Dated but still useful.......2006-11-21
Mike Dunbar has probably had more to do with the revival of hand made Windsor chairs using traditional tools and techniques than any other person in the U.S. and his book remains the best single guide to making such a chair. I purchased a copy eleven and a half years ago when I took my first class with Mike and when his book was still in print. I have never regretted the fifteen or twenty dollars it cost. Nonetheless it needs to be thoroughly revised and updated. Even Mike admits there are some serious errors in the book, and some of the techniques he and his students have developed since the book was first published will yield a better chair with considerably less effort. My advice would be to spend the six or seven hundred dollars to take one of his classes plus the cost of meals and a motel room for five days, take copious class notes, and then buy the book as a good reference work for subsequent chairs.
Make a Windsor Chair , Dunbar.......2001-07-09
Excellent book dealing ONLY with the construction of the Windor chair. Dunbar takes the reader through the selection and riving of wood, adzing of the seat and turning of the chair legs, through to the finished construction of the chair. Dunbar also explains the construction of a steaming setup and jigs for the bending of wood(s). Dunbar runs a school on the making of Windors and this would be the textbook students use to learn Dunbar's methods. A "can't miss, no regrets" purchase.
Clear, Concise, & to the point.......1999-12-08
I not only have this book, I have made a chair in Mike's workshop in New Hampshire. Mike has been instrumental both through his writings and teachings in the recent revival of interest in the making of Windsor chairs by hand much as they were made hundreds of years ago. His book is my definitive resource for questions about Windsor chair construction when I am working in my shop. In this day and age where most of our furniture is mass produced by machines using wood composites and other man made materials it is refreshing to see how fine furniture was once (and in certain places still is) crafted directly from the forest with nothing but hand tools and the skilled hands of the chairwright

Country Houses of Holland.......2001-01-18
This is not just a book about windmills. We think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the wide range of Holland's interiors, from rustic to refined, classic to avant-garde. A recurring theme is thick oak furnishings in simple uncrowded spaces, with delicate touches such as flowerpots and lace curtains, all bathed in the dramatic, chiaroscuro light immortalized by Rembrandt and Vermeer. But there's also another side to Holland, where each house has its own distinct, unpredictable personality. The Dutch didn't invent split doors for nothing: opening the top part permits light and breeze to enter, as well as the gazes of passersby. Their open, inviting culture means curtains are rarely drawn and shutters often left open. The Dutch are proud of their homes, and rightly so. The old and the new are elegantly brought together in these castles, windmills, historic houses, and reed-thatched cottages. Among the destinations you'll find the Tsaar Peterhuis, the cottage inhabited in 1697 by Peter the Great while on an incognito mission to steal shipbuilding secrets from the Dutch, and painter Cornelis Le Mair's farmhouse decorated with antiques from the Far East, as well as authors Barbara and René Stoelties' own castle in Gelderland. Including over 200 illustrations, with selected paintings by the great Dutch masters interspersed, this is a delightful romp through Holland's most charming houses.

A MUST for every family...and every library.......2002-01-13
This whole series of books is fantastic. The reviews (usually a paragraph or so) are concise, insightful, and obviously written by people who have actually read and used the books with children. They're grouped according to reading level, and neatly cross-referenced by title, author, illustrator and topic, so you can quickly find what you need. In addition to the reviews (400 in this book alone) there is other useful information, like a complete list of Coretta Scott King Award titles and interesting web sites. Besides being a great (and inexpensive) reference book, it's also great fun to read!

In 1992 two mothers founded Black Books Galore, the nation's leading organizer of African American children's book festivals, and set out to identify and distribute fine children's literature that was for and about African American kids. Ultimately, authors Donna Rand and Toni Trent Parker selected a stellar assortment of books for boys from birth through eighth grade for inclusion in this fabulous resource for boys (as well as hundreds more in the version for girls: Black Books Galore! They include several special features, such as "The Creator's Reflections"--spotlights on talented authors and illustrators, from Angela Johnson to Tom Feelings to Mildred Pitts Walter--as well as quotations from well-known African American personages and from young readers and their parents. The selections are arranged alphabetically by title and numbered sequentially for easy cross-referencing. Each entry includes title, subtitle, author, illustrator, publisher of hardcover and paperback editions, original publication date, and a brief synopsis of the book. Excellent Resource.......2006-10-01
I found this to be an excellent resource to help locate books with black boys as main characters. This book is divided into different sections --- preschoolers and upward --- which helps you select age appropriate titles. Wonderfully detailed descriptions and opinions of books are given as well as publisher information, etc. Books are of a great variety (educational, entertaining, etc.). Certain authors are highlighted with a biographical sketch. Also highlighted are real black boys of various ages who briefly tell of there favorite book. I never new that 90% of these books existed.
Black Books Galore.......2005-07-26
I purchased the book relating to boys and found it to be an extremely helpful resource in locating books that depict black children in the stories. The book entries are categorized by the age of the child reader from newborn to teenager, and is accompanied by a thorough description of its contents, as well as background information on the authors. I know I will return to this resource time and time again as my grandson enters each new phase of growing up.
