The book covers the process of creating mokume-gane from start to finish in a clear, informative manner. Having never used this technique before, I used this book as a guide and was very successful the first time. In addition to information on fusion/diffusion, forging, patterning and patination, the photographs of finished pieces and samples are helpful in displaying the effects of various materials, patterns and finishing techniques (some quite surprising). Details about different material combinations and their working properties are also included. I have no experience with other books on this topic to compare to, but for now this book seems to be the only one I will need to continue using this technique. My only criticism is that the chapter order could have a better arrangement.

Comprehensive.......2005-03-26

Covers a number of topics that are only briefly alluded to in Midgett's book. Dr Ferguson also uses a different process than the ones covered in Midgett's book. He includes a detailed schematic of the kiln and press apparatus. Using this process, he is able to combine a number of materials not readily available to people just using the common processes.

Short and concise, for the most part. The section of pagination is worth the cost of the book itself. Covers a lot of material that is usually not all available in one place. The color plates in the appendices really show the range and variation possible.

Newer, improved version available.......2005-12-20

This book is out of print and hard to find (although I managed to get a copy through my local library). It teaches the basic techniques of making diffusion bonded mokume gane, including an excellent section on building your own kiln on the cheap. However, basically everything in it has been incorporated into a second, improved version called "Mokume Gane - A Comprehensive Study" (ISBN: 0965165078), which also contains a large number of color photographs. Don't spend time or money on "Mokume Gane in the Small Shop", go straight for "Mokume Gane - A Comprehensive Study" instead.

excellent step by step instructions for any metalsmith........1998-07-21

I really enjoyed the book it was clearly written in laymans terms. Steve Midgett is a very skilled artist and he makes Mokume-Gane look easy although it is a very dificult process. I enjoyed the pictures which he included in the book which make it almost fool proof. A must have for any serious jewerly student or fanatic. I am building the kiln this week for a class project which he described in the book. Anyone can learn this process with some time and patience.

Practical, beautifully illustrated, a must-have!.......2001-11-14

This book is the 2nd book by the author on the subject (the 1st one is out of print.) It's widely recognized as the ultimate source of information on how to make mokume gane.

Mokume gane is a traditional Japanese metalsmithing technique by which sheets of different metals - generally copper, silver, gold, and alloys of those - are stacked and welded together. This results in a piece of metal that displays a woodgrain-like pattern that shows the different metals' colors.

This book focuses on the different techniques to make mokume gane. It addresses the 2 usual methods, liquid and solid bonding, and also deals with more complex and high tech methods. One of the best feature is an entire chapter on a great low cost method. Not only does it address the methods to make the raw billets, it also talks about each technique that can be used to reveal the internal pattern.

The book is maybe 50% to 75% written by Midgett himself, but he has not hesitated in leaving others talk about different techniques. This results in a text that addresses each area with great confidence.

The book is enriched with many photographies, both step by step illustrations of techniques as well as examples of art works, many of them trully stuning. Again, Mr. Midgett gave a lot of rooms for other contributing artists to display their work.

The last chapter is a series of projects, increasing in difficulty, profusely illustrated with clear pictures.

All and all, one of the best "how to" book I've ever purchased. Complete, clear, and yet not boring at all. Highly recommended!

The projects in the book are good, but not difficult. This book is best for those who are not real experienced in working with origami, or don't want a challenge.

Great Teaching Tool.......2000-12-22

I love this book! I am in Jewish education, but these are stories that both traditions share. Younger kids watch fascinated as the story unfolds and the paper folds. Older kids can fold along with the storyteller. I will often give the directions to the older kids so they can tell the story again with the folding and teach others. Somehow the folding really adds a dimension to the children's listening and thinking about the story--it's not just a gimmick. But it is also a great gimmick! One can customize the foldings to other stories not given in this book, but I wish the author would come out with another book of folding stories. I am buying this book even as I write this review, because I don't like to depend on my kids' day school library for it--I must have it for my own. I'm also buying the holiday book, though I suspect it's for Christian holidays, but I might be able to customize the stories, and I learn a lot just from the techniques the author describes.
