Hand Tools: Their Ways and Workings
ASIN: 1561587125
Release Date: 2003-09-15 |
Amazon.com
Woodworkers beware: Garrett Hack has put together a completely irresistible book, beautifully illustrated with color photographs, drawings, diagrams, and everything you would ever want or need to know about the handplane, the ultimate woodworker's tool. Hack covers the history of planes back to Roman times, and explains how to tune and sharpen a handplane, how to use the many different varieties properly, and how to purchase the right kind of plane. In a world where most woodwork is done with machine tools and mechanized wood-shaping devices, The Handplane Book is an ode to the wonders of the beautiful work done with a tool many modern woodworkers have probably forgotten.
Book Description
Handplanes evoke the romance of an earlier era, when they performed countless woodworking tasks from preparing stock to shaping moldings. In The Handplane Book, aficionado Garrett Hack reveals the rich heritage of this classic tool with a treasure trove of information and history, including detailed guidance on how to buy a plane, tune it up, and use it. Lavishly illustrated with 175 photos and 152 illustrations, Hack engagingly traces the tool's lineage from Roman times to the present, with emphasis on the golden age of handplanes from the late 19th and the early 20th centuries.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource for any hand plane user.......2007-09-05
I've been using hand planes for basic tasks for years but never got the performance I felt they were capable of. This book has given me the information I needed to really tune all my planes. It is a pleasure to run a plane down a board and get a perfect shaving thin enough to see through!
I'm now using planes for things other than fitting a drawer or easing an edge. And my shop is often a quieter place because of it!
Not for a Person Who Wants to Build Planes.......2007-06-03
Wow everybody loved this book!!?? I guess it depends on what you are looking for. I want to build my own planes. This book is not useful for that. The only illustrations, which are sparse, are pictures of planes. So if you love tools and want to read about planes this is probably as great as everybody says, but if you actually want to build a plane this book will not be any help. I did find the discussion of Stanley and other old planes very useful though when going to the flea markets to look for old hand tools. Thats why I gave it a 4. If you want to build a plane I would give it a 2.
Best "Plane" Book there is.......2007-05-13
This book is essential for a serious woodworker. I learned more from this book than any other book on this topic. The tune up tips are very helpful and the explanations are easy to understand. The photographs and illustrations are highly useful and really aid a reader. Because of this book I went out and bought some planes that ought to help me accomplish what I need to do better.
Handplane book review.......2007-05-13
I am new to woodworking and find this book a great reference that I continue to refer to and learn from. It is filled with excellent color photo graphs that make it a coffee table style book (albiet smaller and softcover), but it also contains excellent drawings depicting techniques and supporting jigs that are useful. It is broad in scope addressing the history and development of planes, chapters on a broad array of handplanes, and even a chapter on buying old handplanes.
Plane Fundamentals.......2007-05-10
Garret's book covers the theory and operation of most wooden and metal planes. It's a good reference with a lot of good information. You might want to consider it as a starting point or foundation of your plane library.
To round out your library, I would recommend buying books dedicated to sharpening or to just wooden planes. These are not covered in enough detail in the book. Also, buy other books on the operation of the planes. Hack has his way of doing things - be sure to read other books for alternative methods.

Customer Reviews:
This book is good for learning to use ingredents form your kitchen for you facials........2006-08-21
this book tought me to use ingreadients from my kitchen for my facial and other cool things. I am glad that I found this book because it gave me some really great ideas for gifts. This book gets a 5!
Definitely for girls and young people, but good book.......2006-08-11
****
This book is definitely for young teens. It is very easy to follow. I bought it as someone very unfamiliar with crafts, but I am middle-aged. It definitely was not suitable for me, as I have no need for hair-clips, "Her Royal Highness Tiara"s, and nifty lunch boxes. Still, it is a great book for girls and it was fun to read.
The description did specify that it was written for ages 9-12, and this would be the perfect reader for this book. So if you are young, or know someone who is, get it. If you are a beginning crafter who knows nothing, and thought you might get some ideas, go for it if you enjoy locker decorations and sleepover suitcases. Otherwise your needs might be better served with a different book.
I gave this book 4 stars because it is a good book...for young girls...I am exploring beginning crafting and just made an inappropriate purchase. Recommended for young teens.
****
This actually deserves 6 stars!.......2006-06-01
Crafting is a great way to teach our daughters (and sons!) how to start something and finish it. The Crafty Diva books give guidelines for fantastic crafts that moms/step-moms can do with their daughters/sons. It also teaches girls to choose their own individual style, as opposed to looking like a cookie cutter. Directions are clear, and can easily be modified to add one's own sass.
tween-focused, but good for adults, too!.......2005-11-11
Ok -- I may be twice as old as the typical reader of this book, but I love the peppermint face mist directions -- I'm planning on making some with my friends' kids for the holidays!
If you've ever wondered how to keep a group of younger girls entertained on a rainy afternoon, the Crafty Diva's Lifestyle Makeover is a great jumping-off point for activity ideas. I teach kids to knit (in person and with my Knitgrrl books): believe me, they'd rather be doing fun things like this than watching endless TV reruns. Creativity is cool!
Like her earlier Crafty Diva book, the illustrations are adorable, the directions are clear, and the tips are great. I like her emphasis on money-saving ideas...you don't have to be a millionaire to be a crafty girl!
a totally cool book for girls! .......2005-10-24
i bought this book and the other crafty diva book for my little sister for her birthday and we LOVE both of them! the projects are so different and easy to make and super colorful. we already have made a list of projects we are going to make next week at my siuster's slumber party. i like how the writing in it is so funny and relatable. i just barely found kathy's crafty chica web site and podcast and am so proud to find she is a latina like me! this book is so creative and happy, i encourage all girls to go buy it so you can make the projects with your friends!!!! i can hardly wait to go buy kathy's other books, i hope they are as good as these ones are!

Wonderfully Written! Extremely Helpful! Great Guide!.......2002-07-19
Vern wrote an easy to follow, educational guide for those who are having a custom home designed. It's written in laymans terms and it offers questions even those in the industry may not think to ask. Beautiful renderings and photos add to this spectacular book. From a woman who has grown up in a family of architecture, I highly recommend this book.

Havens and Hideaways: Cozy Cabins and Rustic Retreats
ASIN: 0811844676 |
Book Description
Haven brings together unique homes in which the dream of retreat has been made a reality. Each of these twenty hideaways offers something for every taste from a rustic barn to a desert oasis, from a modest tent cabin to an architecturally significant modern masterpiece. Throughout, the focus remains on communion with our natural surroundings and the peace it brings, on sanctuary from the noise and frantic pace of every day, on the sounds of nature and the gentle art of doing nothing. Each restful and rejuvenating interior illustrates how such relaxing spaces can be created in the home, with details such as an intricate stonework fireplace, a panoramic view through a wall of picture windows, or a tropical poolside cabana. Beautiful color photographs make Haven an escape unto itself as well as a rich source of ideas and inspiration for making dreams of simplicity and retreat come true.

Cutting Edge Home Design.......2007-04-04
Create a getaway that's environmentally friendly and completely you. Learn how to live with nature instead of clambering all over it.
Beautiful Book, Environmentally Friendly Getaways and a Cool Tree House!.......2007-02-11
I got this book as a gift from my wishlist here at Amazon. I was thrilled with it, not only for the fact that it's a really nice book, pretty cover, very heavy pages & beautiful photography. I wanted it mainly for decorating purposes and I did get alot of unique decorating idea's from it, but it is much more than a decorating book.. 20 different homes, vacation retreats and wilderness camps are featured.. Each one displays a gorgeous getaway spot that has been created to blend in with it's surroundings while still offering the luxury and comfort of home. Many have optioned environmentally conscious methods and offer ideas for using recycled or repurposed materials in their construction. Most of the beautiful, comfortable, romantic, scenic getaways are created to co-habitate with nature without causing further harm to it..
This is a book on the cutting edge of home design. Many of the homes and getaways shown are designed for nature enthusiasts and with popular past times in mind, such as camping, hiking, bird watching & the beach. Many different styles are represented as well, from spare minamalism to the eccentric whimsy as illustrated in an adult treehouse paradise that looks rustic on the outside but is a luxurious showplace on the inside.
Really wonderful book. An absolute gem. I don't think the description here on amazon properly conveys how useful this book is for creating homes or getaways that are environmentally friendly. I highly recommend this it to anyone concerned with the environment, even if not in the market for building a new home, there are a lot of great ideas for conservation in remodeling and just everyday living. It's also just a beautifully crafted book and makes a great conversation piece as a coffee table book. I have had sitting out for months and many friends have enjoyed it, commenting on it's beauty & unique-ness.
Haven.......2006-06-29
The book arrived in pristine order and very quickly. I am very happy with it.

Book Description
Catalogue documenting the presentation of eleven architects' concepts for future housing. Responding to a series of questions posed by guest curator Daniel Friedman, ten architects or architectural firms created drawings, statements and models. A national jury added an eleventh entry. Some of the houses presented were actual, livable dwellings, while most of the models were theoretical; including a series of cigar boxes halved by glass panes by New York architects Karen Bausman and Alison Berger, a "foldable" home by Romm & Pearsall of Atlanta, a water mill castle by Marco Frascari and Claudio Sgarbi of Italy and Philadelphia, a "super information highway" house by Hariri & Hariri of New York, and a deconstructed home by Eric Owen Moss of southern California. Other architects include Leslie Gill and Adi Shamir Zion of New York and San Francisco, Merill Elam of Atlanta, Kevin Kennon and Peter Moore of New York, Pam Kinzie and Les Taylor of San Francisco, Koning & Eizenberg of Santa Monica, John C. Senhauser of Cincinnati, and Joseph Valerio of Chicago. In-depth essays by Danial Friedman, AIA, and Nadir A. Lahiji, Ph.D. Introduction by Center Directore Elaine A. King. Checklist, profiles of architects, and acknowledgments.

How do great houses come to be? Here are the stories of 10 extraordinary homes and their creation. From London architect Sir John Soane's postneoclassical 18th-century abode--and his awareness of light as an element of design--to writer Curzio Malaparte's spectacular-yet-austere 1930s villa, perched atop a rocky spur in Capri, Architects' Dream Houses ably illustrates the influences that led to the emergence of modernism. Included are such notable homes as William Morris and Philip Webb's Red House, Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Hill House, Sir Edwin Lutyen's Mallet House, Victor Horta's house and studio, Antionio Gaudi's Guell Palace, Emmanuel Pontremoli's Greek villa for Theodore Reinach, and the interiors of writer Pierre Loti's home. This is an exquisitely photographed and splendidly written book.

Joshua Harris follows up his bestselling I Kissed Dating Goodbye with Boy Meets Girl, the story of how he met and married his wife, Shannon. Where Harris's first book encouraged readers to throw off modern ideas of romantic fixation, Boy Meets Girl goes to the next level and urges single Christian men and women to pursue courtship, and ultimately marriage, thoughtfully and prayerfully. Knowing that many readers will balk at the idea of premeditated courtship, Harris insists that dating should not be emotional recreation but rather a careful decision rooted in obedience to God. While the anecdotes used to reveal true-to-life scenarios about dating pitfalls are somewhat elementary (and geared to those in their 20s), Harris succeeds in hammering home the point that obedience to God's word, selfless love, community, purity, and satisfaction in God are the most important aspect of any relationship. The last section of the book is particularly practical, discussing forgiveness of past sexual sin, questions to ask before tying the knot, and how an understanding of our sinful nature can lead to conflict resolution. For Harris's mere twentysomething years of life experience, his maturity and devotion to God are sincere evidence that he has indeed practiced what he has preached, resulting in a passionate relationship with the love of his life. --Jill Heatherly

Customer Reviews:
Healthy, biblical, sensible, christian suggestions for pure relationships.......2007-09-03
This book is worth your time spent reading it. If you are a Christian and you wonder just how to have a pure relationship, in a world where there seem to be few, I recommend it.
This is an easy reader that runs smoothly, well written and well laid out. This is a young brother speaking to his fellow men and women about his own testimony of relationships, and what he has learned. He doesn't give a set of rules, but gives beautiful guidelines and counsels (and practical ones, more than only: 'Date Christians and don't have sex before marriage! Period!'). He is well aware that there is no 'one size - fit all' when it comes to relationships.
The red line that runs through it all is, that God is the creator of romance and longs for his children to experience it. That to live to the glory of God is to live for him, his way and reflecting him - even in our way of relationships.
Some might find faults with chapter 7 and find it to be a patriarchal, or narrow minded - but what I like about it is that he does call us men to stop being the wimps we have become in this age and be real men!
I found this a challenging book. When I read that "We glorify God in our relationships when we put our needs aside and base our decisions on what serves the interests of the other person" (Pg 36) - I was challenged! That might mean asking yourself, 'Is starting this relationship now what's best for her?' And that is a question passion many times does not allow to be asked. Therewithal this is a romantic book, the story in chapter 3 was wonderful, and a beautiful testimony of the rewards of thoughtful, selfless relationships. Chapter 10 'When your past comes knocking' is also precious and valuable for dealing with past errors in former relationships.
For us in Europe (or other places where the dating game is not played), this book is more practical then 'I kissed dating goodbye'. For who doesn't want the perfect relationship? Who says it is a myth and non-getter today? I think there is a reason for why most girls have fantasied about there wedding since they were small girls... for it is there inborn wish for a good relationship and marriage, and may it also be their fortune.

Say Hello to Courtship.......2007-03-28
As a young adult in my 20's, within marriageable age, this was a wonderful book. I think this was better than "I Kiss Dating Goodbye" that it addresses to people a bit older and the writing is much more mature in this one since Joshua Harris has acquired a bit more wisdom on this matter. Again, I do not agree with some things mentioned in this book (it could be a bit more conservative), but overall, a good book. I really like how it addresses what singles should be doing such as: wait on the will of God, do His work while you are single right now, prepare yourself for marriage by serving those in need.
I've recommended to many of my friends with marriage on their minds at the moment. Nothing was really new in that these have been addressed to me in the past, but it's a wonderful reminder.
Awwww, too cute!.......2007-03-17
My husband and I read this together while we were dating. It helps get your mind going in the right direction to have a wonderfully healthy courtship. Ironically, I finished reading "I kissed dating goodbye" just a week before I met my husband. So of course I recommend reading that one, too!
A bit disappointing.......2007-01-22
I was really enjoying this book and then I read the sad chapter about Shannon's past. It just broke my heart and made me cry. However, I felt more admiration for Joshua Harris, although I'll always think he kinda let himself down.
great book!.......2007-01-20
This book is incredibly well-written. My husband and I read it while dating and engaged and it brought out a lot of good things in our relationship that we may have struggled through blindly otherwise. I've passed it on to a few friends already and plan to continue to do so.
