shapes, taste the food and smell the flowers in this lavishly illustrated book on Mexican Haciendas and Hotels. I can see why allot of the people that started these Inns sold everything they had and moved to Mexico to start a new life. This book will be an inspiration to architects and would also make a great coffee table book. Be careful to check the binding when you get it. The glue on mine all fell off in chunks after the first read!

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictoral essay of historic Mexican inns and hotels.......2003-04-12

This book is good, maybe even great, but still can't compare to Melba Levick and Masako Takahashi's AWESOME "Mexicolor". Masako's other book, "Mexican Tiles" comes close, and still edges out "Mexicasa" a little bit as well, so when all is said and done I think I just have to chalk it up to Masako's EVIDENT love and appreciation for the unfathomable beauty of things Mexican. Melba Levick seems to me to see things more from the outside looking in, and without so much PASSION, kind of like a more disinterested spectator than a participant, but that could just be my opinion.

That said, this book is is REALLY NICE. I DO really like it and I highly recommend it- especially if you already own and really liked "Mexicolor" and "Mexican Tiles". Or if you aren't so much into artesanias and Mexican interior design, but are more of an armchair traveler or are interested in actual historic hotels and haciendas.

5 out of 5 stars Give your coffee table a treat.......2002-06-21

What Gina Hyams and Melba Levick have created here is a wonderful compilation of photos of 21 of Mexico's most spectacular and beautiful inns and bed & breakfast places.
Melba Levick must have had a ball taking these shots. There's hardly a picture that isn't beautiful in its own right - and there must be at least 300 of them. For this observer, the Mexican talent for blending and matching and mixing colors is the highlight of page after page. We see gardens and patios and pool areas and bedroom and dining areas and a host of living spaces where the eye is simply enchanted by the way the owners of these homes have decorated their various spaces. My own personal favorite is, of all things, a bathroom wall composed of talavera tiles where almost no two tiles on the wall match each other.
All the houses are fully described by Gina Hyams and in most cases she gives us anecdotes and stories about how the various places came about. Thus, for instance, in Hacienda Katanchel in the Yucatan,we read that the present owners discovered the place in 1996. It had been abandoned for 35 years and originally dated back to the 17th century. So what they acquired were 740 acres of dense jungle in which were buried many crumbling buildings with trees growing through walls and ceilings. They gradually cleared the mess away and started building and renovating in a blend of Mexican, Mayan and Spanish styles. And you should see the place now.
On a less ambitious scale, we read about Mesón Sacristia de la Compañia in Puebla. This began as a family-run antique store which the owners turned into a restaurant and then an inn. It has one extra little twist for people who stay there - everything in the place is for sale. The owners are continually having to replace dishes and furniture.
And so the stories go... Pick up a copy and give your coffee table a treat.

With the surge in popularity of hacienda restoration throughout Mexico, the time is ripe for the release of The New Hacienda in paperback. Travel behind the scenes with authors Karen Witynski and Joe P. Carr as they open the doors to Mexico's remote country estates and reveal innovative interiors, artifacts, and antiques that echo the hacienda's original architectural splendor. The New Hacienda looks at the ways in which designers and architects have integrated the visual culture of the hacienda and blended Mexican elements in new homes on both sides of the border. From ancient stone walls and arcaded portals to cobbled courtyards and grand salons, hacienda style comes alive with a spirited mix of once-forgotten objects and contemporary furniture.

      Book Description

"Never in our country has an architectural study of the haciendas been made; never before was there a typological study of all the spaces. Now, with the work of Nierman and Vallejo, we are able to return to the daily life of the hacienda as it was: the equipment, the carriage, the daily awakening, the humid night, and the sleeplessness."

—from the Foreword by Elena Poniatowska, winner of the 2001 Premio Alfaguara de Novela

The Mexican hacienda was a work place, a residence, a place of leisure and of religion—in short, a closed and self-sufficient rural world in which landowners and workers engaged in agricultural and livestock production. Constructed and modified from the sixteenth until the beginning of the twentieth centuries, they are today some of Mexico's architectural treasures. The hacienda's layout and buildings, though derived from earlier Spanish forms, constitute a uniquely Mexican vernacular architecture that deserves to be widely known and celebrated.

The Hacienda in Mexico is the first detailed architectural study of these rural communities. In this beautifully illustrated book, Daniel Nierman and Ernesto Vallejo present color and black-and-white photographs, site plans, building plans, and elevations to document all aspects of the hacienda—the compound, big house, chapel, spaces for production, materials and construction methods, and architectural details. In the accompanying text, they discuss each of these elements, as well as the hacienda's historical development and the ways in which its productive activities shaped its architecture.

To produce this work, the authors traveled extensively in the states of Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, and San Luis Potosí, photographing and drawing haciendas, interviewing their owners and state and federal authorities, and researching in hacienda archives. This in-depth treatment of the hacienda clearly identifies the architectural elements that make it unique, while adding a new chapter to architectural history and to the history of New Spain.

1 out of 5 stars Complete waste of money and time.......2004-06-29

This book is one of the all time worst books on architecture I have ever seen. With so many gorgeous books on Mexican, Spanish and Spanish Colonial Revival available, pass on this one. Though the book was printed in 2003, most photos are in black in white, poorly focused and amateurishly shot. I felt this was someone's badly done college thesis.

This book is good but, makes to many assumptions about ethnicity Severino's parents that he no proof of. It also takes much from Chavez's "But Time and Chance" much better book.

                Book Description

This classic history of the Mexican hacienda from the colonial period through the nineteenth century has been reissued in a silver anniversary edition complete with a substantive new introduction and foreword. Eric Van Young explores 150 years of Mexico's economic and rural development, a period when one of history's great empires was trying to extract more resources from its most important colony, and when an arguably capitalist economy was both expanding and taking deeper root. The author explains the development of a regional agrarian system, centered on the landed estates of late colonial Mexico, the central economic and social institution of an overwhelmingly rural society. By highlighting the way haciendas worked and changed over time, this indispensable study illuminates Mexico's economic and social history, the movement for independence, and the origins of the Mexican Revolution.

                  Book Description

What the plantation has been to the history and literature of the American South, the hacienda has been to Mexico and the American Southwest. In Remembering the Hacienda, Vincent Pérez makes the case that the hacienda offers the emblem of an "antebellum," agrarian social order that predates the United States.

It is the site in which the Mexican American community's "heroic," genteel forebears lived in dignity and pride, and it is the heritage from which they were cast out as "orphans," both in mother Mexico by the Revolution and in the American Southwest when the wars of 1836 and 1846-48 and capitalist land grabs dispossessed the Mexican hacendados. The hacienda, Pérez argues, had its own orphans, too: Indians, mestizos, women, and peons.

To trace the importance of the hacienda and its heroes and orphans in Mexican American culture, Pérez examines five novels and autobiographies: Jovita González and Eve Raleigh's Caballero: A Historical Novel (written in the 1930s and 1940s and later published by Texas A&M University Press), María Maparo Ruiz de Burton's The Squatter and the Don (1885), Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo's Historical and Personal Memoirs Relating to Alta, California (1874), Leo Carrillo's The California I Love (1961), and Francisco Róbles Pérez's immigrant autobiography "Memorias." The last work is Pérez's own grandfather's life narrative.

Photographer and author Eric Blau does the greatest service to all members of the adoption triad. With only simple introductions, Blau allows the adoptees, birthparents and adoptive parents the forum to tell their stories, relay their feelings, and share their worlds. The b&w photos are as telling as the text; some are particularly haunting yet poignant. Of particular note is the inclusion of several birthfather tales, usually absent from similiar volumes. It is an even-handed look into the good and bad of adoption, and allows the reader to make up his or her own mind without preaching any agenda (ditto the forward by Annette Baran). The only book I've come across that is perhaps suitable for non-triad members to read in the hopes of grasping what the rest of us have dealt with.

5 out of 5 stars A Window Into the World of Adoption.......1998-09-28

Eric Blau has done a superb job in introducing his readers to the often heart-breaking world of relinquishment, search and reunion. Touching insights are given into the lives of birthmothers and adoptees alike: the pain that some birthmothers still feel years after relinquishment is palpable; the isolation and shame that many felt while living in a time when being an unwed mother was a disgrace; the lack of support from family and friends; and the lies they were told about how easily they would be able to get on with their lives. Blau balances these stories with those of other birthmothers who are not so emotionally attached -- who feel that they have made the right decision and have moved on with their lives, and never looked back. Through Blau's deftly handled interviews the reader gains fascinating insights into the lives of adoptees, some of whom never knew they were adopted until adulthood; others who struggle with mixed race adoptions, and finally, those who search but will likely never find. Blau compliments the writing with black and white photographs, some of which are often stark and revealing. This is an excellent book, particularly good for sharing with others who have no insights to adoption and who have expressed an interest to learn more, but not to "study" the subject. As a reunited birthfather, I highly recommend it.
