Great read, but misleading title.......2006-01-07

This is a nice compilation of articles and auction commentary by Keith Martin and Ferrari gurus Michael Sheehan and Steve Ahlgrim, and not surprisingly it's a fun read. Especially worthwhile are candid commentaries by Sheehan and Ahlgrim on Ferrari's on which you will always lose money, and models to seek out or avoid entirely. I was glad to see actual, useful assertions about good versus bad models, and the rating guide in the back is probably worth the price of the book, even if the prices are now a couple years old. If you're new to Ferrari's and want a taste of what's available, and at what cost, this book is also fairly helpful.

But... the auction commentary on specific cars is a bit of a letdown. It may be interesting to know that a particular 512BB realized such-and-such a price despite having a mouse-nibbled wiring harness, but realistically a few pages on what to look for in a 512BB would have been a more direct and helpful approach. Similarly, not many people are stuck deciding between a seven-figure 250GTO and a $30K 1980s 308, so the broad scope of the book limits its usefulness. We never learn WHY you would want a Colombo-designed front-engine V-12 versus an '80s Testarossa with the flat 12. Much of the information is there, if you can hunt it down. But it could stand to be pulled into a format that a well-heeled neophyte could digest.

Maybe the biggest problem is the title, which created expectations that the book didn't meet. Don't get me wrong -- I enjoyed reading this and hearing experts' opinions on what people paid for specific Ferrari's. But as someone who owns one - and can't afford a whole stable-full - I didn't benefit as much from this as I had hoped. Also, I can't help but think that someone who is set on collecting $500,000+ cars would need a real consultation with the writers. This book is more of a toe-dip into the ocean of Ferrari lore that awaits someone ready to take the plunge. (And it is a plunge, albeit an exhilarating one that every car enthusiast should take as circumstances permit.)

If you want a great evening read, where you can jump between articles, go for it.

Minor, slightly relevant quibble: The binding fell apart when I opened the book, due to dried adhesive. Maybe it's genuine Italian glue?

Don;t buy a Ferrari without this.......2005-10-14

This is the only book I have found that, in excruciating detail, runs through the many pitfalls, mostly financial, that can occur to an enthusiast purchasing a depreciated Ferrari. The book, though attributed to a single author, is actually a collection of short magazine articles written by several contributors, and gives a reasonably broad set of views on the windfalls and pratfalls of dealing in this market. Though sympathetic to the marque and the pleasures of ownership, the collective authors lead one to the conclusion that Ferrari ownership is not for people unwilling to spend thousands of dollars on, say, a periodic valve adjustment. Another view that is commmon among the collective authors is that ownership of depreciated (and hopefully future appreciating) Ferraris is not about everyday driving, but is about the pleasure of savoring the fact of ownership, and an occasional drive into town on a sunny weekend afternoon. Anything more is such a risk to the value of the car that only persons having very large financial resources to devote to hobby cars would actually accumulate substantial miles on such a vehicle.
Properly sobered by this information, somebody like me can decide to invest in one of these cars fully ready for the likely financial consequences of the decision.

Excellent guide on collecting Ferrari.......2005-07-23

Found the book very entertaining. I am an owner of a 73 Daytona and read with interest Keith Martin's review of this car and other collectible Ferraris. The only downside is that this book was published in 2004 and some of his articles are already somewhat dated.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in collecting Ferrari. I plan to pass the book on to my mechanic.

don't buy a used ferrari until you read this book.......2005-02-08

i've read keith martin's "market" every week in autoweek magazine since 1994. i came across this book on line and have to say as a car enthusiast, as a ferrari enthusiast, this is a must have for any pontential used ferrari owner. if you can afford the $75,000 markup on a $170,000 ferrari modena, then this book is not for you. however, if you are like the remainding 99.9% of us, buy this book. it's a perfect reference guide wether you are looking for a $20,000 mondial or a $200,000 250 SWB.

Even with my several years of experience wrapping wire I found the instructions incomplete and confusing. Definitely not a book for a novice but possibly a good reference book. Beautifully illustrated though. I got some great ideas for displaying my jewelry.

I am a complete beginner and found this book very helpful. The instructions are easy to follow, the pictures vivid and beautiful, and the finished jewelry is lovely. There are lots of different projects to make for every level. I highly recommend this book.

This book follows Heidi's Simply Beautiful Beading but it stands on its own by showing techniques to make the projects shown. There are well-defined photographs of necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and fashion accessories. None of the projects are particularly difficult to make once you know the basic techniques, briefly shown at the front of the book.

I've recently discovered Heidi Boyd's bead books. I love her ideas and instructions. They aren't "way out there" but are original, simple designs and the instructions are very visual and easy to follow.

This is a beautiful book. Almost every project in it was something I would want to make, and they all are in the range of beginner/intermediate in complexity. Instructions are clear and easy to follow with excellent pictures. A great purchase.

This is an okay book if you looking to bead whimsy costume jewelry for young girls. Actually some of these projects could be done with young adults. There are a lot of illusion style projects. Just was not for me.

I Like this book for its Simple.it is easy to make the projects ,not real expensive to get the materials or one probably already has them on hand..and one can incorperate the projects or parts of them in any of jewerly/beading/or polymer clay pieces..I wouldnt recommend this book for a real Intermediate or advanced jewerly maker..its for people like myself..or my daugther who are new to this craft and want to have some trendy pieces to wear and or sell...it has more ideas to me than patterns ill follow step by step,And most important the pics are wonderful....Mrs.C

Readable, implementable, but not always 100% on the mark.......1999-03-02

I translated Dr. Chapman's book into Dutch last year, and although not a practising Christian, I found what he wrote to be very recognisable. He has a gentle humour, which makes the lessons he is trying to teach us more enjoyable. He does not shy away from acknowledging his own errors, which makes it more easy to acknowledge our own, if only to ourselves. I was also pleasantly surprised about how much emphasis is given to the MAN supporting and serving the WIFE. Many church-goers would have us believe it should only be the wife supporting the husband. However, I did find that some of the arguments in the book were a bit circular, or plain "wrong". One example is where the son was given a parking ticket and when called upon to explain, he said that he did not want to lie about living in a particular area... and preferred to get a ticket. I thought really that this was substituting one wrong for another, and hardly merits a compliment... which the son did get, for being honest... rather than a wrong-parker. Another example is the "unconditional love" we are expected to give each other. There, occasionally, unconditional is not quite as unconditional as it perhaps could be. Anyway, if you feel you'd like to change something in your family life, it might well help, even though it requires quite an effort from all in the family. It's not a cure-all, and if your partner is not interested in the idea, this book may not all the good it can do... but it won't hurt to try!!!

Finally some do's instead of don'ts........1998-12-05

Dr. Chapman has been very gracious to make his own family vulnerable to us that we might gain wisdom and insight we were not given by our own family. We have used this book as a study with another couple and have received great hope through the very practicle principles we've learned. A functional family is achievable for any of us regardless of where we've come from. This book has been a wonderful resource in helping us be the spouse and parent we desire to be. The message is very biblical, but not overwhelmingly spiritual. It would be a great resource for anyone interested in their family health. Let us know what you think.

5 Stiches to Heal the War Torn Family.......1997-12-25

"Five Signs of a Functional Family" is one of those books that as you read through it, you think, "Aaaaw. He just verbalized what I couldn't for sometime now."
One of the interesting points he makes at the very beginning is that when a new bank teller is learning to distinguish a real bill from a fake one, they carefully study the real one. That's what he's done in the book. He spends time teaching the principles that somehow our Grandparents missed or missed passing down.
I think eventually the principles he lays out, (Attitude of service, intimacy between husband & wife, father as loving leader...) will be the ones that "glue" the family back together again. They are not presented as quick fixes, but as an answer for those who want to enrich their family.
His principals will work for the non-religious as well as the religious. Not "preachy."
Well written.
