Scandinavian Design at its best.......2007-01-10
The Schiffer publications know more about glass and ceramics in Scandinavia than the Scandinavians know themselves. High class pictures, almost photographic art, very reliable references. The only slightly negative opinion at us, is the unbalanced presentation of Norwegian Glass and Ceramic design.

Customer Reviews:
I love this book.......2005-07-21
I checked this book out of my library twice then decided I wanted to have my own copy. I don't know many of the stars in the book but still found their knitting stories warming as they captured the essence of what knitting means to those addicted to it. And though the patterns are simple it shows what amazing beauty can easily be created with the wonderful yarns we have today. While I wouldn't have paid $25.00 for it, I find I can't resist it at Amazon's half price offering. I'm gathering up all kinds of different yarn at the moment to make Daryl Hannah's beautiful scarf. Mine will be black and whites.
And then I want to make Nora's scarf. Then that quirky pink and red one by Bridget. Using the pocket as a hat? My daughter will love it! I already have just the right yarn to make Julianna's......I love so many of the patterns I will definitely be getting my money's worth. The stitches are the easiest ones in knitting but the way the colors and yarn combinations are arranged adds all the style and creativity you could ask for.
Yes, the patterns are definitely beginner fare but there is a beautiful spirit in this book and that's also what I am buying.
Dumbest Knitting Book Ever..........2005-06-26
I agree that this book is a total waste. Even a beginner would find this boring! As the others said, there really are no patterns here - just knitting rows back and forth using different yarns. We mastered that in my first night of knitting class - these celebrities need to challenge themselves more! I'm no expert knitter, but even I found these "patterns" to be really, really dumb. Total waste of a book.
Great for a Beginner Like Me!.......2005-02-01
I thought this book was great! I have read all the negative reveiws below and realize they are probably from advanced knitters. If you are a beginner, like me, this is a GREAT book. It's nice to see all the different looks you can get with just the basic knit stitch. This book shows beautiful, luxurious yarns that really make a simple project look very rich. I have ordered several of the yarns shown. Most of the beginning knitter books show the same old, tacky yarn. This is refreshing!
Boring.......2005-01-05
Save yourself some money. Spend 15 minutes in your favorite bookstore, flipping through this book, then go home without it and duplicate any scarves that caught your interest (if any).
Save Your Money!.......2004-08-24
This book is the worst value for the money that I've seen in a long time. I purchased the book based on Vogue's reputation and expected to find an interesting selection of patterns and styles. Big mistake! With only a few exceptions, almost all the scarves in this book are done in garter stitch, and the only difference between them is the number of stitches used and the variety of yarns selected. If you can choose yarn you like, cast on 20 stitches, and then knit every row for 48" or so, you've got the pattern for almost every scarf in this book. What a superlative waste of money!! Don't bother.
Book Description
More stars, more scarves, and more sales!
The follow-up to Celebrity Scarves offers knitters new designs to try and personal stories to enjoy. And they'll feel good knowing that a portion of the sales go to a great cause--the Avon Foundation, the foremost non-profit agency advocating a cure for breast cancer.
Twenty more celebrity knitters, such as David Arquette (the first male featured); Dakota Fanning (of Hide and Seek fame), and Desperate Housewife Felicity Huffman, dish about the scarf patterns they love most. And every one is in pink, as a salute to the fight against breast cancer. What makes this special, beyond the projects and the donated proceeds, are the stories the contributors share: Andrea Martin, star of TV and Broadway, reveals how she learned to knit at 10 years old at the side of her grandmother, who had fled Turkey after witnessing many tragedies. Karen Allen (Raiders of the Lost Ark) presents her Kilim Cross designs, and discusses how antique rugs provide inspiration for her stitching.
Never has a knitting book been so entertaining to read, and so important to buy.

Good book for patterns, good book for the coffee table.......2007-03-14
This book has some pretty interesting paterns for scarves made by celebrities. This book also has some bio information on the people who made the scarves, and proceeds go to benefit a great cause. A lot of the yarns featured are not easily found locally, so substitutions may be required. All in all, I would recommend this book.
Book Description
First-person interpretationthe portrayal of historical characters through interactive dramatization or roleplayingis an effective, albeit controversial, method used to bring history to life at museums, historic sites, and other public venues. Stacy Roth examines the techniques of first-person interpretation to identify those that have been most effective with audiences while allowing interpreters to maintain historical fidelity.
Past into Present focuses on first-person interpretation's most challenging form: the unscripted, spontaneous, conversational approach employed in "living history" environments such as Plimoth Plantation in Massachusetts, Conner Prairie in Indiana, and Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. While acknowledging that a wide range of methods can touch audiences effectively, Roth identifies a core set of practices that combine positive communication techniques, classic interpretive philosophy, and time-tested learning theories to promote audience enjoyment, provoke thought and inquiry, convey important messages and themes, and relate to individual visitor interests. She offers numerous examples of conversation and demonstration strategies, visitor behavior profiles, and suggestions for depicting conflict and controversy, and she provides useful character development guidelines, interpretive training advice, and recommendations for adapting first-person interpretation for diverse audiences.

Great Book For Reenactors and Museum Docents.......2007-04-21
Television, movies, computers, even video games have changed the way we look at history. Recently written books on history are now in a style that gives the reader a greater understanding of what our founding father's and 19th century pioneer's daily lives were like.
Everything, it seems, is three dimensional today. Try visiting an American History museum - it's not your father's museum, that's for sure!
In her book, "Past Into Present," Ms. Roth just about covers every aspect of presenting history in all its glory and gore by using the process known as 1st person. First person brings the folks from the distant past back to life by having a re-enactor or a museum docent dress in period clothing, doing a job or a chore from the past, and speaking as if they actually ARE that long-dead person, alive again, here to share their knowlegde of times gone by. I, myself, impose a 1st person technique for my civilian impression in the 21st Michigan Civil War reenactors, and I must say that "Past into Present" truly helped me understand the importance of what I am representing while doing my impression. Through her book Ms. Roth also helped me see the pros and cons of being a 1st person living historian as well - how to stay in character, for instance, without jumping back and forth between first and third person.
From what I have seen at some re-enactments - and even at a museum - some living historians do not give the past the justice it deserves. They are the ones who should own this book as well. I've learned to give the reverence these folks from the past that we are emulating the respect they so deserve.
The writer can get a bit wordy (so can I, can't you tell?) but if you are one who is a bit more passionate about the past and would rather get deeper involved in history than the average person, then I would suggest you taking a gander at this book and read how you can become one from the past into the present at your next reenactment.
Sharing History.......2000-03-28
As a new recruit in the growing international army of Civil War reenactors, I was anxious to evolve past the usual march-and-shoot mass maneuvers into effective first-person interaction with spectators. But having never even seen a living-history interpreter, I wasn't sure what to do. Then I found Ms. Roth's delightful book on the internet! She interviewed scores of experienced interpreters at the best living-history museums in the United States and Canada to find out how they hook -- and keep -- the interests of their visitors. The result is some imaginative out-of-the-box approaches that make visitors think they're being entertained instead of educated! The fun that the interpreters obviously have with their roles is infectious -- I could hardly wait to try it! This is a MUST read for anyone who's ever thought of going to a historical reinactment as either a participant or a spectator.

Book Description
This book traces the history of Buena Vista, an estate located in the southern foothills of Puerto Rico's central mountain range. Now a popular living history museum, Buena Vista flourished in the nineteenth centuryfirst as a farm that furnished food for the city of Ponce and surrounding plantations, later as a producer of corn and cornmeal ground at the estate's water-powered mill, and finally as a coffee plantation.
Drawing on an impressive range of primary sources, Guillermo Baralt portrays the estate's history as a series of overlapping changes: from slavery to salaried labor, from primitive processing techniques to the latest in mill technology, from Spanish rule to American control, and from hard-scrabble country life to life as part of the world marketplace. Richly illustrated and written in a lively narrative style, Buena Vista paints a compelling portrait of an era, an island, a family, and an estate, bringing a period in Caribbean history to vivid life.

Buena Vista: Life and Work on a Puerto Rican Hacienda, 1833-1904.......2006-11-05
Historically, factual, fascinating, a wealth of information culturally, and a must read (required) for all Puerto Ricans, Newyoricans, and ANYONE interested in the history of the founding fathers of the New World!...I found this book, while researching the archives online at the New York Historical Society's Library. But, it only showed the original, which was written in Spanish. The history and clarity of the subject matter contained in this book is long overdue, and covered the subject spectrum 100%!
After speaking with my brother, whose first visit to Puerto Rico (at a ripe old age of 49), included a visit to 'Plantation Buena Vista,' he told me about the rich history that he saw there, and that he was totally fascinated by it! I again, researched this book online at [...], and saw, that it was redone in English, so that, I could read it!
If I were asked to contribute anything to this book, I would just say, that I would have liked it to be broader to include more chapters! Perhaps, a sequel to this book can be written! Or, maybe even, it should be made into a TV Series...muchas, Alex Haley's TV miniseries, "ROOTS!"
The ongoing saga of the Buena Vista Plantation, rich cultural history of the Vives Family and Puerto Rico after the turn of the century, is equally, and, even more, compelling a story!
Thank you Amazon for providing this book, as it filled in the facts that not being able to read comprehensively in Spanish has cost!
Excellent History Reading on Life in P.R. Hacienda.......1999-09-22
I received this book on Saturday and finished it Sunday . An excellent, detailed account on life in a Puerto Rican Hacienda. Wonderful illustrations of people of the time and details of sophisticated equipment used in those time. A true picture of how life was then. My grandfather was a farmer and worked on a plantation so this gives light to some of the stories he told me about. An excellent books for anyone that wants to know about their roots and is especially interested in the Ponce area although this was probably typical of all plantations. A must read!!!
100% must read........1999-07-01
If your really into history Colonial days you should really put your hands on this one. It takes you on a drive full of feeling to that era. Im Italian and it made me recall my grandparents village in Palermo... I give Gullermo A. Baralt an A+
Excellent.......1999-06-29
(From Planeta journal): This new English-language translation of an established Caribbean classic traces the history of the Buena Vista estate in the foothills of Puerto Rico's central mountain range. Now a living history museum, Buena Vista gained its initial success producing food for the town of Ponce, proving that raising crops for local consumption could be as profitable as sugar or coffee for export. The text spans almost a century -- a time in which slavery ended and technology expanded at a phenomenal rate. This is an exceptional book, one that any visitor to Puerto Rico should read before making an obligatory visit to the island's Living Museum of Art and Science.

Book Description
Top Secret is definitely not the right word for the International Spy Museumits launch in 2002 made news and it has been high-profile ever since, with attendance growing by leaps and bounds. The International Spy Museum Handbook of Practical Spying has already been declassified to the delight of those in the need-to-know. Now, following up on that success, here's an illustrated biographical who's who of spydom from biblical days to recent times. I Lie for a Living is a regular rogue's gallery of history's most accomplished intriguers and intelligence operatives, famous and infamous alike.
It's amazing how colorful some of these characters are, like 16th century playwright, brawler and secret agent Christopher Marlow or Virginia Hall and Josephine Baker, femmes fatales both. Organized into ten thematic chapters, this light-hearted but clear-eyed look at lone-wolf moles, double agents, and intricate triple-crosses unmasks a wide-ranging roster from covert patriots whose unheralded heroism sometimes cost them their lives to mercenary traitors for sale to the highest bidder, like Benedict Arnold or Aldrich Ames.
It's a for-your-eyes-only kind of book, so bewareif you don't watch your back it's a sure bet someone will be reading it over your shoulder.

The
Random House Health and Medicine Dictionary is perfect for anyone in need of a comprehensive, small-format dictionary that provides the most current vocabulary in health and medicine.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2003-01-06
Because of its small size, this dictionary is not, and can't be, as comprehensive as large dictionaries. However, it does surprisingly manage to define the vast majority of words that even medical students/professionals will encounter. Moreover, the definitions are clear and concise with good technical depth, but still reasonably understandable for laymen. The KEY ADVANTAGE of this dictionary is that it is the smallest medical dictionary I've found, and the only one that can truly be called "portable." I frequently carry my copy with me. Finally, at this price, it's a steal.
