    5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous & Inspirational book.......2007-10-01

This book is filled with glorious photos and inspired stitches. Minimal "how-to" but I learned a new stitch right away that I can use on lots of my work. A book that would be treasured and looked at a lot over the years.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration from nature.......2007-08-24

This book stands utterly apart from most embroidery books.

You will find no patterns to trace off. Instead, the author encourages budding embroiderers to be more creative with their embroidery by developing their own concepts and designs culled from the world around us.

The book (a very thick book, mind you, loaded with photographs) contains an assortment of ideas from nature and the encouragement to translate your vision into fabric and embroidery. This includes lots from the natural world such as trapunto quilting to mimic the texture and color cauliflower, the color combinations of a moldy orange, and the unfurling of the petals on a red flower. It also includes the intersection of the natural and constructed world, such as the stripes of railroad tracks and grass growing between. How can we take these textures and colors from our world and apply them to cloth?

This book is so gorgeous, I can only absorb it in small doses.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Inspiration.......2007-07-29

I love this book and the inspiration I get from it. It is not what I expected, but I'm glad I have it.

5 out of 5 stars Classroom between two covers.......2007-07-17

This is a fantastic book! I've taken several courses from Opus in London, and for 1/20th the cost of one class... this book taught me more than any of those classes due to Francoise's great pictures and comparisons of nature with all types of embroidery. It is a wonderful book for inspiration, although not a "how to" manual. You will not be disappointed.

    Book Description

This timely project guide concentrates on two of the key materials being newly incorporated into textiles and fiber arts—paper and metal. Both media are covered in separate sections that describe the unique properties of each, as well as textural methods, adding color, and embellishing with stitches. Paper can be molded, formed, cut, torn, embossed, and stitched; metal adds a new gleam; and additional dimensions of the material are explored with soft sheet metals, meshes, wires, and coils. Concepts build through each section, starting with elemental embroidery and basic, texture-building steps, and moving to exciting finishing ideas for combining and mixing techniques for original and innovative results.

4 out of 5 stars Great eye candy and techniques for paper artists.......2007-03-24

This is a wonderful raw art book. It has some great textures in it with instructions. It is truly a mixed-media book. There are sections on fabric, paper, metal, and how to combine techniques. There are some techniques in there that I have never tried. I have and they turned out great. I do a lot of raw art collages. I was able to glean a lot of ideas from this book. The colors and textures are great eye candy. What I liked most about this book was that it showed you what you could do with the technique once you tried it. I think that is something that every art book should do since a lot of us artists are visual learners. I think that newbies can learn from the techniques and see what are some of the possible end pieces. More experienced artists can try different techniques and glean ideas from the picts.

5 out of 5 stars this is one inspiring book!.......2006-11-07

I surely enjoyed this book and read and re-read it upon receiving my copy. the directions, list of sources, and photos were fantastic.
I would recommend this for anyone considering using these techniques in their artwork.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing artwork.......2006-11-03

Absolutely love the art in this book. It isn't a how-to book, but gives you so many ideas and inspiration, that if you've done mixed media for a little while you probably can get a lot out of it.

I use it all the time to try new things and for inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars teach an old dog to stitch!.......2006-01-19

i really thought that despite the beautiful cover and the name Maggie Grey, as she is quite the name when fabric is around, this book would be eye candy but not inspiring for me to "work on".
oh boy was i wrong! Ms. Grey's techniques for changing paper to metal and metal to stitch is quite fun! i thoroughly enjoyed just savoring every page the first time around and then i started actually playing. this is a terrific book for inspiration, teaching, learning, doing, and of course, her handiwork is quite the eye candy. i will have this book on my shelves for many years to come.

    5 out of 5 stars Paper Muse.......2006-01-08

Had to work today, so I took this book into the gallery with me. This book is enticing, enthralling, and full of that extra effort and creative spirit -- it's my paper muse.

    Delicious!

Additionally, it seems very approachable for someone new to paper arts (as I am) and yet was also enjoyed by someone who has taught paper arts.

    Book Description

A unique, visually inspiring, all-color survey of knitted textile designs and patterns.

Françoise Tellier-Loumagne has taught textile and knit design in France for more than thirty years. Drawing on her experience as teacher and practitioner, she has assembled a creative and inventive overview of stitches and fabrics, both hand-knitted and machine-made, presenting hundreds of sumptuous ways of working with yarn, from silk thread to Shetland wool. Other books propose patterns to copy; this book uses basic patterns as points of departure, opening up endless possibilities for sophisticated knitting designs.

The book is organized by fabric types: simple knits, jacquards, fine jersey knits, interlock, open-work, and many others. It covers hand knitting, domestic machine knitting, and industrial knitting, explaining the relevant techniques and notation for each.

The author encourages the reader to be innovative and to experiment with the various techniques, drawing inspiration from the natural world and one's personal surroundings: pebbles on the sand, autumn leaves, snow sparkling in the sun, weeds and grasses bending in the wind. Every type of stitch that she describes is accompanied by enlarged photos of the textiles, detailed diagrams, and written instructions. The yarns used here are highly textural and attractive, which further encourages experimentation with yarn combinations and knitting techniques.

The book will appeal to domestic knitters, professional knit designers, textile designers, and students, and will be a source of inspiration to anyone working with or interested in knitted textiles. Over 600 color illustrations and hundreds of diagrams.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Inspired and Inspiring book.......2007-01-06

This beautiful book will launch you on flights of knitting fancy. Lush photography combines knitted pieces with the nature that inspired them. But this is not a pattern book, or a how-to volume. Grab a cup of tea and find a comfortable spot to while away a stolen hour or so with this book on those occasions when you want to keep your mind busy, not your hands. True, if you're a hand-knitter only, you won't be able to duplicate all of the stitches you see here, but that's not really the point. It's more about opening your mind to the possibilities that open up with needles and yarn.

5 out of 5 stars An in-depth exploration of knit textures........2006-05-07

This extraordinary book could keep you inspired and busy for a long time. Each page offers an array of sophisticated techniques doable either by hand or on a knitting machine. A perennial reference book and a must have for designers. Warning: not for beginners, who will get utterly lost.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2006-03-22

I loved how she connects natural objects with knitting--makes a great connection to how you can gain inspiration around you and translate it into knitting. I'm a machine knitter and this is one of the few books that properly addresses the techniques of machine knitting. For handknitters, this might be a bit disappointing if you are looking for techniques. A few times the author even says, "can't be done with hand knitting"--so be forewarned. If you don't need technique or have other books on technique this will be a great asset. I love to sit around and just look at the beautiful pictures--very inspiring.

3 out of 5 stars Inspirational - but mainly for commercial machine knitters.......2005-10-29

I purchased this book because I'm always looking for edgy ideas to develop my handknitted accessories. The photography is fabulous: melding natural elements with the fabric helps you to see possibilities.
However, the book seems to be intended for students of commercial design studios. Most of the text describes effects that can be produced using commercial (industrial?) knitting machines for knitted fabrics, including the needle setting to be used.
Some of the ideas are translatable to hand knitting, and there is a nod to this in some pages describing basic hand knit techniques.
The tone of the book is scholarly and seems at odds with the ideas and illustrations.
Overall, if you are studying commercial knitted fabric design, this is a great resource. It's of limited use for hand knit designers.

5 out of 5 stars Even the most experienced knitter will find plenty of new concepts to learn.......2005-10-07

An unusual organization by fabric types, from knits to openwork and ribbed fabric, offers the first clue that The Art Of Knitting: Inspirational Stitches, Textures And Surfaces is not your average knitter's project handbook. Another clue: over 600 color illustrations along with hundreds of diagrams to gather representative samples of hundreds of ways of working with different types of wools. Patterns serve as the point here, encouraging knitters to move beyond to experiment with techniques based on the nature of the fabric. Stitches are matched to textile properties and different yarns encourage unique yarn combinations and knitting techniques. Even the most experienced knitter will find plenty of new concepts to learn in The Art Of Knitting.

The book probably would have been a little useful had I been reading it 10 years ago. Most of the "facts" are incorrect and it speaks of the program as if it just got to the US. There is way more information on the internet about Kumon than this book offers. It really is basic stuff that the instructor tells you.

5 out of 5 stars Kumon Really Works........2006-05-14

I have had my 7 year-old child enrolled in Kumon Math and reading now for about 6 months. All I can say is that he has improved by leaps and bounds since the beginning of the school year. I know by reading some of poor reviews of the book, you would think this program is a wash. Not so! To some of the parents who have a problem with the program, I for one would like to know how much playstation time you give your kids? You see, 80% of the children in my sons program are of either Asian or Indian decent. Their parents are busy taking those kids to the library and to programs like kumon. Those parents are not allowing their kids to become victims of the modern day video game generation. Our kids are watching too much Television and video related games. They are becoming lazy and losing the drive to excel in academics. Do you know what this tells me? It tells me that it is those children whose parents are taking them to libraries to read and to Kumon to master academics, are going to become our future Scientists, Doctors, and Engineers. I will not allow my children to fall into this modern day playstation/TV trap that is taking its toll on our youth. This country is losing its competitive edge, because other countries youth is out performing our children in Math and science. That is a fact. I suggest that parents in America take a good hard look at what is going on around us and change your childs habits, in order that they may lead a successful and prosperous life during adulthood. I earned success through hard work, which is exactly what we need to teach our own children. Education and work ethic = Power. I recommend the Kumon program to any parent whose child may need some extra reinforcement in order to stay on course academically.

4 out of 5 stars A great supplement to improve math skills.......2005-06-08

I have two children both in the 5th grade enrolled in Kumon they have been going for about 7 months. They are showing slow improvement in their math skills. My daughters grades have improved from C to B. My son's grades have not improved yet, but he struggles with the math more than my daughter. Neither has moved to their grade level in math yet on the practice sheets. I believe by the end of the summer they will both be at least at grade level. I am looking forward to the day they are ahead of their grade on the practice sheets. I am going to continue because I can see that it is a good supplement to their math classes at school.

The nay sayers speak as if this is the only math they are exposed to in their school years. The children go to school everyday and are exposed to the "thinking math". The work sheets help them to have their math facts down so they can understand and work the math in school more easily without struggling with the basics. One thing about this program, it does take discipline and dedication from the parents. One more thing, I did try tutors and they really didn't help that much except to point out to me that my children did not know their math facts well enough and this effected their test taking,it would take them to long to answer the test questions which led sometimes to incomplete tests.

I have no illusions that my children will be math majors or engineers, all I want is for them to do as well as they can in math so that it doesn't drag down their grade point average or hurt them to much on their SATs in high school. I think the timing part of the program is good for test taking skills also.

(...)not send your kids to Kumon. It is the brain school and all you do is work on trivial worksheets that do not enhance your knowledge at all. It just makes you a work-a-holic, and teaches stuff by reptition. If you want a life, don't go because like my asian friends, you will not get out of it as long as your parents control you. I went there for a few days, it sucked and i did nohing but eat their goldfish snacks. yes her son got 1600, but still. Kumon is...brainwash

1 out of 5 stars Case Against Kumon.......2004-01-13

Critics of Kumon schools say they address the wrong issues. "They assume the problem in the United States is a lack of pencil-and-paper computational skills," says David Afton, a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). In reality, he says, "American students perform quite well on basic skills. Where we fall down is on reasoning and problem-solving tasks."

Kumon's heavy reliance on repetition is another sticking point with its detractors. "It's appropriate at a certain point for particular children," says Herbert Ginsburg, professor of psychology and education at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City. "But if you do not give them the basic understanding to go along with the drill, the drill becomes meaningless."

Math teacher Noriyuki Inoue, now a Ph.D. candidate in education at Columbia University, compares the Kumon method to SAT preparatory classes: "It's highly effective for getting high scores on standardized tests," says Inoue, "but students will probably see that getting a higher score is a better reward than understanding the principles and the pattern--and this is a major drawback."

BTW: I just heard that in late 2003 the Chairperson of Kumon in Japan, Hiroshi Kumon, has resigned for health reasons. I learned that he was a chain-smoker. What a bad example he set for children who undergo the Kumon program.

                  1 out of 5 stars sexist issue.......2003-10-04

What I don't understand about these Kumon publicists is why they give too much honor to Mr. Toru Kumon, the founder of their math-learning method. The learning method was germinated out of a MOTHER's love for her child -- not necessarily from a father's love. Mrs. Kumon, not happy with her son's disappointing grades in math, urged her husband, a math teacher, to tutor him. Mr. Kumon REFUSED to help his son because the former was a high school teacher, but the latter was a primary school student. But Mrs. Kumon kept nagging: "You help other children, but you won't even help your own child!" Because of this, Mr. Kumon finally realized his error and so was able to develop his learning method.

If it weren't for Mrs. Kumon, Mr. Kumon's star would never have shone. But now the sexist bosses of the Kumon Institute wouldn't allow Mrs. Kumon's star to shine -- most probably because of the pro-patriarchal customs of the Japanese. This is most ironic since more than 90% of Kumon instructors are women.

This book is totally non-inspirational for female Kumon instructors and even ordinary female teachers. It's an insult to the female sex. Besides that, it's a boring book.
