1 out of 5 stars Guide to Mint Errors.......2007-08-23

I have never received this item yet even though it was ordered 7/23/07,it is not here yet.

3 out of 5 stars For the serious error coin collector..........2006-02-19

If you are into error coins big time, this book is for you. The book has hundreds of different errors, saying how they were made and a general price. It is like a encyclepedia: many different general entries, not going to specific on any one type of error. If you are a begginner to numismatics I would not reccommend this. Instead you should go for something like the Redbook. However, if error coins are your expertise, this is a must buy.

4 out of 5 stars 4 Stars but only because of its explication of rating system.......2003-07-13

The review below lodges some valid and important complaints. To wit, this book really is not a price guide as such as the 'guidance' is so broad as to be meaningless. Also, it is quite difficult to look up specific varieties such as the one you may be holding in your grimy little paw, and it doesn't give enough up to date information on the populations of various errors. Having said that, it is one of those I believe any nonprofessional coin collector ... coin scout should have for the following reasons: Alan Herbert, the author does give examples of the broad panoply of mint errors that are out there, with description, level of rarity and, usually, a photgraph for visual reference. More importantly, the book includes a complete description of the rating system and all of the nomenclature surrounding the rating and identifying of various errors. This information alone makes this book worthy of purchase. There is other information here too, such as a simple, lucid and photographically enhanced description of the entire minting process that will definitely help you to get your head around the world of error coins. To be sure, this book is deeply flawed and on that basis should probably draw only three stars, but I've looked and there just isn't that much literature on error coins out there for the casual coin collector. So, if you want to fill out your knowledge of error coins but aren't a hardcore error hound, go ahead and get this book. You won't be sorry, I'm sure (possibly a little disappointed though).

2 out of 5 stars There are better books on the subject.......2003-04-06

I didn't care for this book for a few reasons. First, this really isn't a price book. Sure it gives very general prices but nothing really pinned down. Second, this book is very hard to just look up a specific coin. The book is not very well aranged. This would be a good book if you just wanted to know the different varieties and how they were made. So if that's what you want then that's what you will get. As far as a price guide forget it doesn't tell me much about the value of a coin, especially with no specific year of coin or denomination.

5 out of 5 stars Lionel Train Operating Accessories.......2006-07-28

This is a great book if you are interested in Lionel train operating accessories. It describes most of the popular accessories and how to repair and service them. Great color pictures and even a price guide for each accessory. I have read this book from cover to cover and still refer to it quite often.

The only thing missing is advice on whether or not to upgrade an accessory to TMCC control for better performance.

      Book Description

From 1900 through the late-1950s, Lionel went from a wooden cheese box on wheels to expensive toy trains that flew off shelves at the height of the Great Depression to one of the worlds most recognizable brand names. In the 1960s, the company found itself in a fight for its life; only a buyout from General Mills would save the name from relegation to the dust heap of time. More than 80 modern color photographs help break Lionels "classic" rags-to-riches-to-rags period into five distinct eras, and a fascinating history examines the design and marketing of the companys most significantand dubiousproducts, placing them in the context of contemporary competition, real-life railroads, and world affairs.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Picture Book for Those in Need of Toy Train Nostalgia.......2000-11-25

This book is for everyone who always wanted a Lionel set, and never got one. The photographs accurately capture the marketing appeal of the sets and take you back to when you were eight years old and a Lionel train set was what you wanted for Christmas. The book commemorates 100 years of Lionel trains.

For those who know Lionel as a company and as a product well, this volume will probably prove to be disappointing. It is an "overview of the company's development and the way its products reflect the eras in which they were produced." Now, there's nothing wrong with that, but those who know Lionel well already have that perspective. So if you are an expert, I suggest that you avoid this book.

The strength of of this book lies in the photographs by Bill Milne. He has done a fine job of capturing the child's eye view of the cars and accessories. You can almost feel the rug pressing against your cheek as you remember lying sideways to get a closer look at ground level of someone else's new set.

Many of the pieces I had not seen before, especially from the 70s and on. If I had a place to put a set, I'd almost be tempted to make a belated start.

I was pretty familiar with Lionel over the last 50 years, so it was the early years that added to my knowledge. The founder, Joshua Lionel Cohen (later changed to Cowen), was interesting to me. He had a good technical background for toy trains, having been educated at Cooper Union and partially completing degree work in engineering at Columbia. His first job was for Acme Electric Light Company, which made many small electric appliances. He developed a way to ignite magnesium more evenly, and used that to found his own company to make fuses for the military. This led to a light for illuminating plants, a fan, and finally a battery-powered train. The rest is history.

The text comes across like something out of a fan magazine more than as a legitimate history. As an "authorized" version, undoubtedly the people at Lionel had some influence. I graded the book down one star for lack of insight into what all of this history means.

Think about how toys create aspirations and lives. What toys created what aspirations in you? Did an erector set cause you to take engineering courses? Did a microscope help establish a career in biology? If you had a toy train, how did that influence you?

What gifts should you give your children and grandchildren this holiday season to make for the best aspirations in their lives for the years ahead?

2 out of 5 stars Lowbrow puff piece does Lionel no Justice.......2000-10-22

This "licensed" Lionel book has been corporately washed and shoved out the door. The photography is stylish, but hardly informative. Lionel buffs want the real story of Lionel's rise and fall, rise and fall with real people behind the pictures. For a Lionel fan, this book is a big disappointment. A better book just came out entitled "Lionel: America's Favorite Toy Trains" by MBI Publishers. It is everything this book isn't - and cheaper.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate guide to Lionel.......2000-08-16

This is the best book I have ever read about Lionel trains. It is complete with pictures, history, and popularity. This is a must for all train collectors young and old. I'm a model train expert and I learned some things I didn't even know from this book! My hat is off to this auther because he did such a wonderul job.

5 out of 5 stars Lionel, a good legacy but not the quality.......2000-07-11

I thought that this is an excellent book about the standard train company of the world called Lionel. I thought the book gave a good prospective of the company, but unbenonst to all, Lionel is not quality. If you want high quality railroading, you should look at a company called Mike's Train House and I think they should make a book about them. Overall, I would like to say, Happy 100th Birthday Lionel!

5 out of 5 stars A "must" for all dedicated Lionel fans and train set buffs........2000-06-04

Since 1901, when Joshua Lionel Cowen launched his company by creating a small number of electrified toy trolleys for department store window displays, Lionel has been the leader in toy electric trains. Lionel's success is based on excellent engineering, durable construction, numerous accessories, and great play value. This colorful volume illustrates the history of Lionel electric toy trains. See how Lionel stayed alive during the Depression when they teamed with Disney and marketed electric Mickey Mouse handcars, and learn of Lionel's greatest years in the 1950s and 1960s. Lionel's resurgence in the 1990s was just in time for the company's 100th anniversary celebration in 2000.

                    Book Description

During her time as an art student in New York City, Mary Keithan never imagined that one day she would drive the state of Michigan's labyrinthine back roads in search of architectural subjects for her photographs. But, in 1990, shortly after acquiring an 8" x 10" view camera, she began just such an odyssey. In the process she captured on film and preserved images of the rural landscape's most endangered visual treasures, its aging, historic barns.

Many of her "subjects" are in poor condition; many no longer stand. And while we might expect a photographic series on aging barns to be a sad chronicle of America's rural decline, instead Keithan gives us a visual story of endurance and perseverance, of a way of life that in our modern times continues to thrive.

What Keithan has captured with her camera and presented in Michigan's Heritage Barns is enriched with her own narrative, often including interesting histories from the barn owners themselves. Photographs from most of Michigan's eighty counties are included to create a collection that celebrates Michigan's rural heritage as no other does."

                      Book Description

Originally there were approximately 200,000 barns built in Iowa. Now it is estimated that only 60,000 barns remain, with another 1,000 or more barns disappearing from Iowa's landscape annually. This book preserves in print Eastern Iowa's historic barns built from 1839 to 1955 with over 250 photographs from the author's research, the first ever Amana Colonies barn tour, the Johnson County Historical Society barn tour, and the Iowa Barn Foundation's annual barn tour. Eight Iowa counties and twenty rural cities are covered. Former president Hoover lived as a youth five miles from one of the featured octagonal barns when it was built in 1883. This barn's aesthetic beauty is so inspiring that people from other countries come to visit this barn each year to see the unusual bell shaped roof, a suspended staircase, a railway car, and laminated interior ribs. It may be the only barn built with a bell shaped roof and is thought to be the oldest surviving barn built of its kind in the U. S.

                        Book Description

In this revised edition of an award-winning work, Jerry Apps provides an informative and moving account of Wisconsin's most hand-working structures -- its barns. Symbols of optimism, pride, and practicality, barns are as diverse as the people who built them. Here Apps describes the exquisite craftmanship with which Finns, Norweigans, Germans and other immigrant groups built their pioneer barns. We learn, too, how round and octagonal barns developed, and why cupolas and lightning rods were used, and how some of Wisconsin's barns became covered with colorful murals and billboards. Allen Strang's meticulous pencil sketches and eight stunning watercolors illustrate the text. Unfortunately, our barns are fast disappearing, victims of urban development and the trend toward large-scale farming. In a new chapter, Apps describes the nationwide movement to save these historic structures, and tells us how some owners have converted barns to innovative new uses. In so doing, he offers both inspiration and practical advice to anyone who believes these magnificent buildings should continue to stand proudly in the Wisconsin landscape.

                          Book Description

Of the 226 round barns that are known to have existed in Indiana, more than 100 have vanished from the landscape, thus depriving the state of beautiful landmarks and testimonials to the ingenuity of turn-of-the-century agriculture and architecture. The author's admiration for the round barn's grace and his concern for its survival is evident on every page as he traces its history from George Washington's 1793 sixteen-sided barn to the development of the "Ideal Circular Barn" and associated patents to the demise of the structures in the second half of the twentieth century. By combing through family letters, agricultural journals of the time, advertisements, and other often-forgotten documents, Hanou offers fascinating glimpses of the individual farmers, builders, and architects who championed the innovative construction techniques. Through imagination and hard work, these men created their own market for round barns; in the year of peak construction, fifteen barns were built.

I found myself reading this book through in two sittings. If you like history, personal stories, diaries or the like, you will enjoy this book. I compare it to Jimmy Carter's An Hour Before Daylight in that it gives a picture of rural life in the early part of the century. It is human, candid, and lean in its verbage. It captures all of the emotions and leaves you with mental images that will last a lifetime. Try it.

                          5 out of 5 stars A window into a world gone by.......1999-12-07

In an era of urban sprawl and corporate farming, this is a gentle reminder of a world of small towns and kind people. Jackie's experiences growing up on the dairy farm range from laugh-out-loud humorous to tears rolling. "The Round Barn" illustrates what family values truly were before the demogogues got hold of the term: integrity, caring and principles put before profit. The Dougans were--and are--intelligent, hard-working people who have a tremendous joy in living.

The stories are brief enough to read aloud---and deep enough to read again and again with pleasure.

                          Book Description

Michael Harker drove past old barns on gravel roads and blacktop highways for years. He generally dismissed them as obsolete outbuildings until November 1993, when he felt compelled to photograph a windmill in Clutier, Iowa. This single photograph launched him on a seven-and-a-half-year mission to document Iowa's barns and all they represent. The result is Harker's Barns: Visions of an American Icon.

Each of the seventy-five black-and-white images featured in Harker's Barns beautifully and heartbreakingly captures the glory and ultimate demise of one of rural America's most enduring icons. From square to round, wood to brick, Dutch to Swedish, occupied or abandoned, the barns documented in this stunning collection are a testament to a passing way of life that was once the lifeblood of Iowa and the Midwest.

Complementing Harker's photographs are vignettes by poet and writer Jim Heynen. Both whimsical and endearing, each vignette treats barns as organic and intelligent entities, reflecting the living history that can be found inside each rural structure.

Iowa's barns are disappearing and with them a way of life; Harker's Barns brilliantly documents their heritage for future generations. As Jim Heynen says, “A good photograph can maintain an old barn through blizzards and hail storms and tornadoes. It is the best support beam and wood preservative an old barn can have.”

Visit his website at http://www.harkerphotography.com to learn more about this outstanding artist who is preserving Iowa's history on film.

                          Harker states:

The images showcased here represent my philosophy as a citizen of Iowa and as a photographer. I am a documentary photographer whose main goal is to record Iowa's historically significant architecture from the 1800's before it disappears forever. My subjects are barns, one-room schools, courthouses, rural churches, banks, and houses from rural areas and small towns.

I work in large format black and white utilizing the scientific technique of Ansel Adams' Zone System to create images of outstanding technical quality. I draw my artistic abilities from my more than thirty year career as a professional photographer.

I intend to leave a lasting legacy in the annals of American Photography through my dedication to the people of Iowa - to visually preserve the early citizens' quality craftsmanship when they built these "cathedrals" of wood and stone.

My images are little time machines carrying forward to future generations of Iowans the dedication of their forbearers. People born a century from now will be able to look back in time to what was once glorious and real.

                          5 out of 5 stars About Love.......2005-01-14

Thank whatever gods you worship for university presses. They undertake the publication of books, not because they expect them to be profitable, but because the books need to be published. "Harker's Barns" is such a book. It will never make a profit. It would probably have been too expensive for its creators to have self-published. And yet it deserves to be published, not just for what it tells us about barns or a vanishing agrarian society or even about the ways of photography, but for what it tells us about love.

The book consists of seventy-five black and white pictures of barns and other farm buildings. Those who care about black and white photography will admire the edge between peeling paint and dry wood and the texture of sun and wind bleached wood. They will also admire the sense of time hidden in some of the pictures. I am thinking of a photograph of a barn, obviously taken at the smallest possible f/stop, to get the depth of field needed to have the barn etched sharply from front to rear. And yet as a result of the long exposure necessary with this small opening, the weeds in front of the barn, blown about by a passing wind, are ablur.

This is a book about love, make no mistake. It is about the love of the photographer for his subject and what it represents in his mind, and it is about the death of a loved one. And it's about the love that many of the people who helped in the project must have felt for the subject, and perhaps for the vision of the photographer. And of course, it is about the love, perhaps unspoken and unacknowledged, of the farmer for his farm.

The photographer laments the gradual loss of the small family farm and expresses his hope that this book can somehow preserve it. And yet the photographer must know that this is a fatal economic disease from which there is no hope of recovery. The small Iowa farm that the author loves makes little economic sense in a modern society that requires efficiency in everything it consumes. Who of us will pay twice as much for a tomato from a merchant who tells us that such a price will support the farmer who continues to till the land in a way that makes no sense in an industrial society, but does so because that farmer wants to follow his heart rather than his reason?

Normally the text that accompanies a book of photographs is an unnecessary garnish, designed to fill space. But Jim Heynen is a poet, and his words are short and pithy and help us to look at the subject from a slightly different viewpoint. For example, he says "Windows in a round barn follow the light of the seasons, thus giving a sense of agreement with nature."

Even if you don't like black and white photography, even if you don't like farms, the very idea of this book may appeal to you. For it is clearly a work of love, and perhaps the reader can learn to love like the photographer.

                              Book Description

Originally there were approximately 200,000 barns built in Iowa. Now it is estimated that only 60,000 barns remain, with another 1,000 or more barns disappearing from Iowa's landscape annually. This book preserves in print Eastern Iowa's historic barns built from 1839 to 1955 with over 175 photographs from the author's research, the first ever Amana Colonies barn tour, the Johnson County Historical Society barn tour, and the Iowa Barn Foundation's annual barn tour. Eight Iowa counties and 20 rural cities are covered. Former president Hoover was living as a youth five miles from one of the featured octagonal barns when it was built in 1883. This barn's aesthetic beauty is so inspiring that people from other countries come to visit this barn each year to see the unusual bell shaped roof, a suspended staircase, a railway car, and laminated interior ribs. It may be the only barn built with a bell shaped roof and is thought to be the oldest surviving barn built of it's kind in the U. S.

On a mild summer day in 1946, on the outskirts of Oklahoma City, a small group of people that included C.H. Williams, R. O. Corvin, and Oral Roberts, eyed some property for sale. The men were searching for a possible site for a new Bible school for the Pentecostal Holiness Church. The "Abe Hale Nightclub," an old barn and a few buildings, sat on over seven acres might have seemed an unlikely choice, but men with vision saw it had possibilities.... "Southwestern Bible College" was being born.

For the first time the story of the pre-statehood roots, the 1946 birth, development, challenges, and rebirth of Oklahoma's first Pentecostal junior college, one of the states largest at one time, is shared in "One Nightclub and A Mule Barn." The history of the school known over the years as "Southwestern Bible College," "Oklahoma City Southwestern College," "Southwestern College of Christian Ministries," and now "Southwestern Christian University" is one profoundly intermingled with Oklahoma history. Pentecostalism in Oklahoma is also virtually unexplored territory among histories. "One Nightclub...." provide a fascinating glimpse into the nature and character of a large segment of Oklahomans who share ties to the Holiness-Pentecostal tradition. "One Nightclub and a Mule Barn" provides an introduction to not only a school, but to an overlooked, yet rich aspect of Oklahoma history.

                                  Book Description

This commemorative edition of Amish Acres: Stamps of Approval is being published to coincide with The United States Postal Service First Day of Issue Ceremony for the “Amish Quilts” commemorative stamps to be held at noon, August 9, 2001 on the Joseph Stein Stage of the Round Barn Theatre at Amish Acres in Nappanee, Indiana. The theatre is the National Home of “Plain and Fancy,” the 1955 Broadway musical about Amish life and love, celebrating its 15th season at the historic farm. The stamps celebrate the contributions of Amish quilters over the last two centuries across America to their distinctive and practical art form.

Frank Ramirez and Richard Pletcher have collaborated to create this history of Amish Acres and the development of the Round Barn Theatre into one of the nation's busiest regional musical theatres. The book is divided into two sections. The first covers the history of the acquisition, preservation and restoration of the Stahly-Nissley-Kuhns farmstead into Amish Acres heritage resort. It has subsequently become the only Old-Order Amish farm listed on The National Register of Historic Places. The second section, “This Wooden O,” follows Ramirez's insight into each theatrical production that has taken the stage of the Round Barn Theatre over the last decade and a half. He explores each musical for its message as it fits within the Golden Era of musical theatre in America, then critiques the individual merits of each show's artistic, performance and technical team. Together they create patterns of human life, love and interaction among those of different backgrounds enriching our capacity to appreciate and tolerate others who differ from our own cultural backgrounds.

                                  Book Description

In recent years, social and economic pressures have combined to affect the traditional role of the homemaker. With much emphasis being placed on the world of "work" in contrast to "home life," many people struggle today to fulfill several functions at once. This increasingly busy and hectic climate has led many to look down on the work of the home. We are led to ask, Is there a valued place for the homemaker in modern life?

Taking a spiritual perspective inspired by the work of Rudolf Steiner, Veronika van Duin shows that the task of homemaking is at the center of our social existence. She tells us that its role is nothing less than a "social art," and that homemaking needs to be formulated consciously if we are to develop happy and contented families and homes.

Without claiming that there is a blueprint for creating the perfect homemaker, the author offers principles and observations based on a study of the seven "life processes" and how they affect us. In this invaluable book, van Duin addresses the significance of rhythm, relationships, an artistic environment, caring, self-development, and much more.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest guidebook for creating or recreating a family.......2002-05-20

Veronica Van Duin has done us all a huge favor by drawing on deep and timeless principles to forge a handbook to use in making family life work today. I am a single dad with grown children and have found out, they never really leave the nest (thank God) but they do come back home with some deeply challenging problems for "us" to confront. "Homemaking As A Social Art" helped me come to realize that "family" is not something you learn about, it is an ongoing growth process that you are going to be involved in all of your life and Veronika has distilled her own experiences and the wisdom of Rudolph Steiner down into a really usable book that makes you glow with the opportunity inherent in family living. Before "Homemaking As A Social Art" all I had to draw on was some Christian literature (Family Home Evenings) from the Mormons ( Great stuff) and Stephen Covey's book
The 7 Habits Of Highly Successful Families (A great book by the way)
This book is even better. Get it and you and your family will be happier and for the rest of your life you will be discover new ways to add meaning and deep enjoyment to your lives.
