Anna Miller, in her recently updated version (9-99) of "The Illustrated Guide to Jewelry Appraising", gives a novice or a professional some expert information in this edition. The concepts and principles section alone is worth the price of the book, but her book also covers everthing from making the "correct identification" to tips on the appraisal document itself. Also included is supplemental info. on antique jewelry, estimating values and appraisal narrative, plus weight estimation formulas for unusual diamond cuts. I would suggest her book to anyone with an interest in appraising or anyone who has the need to understand the process of jewelry evaluation.

Beautiful study of birds.......2004-02-18
This book has several beautiful study of birds. The photographs of her own work are truly amazing. The bald eagle, in particular, looks totally alive with a malevolent glint in it's eye. I really loved the egret with wispy white feathers that seemed to be blowing in the wind. The book includes a generous example of Helen's own embroidery that are not part of the classes. These, I think, are the best examples of what is possible. The main part of the book consists of 5 master classes that walks one through the step by step construction of the projects. However, her master classes looked way too complex for me. Instead I incorporate her method into my own design of a small bird and a flower. She explains her method, opus plunarium -- or layers of feathers used to create the illusion of depth, body, and movement, in the technique section at the back of the book. This method was especially convincing and life-like when used on the small bird, and very surprisingly, not too difficult to realize, even for me! I think Helen used mostly thick, flat, Japanese style silk threads (not silk floss, not twisted silk). Her work has a super-glossy look. These types of threads are not easy to find in the U.S. I purchases YLI silk twisted floss from Needlework.com. These produced matter, semi-glossy results, which I was quite happy with. The YLI silk floss came in 6 twisted stands, where each strand seemed to be about 1/2 the thickness of a stranded, twisted, cotton DMC floss. I would highly recommend Ms. Stevens' Embroidered Birds for your library. The pictures are lovely, and the technique will add wings to your embroidery.

Small is Beautiful and Less is More...........2007-07-14
As a member of the Small House Society I love this book. The houses are small and to the point without all the clutter some small houses tend to have. And as the title says its Compact Houses: Architecture for the Environment. And in an era of McMansions its so refreshing to see small homes that use small lots to make the best use of the land and provide for the most open and airy feeling home. Or for those who like myself love the idea of a 500-800 square foot home in an open field that is environmentally sound but also simple and minimalist this is a great book.

I enjoyed the wide variety of projects presented. I'm a visual person, so thought there could have been more photos per home to orientate oneself with the accompanying floor plans.
Overall, I return to this book (amongst others of its genre in my collection) because of the celebration of small project design.
This is not for those who dislike modern, minimilistic elevations.

Makes Me Want to Go Build a New House.......2006-03-25
I review a lot of architecture books, and this one more than most makes me want to go out and build a new house. The subject of the book is small houses. It consists of pictures and the story of some fifty houses, all of which are less than 1,300 square feet. Many of them are much less than 1,300 feet, indeed down into the 300-400 square foot size.
I live in a small house -- 900 square feet or so -- that's about a hundred years old. But compared to the layout, the beauty the simplicity of design, mine's a dump. I'm getting the urge to go visit a realtor friend. One thing about these houses is that many of them are on what would be considered hard to build on lots. And such lots tend to be cheap. There's a new architect in town that's fresh out of school and may have more originality than the older guys. Maybe if I give her this book, with a few houses marked. Hmmmmm!
One thing I didn't like, most of the bed rooms are on the second floor. I was in a house once that had a fire. The amount of smoke generated in just a minute or two was incredible. I don't want a bed room upstairs, if necessary I want to be able to close the door to keep the smoke out and get out through a wondow or emergency door.
Other than that, this is a great idea book. The pictures are beautiful. There's not as much detail as I would like, but adding detail would have to mean either fewer houses or bigger book, so I guess it's a nice balance.

This is a quite good book dealing with compact houses. I'm not totally satisfied because some of the houses represented are more an architectural exercise than houses in which living. However really good photos, nice ideas and a good rating from the quality-cost point of view.

Plenty of interior design books focus on large spaces and soaring interior structural designs; but much fewer tackle the bigger challenge of working with a very small or compact interior space - and that's where the lovely COMPACT INTERIORS comes to the rescue. This book can make you think those plain white walls in your rental are your best friend! Another reviewer complained about the white-on-white color schemes found throughout "Pure Style", but this misrepresents the book. "Pure Style" uses bright and light color schemes, with sunny yellows, sage greens, cool blues and soft lavenders on the soft furnishings, and various shades of white on the tables and cupboards featured, usually in a shade that matches the walls. This technique keeps the space feeling as bright and spacious as possible. Light colored woods are also used in many examples. In addition, this book offers some detailed advice on choosing things like dishes, rugs and linens to create a clean and fresh look, which most other DIY interior decorating books don't cover.
"Pure Style" includes DIY instructions for a variety of simple projects which makes it a great reference for renters on a budget.

I EXPECTED A FULL SIZED HARD BACK BOOK ABOUT INTERIOR DESIGN. INSTEAD I RECEIVED A VERY SMALL PAPER BACK ABOUT THE SIZE OF A BIRTHDAY CARD. THE PICTURES ARE PRETTY, BUT MOST FALL INTO THE FOLD WHERE THE PAGES ARE JOINED. USELESS AS AN ADDITION TO A COLLECTION OF DESIGN BOOKS. ABSURD WASTE OF TIME AND PAPER.

This book is like a breath of fresh air for anyone interested in decorating in an inexpensive, personal, and eclectic fashion. The photos are beautiful and the text very informative and inspirational. Following the guidelines provided will result in a beautiful, satisfying, and unique living environment. Recommended!
Beautiful pictures, low on content.......2000-05-12
If you want to decorate a lot with white on white, there are some great pictures to give you great ideas in this book. Although she mentions color and pretends to emphasize its importance in your home decor, nearly all her pictures are so devoid of color you might mistake it for an old-time hospital.
I was disappointed in the text content because it merely tells us things any homeowner already knows. I learned nothing new from this book. If you're looking for suggestions on style, I'd recommend the Shabby Chic series by Rachel Ashwell. If you're looking for suggestions on color, I'd recommend Donald Kaufman's books on interior color. This one is a waste of money.

If I were only allowed one decorating book, this would be it. Practical ideas for every decorating style. From bathrooms to colour schemes, vignettes to window treatments there are useful and affordable ideas everyone can use. A must have!

Dealing with couples exhibiting different backgrounds and attitudes towards money, and finances in general, is a challenge. Olivia Mellan has developed a strategy and a book that gauges people's money styles and addresses the need to recognize and how to adapt to each other's differences. I found this an important, basic tool that needed to be in my library, and in my toolkit as an fee-only financial advisor who works with couples.

maybe I'm the only one who didn't like it, but..........2002-04-29
I find Mellan's categorization of people as "money monks"; hoarders, avoiders, etc. to be somewhat simplistic. At different times, I have fit into several of these categories (and still do). I don't like advice from an author who seems intent on making me fit her theory.
There is commonsense advice in here on money and relationships but I was so irritated at the author's tone, which struck me as somewhat patronizing, that I didn't benefit from any of it.
