Good book for the first time aquarium owner.......2000-03-25
I found this a great book as a guide to solve problems with my tropical fish. It is easy to read and easy to understand. I love the pictures, they are very helpful. For the price this book should be a part of every persons' library who is serious about having tropical fish as a pet. Buy it, you'll love it.
Great troubleshooting guide for fish keepers.......1999-07-17
This book is very good for the freshwater fish keeper or the beginner / intermediate marine hobbyist. The book contains very easy to read and useful flow charts to analyze fish and tank problems. The text is also very good and useful. It gives treatments for many diseases (including color photographs), as well as advice on keeping a healthy tank. I enjoyed the funny artwork as well! A great reference. Advanced marine reef keepers may find the book a little basic.
Book Description
World cat expert Roger Tabor reveals how you can learn to really feel how your cat thinks and behaves. He explains behaviours such as hunting and mating, and also looks at behavioural problems and how to cure them. This book is a real insight into what makes a cat tick, and every owner will benefit from the consequent closer relationship with their feline companion.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive overview of feline behavior from UK biologist.......2004-06-28
U.K. biologist Roger Tabor's book is a cleverly illustrated and fairly comprehensive overview of feline behavior. Beautiful full-color photos are used very effectively throughout the text. However, his biologist's focus favors cats in their natural state. He sees the increasing trend towards confining cats in the U.S. and U.K. as a major contributor to behavior problems (p.120). While this may be true, many U.S. bird-lovers might dispute the British study he refers to that found outdoor cats were not threatening bird populations (p.135).
This book is not a primary cat care manual, or a collection of detailed case studies, but it is an excellent supplemental text for any cat owner who wants (and needs!) to understand their pet better. Though much of it is not of any immediate use to owners of neutered/spayed indoor cats, the entire text is full of fascinating detail and illustration of all aspects of feline behavior throughout the life-cycle. Tabor starts from biological descriptions of the feline class and works towards the behavorial specifics. The problem-solving section is only the last 20 pp. of the book, but it seems thorough enough to cover most common situations.
I gave this book the full 5 stars because it's very well done for what it offers. However, if you're primarily interested in spayed/neutered indoor cat behavioral issues, there are better books to advise you.

Possibly the Best Book on Creative Problem Solving.......2007-02-08
I've read many books of this type and this one is by far the most comprehensive. It is not just a laundry list of tools and techniques, it also provides a greater guidance on the best attitude and mental approach to make the book useful. The author himself says repeatedly, not just in humility but in acknowledgement that there may be better yet unidentified methods, to not just believe everything he says but to try out all the tools in real life, and to improve upon them as necessary. At times the book reads somewhat like a tedious manual, but this is completely counterbalanced and outweighed by the abundance of information and meaningful examples. This is a lifetime reference for anyone interested in making their life more interesting via applied creativity.
An excellent primer if you want to revv up & sharpen your problem solving skills...You can't go to the office without it!.......2006-10-29
Creative Problem Solver's Toolbox: A Complete Course in the Art of Creating Solutions to Problems of Any Kind
by Richard Fobes
Writing a creative problem solving book is pretty easy, but putting the ideas down & bringing them alive - in the form of workable tools - against a backdrop of real world problems, call for a versatile author with myriad pre-occupations. In this case, Richard Fobes fits the billing perfectly as he has worked as a writer, interactive multimedia software designer, systems analyst, computer programmer, inventor, electronics technician, hardware store clerk, & dance instructor. He has spent five years researching & writing this book.
Many of the author's early ideas have been published during the four years he wrote the Creative Problem Solving Tips column of the Focus newsletter from the American Creativity Association. [Readers can access the tips via the author's solutioncreative website.] That's how I got to know about Richard Fobes & his inspiring book.
A few things intrigued me when I first encountered the book during the early nineties:
1. A catchy subtitle, A complete Course in the Art of Creating Solutions to Problems of Any Kind;
2. A radial outline of the book at the end of the book (I wish all authors can follow his example!);
3. A portrait of a lady next to Einstein on the front cover. I didn't know her until I read about her: She was Hypatia, who invented a hydrometer which measures fluid density. She lived in Alexandria, Egypt, from 370 AD to 415 AD. The author has deliberately put up her portrait as a reminder that women also innovate! Bravo!
4. There are sixty five ingenious tools for solving problems in the book;
Upon reading it, I found it to be a very user-friendly book. There are a lot of examples & exercises in a variety of real world problem settings.
Personally, I have applied many of the tools in the book. At the time I had acquired it, I had just started my own strategy consulting business as well as my learning resource store. Being a novice entrepreneur, the book served in many ways as my problem solving advisor. In fact, the book was also part of my store inventory during the early years.
For the benefit of readers, I append below the table of contents:
1. Opening the Toolbox;
2. Welcome Your New Ideas;
3. Reconsidering Your Goals;
4. Exploring Your Many Alternatives;
5. Refining Your Ideas;
6. Thinking in Alternate Ways;
7. Thinking Dimensionally;
8. Understanding Clarity;
9. Considering Your Goals Some More;
10. Taking Action;
11. Using the Toolbox;
12. Closing the Toolbox;
In particular, I like the author's observations & arguments in the book:
- goals influence thinking in surprising & subtle ways & they expand possibilities;
- besides weight & money, other dimensions that defy being measured such as love, risk, assertiveness are a part of virtually every real problem;
- a failure to reach a clear understanding lies at the root of most unsolved problems;
- thinking visually, thinking in concepts & using intuition enhance the problem solving process;
My end anaylsis of this book is this: An excellent primer if you want to revv up & sharpen your problem solving skills. It's really a toolbox! You can't go to the office without it!
[I am very glad & also feel proud for the author, as his book has been translated into Chinese, Russian, Indonesian, Japanese & Korean. Watch out the Chinese!]
The Complete Guide and Toolbox.......2006-09-17
Creative problem solving is my passion, as well as the crux of what I do for a living. I was a skilled problem-solver even before I bought this book. And I have other excellent tools that have made me a lot of money.
So why am I recommending this book so highly? Because it's taken my problem-solving abilities to an even higher level. It's complete and practical...and less expensive than any of the other tools I've used.
If you want to drastically increase your ability to create solutions to all kinds of problems, I can't think of a single reason why you should do anything other than...buy this book.
Even after reading this recommendation, you'll be pleasantly surprised when you receive the book.
The most useful book you might ever purchase!.......2004-01-31
I think the saying about what kind of exercise machine to buy certainly applies to books on creativity as well, i.e., "Get the one you'll use!" My keen interest in enhancing my creativity has led me to investigate numerous creativity tools & techniques in the form of software, card decks, lists, and books. The result of my research is that I use *this* book's tools & techniques before any other. Sometimes I also make use of other resources for creativity, but I always begin with this book. Why? For me, the techniques usually "Hit the nail on the head," consistenly helping me to not just solve a particular challenge, but to widen my perspective on the problem so that I'm more confident that I'm solving the "real" problem. This book also offers me the most user-friendly experience (compared to other resources), as the examples interspersed between the techniques are typically fascinating and instructive.
The bottom line is that, for me, this book is the best single source of the most useful creativity tools & techniques, and at the least cost compared to other resources. I don't think you can beat it!
An Excellent Guide to USEFUL innovation.......1999-05-20
This book is both practical and useful in giving you the ability to create creative solutions to any type of problem in any field from family problems to business to science. This isn't one of those cutesy mind game books either. It gives you exercises and tips to not only create good solutions, but to create solutions that are useful, compared to creative solutions that are useless (who wants those?) Excellent. I highly recommend no matter your age, occupation, or location. The information in this book is timeless. Also a good book related to this for those who are into science, check out Robert Scott Root-Bernstein's book Discovering.

Committees For Dummies.......2001-08-06
When an ex-cop writes a book, it's usually all about his exploits. When a retiring management consultant writes a book, it's usually his working theory as gospel. This one purports to offer a system of decision making for large corporations. The language is shrouded in inept metaphors and the stuff related to methodology fills maybe 20 pages. The rest of the 230pp is filled with overformalized examples of application of his methods, some of them ludicrous as selectng a gift for a person's birthday using his decision making process. The man probably consulted for 30 years as he claims, but if his work involved any expertise or experience,he does not reveal any of it in this book. Basically he presents Scientific Method and Research Objectivity applies to Management committe work. Part one deals with conducting objective inquiries by executive teams, part two introduces criterion based option analysis and part three deals with risk assessment at the very rudimentary levels. The book requires no number crunching or statistical knowledge on part fo the reader for weighing options or ranking them. It might be worthwhile reading for the intro level management course, but the book is useless since it contains nothing new for any manager or executive with any degree of familiarity with operations research or brainstorming. The worst part of it is that he is not sharing any real experience acquired from facilitating research and consensus building with the high level executive committee planning that he must have worked with as his examples would lead us to believe; It is a terrifying thought that the upper corporate governing structure would be as ignorant and insular as simplicity of his method, assumption of total ignorance of basic research methodology on part of the executive reading this book, and the oversimplification of some of his examples seems to indicate. Almost ignored by the author is any discussion of politics, human factors and group dynamics that interfere with objective decision making and often influence large organisations to pursue less than adequate and self distructive policies.

Men of Courage.......2007-07-16
I found this book to be an eye-opener to the battle of March 2, 1968. My husband was with B Company (Manchu). It hurts my heart to read of the wounded and dead. The Brotherhood of these brave men is beyond words as being a woman I don't think I could have gone through what these men did. The tragedy unfolds in this book very stirringly. The writer made me feel as if I was there. I would recommend it to everyone. In fact, I've already started recommending it to people I've talked to. I would like to thank L.D. James for writing this book and all the men who participated in their input because I know it wasn't easy to talk about since it brought back the bad feelings of the conflict.

Inside Source.......2007-01-04
I read this book and enjoyed it. It shows the sacrifices that our soldiers made and still make even to this day. My uncle was one of these men and his account is a little different from James's and a bit more critical of a number of actions that occurred that day. His judgement and recollections of what happened is also more critical of the actions and comments that were made later by people involved in the days events. This book only scratches the surface of the events of this day. I thank Mr. James for writing this book and sharing with us the horrible events that accompanied these men and the unimaginable sacrifices they made.
A Story that Needed to Be Told.......2005-12-04
Written with brutal honesty, but also with grace, sensitivity, and understanding, UNFORTUNATE SONS is a heart-breaking account of the ambush and destruction of Charlie Company, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment near Hoc Mon, Vietnam. Had James, a veteran-turned-journalist, not devoted himself to finding and interviewing survivors of the ambush, what happened that terrible day in March of '68 would have been forever lost to History. James has given the young grunts of Charlie Company the tribute they deserve, a book without hyperbole that tells who they were as people and what they endured as soldiers. Having located the former Viet Cong who planned and executed the ambush, James also affords the reader a rare glimpse into the enemy's side of the war, and he does so without rancor or recriminations. It is sad to learn that certain retired officers discouraged James from writing this book for the subject could not be more important and the author could not have been more fair. A great book from any perspective. Review by Keith Nolan, Washington County, Missouri, author of RIPCORD, SAPPERS IN THE WIRE, OPERATION BUFFALO, etc.
Painful True Story.......2005-10-11
James close up view of an "obscure" action in Vietnam is an engaging read. It benefits enormously from incorporating the information from the Viet Cong side. The brutal simplicity of the ambush and the fatally poor intel and security of the US troops is chilling. It serves as a microcosm of the war. It should also be read by those who claim the US never lost a battle.

The world of the dinosaurs revealed, from the world's leading scientists and visionaries
Customer Reviews:
a decent but flawed book.......2001-03-03
The Ultimate Dinosaur is an ambitious book, one that seeks to alternate sections on the latest theories on the origin, lives, and deaths of dinosaurs as well as pterosaurs and prehistoric marine reptiles, all written by such noted experts as George Olshevsky, Sankar Chatterjee, and others, with dinosaur-themed science fiction short stories by such authors as Charles Sheffield, Gregory Benford, and Harry Turtledove. A great concept.
Unfortunately it was rather unevenly carried out. The non-fiction sections are quite good, though a few are relatively dry to read. I did learn a few things reading these sections, and alone they just about make the book worthwhile. There were some interesting discussions over the relationship of prosauropods and sauropods for instance, and there was a great article on migrating dinosaurs.
However the short stories vary alot in style and quality, some quite good, other more moderately decent, and a few frankly terrible and hard to get through. The short stories and non-fictions are paired together, and it looks like they found it difficult to find a short story to put with some of the non-fiction sections.
Though this may only apply to the hard-cover edition which I have, I feel I must point out the book was either poorly edited, which I find suprising, or poorly published. The book was replete with words that were run together, misplaced punctuation, odd gaps in sentences, and even misspelled words. They were so common at times that it was jarring and irritating. While many books have one or two such errors, there were many of them in this work. Hopefully the paperback version cleared this up.
Having said that though this was still not a bad book and a worthwhile one to get, though frankly I would not place at the top of the list of books to fill your dinosaur needs. Still, wouldn't be bad to have either.
what a value!.......2000-09-15
big names in science and sf coupled with top paleoartists!
From a dinosaur fan:.......2000-07-07
I have always been a big dinosaur lover, and in this book, Silverberg, Dobson, and Zimmerman really bring these creatures to life. I loved every page. This is a book for both kids and the paleontologist.
The Untimate Dinosaur.......1999-02-07
This book The Ultimate Dinosaur, is very fact filled. There is a lot more of text than there are pictures and it is very informational. This book is for dinosaur lovers only. If you really love to read about dinosaurs, then this book is for you. Information on almost all the dinosaurs that ever lived millions of years ago. Each part of the book is seperated by each preastoric period and then by whether the dinosaur is herbavorious or carnivorous. Then it tells what was happening in that period of time. This book also tells what type of plant life was in a period of time.
