A History of Military Thought: From the Enlightenment to the Cold War

Book Description
"This is a brilliant and penetrating study which revises a great deal our commonly accepted assumptions about Mahan's arguments on the influence of seapower and on naval strategy in general. It is certain to provoke great debate." -- Paul M. Kennedy, Dilworth Professor of History and Director, International Security Studies, Yale University
Between 1890 and 1913, Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan published a series of books on naval warfare in the age of sail, which won a wide readership in his own day and established his reputation as the founder of modern strategic history. But Mahan's two principal arguments have been gravely misunderstood ever since, according to Jon Tetsuro Sumida. Instead of representing Mahan as an advocate of national naval supremacy, Sumida shows him asserting that only a multinational naval consortium could defend international trade. Instead of presenting Mahan as a man who adhered to strategic principles, Sumida shows that he stressed the importance of an officer's judgment and character formed by the study of history.
Inventing Grand Strategy and Teaching Command includes a subject index to all Mahan's published books and an extensive bibliography. This is a book for scholars and students of military and strategic thinking and is a natural for libraries of U.S. service academies and U.S. armed services agencies and organizations.
Customer Reviews:
Grand Analysis.......2007-04-15
This book is considerably more than a mere summary of the thinking of one of the most important naval strategist in U.S. history. Sumida has undertaken, very successfully, to organize the thoughts of Alfred Thayer Mahan into an accessible and coherent structure. This work provides the student of Mahan's strategy with an indispensable framework to understand the thinking that produced that strategy. Of particular value are a "select analytical index" of Mahan's writings. This book is not meant to be a substitute for reading Mahan's work, especially the first volume of `Influence' series, but does provide a sure guide for interpreting those writings.
Alfred Thayer Mahan himself, although a brilliant thinker, clearly had a number of faults. Sumida while by no means diminishing Mahan's accomplishments engages these to demonstrate the full scope of Mahan's thought process. All in all I would say that this is the best book that this reviewer is aware of on the meaning and implications of Mahan's seminal work. Mahan's version of grand strategy is now pretty much obsolete in many respects, but it is still worth studying and analyzing. This book makes both these activities considerably easier.
Full of great Mahan quotes.......2006-01-24
Mahan gained fame through the impact of a single book, his Influence of Sea Power 1660-1783. However, Sumida reminds us that Mahan published for much of his life, and quotes extensively from his lesser-known works and private correspondence. It is this that I enjoyed, rather than Sumida's theorizing. If you treat this book as an easy to read "Best Of Mahan", then you'll surely enjoy it.
Mahan in Full.......2005-03-11
There is no more prominent name - American or otherwise - in naval theory and grand strategy than Alfred Thayer Mahan (1840-1914). The only more enduring name in strategic studies today is that of the Prussian master, Carl von Clausewitz. Unfortunately, like Clausewitz, Mahan's work is rarely read in the original; instead, his ideas are summarized and conveyed in secondary sources or, worse still, in isolated quotes often extracted out of context and with the express purpose of defending a particular contemporary position.
One might argue that personal interpretation is necessary when discussing Clausewitz. He never published in his lifetime; his masterpiece "On War" was published posthumously. The treatise was largely a rough draft and the main arguments were built using the theoretical construct of dialectical relationships, which, almost by definition, are open to debate. Moreover, from the American perspective, Clausewitz wasn't translated into English (and not translated very well at that) until 1873, which remained the only English edition for nearly a century. (For more on Clausewitz's reception in the English-speaking world and the transmogrification of his ideas see Christopher Bassford's authoritative "Clausewitz in English").
For some reason, Mahan's magnum opus "The Influence of Seapower Upon History, 1660-1783" is approached in much the same way as Clausewitz even though it suffers from none of these interpretive handicaps (although both books are, admittedly, tough reads). As anyone who has studied military strategy knows, Mahan and his theories have been distilled down to a few prescriptive policies or actions: the call for an all big ship navy; the positive attributes of imperialism; a focus on a decisive battle at sea; and, above all, the maxim "never divide the fleet!"
In "Inventing Grand Strategy" the distinguished navalist Jon Sumida takes a full view of Mahan and his work, and puts particular focus on Mahan's thoughts on teaching and fostering naval command. To begin with, "Influence" was merely the first of a three-part series, and just one of eighteen major pieces of history, biography and philosophy Mahan published over his lifetime. In the twenty-five years after "Influence" first appeared, as Sumida demonstrates, Mahan refined his arguments and, in some cases, changed fundamental conclusions from his first work. For instance, Mahan came to the conclusion that overseas trade was NOT a prerequisite to building a large navy and he came to doubt that a continental power like France or Russia could ever put the appropriate focus on seapower that an isolate island power like England, Japan and United States.
In closing, this book is a real gem and should be read by anyone with an interest in seapower and strategy. It provides great background and perspective on Mahan and his ideas, without being merely a redaction of "The Influence of Seapower Upon History."
A Review From One of the Author's Students.......2004-08-25
This book is a fresh re-analysis of the complete works of Alfred Thayer Mahan, certainly one of the greatest American military strategists. The author is Dr. John Sumida, a well-respected military historian and professor at the University of Maryland at College Park (GO TERPS... hehe). The work is part of a thesis that Dr. Sumida (and I seem to recall him mentioning that a few others were in his camp) has been slowly and carefully developing through his research in recent years that is a radical reinterpretation of Mahan's work, but mainly his intent, along with the equally seminal work, of the famous 19th century military genius/theorist/strategist Carl von Clausewitz, "On War." This thesis is the basis of high-level graduate and under-graduate classes he has at UM, a truncated version of that class that he gives at the Naval War College (I believe), and lectures that he gives at numerous other institutions. The work exists within the sub-category of military history that has been termed "Strategic Theory," which is basically the intersection of advanced philosophy with complex military situations and strategy. This is not your average history book, it is complex, difficult, challenging, and fascinating. A careful read of the, relatively, short book is necessary to grasp the message and concepts. However, if you are a person who cut their teeth on Nietzsche and reads (not: watches movies) about battles from hundreds or thousands of years ago for fun, then I assure you that you will feel a great reward for having conquered this complex topic. It is worth noting that Dr. Sumida's views in the field are far from traditional. His analysis of Mahan and Clausewitz is counter to the predominant culture's views but his point of view is steadily gaining acceptance, as evidenced by the fact that he teaches (or taught) at the Naval War College. This book is just the beginning however, covering only Mahan but still presenting and backing up Dr. Sumida's thesis. The bulk of his work and insight should be coming along soon in a book that he says will be an adaptation of the class (focusing on Clausewitz and his "On War") that I took with him. I recommend this book and the rest of his work, but of course you must decide if this is the stuff for you. All I can say is that when his book on Clausewitz come out, it will go in between this book and "On War" on my bookshelf. After I read it, of course.
Note: If you want the poor man's version of his class (good luck) the books he had us read were these and in this order.
1. Hare Brain Tortoise Mind by Guy Claxton
2. Zen in the Art of Archery by Eugene Herrigel
3. Inventing Grand Strategy and Teaching Command: The Classic Works of Alfred Thayer Mahan Reconsidered by Jon Tetsuro Sumida
4. On War by Carl von Clausewitz
Sumida Kicks Out the Jams.......2003-03-05
Alfred Thayer Mahan is one of those oft-referred-to but little read historical figures whose staggering written output has been reduced by name-droppers to a single catch phrase: Naval Consortium. However, like Clausewitz, the man cannot so neatly be summed up without misinterpretation or drastic loss of understanding. Sumida's "reconsidering" of the seminal Navy man attempts to put things right, and mostly succeeds. In Inventing Grand Strategy, Sumida has written a wondrously clear and concise executive summary of Mahan's work, with a focus on the psychologically crushing moral aspects of leadership decision-making during wartime. To this end, there is plenty of talk regarding all the determination, courage, fear, boldness, danger, will, spirit, and indecision inherent in a situation where organized groups of strangers try to kill one another. This nonphysical component of war is often pushed to the wayside, but Sumida chooses to zero in on the men rather than the machines, to startling visceral effect. At the aesthetic level, the words in Inventing Grand Strategy are not beautiful, but they don't need to be. Instead, there is a refreshing directness and force to them, complemented by a palpable feeling of full disclosure. The only really troubling thing concerning the book is the undertone of shining righteousness; Sumida's nearly religious sense of faith that he's on to something big, and if you can't see it, there's a problem on your end. This subtle but steady aggression is extraordinary, and makes Sumida sort of the MC5 of military historians. On a different note, as good and interesting and insightful as the body of the book is, the real prize is the introduction. Here, Sumida manages to harmoniously and elegantly correlate musical improvisation to military improvisation, with a touch of Zen thrown in. A sight to behold.

This book does not need to be reviewed........1999-12-27
People familiar with studies of the Plains Indians and their culture already know that this is the defininitive book on the Cheyennes. The details of their history, culture, and religion are fascinating. However, those just beginning to dabble in this area of study should be warned, it may be more than they are looking for right now. For example, the alliances and warfare between the Cheyenne and other tribes would be very difficult to follow if you didn't already know a little bit about who they were and how their migratory paths crossed, etc. Once you've done a fair amount of study on the subject, however, your library will not be complete without it.

Biased Beyond Belief.......2002-02-16
Reginald S Craige is quoted as saying "I decided to write this book in 1955, after witnessing a series of television programs on the Sand Creek engagement, which I thought unfair and inaccurate.
Research and exchange of information with other persons interested in the same campaign convinced me that the known facts on this controversial affair should all be presented" the shame is that the book was ever written at all.
Throughout the book he quotes from Senate Reports, Senate Executive Documents, various "White" newspapers of the time, but nowhere in the entire book does he quote from any source other than from the white man, other writers have managed quite unbiased writings by taking the time and trouble to seek out information from all sources both white and red but not Mr Craige.
Interesting reading if you are anti native american but if you require a somewhat more accurate history of the making of the american west forget this book because it only gives the white side of the story.

Book Description
It is widely recognized that the neural basis of brain function can be fully understood only by integrating many disciplines at many levels. Studies of synaptic organization are bringing about a quiet revolution in achieving this goal, as documented by this unique book over the past 30 years. In this fifth edition, the results of the mouse and human genome projects are incorporated for the first time. Molecular biologists interested in functional genomics and proteomics of the brain will find answers here to the critical questions: what are the cell and circuit functions of gene products? Also for the first time, the reader is oriented to supporting neuroscience databases. Among the new advances covered are 2-photon confocal laser microscopy of dendrites and dendritic spines, biochemical analyses, and dual patch and multielectrode recordings, applied together with an increasing range of behavioral and gene-targeting methods. Leading experts in the best understood brain regions bring together the molecular, anatomical, functional, and behavioral data in authoritative integrated accounts. The chapters are organized in the same format, covering the neural elements, synaptic connections, basic circuits, physiology, neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, membrane properties, dendritic properties, and with a final section on how the circuits mediate specific behaviors. The uniform framework for each chapter enables the authors to higlight the principles that are common to all regions, as well as the adaptations unique to each, thus serving as a model for understanding the neural basis of behavior.

Comprehensive book on neuroscience/cortical networks.......2007-05-14
This book provides a great understanding of the basic elements of brain and their interactions. It takes a radical approach of synaptic organization as the basis of brain functions. It is a must for everyone interested in neuro/brain/mind science.
A classic work now in its 5th edition.......2005-11-05
I became acquainted with this book when I read the first edition, way back in the late 70s when I was a neuroscience grad student. I remember how impressed I was that here, for the first time really, different areas of the brain could be analyzed and compared by how the neurons wired up with each other. Later in life as a young neurologist I read through the 3rd edition, and now as a more seasoned one I've just finished reading the fifth. The book has maintained its basic organizational structure while greatly expanding its content, sometimes to the detriment of clarity being lost in the details, which is why I took off a star. The first two chapters are very helpful, with one of the best discussions of different ion channels and neurotransmitter receptors in the context of neural cell physiology I've seen. In subsequent chapters the basic circuitry of the spinal cord, cochlear nucleus, olfactory bulb, retina, cerebellum, thalamus, basal ganglia, olfactory cortex, hippocampus and cerebral cortex are discussed in similar fashion. First the neuronal elements--cell types--are defined, then the basic anatomy of the area, then the synaptic connections between different types of neurons, then the anatomy of the circuitry, then the physiology of the synaptic actions. Finally an attempt is made to relate all of these basics to how the brain area functions for the organism.
As others have pointed out, the book requires concentration to read, even to somebody with my long background. But it is rewarding to see how far the field has come in the nearly 30 years I've been studying it. It's only marginally clinically relevant for a neurologist, but for basic neuroscientists I'd consider it a must read.
The Synaptic View of Brain Function.......2004-06-11
This is a very good neurophysiology book from the morphological and physiological viewpoints. It's inexpensive and well written. Thanks Gordon.
Marvelous book for the brain aficionado ..........2004-03-17
This is an excellent book: clear, well-organized, and well-written. It examines how groups of neurons give rise to brain functions. The introductory chapter lays the groundwork, going over basic theories of how groups of cells perform computations and what mechanisms they use to do it. Subsequent chapters stand alone, each with a focus on a particular brain region (hippocampus, basal ganglia, cortex, thalamus, retina, etc.).
I agree with an earlier reviewer: this book is not for the uninitiated, although it is spectacularly helpful for theoretical neuroscientists who are modeling cell assemblies as well as experimentalists working at the cell or systems level. However, I disagree with his list of good introductory books. "Principles of Neural Science" in particular is a good reference but not terribly readable. I would recommend Nicholls' "From Neuron to Brain" as a more accessible book about brain function. The Scientific American series, including "The Scientific American Book of the Brain," is quite good factually and provides a more general overview including some psychology, but the quality of the writing varies. Finally, for kicks, a newcomer should try the enjoyable, controversial "How the Mind Works" by Stephen Pinker. He is biased and arrogant, but also clever and entertaining.

my brain study group used this book for textbook. my major is traditional chinese medicine treatment of neurology disease, so i need some neuroscience part. this book is not easy reading, but this book gaved me many information for neuroscience.

Self-organizing individual differences in brain development [An article from: Developmental Review]
M.D. Lewis

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Developmental Review, published by Elsevier in . The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
Brain development is self-organizing in that the unique structure of each brain evolves in unpredictable ways through recursive modifications of synaptic networks. In this article, I review mechanisms of neural change in real time and over development, and I argue that change at each of these time scales embodies principles of self-organizing systems. I demonstrate how corticolimbic configurations that emerge within occasions lay down synaptic structure across occasions, giving rise to individual trajectories that become entrenched with age. Emotions have a powerful influence on this process. This is because the neural processes mediating emotion consolidate patterns of activation across the brain, through their enhancement of inter-regional coordination in real time and their contribution to synaptic shaping over development. The loss of corticolimbic plasticity with age is an unfortunate fact of development, but it is compensated in part by transitional phases and individual learning experiences through which habits are modified or replaced. I emphasize variations in inter-systemic coupling as a key mediator of developing individual differences, and I discuss the acquisition of anxious/depressive appraisals as an example.
