Continuing a doll legacy............2007-06-14
I own all of the Patsy Moyer Doll Identification & Value books, and I am never disappointed. The photos are always so wonderful, and the information very helpful ...(especially when Patsy identifies the more obscure collectible dolls).
Also,the all the Moyer books are printed on quality paper, etc...
As any Moyer fan will tell you, once you buy one volume of Patsy's books, you will want to go back and buy ALL of her other volumes!
There are so many dolls out there, that truly, an author would need to compile all the information in many (many) volumes,-- which is exactly that Patsy has done, throughout her career.
By the way, Patricia R. Smith was the original author to have started the trend in compiling doll information into many encyclopedic hardback "Volumes" (except that Patricia called her books "SERIES" rather than "VOLUMES"). Infact, I believe that Patricia Smith started her doll encyclopedias way back in the 1970's!
Patricia Smith's very first "Series" are now hard to find , since they've been out-of-print for so long. (I was able to find all of Patricia Smith's early doll Series at a second-hand bookstore, many years ago).
Anyhow, after Patricia Smith retired, that's when Patsy Moyer took over the legacy (ie: to place all the doll information into encyclopedic volumes).
I believe that Patsy Moyer has done an outstanding job, since Patricia Smith has since left us, and I'm sure it was hard to fill Patricia Smith's shoes.
Pretty pictures, but..........2000-03-05
This beautiful hard-cover makes a very nice coffee table book, but I don't recommend it for someone looking to do any in-depth doll research. The pictures are lovely, but details are scant. In most cases, the doll's height measurements, characteristics, year of production, etc., are not even listed. She also throws in quite a few new artist dolls and 70's fashion dolls which don't seem to fit in with the rest of the book and are of little interest to vintage doll collectors.

This 303 page hard cover 3rd edition identification and value guide contains nearly 800 large full color photos of every type of modern collectible doll from advertising dolls, Alexander, Barbie, to cloth, comic, Effanbee, hard plastic, Hasbro, Mattel, Storybook, etc., etc. 45 chapters of dolls in all. Each chapter provides an overview of the dolls and what to look for in that type of doll. Estimated values are shown. The pictures are superb- almost like seeing the dolls themselves. With its heavy lifetime laminated cover, the book weighs 3 pounds !! It's a keeper.

As good as it gets for identifying Collectible dolls!.......1998-12-04
Even if you already have Volume one of this book, this book is still wonderful! Each page has beautifully detailed colored pictures of Modern dolls- Alexander, Ideal, Mattel, Effanbee, etc.. Lots of popular dolls, with very few repeats from the first edition. If you sell dolls- or collect them- you will not be disappointed with this book.

This is another excellent entry in a series of very useful books. Good basic information on a variety of doll makers, good illustrations. I like the range of values given for dolls depending on the condition, since not all dolls are mint, and there can be an enormous difference between fair conditon and excellent.

Patsy Moyer's Doll Values provides a comprehensive fourth edition guide to doll values of the most collectible and commonly collected makers and brands. While arrangement of the book by maker and brand necessitate knowing this information for quick consultation, the many color photos aid immensely in making the identification.

This is a good general guide for doll collectors. I wish the price guide section of the book was a little tighten, two much of a difference between high and low values. Another good reference guide I purchased recently was Composition and Wood Dolls & Toys by Michele Karl. Check that one out too.

The book is a joy to look at. The back of the volume contains a complete 1,700 doll name page index for ready reference. Dolls are grouped by manufacturer. Ms. Moyer's book is an outstanding doll reference. She sets the current prices in ranges, from played with to mint, a feature that is unavailable in many doll price guides. This is my "bible" for buying and selling dolls.

This is the best book for all around collectors I have found. I have been getting this book every year. My only problem is: the 12th edition, published March 1996 is the last one I have been able to find. Please Help! Have they stopped publishing these books? They are the greatest...

We adults so often overreact to children's "violent" play, but as a teacher and sometime child advocate I see how much richer and more complicated their make-believe is than what we so easily pigeonhole as "violence." Vivian Gussin Paley makes clear what such fantasy means to children, and why we should understand and participate in it, in this wonderfully readable book!

This book takes a thoughtful look at how a group of kindergarten children act out in their play the violent thoughts and worries that they have. It is also about how their teacher struggles with the question of how best to help them deal with their violent play, which she finds quite upsetting. It is not preachy book, much less a quick fix on violence in America. But if you are a kindergarten teacher or a parent of kindergartener you will end up seeing your children's play in a whole new way.
