Excellent Resource of Mexican Marks.......2007-05-24
Over 200 pages of Mexican silver marks. The pictures are clear of the actual mark on the silver. Has a brief history under the makers name when available. Would buy this book again.
Mexican Silver trademark reference.......2007-03-27
A great reference book for collectors of Mexican silver jewelry. There are lots of pictures of marks as well as a long list of initials of Mexican designers including artists signatures with two initials and three initials. The Mexican eagle stamp is noted in all of its various forms through the decades. There is also a reference of the designers in the various Eagle numbered shops.

Customer Reviews:
A Definitive Reference.......2007-01-10
Mexican Silver by Penny Morrill and Carole Berk is the definitive reference for anyone interested in 20th Century Mexican silver jewelry. Not only is it brimming with information on the jewelry, the background biographies of the working life of Spratling, Davis, Aguilar, Margot and many other giants of this industry are well written and a darn good read. After spending several hours reading the book I the expertise that I would have gained had I taken a 3 credit college course. There is a general price guide in the back of the book which, from my experience, accurate and reasonable. The only observation I might make is that there is not as much information on silver hollow ware and decorative pieces. For myself, my main interest is in the jewelry so I was not disappointed.
The Amazon price can't be beat. Before I bought the book through Amazon I had not seen it for less than $60, its list price. I paid less than $40 on Amazon!
A Wonderful Book that Doesn't Pertain to Me.......2007-01-10
You have to admire the research that went into this sumptuous volume, also the photos. As a (very) amateur collector, this work, I'm sorry to say, doesn't pertain much to me. Still, I'm happy to have it on my shelf.
Great overview for collectors.......2007-01-09
I recommend this book to anyone interested in Mexican Silver jewelry of the 1930's - 50's. It gives a wonderful overview of the history of this unique craft. It also provides knowledgeable information about which pieces and designers are most collectible, with high-quality photos of many of the best pieces. I started collecting Mexican Silver jewelry 10 years ago out of sentiment, because my mother and grandmother used to wear it. Learning the history of this type of jewelry has made me even more fond of the genre, and has given me the knowledge to collect more valuable pieces.
Mexican Silver.......2007-01-09
I was disapointed in the book personally.. It's just a great big heavy picture book. (eye candy)
I believe a collector would appreciate a non vague value guides as well which this book does not have. The value guides are exp: Margot necklaces - 600.00-2500.00+ huh? What is my blue enamel circle necklace worth?? 600.00 or 2500.00?!
This is a book about a select few mexican silver makers and their life stories. (few pages on unknowns)
Perhaps a good book to have on a coffee table but that is not what I needed.
I had hoped this book would help to identify mexican marks I have that can't be found on the internet, all of the silversmiths listed in the book can be and are well documented online. There are personal accounts as well but for the most part this is a coffee table book.
It is very expensive so I hope I can help anyone looking for exact value guides from buying the wrong book.
If you like to collect Mexican jewelry you probably should eventually get this book, but as far as a good value guide line for Mexican non-well known Jewelry go else where.
A superb guide for Mexican silver collectors .......2006-09-21
An antique dealer turned me on to this book and I finally bought it this past summer at an antique expo here in Portland, Oregon. The price tag is a bit spendy, but the information within, along with the masterful photogrpahy, makes this book well worth the money. Any serious collector of Mexican silver needs to have this book in their library. The authors give readers an inside look at the artists that have made mid-century to contemporary silversmithing in Taxco what it is today.
Book Description
William Spratling revolutionized silver jewelry design in Mexico. Arriving in Taxco in 1929, by 1940 he had over 100 silversmiths producing his enormously popular silver creations. Important figures of the North American literary and art establishment, among them John dos Passos, William Faulkner, and Georgia O'Keeffe, purchased his designs and sang his praises. Out of Spratling's workshop emerged many of Mexico's finest silver designers, including Héctor Aguilar, Antonio Castillo and his brothers Jorge and Justo, Salvador Terán, and Antonio Pineda. Today their striking jewelry and hollowware in silver-often set with precious stones and pre-Columbian artifacts-are prized collectibles.
This book tells the story of the legendary designer and of seven decades of the silversmith's art in Mexico. With its elegant photographs and an invaluable appendix of hallmarks, this volume-which accompanies a traveling exhibition that will draw new attention to Spratling's silver designs-will appeal to collectors, dealers, scholars, and everyone who enjoys beautiful jewelry.

Small Book - Hefty Returns.......2005-02-28
This is a somewhat simple book with simple black and white illustrations, but it's chock full of them!
As a vintage jewelry dealer at Atlanta Vintage Jewelry dot com, I needed information about the marks of silver jewelry that came from Mexico. Other vintage costume jewelry collecting books that I owned didn't often refer to Mexican silver other than the highly collectible ones such as Taxco and Spratling.
I didn't necessarily care about the history of a person or about the area of Mexico a piece of silver came from. What I wanted, and got with the purchase of this book, is the initials and numbers used in the hundreds of examples that are found in silver jewelry. These explanations can then become knowledge for use when I do find a piece that bears a certain mark.
It's a 'one-of-a-kind' sort of book and I'm happy to have it on my bookshelf with the other vintage jewelry books I've collected. One can never have enough reference books!

Book Description
This book emphasizes that the Spanish empire remained the third most important European state in terms of fiscal income and naval power, and first in size of territorial empire, particularly because of its colonies in Spanish America. The Spanish crown was involved in four wars with Great Britain and two wars with France during the decades 1760-1810. Colonial Mexico financed most of these wars by remitting silver in the form of taxes and loans. The expenditures of the imperial wars were so great that they eventually caused the bankruptcy of both the Spanish American colonies and of the monarchy itself.

Great for the Beginner.......2003-04-07
This book covers the basics very well, and actually has some more advanced topics too. The content is well written and the pictures are excellent. It covers everything from start to finish. I looked for a book specific to plastic aircraft models, but this book does the trick and applies to the basics for all plastic models.
Great for starters.......2000-03-27
Can't beat the price. Covers the basics on just about every aspect of automotive modeling. I recently started building again and this book has definitely helped. Starts off with tools you'll need to start building. Information on detailing engines and chassis(s),interior(s), exteriors, tires, etc. Discusses painting techniques for detailing and exterior finishes. I highly recommend this book if you are starting in the hobby or even if you've been building for years. I guarantee you will learn a new trick.

A Basic Overview.......2000-05-25
This book offers a general overview of the physical and emotional issues frequently faced by teenagers and their families. The chapters are brief and easy to read, and the contents are really quite comprehensive. The tone is professional and neutral with regards to moral or religious issues as well as specific parenting styles. I don't think that this book would offer any useful insight to a family deep in conflict over a particular issue, but for parents or teens who want a preview of the terrain ahead, this could be a useful reference. Of the several that I read, this one was the best.
