REVIEW: This large, softbound volume is one of the best of its type on the market today. Well illustrated, and with only two estimated values - for excellent and very good condition arms - the reader has at least a ballpark idea of what a rifle, shotgun, or handgun is worth. Collectors, dealers, and arms students in general should find this book a worthwhile investment and useful reference.

Save Your Money.......2000-06-08
I suspect that this book was very good - once upon a time. And therein lies the problem. It appears that the authors have not adequately updated the book, or, simply did a very poor job with the minor updating they did attempt.
The book does have pictures of almost every gun it identifies, which is not true of most other similar type books.
If you have expectations that your reference book should be reliable and current, then save your money and buy "Bluebook of Gun Values" or a similar book from Amazon.com

Book Description
Cristina Ortega is the granddaughter of Juan Melquiades Ortega, a master weaver of northern New Mexico's Chimayó Valley. Chimayó's roots are in early Spanish Colonial times and has long been famous for its unique weavings.
Juan M. Ortega was taught to weave by his father in the early days when weavers sheared their own sheep and spun and dyed the wool for their blankets. El Tejedor (The Weaver) continued weaving until he was one hundred years old, when his eyesight failed him.
In The Eyes of the Weaver, Cristina shares her memories of visits when she was ten years old with Grandpa in the village of Chimayó, where he taught her how to weave. She also recalls how Grandma helped her husband choose color combinations for his Chimayó blankets. It was during these visits that Cristina learned how important it is for a child to listen to and learn from his or her relatives.
Some of Juan M. Ortega's weavings and tools of the trade have been included in the exhibit, "American Encounters," at the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, D.C.
Reading level: 10 years and up
Cristina Ortega shares with children her memories of visits with her grandfather who taught her how to weave when she was ten years old.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Weaving of Story , Culture, and Family History.......2002-07-02
"Los Ojos del Tejedor: The Eyes of the Weaver" is a wonderful regional story based on the author's youth. She is a descendent of the Ortega family of Chimayo. The Ortega family has been weaving in the small, rural community of Chimayo for more than eight generations and the quality of their rugs and blankets is well known. They own a store in Chimayo and in several other locations where their Hispanic style rugs and blankets are sold in many sizes. Chimayo is a mountain community north of Santa Fe best known for the Santuario de Chimayo, an old adobe church pilgrims flock to for its miracles of healing and tourists visit as a fine, historical example of New Mexico adobe churches.
This book beautifully describes Hispanic traditions and the importance of teaching the children these skills. Ten year old Cristina loves going to her grandparents' house, but she is particularly nervous about this trip. She knows that she is going to spend a week there to learn how to weave and is filled with anxiety over weaving as well as her grandfather, and she doesn't speak Spanish as well as she'd like. Her mother suggests that her cousin, who speaks better Spanish, should join her and their grandparents, and that makes Cristina feel more confident about her visit.
This delightful book moves beyond learning to weave on the loom. Cristina weaves in her own memories of Hispanic culture through other activities during this visit. Spanish words and phrases are sprinkled as regional seasoning, adding depth to the flavor of her story. A glossary of these words is found at the back to help non-Spanish speakers navigate their way through this book. Phrases are translated in the text of the book. In addition to stumbling with her grandfather's Spanish, she also picks regional vegetables from the garden and cooks traditional New Mexican foods, which also contributes to the fullness of the text.
The illustrations add a lot to the text. They are done in a "painterly" syle common among the works of the early Taos painters, supporting both the regional and historic feel of this book. The book does a beautiful and complete job of representing the New Mexico Hispanic culture and is a must for anyone who wants to learn more about this subject. But in addition to the social studies lesson, this book is about families and how they relate to one another. It is a personal story about a child's belonging to her family and rising up to their expectations with love and compassion.

A Gift For Anyone Treating or Struggling With Addiction.......2001-01-19
Although published 15 years ago, this beautifully crafted and wonderfully written volume remains on the cutting edge of the its field. With addiction reaching epidemic proportions and striking younger and younger victims its message is more important than ever. Although their focus is primarily on alcoholism, Bepko's and Kresten's ideas apply to any brand of addiction (e.g., cocaine, marijuana, gambling, depting, compulsive over-eating etc.). The authors insights into the ways that over- and under-functioning in families and relationships provide alcohol a welcome mat into peoples homes and lives has become a corner stone of sound treatment and thinking in the profession. After putting it down readers will not only have learned a great deal about addiction--the book's subject matter--but will also have more understanding, and deep respect, for family therapy--the author's mode of inquiry. This is a must read for professionals, which includes anyone who sees famlies and couples or men and women in their practice (regardless of the problems their clients are struggling with). However, because of the author's accessible and "user friendly" style anyone who has had to cope with these issues in their own life, or the life of someone they love, will benefit from its wisdom.--Jonathan Diamond, author Narrative Means to Sober Ends.
Psychology of alcoholic families - good read for all!.......2000-04-28
This is one of those psychology books that may not describe any problem *your* family, but it tackles problems that will inevitably crop up in everyone's extended families, friends, coworkers, or lovers. It is a must-read for anyone that has had problem drinking in their family (going back to the grandparents) or dated anyone with problem drinking in their family, which means everyone should read it! This is the sort of information that must be more widely known to build healthier families and communities.
The Responsibility Trap lets the reader understand such seemingly puzzzling questions as why do some men have such rage towards women? And why are so many successful "together" women so desperately attracted to one dangerous loser after another?
The Responsibility Trap is an engrossing description of how alcoholism effects the psychology of entire families. Although the book is very readable and uses a minimum of jargon, it is not a pop-pschology book, but a serious and thorough treatment of the subject. It endorses AA without rehashing the AA program. The serious focus of the book is shown by the short chapter directed towards counsellors about professional ethics.
This book is only partly about addiction. It is mainly about the intergenerational patterns of alcoholism, power, and loss that drive people to SEEK alcoholic marriages. It also treats the alcoholic as part of a family unit that had usually had problems that led to alcoholism, and these problems remain after the drinking stops. A major focus of the book is the challenges that face families that remain after drinking stops, especially the "coalcoholic" (codependent) spouse that can't accept a sober partner.
Because the book explains the alcoholic family's obsesssion with power and control ("overfunctioning" or "overresponsibility"), the transmission of poisonous attitudes from parent to child, and the unresolved problems that remain after sobriety, readers will also begin to see startlingly clear examples of alocholic behaviors in families where the problem drinking ended years earlier.
The book also describes way children are molded by the alcoholic family to be overreponsible (calm, efficient, but lonely and filled with self doubt) or underresponsible (filled with rage, demanding constant care and praise, but filled with violent resentment towards anyone that helps them). As adults, overfunctioning and underfunctioning people feel an instant chemistry, but their relationship becomes an abusive dance with death that the seemingly "healthy" partner can't walk away from. A friend described this book as a frighteningly accurate account of their experiences, and the book provided more clear insights than they had obtained from years of counselling.

Book Description
Corporate power has a huge impact on the rights and privileges of individuals -- as workers, consumers, and citizens. This book explores how the myth of individualism reinforces corporate power by making people perceive themselves as having choices, when in fact most peoples' options are very limited.
Perelman describes the manufacture of unhappiness - the continual generation of dissatisfaction with products people are encouraged to purchase and quickly discard - and the complex techniques corporations employ to avoid responsibility and accountability to their workers, consumers and the environment. He outlines ways in which individuals can surpass individualism and instead work together to check the growing power of corporations.
While other books have surveyed the corporate landscape, or decried modern consumerism, Perelman, a professor of economics, places these ideas within a proper economic and historical context. He explores the limits of corporate accountability and responsibility, and investigates the relation between a wide range of phenomena such as food, fear and terrorism.
Highly readable, Manufacturing Discontent will appeal to anyone with an interest in the way society works - and what really determines the rights of individuals in a corporate society.
Customer Reviews:
The illusory freedom of consumer choice.......2006-11-26
"Manufacturing Discontent" by Michael Perelman is a thoughtful study and analysis of corporate power. Mr. Perelman deconstructs the myth of individualism and consumer sovereignty to reveal how corporations exploit workers and material resources for profit. Written with passion and intelligence, this highly readable text should appeal to everyone interested in gaining a greater understanding of the interrelationship between corporate influence and individual powerlessness.
Mr. Perelman explains how corporations in the U.S. enjoy legal standing as individuals but can use their immortality and deep financial resources to extend control over government, thereby engendering laws that mostly frees them of the burden of public accountability. According to Mr. Perelman, the illusory freedom of individual consumer choice is a poor substitute for economic and political power; the author points out that while corporations enjoy free speech rights and access to a sympathetic media, governments have done little to protect worker and consumer rights. Interestingly, Mr. Perleman attributes the inflated cost of material goods with increased corporate marketing and advertising budgets while alerting us to the growing dissatisfaction of individuals who pay dearly for their addiction to consumerism.
Mr. Perelman discusses how business risk has shifted from corporations to individuals. We learn that large international banks are usually backed up by their host governments to help shield bankers from loan losses. Structural adjustment policies are often imposed upon debtor nations, who in turn extract wage concessions from workers in order to secure repayment. Mr. Perelman goes on to explain how the airline, asbestos, biotech, nuclear and other industries have benefited from government largesse while worker's rights and social benefits have been cut. Overall, the author succeeds in illustrating how a peculiar form of socialism prevails for the corporate sector while a brutish sink-or-swim individualism has become the lot of the poor.
Mr. Perelman is also perceptive in his unmasking of how fear has been used to cow the public into unquestionably accepting corporate policy. From the Cold War's fear of communism to the fear of terrorism today, the media often prepares the way for citizens to vote for politicians who advocate massive funding of dubious defense projects or to support policies that protect corporate interests in general. Mr. Perelman critiques the paucity of investigative journalism and editorial independence, submitting that the public cannot fulfill its citizenship role without access to unbiased information. However, the author remains hopeful that individuals may be able to collectively assert their democratic rights; he reasons that people can not forever tolerate a corporate agenda that threatens the destruction of human creativity and the environment.
I highly recommend this excellent book to everyone.

Book Description
The Debt Trap is a road map to help you avoid life's potential financial pitfalls. It delves into the historical, social, moral and economic reasons why so many Americans are in debt. It is preventative, not curative, in its approach. It teaches by exploring the mistakes of others in the areas of relationships, desires, spending and saving habits and values. It correlates how the breakdown of traditional values has created a society in which instant gratification, selfishness, and victimization has led to the disintegration of religion, family and love of country, while also destroying financial stability.

This book is a wonderfull book that teaches how life choices affect your financial future. The chapters are well written and easy to read. The author gives plenty of examples of how people get themselves into debt and how they can avoid getting into debt by learning from other peoples' mistakes.
