Book Description
Over 175 full-color photos of this beautiful china with histories, sizes, dates, and values. The primary emphasis is on the most popular dinnerware from 1900-1950. This is the first book devoted to the dinnerware of Homer Laughlin. 2000 values. AUTHORBIO: Joanne Jasper, an antique lover and Homer Laughlin fan for years, visited the Homer Laughlin plant in Newell, West Virginia with her daughter and decided to make her idea for a collector's reference a reality. She spent countless hours researching, interviewing, and taking photographs. Her book has become a bestseller. REVIEW: This book was inspired by a visit to the Homer Laughlin Factory in Newell, West Virginia, by the author. For the casual collector of Homer Laughlin China, this book will show the evolution of the Homer Laughlin designs throughout the years. For the serious collector and dealer, this book is a great reference manual which can assist in the identification of different shapes and decorative patterns. It especially assists in differentiating between shapes which closely resemble one another.
Customer Reviews:
One of the first books written on the "Homer Laughlin" fine china subject.......2007-06-14
I bought this book quite a while ago. At that time, this was about the only book on the HOMER LAUGHLIN subject.
It all started when I had inherited a beautiful set of Homer Laughlin "Georgian" fine china, and I wanted to know more (& get more pieces). Unfortunately, fifteen+ years ago, there weren't too many H.L. china collectors and/or identification books on this subject, (aside from the avid FIESTA WARE collectors).
Needless to say, I never did find more pieces to my H.L. china set, since the H.L. Georgian pattern had sooooo many various flower styles (ie: since the early production of the 1940's Georgian pattern).
However, the thing that I did find most helpful from this book was that it gave a nice history of the company. I was very excited to get any information on the early history of this china company.
But as far as finding a H.L. book with all the patterns and styles, that never came about. Even the later re-prints of this book did not have all the flower styles of many of the H.L. fine china patterns.
(By the way, REPLACEMENTS INC, has no early H.L. chinas either. Thus, the older pieces are definetly hard to find).
Anyhow,if you are interested in a Homer Laughlin book that gives a nice history of the company, then you might find this book helpful.
But if you have inherited a specific early H.L. china pattern, as I did, then you may be out of luck in finding more information about it.
The reason being that H.L. changed the flower patterns so often and also depending on the store that carried the H.L. fine china. (FIESTA was a different story though, since FIESTA was issued for many years. And plus, there are so many books issued, specific to just FIESTA, that this book only touches on the FIESTA subject).
The Book that Helped.......2006-02-23
After my aunt's demise several years ago, I was the recipient of some odd pieces of old china. I wondered as to the age of the pieces, and so I went to the Internet. What do you think I found. You're right, my china was listed in the book that I purchased through Amazon.com.
Thank you very much.
The Collector's Encyclopedia of Homer Laughlin China : Refer.......2001-09-05
DISAPPOINTED THAT THE BOOK DID NOT GO BACK TO THE EARLY HOMER LAUGHLIN. LITTLE INFO ABOUT VARIOUS MARKS. NOT COMPLETE ENOUGH FOR THE PRICE.
Find out what those old dishes are...and what ther're worth........2000-04-14
I recently aquired some Homer Laughlin china and was unable to identify the patterns. This book helped me tremendously! The pictures and descriptions were very useful. Also, there is alot of trivia about the company and some of the designers. I highly recommend this book.
An excellent reference for the collector..........2000-04-02
This is a very well organized reference for those collectors of Homer Laughlin who enjoy the "other" HL pottery (other than Fiesta, of course). Jasper has put a great deal of effort into categorizing the various patterns, and includes hundreds of photos. Each pattern has a little history that goes with it, and often the backstamp (mark) will be shown alongside. She includes an extensive history of the pottery, discusses the difficulties in identifying certain patterns, and includes pages from some of the old catalogs. All in all an admirable work and well worth the purchase price.
Book Description
An oxymoron is a combination of contradictory or incongruous words. As fabric interpretations of oxymorons, the 40 quilts in a traveling exhibit opening at the Museum of the American quilter's Society in August 2001 are also contradictions - in title, technique, focus, and design. Quilts in the traveling exhibit were made by many respected and well-known designers. From a quilt named Clearly Deafening Silence, and more, each is a riddle in weave. Meet the designers, see their sketches, and learn the unique thought processes, approaches, and techniques used to create each quilt. REVIEW: A reader from Brentwood, TN says, 'The title itself is a contradiction. 'Absurdly Logical Quilts.'The author has examined the quilts, and contradictory titles, of 40 top American present day quilters. She has explained in simple detail the range of mediums, materials and techniques used by each quilter. It is interesting how each quilter describes her own work of art....'

Awesome Modern Quilting .......2007-01-12
What a fun book for those people who want a book that is more than country squares and fabrics. Quilting can be a contemporary and exciting art form!
Offers a rare & recommended view into creative consciousness.......2001-10-11
Aptly edited by experienced needlecrafter Dianne Hire, Oxymorons: Absurdly Logical Quilts is a fascinating book that displays quilts constructed from the inspiration of oxymorons, innately contradictory phrases such as Clearly Ambiguous, Extinct Life, Silent Scream, Linear Curve, Icy Hot, Deafening Silence, and more. Each quilt's weaving embodies the riddle, and brings the subtle paradoxes of a common yet bizarrely meaningless phrase to life. With sketches and glimpses into the thought processes of the quilt designers, Oxymorons: Absurdly Logical Quilts offers a rare and recommended view into creative consciousness of quilt makers.
Oxymoron:A Contridiction?.......2001-08-23
The title itself is a contridiction. "Absurdly Logical Quilts" The author has examined the quilts, and contridictory titles, of 40 top American present day quilters. She has explained in simple detail the range of mediums, materials and techniques used by each quilter. It is interesting how each quilter describes her own work of art. Having followed quilting for a number of years, I thank Mrs. Hire for giving us an indepth, and sometimes humoruos, look at this unique art form.
Book Description
At the dawn of his international fame, architect Richard Neutra was approached by a St. Louis socialite, Grace Lewis Miller, to design a small winter home on the edge of glamour-baked Palm Springs. Miller wanted an open, light-filled house that could also act as a studio for her fashionably avant-garde exercise course in posture and grace, "The Mensendieck System." This unique program, combined with the desert landscape and the proactive health-minded client appealed to the idealist in Neutra. The frequent, fervent dialog between Neutra and Miller, who had great mutual respect, produced a work of forward-thinking and artful architecture.
In Richard Neutra's Miller House, Stephen Leet traces the conception and realization of the house, examines the complex relationship between architect and client, and shows how the Mensendieck System influenced the creation of this seminal Neutra project. Beautiful duotone photographs by Julius Shulman, excerpts from the detailed correspondence between Neutra and Miller, and sketches and drawing provide valuable insight into the design process.
Like the houses of Albert Frey, a contemporary of Neutra's who also build in the desert, the Miller House shows how architecture , the California landscape, and an interest in well-being can intersect in a moment of the architectural sublime.
Customer Reviews:
great house, decent book.......2005-10-17
This book presents the people, ideas, and history behind Richard Neutra's for Grace Lewis Miller in Palm Springs, California. The house and the process of its design and construction are well documented with reproductions of important texts, drawings, and photographs. The book's contents are fascinating for their intimate, direct presentation of these primary materials.
While many photographs, drawings, and documents are presented here for the first time, the author's discussion and explication of this historically significant material is generally dry and academic. While Mr. Leet puts the project into a variety of contexts, the overall effort lacks direction and focus. That the house itself is worthy of a book-length monograph is without dispute. However, the author's attempts to intellectualize the material fall flat. A variety of interesting (but generally unrelated) material is included as part of an attempt to put the project in historical context, but these illustrations and examples tend to be somewhat forced and/or obscure. In addition, the selection of the images includes what appear to be gratuitous displays of the flesh. Such illustrations seem to appear when the text is driest, as if the somewhat sensuous nature of the images may help keep the reader from dozing off to sleep.
Throughout the book, I regularly felt the desire to skip passages of text hoping to find something more compelling, original, or informative. Many writers dealing with the modern movement in architecture incessantly present stale rationalizations for the necessity for International Style modernism. These discussions typically deal with modern man's need for health, sunlight, and exercise as justification for the resulting abstract geometrical forms. Of course, one can exercise just as well in classically styled buildings, although the details and ornament tend to clutter the setting undermining the look of strength and vitality. The simplicity of modernist architecture tends to enhance the sleek, well-toned look of athletic bodies; an impassive, monotonous context tends to exaggerate a person's visual qualities, whether positive or negative.
What this book essentially tells us: Mrs. Miller taught the Mensendieck system of exercise, she had the foresight to hire Neutra, and ended up with a wonderful modern winter home. The examples of partially clothed female bodies, including Mrs. Miller's, seem designed to pique our curiosity. Apparently, Mrs. Miller hoped the svelte images of her would have a similar effect on her client base. However, despite her personal beauty, impeccable taste in architecture, advertisements praising her exercise regime, and membership in Palm Spring's prestigious clubs, her well-intentioned desire to create a successful business teaching "functional exercises" never became more than an idea.
The author's selection of titles and headings can sometimes border on the pretentious as with "Eliminating 'Phantomic Extension'," "The Deluge," and "Scorpions and Black Widows". In the chapter entitled "Construction by Remote Control," three of the five photographs of the construction depict Neutra and his assistant standing at the building site; the other two photographs show the house under construction with no one at all. So much for remote control building.
With respect to the book's publication, its production quality is excellent. The graphic design is simple and appealing. The sans-serif font is elegant, crisp, and most appropriate to the subject. Unfortunately, it is also rather small. When the reader repeatedly comes upon entirely or essentially blank pages, its hard not to think that the font chosen could have been one or two points larger. While graphically and aesthetically interesting, the excessive use of white space seems creates the regrettable impression that there was insufficient material available to fill a book. The selected colors are appropriately muted and the photographs beautifully printed.
Great thanks go to Princeton Architectural Press for publishing high-quality books on topics typically given insufficient attention by other publishers in the field. In this case, the historical material is worthy of their high standards, but the author's text is somewhat less compelling.

A Tale of Two Families.......2007-06-07
Through the 18th and 19th centuries in France, through various means, but particularly by the juvenile courts and its assemblage of notables, including mothers, which Donzelot calls the tutelage complex, families became a mechanism through which the government extended its control over workers, particularly 'delinquents,' rendering them docile by increasingly severe oversight, successively imposed by mothers, social workers and ultimately penal authorities. In contrast, for the bourgeois, the family was reoriented away from its former purposes of self-aggrandizement and propertied alliances toward the protection and cultivation of children. While working class and bourgeous children alike became subject to school supervision and education, bourgeois families also employed private extracurricular education to assure advancement and address the problem of 'difficult children.' Counselors spoke to the entire family, not offering prescriptions but therapy, maturation not being measured as the acceptance of duty, but a negotiated rapprochement, having the consequence of releasing well-to-do mothers to find a measure of sexual liberation. Thus, while a state-sponsored institution, the meaning of family manifested very contingently and particularly, depending on the power of its members, particularly, and ultimately, in their relation to the state. Donzelot especially marvels at the way psychotherapy could be employed for such varied and contradictory purposes, suggesting that Freud was to psychiatry and medicine what Keynes was to economics, each making necessity appear provisional.
State-driven force homogenization of family structures.......2001-04-08
Donzelot's historical review of the French government's attempt to engineer society via force homogenization of family structures is not only a message of the historical conditions of the early 1900s. It is also an intimidating description of what can happen when social engineering goes bad. The book describes the mechanization not only of the centralized institutions such as the judicial system, but also of local agencies, such individual philanthropists and community help organizations.
Donelot traces the transition of control from the Church where priests constructed the images of the "ideal" family to educational, judicial, medical and psychiatric constructed images of the ideal family. In all cases, Donzelot is able to illustrate how the structural construction of familial roles fails to inculcate meaning into familial life. Moreover, he is able to illustrate how these maneuvers actually inhibit meaning or destroy already existing emotionally supportive structures. His writing is a critically important look back in time that allows a clearer vision of the future of the interrelations of social structures and individual lives.

Book Description
Two irrefutable facts: (1) Money alone will not guarantee retirement happiness, and (2) Although police officers share many elements of the retirement experience with others, some of their experiences, interests, viewpoints, and perceptions differ from those in other occupations. Based on these self-evident assumptions, Life After Policing is different. First, we went to the experts. Not to the self-proclaimed retirement experts, but to 400 retired police officers (your retirement mentors) who responded to our online survey by sharing their experiences, impressions and advice on retirement. This research is current, unique and exclusive to Life After Policing. Second, given that the key to retirement happiness is to replace satisfactions lost from work, this book includes a self-help workshop, based on more than twenty years experience, to ensure that satisfactions lost from police work will be replaced in retirement. In short, Life After Policing is the definitive guide to retirement from police work. Dr. Alan Roadburg is a leading authority on retirement lifestyle education. After six years as a tenured university professor teaching and conducting research in the Sociology of Retirement and Social Gerontology, he changed careers sixteen years ago and established The Second Career Program, specializing in career enhancement and retirement lifestyle workshops. He has conducted hundreds of lifestyle planning workshops for thousands of pre- and post-retirees. Dr. Roadburg's easy-to-read and practical book elevates retirement lifestyle education to a new standard.

LIFE AFTER POLICING.......2007-05-14
AS A CURRENT POLICE CHIEF GETTING READY TO RETIRE IN LATE 2007,I FIND MYSELF ASKING MANY OF THE SAME QUESTIONS THAT LIFE AFTER POLICING ADDRESSES. THIS BOOK GAVE ME AN INSIGHT TO MANY OF MY CONCERNS AND I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANY POLICE OFFICER (NO MATTER WHAT RANK)THAT IS THINKING ABOUT RETIRING.

Enlightening.......2007-01-12
I found the book to be very informative and useful. Many officers never consider what retirement would be like, other than not having to go to work. The main focus has always been on finances...how to survive monetarily. But mental and physical health is just as importanat and this book addresses those issues. I thought it was important to start thinking about how to "survive" during your retirement. Overall, I like the book.

Book Description
The South African Police is one of the world's most controversial police forces. In this, the first detailed study of the origins and development of policing in South Africa, John Brewer places current allegations of police misconduct in their historical context. Long after similar forces elsewhere in the world had been modernized, the South African Police were continuing to discharge a colonial role, using the methods and style of the nineteenth century. Dr Brewer links this lack of development and modernization to the South African state's need for colonialism. It is this, he argues, that is also the source of the close relationship between police and state in South Africa. Now that government policies have changed, the SAP must adapt: Dr Brewer ends by addressing the vexed question of police reform and argues that it will be severely constrained by the SAP's failure to transcend its colonial origins.

Book Description
This new book is the first practical guide to the sensitive topic of family liaison, aimed directly at the police. The text focuses on the key role that family liaison plays in the police service, explains how the role has developed and provides practitioners with a clear understanding of why relatives and friends are entitled to the highest standard of response from the police but also why no investigation can be truly effective without this relationship being supported, resourced and supervised throughout. The book covers a wide range of important issues including the development and delivery of training, operating protocols, contacting and establishing relationships with the family, management and mass fatalities. Highly practical, the book includes examples, illustrative diagrams, summary sections and checklists, plus a wide range of case study chapters based on key events, including the the Ladbroke Grove Rail Crash, the 2004 Tsunami, the Bali Bombings, the September 11th attacks and the London Bombings of July 7th. This book is a must for all those who work in this difficult area. The Blackstone's Practical Policing Series is a collection of highly practical, up-to-date titles covering a range of essential subjects in today's policing arena. Developed from a detailed understanding of police information needs, this series seeks to explain the relevant law, practice and procedure from a police officer's perspective.

Book Description
Many of our children live in communities where violence, fear, and despair are commonplace. This book describes how one city developed a collaborative effort between law-enforcement and mental health professionals in order to help these children and their families. The Child Development-Community Policing Program in New Haven, Connecticut, was initiated in 1991 to deal more effectively with children who are victims or perpetrators of violence. Police officers, preparing for the new responsibilities of community-based policing, have become familiar with an array of strategies for preventing and responding to community violence. Mental health professionals have learned firsthand about the texture and trauma of the lives of children at risk. Police and mental health professionals working together have been able to mobilize treatment services more quickly and effectively and to assure that treatment plans are carried out. This manual provides a model, case studies, and guidelines for training the participants, operating a consultation service, and evaluating the program on an ongoing basis, all of which will be useful for other communities seeking to implement a similar project.
