Book Description
Our Fostoria, The Crystal for America series of books, by Milbra Long and Emily Seate has become the industry standard for Fostoria collectors. Now as the perfect companion, these authors have compiled the ultimate value guide to Fostoria, the first of its kind on the market, the first complete price listing of Fostoria glass. This user-friendly guide to all stemware, tableware, and ornamental glass is designed for both beginning and advanced collectors and dealers. Organized alphabetically, making a quick reference for finding any pattern or shape, the book includes for each pattern production dates, colors made, and all known decorations, in addition to helpful illustrations. The authors have also provided informative text discussing the ever-volatile pricing trends in the glassware trade. AUTHORBIO: Emily Seate has been a writer of fiction and poetry for most of her life. She is a philosopher, preferring long hours spent in thought to just about anything, except shopping for Fostoria glassware. She and her mother, Milbra Long, are co-authors of the book series: Fostoria: The Crystal For America, as well as the Fostoria Value Guide. AUTHORBIO: A retired teacher, Milbra Long has been a researcher for years, offering articles to many publications. She volunteered for the research committee of the Fostoria Glass Society of America, and served on the board of directors. She and daughter, Emily Seate, are co-authors of the book series: Fostoria: The Crystal For America, as well as the Fostoria Value Guide. REVIEW: This book is a must-have for Fostoria collectors. Not only is it a quick reference for the thousands of Fostoria patterns and etchings, but it is also a great companion to the authors' "Crystal For America" three-volume series.
Customer Reviews:
Average value, lacking measurements.......2007-06-28
Quiz: What is the size difference between a cookie, cracker, pickle, and a pretzel jar?
Don't know? This book won't help. Many of the listings lack physical measurements, cutting the value of the book in half. This is particularly crucial when looking at stemware and bowls. Unless you carry a measuring cup with you, the capacity in liquid ounces in some listings won't help either. Means you'll have to lug around the other books, defeating the purpose of having a separate Value Guide.
The book seems quite complete otherwise, and has clear pictures/drawings of most patterns so you can verify price tag accuracy. No substitute for a pattern identification book, since that is not the purpose of this book.
The Fostoria Value Guide.......2006-12-02
I found this book very confusing and difficult to use. There are very few colored pictures, and what there are, are not labelled. I would not recommend this book. There has to be a better Fostoria book than this. It also does not have everything that was made in a pattern. You would have a real hard time identifying many Fostoria patterns using this book.
It Just Gets Better and Better.......2003-11-12
There are those who impulsively and passionately buy books on antique and collectible glassware, those who systematically purchase such books for their usefulness, and those who wait for that rare wonderful book to add to their collection. Milbra and Emily, Mother and Daughter, have written a book for ALL of you. Grab your purse, your wallet, your checkbook, your credit card. We're going shopping!
Why this book, you ask. The shelves are full of reference books. True enough. There are bigger books, books that have more pictures, books that are hard bound and updated every year. You already have those books. Buying THIS book is like buying a piece of Fostoria- crystal, colorful, wonderful to touch, full of history, something from which you must tear your eyes, something you don't want to put down, something valuable.
Each of the 206 numbered pages has a treasure for you to find. No where will you find more information on the value of your Fostoria pieces. No where can you find references to the 4 previous books so lovingly and gorgeously produced by this team. With this book you have a way to access all 4 previous books in any way you choose.
From Acanthus, Etching 282 to York, Cutting 707 (almost A to Z), The Fostoria Value Guide is where you find what you are looking for. One hundred years of production by the greatest glass company this country will ever see. What are you waiting for? Need more information? Okay.
Worried that THE Guide is organized just by etchings or cuttings? Leave your worries behind you. Categories (alphabetically) are imbedded in the treasures, so if you want to look up "Jugs and Tankards", you'll find them after Jubilee and before Juliet. Got a collection of "Figurals"? Find them after Fifth Avenue and before Finger Bowls. Starting a collection of Centerpieces? You'll find an entry just before Century, which kindly redirects you to "Bowls, Centerpieces, and Console Bowls". Have an unnamed blank? Look under "Blank". Collecting an unnamed etch? Look under "Etch". It doesn't get any better than that.
Still not satisfied? Okay, you've got a beautiful pitcher, which your Aunt Wilma left you. She called it Meadow Flower, you're sure. But there is no listing. What to do? Meadow Rose is close, look there, is that it? Page 109 in THE Guide. You know she got it in 1937, when she was married. That's right, it was made then according to THE Guide. Not sure? THE Guide tells you to look closer in Stemware, page 87. Convinced? Now call your insurance man. That pitcher is worth a lot more than what your Aunt paid for it. How about $350.00 today?
Still need more? Hard to please or just a discriminating book shopper? How about 16 pages of photographs, advertising, and catalogue pages you haven't seen before. How about an alphabetical guide word at the top of each page, just like a dictionary, so you can move around quickly and easily through the pages? Milbra and Emily aim to please, and they've hit the bull's eye.
I know you're convinced now. You've seen plenty of other value guides- lifeless, cryptic, colorless, limp, incomplete, poorly bound, an after thought. Who needs them? With this choice you'll enjoy a beautiful, friendly book.
See you at the store. Or if they are sold out (likely), see you online. You won't go wrong. Have Milbra and Emily let you down thus far? Not even close. Love their books, love them, love Fostoria.
Another Invaluable Resource for Glass Collectors!.......2003-08-07
This beautiful new book is a worthy companion to the other 4 books in the Crystal for America series by Milbra Long and Emily Seate! It is artfully designed and cleverly organized, so you can quickly find updated values for any Fostoria glassware covered in the four preceding books. Colorful page borders and plenty of illustrations, many in color, make this book easy to use, despite all the numerical information it offers. There is even a section of new information on Fostoria tumblers! This book does not replace the other 4 books -- you need them for indepth information on pieces and patterns, but it is a masterful presentation of updated value information.
Perfect handy reference.......2003-08-05
This is the book I've been waiting for. It puts all the patterns into one book I can carry with me. Since it's in ABC order, patterns are easy to find, and there's picture of a piece or design to jog my memory with each pattern. Lot's of good data packed into one book, plus all the color makes it fun. A must have for Fostoria collectors!

Wonderful Reference Guide to Fostoria Glassware.......2002-10-03
Wonderful reference guide to Fostoria Glassware. I would have preferred more color pictures to get a clear image of the glassware. Some pages tend to be a little dark. I feel this book is more for the Experienced Fostoria Glassware Collector.
An essential guide for Fostoria Glassware collectors.......1999-06-30
A well researched volume loaded with useful information about this popular collectible. Much of the material was obtained directly from Fostoria archives and includes many illustrations from original company catalogues and brochures. All illustrations are clear in black and white. Products are listed by categories and run from bowls and candlesticks to dinnerware to vanity dresser items. Very comprehensive. A useful price guide is featured. Fostoria collectors will find this volume of value and will use it often.

Book Description
Any presentation of the Fostoria Glass Company would not be complete without the candlesticks, candy jars and boxes, the multitude of coasters, oil bottles, jugs, marmalades, and vases that were often used with patterns, either as part of the line or as accent pieces. Ease of use by the reader is facilitated through a Master Index which documents all four books in the series. With more than 160 colour photos, this volume is both useful and beautiful.

A Must Have for Glass Collectors and Sellers!.......2003-08-07
This well-written, beautifully designed book offers a wealth of information on Fostoria glassware! It is logically organized and has lots of illustrations from Fostoria catalogs, plus many color pictures. It has helped me score some real "finds" from sellers who don't recognize Fostoria! It is such a valuable reference that I am on my second copy, having worn out my first!
Gorgeous Fostoria is Everywhere-Now I can recognize it!.......2000-11-13
I had no idea that Fostoria Glass was so plentiful.
As a seller in an antique mall & on-line, I can kick myself that I have passed up so much Fostoria Glass. I have overlooked expensive cigarette holders that I thought were unusual candle holders, bowls with lids that are old cigarette holders, glass coasters, and much much more at auctions & estate sales that I could purchase for pennies on the dollar.
I always thought fostoria was either made with hobbs or very fancy glass. This is not so.
This comprehensive book will more than pay for itself. In the evenings, I will carefully study sections on Fostoria so I do not overlook it again.
If you collect or sell glass, You NEED this book!
Informative, comprehensive, invaluable collector guide........2000-06-04
Milba Long & Emily Seate's Fostoria does contain plenty of color, providing an identification and value guide for ornamental fostoria glass of all kinds. From jellies to coasters and lamps, this packs in all kinds of fostoria glass works.

I agree wholeheartedly with the other review of this book. However, I have faith that it one day will be valuable tool for me. For now, it sits on my shelf.
Not recommended for the novice glass collector.......1999-03-31
Unless you are familiar with the Fostoria line, this is not the book for you. As a collector who is just acquainting herself with glass, the arrival of this book is met with great disappointment.
Most pieces are unmarked, so a good reference to the patterns and color shades is valuable. Of the 240 pages, only 48 contain color pictures. The majority of the patterns are represented by black and white catalog clippings and silouette line drawings. Some patterns have no visual representation at all.
There is also a small section dedicated to reproductions with the warning that no value can be given to reproduced items. However, there are no tips on how to spot a reproduction.
Perhaps those already familiar with the patterns would find this a valuable tool, as the listings of pieces in each pattern appear to be complete and the patterns are sensibly listed in alphabetical order.

The Fostoria Value Guide
ASIN: 0891457267 |
Book Description
The Fostoria Glass Company, started in 1897, is one of the most famous names in glassware. Collectors everywhere search for this beautiful crystal, often choosing several favorite patterns. Ann Kerr has created an unbelievable reference for these collectors in a user-friendly, informative book which showcases Fostoria's delicate and quality glass. Volume II features detailed information on Fostoria's etched, carved, and cut designs; the lines most sought after by today's collectors. It is a companion volume to her first, published in 1994, which focused on the pressed, blown, and hand-molded shapes. This all-new book includes color photographs as well as line drawings and a host of catalog reprints to aid in identifying each piece of Fostoria glassware. This huge reference guide is very simple to use with each pattern listed in alphabetical order, and then by piece. Important facts such as histories, dates, colors, sizes, and pattern details are provided for over 475 patterns. Current values are given for each piece and all variations. An excellent reference and value guide for Fostoria collectors, this well-researched work will also become an essential book for all antiques and glass dealers nationwide. 1997 values. 5 X 11. AUTHORBIO: Ann Kerr was an avid Russel Wright collector and researchers of his works for many years. She was able to finish writing her third edition of the Collector's Encyclopedia of Russel Wright before she passed away in 2001. REVIEW: In only 168 pages, this book has made a successful collector out of me. It has numerous illustrations, all in color; an orderly method of describing types of buttons and their history; tips on cleaning and displaying them; and addresses of publications, suppliers, and clubs for collectors. Although it is crisply informative, the book also conveys the pleasant, upbeat personality of the writer. -Amazon.com

Not too bad...in combination with other books.......2000-04-03
Well, I went ahead and bought this book despite my reservations. I am not exactly sorry I did, as I find the information useful, but only in combination with other reference books. The line drawings of the designs are alright. The patterns are organized alphabetically, which is great if you know the name of the pattern you are looking for...I don't. However, I think that with time, it will be a valuable resource. Definately not for the novice collector.

Customer Reviews:
Best book on "hand quilting" for the beginner........2006-11-27
I've been researching books that teach hand quilting for quite a while and never found one that I felt satisfied with until I discovered this one. This is my favorite hand quilting guide for several reasons. First, the author presents three different methods of hand quilting: the rocking stitch (on a hoop or frame with shorter needles), lap quilting (with no hoop or frame and longer needles), and quilting done one stitch at a time ("stab stitching") which causes the least amount of stress on the wrist. All of these techniques are supported with excellent photos and written descriptions that are easy to understand and follow. Second, the author reviews various quilt battings that can be used in hand quilting and provides recommendations on how to "split" a batting to obtain the thinnest batting possible for ease of hand quilting. Third, the author provides a very intelligent framework for developing a quilting design strategy for your particular quilt, which begins with a high level overview of the "major" design decisions. After you pass these hurdles, everything else easily falls into place. An added bonus is a historical overview of stitching done on antique applique quilts and the rationale for design choices made by women in the 18th and 19th Centuries. I had been searching for a book that focuses on quilting designs for applique quilts so this was very greatly appreciated.
Fourth, the author also provides an excellent review of quilting frames and needles in addition to excellent guidance on how to prepare thread for hand quilting with the use of bees wax. Fifth, the author provides guidance for making your own feather designs for borders and includes templates in the book using a method that I have never seen before and inspired me to try. There is so much encouraging and supportive advice in this book. The author is a 6th generation quilter and has done extensive research on antique quilts and is a master hand quilter as well as an excellent writer and teacher. It is so very rare to get written instruction for a visual art that is this good for beginners. I know there are alot of other highly praised authors on this subject, but after exploring everything out there, I found this one to be the absolute best! Apparantly alot of other people seem to agree, more than 50,000 copies have sold since it first came out in print in 2003.
Kimball is a favorite.......2005-12-26
I don't keep every quilt book I buy, but this one is a keeper. If you're a hand quilter or want to be, you will benefit from this book. Ms Kimball is one of my favorite applique and quilting people. I always learn something new from her. This book is no exception.
Hand-quilting thrives!!.......2004-03-30
With hundreds of quilting books, I didn't need another one. But since Jeana Kimball's needles are my favorite, I took a chance. Wow!! How did she get so much information in 80 pages? She covers quilting through, around, and for applique, popular designs for the body of the quilt as well as the borders(both historical and modern), and tools. Every step is punctuated with a glossy color photo example of an actual hand-made masterpiece. And Jeana is classy, when she discusses needles, she doesn't even mention her own.
How much is there to say about Hand Quilting?.......2000-02-16
Just a couple of pages in this book are actually about the process of quilting itself. There is a long part about the history of quilts (quite good if you are interested in that), a gallery of quilts (beautifully quilted) and general instructions on materials and planning a quilt. The author also tries to explain how to make a quilting design fit the size of your own quilt but that is done very poorly. I have seen much better instructions in other books. The quilting part is okay but it is just a few pages. This is definitely not a book every quilter needs even if you prefer hand quilting to machine quilting.

Book Description
We all know that patchwork is pieces of fabric cut into various shapes and sewn together into patterns. During the first one hundred years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, many women and girls-and even a few men and boys-sewed patchwork. But how did patchwork- making start? Where did people get their ideas for the designs? And how were the patterns named?
This delightful, informative alphabet book, which uses the names of early American patchwork patterns for its letters, tries to answer these questions and many more. From Anvil, Buggy Wheel, and Churn Dash, to Letter X, Yankee Puzzle, and Zigzag, the straightforward, simple text of Ann Whitford Paul and the rich, earthy illustrations of Jeanette Winter show in colorful detail the fascinating stories of the people and events involved in the origins of this beautiful form of stitchery.

Making Connections.......2007-08-26
This is a great book to help children learn historical events as well as make meaningful connections to math and quilting. It would be fun to have them make a quilt of their own. The ABC format adds to the charm of the book
My third grade students thoroughly enjoyed the book!.......1998-08-23
As an elementary school teacher, I incorporate the whole language philosophy into my classroom. I spent an entire month linking the curriculum of my school district to Ms. Ann Whitford Paul's literature. My students learned about math, science, social studies and reading using "Quilts" as our theme. We created individual quilt squares to represent each of my 33 students and I lovingly sewed them together. Quality literature is at the core of my teaching. Eight Hands Round demonstrated such quality and brought joy to my classroom.

Give birth to a child and you give birth to a story. Stories of drama, humor, sweat, accomplishment, and, ultimately, of a joy. Each is unique, each worth the telling and hearing - especially for mothers-to-be, who are anxiously wondering about the outcome of their own birthing story.
A writer who believes in the power of positive storytelling, Ann-Marie Giglio conceived and edited Labor Day, a collection of 32 personal and affirmative accounts of labor and delivery. Written for pregnant women, for fathers, for all mothers who want to share and remember, Labor Day tells the story of Rebekah, born in a frenzy at home in Arizona; of Ryan, delivered three weeks early in a full breech position; of Lucas, whose natural birth was so uncommon in the Tennessee hospital where he was delivered that many of the staff came to watch; of Sage, born underwater in a special birthing tub to candlelight music. There are C-sections, successful battles with preeclampsia, births of twins, and several fathers' sides of story. Each tale is compellingly readable, the details ringing true, the emotions high, with facts that are practical, too. In addition, the book includes a birthing wish list, suggestions for taking those first photos, and space to write in your own story. There's also a ribbon marker.
Manuals and how-to's tell what to expect. Labor Day tells what actually happens, in the words of the people it's happened to.

Life is beautiful!.......2004-07-09
I just finished reading Labor Day, and as a mother of two children, it really touched my heart and brought back many precious moments in my own personal experience. Labor Day captures the magic of the maternal bond which is unlike any other. It is a great read for expectant mothers and a perfect gift, especially for first timers, who have much to look forward to as they enter the special club of motherhood. I plan to make it a standard baby gift in the future (It's also reasonably priced!). Ms. Giglio does an excellent job capturing the moment(s). Enjoy!
Terrible!.......2003-01-10
Lots of little stories from lots of different people. Nothing of value in the medical sense. No useful information for your experiences. This is a terrible book and not worth the money at all!
Wonderful, Inspiring.........2002-04-09
I loved this book. As someone who is trying to get pregnant, and will hopefully soon be going throught the labor process, I can not read enough "birth stories" This book has a collection of 35 stories, most of them written from the laboring mothers point of view, but some are written from the husbands point of view. I plan to buy this book for every baby shower I'm invited to for the rest of my life. Any woman who is expecting will love this book. And for only [price], it's a great deal.
Diversity.......2001-08-25
I loved this book. The varied birth experiences in this book made it interesting from cover to cover. I especially enjoyed the experience written by the husband in, "A Pushless Delivery". I laughed out-loud at the way he expressed himself. This husband should be a full-time writer. I am sending it to my sister who is a professor of nursing. I am sure she will enjoy sharing many of the stories with her college nursing students.
Helping to Prepare for My Baby's Labor Day.......2000-02-27
I am in my first pregnancy, and very overwhelmed by the thought of giving birth. I have heard so many horror stories! I needed something to give me a positive affirmation that I can do this! I found that "something" in this book. This book gives the personal and positive yet honest accounts of just about every delivery immaginable. The text is easy to read and very captivating. I would recommend this book to anyone - moms and dads to be, parents already, or health care workers!
