His Plainsmen series brims with colorful characters, fierce battles and compelling historical lore. The Civil War was over, and a great westward march began. Settlers and soldiers poured out of the East along the Bozeman Trail, cutting deep into sacred Sioux hunting grounds. For Red Cloud and his warriors, there would be no choice but to fight for their ancestral rights.Seen through the eyes of gruff Sergeant Seamus Donegan, here is the historically accurate tale of a tragic opening to the war between two great civilization: the Fetterman Massacre of 1866.

Hey i'll read the sequal .......2004-08-23
Sure this book has some cliques in it for example
Pompous army officer that you know is just going to get his men killed
Hardened Civillian that used to kill people for a living but now doesn't
A "weak women" freash from the cities of the east who has never been on the frontier before but finds deep within herself the coruage to blah bla blah.
I'm not saying I didn't like. Hey I love westerns I jst realize that no book is perfect. The author does to a preety good job of mixing fiction and history and if you are a western fan I recommend it.
Say it ain't so, Joe!.......2003-03-15
I listened to the audiocassette of this massacre. Massacres come out a little different on audio than they do in a movie, or in a book, or (!) in person? Anyway, they're harder to follow, because the geography is abstract and so are the people. All I know is that Colonel Carrington, Jim Bridger, and Sergeant Seamus Donnegan are the good guys. Fetterman (I forget his rank, but he's a hotshot something) and Captain Brown are the bad guys (and they pay big time!). Man-afraid-of-his-horse, Curly, and Red Cloud are kind of like non-innocent bystanders: they wreak plenty of havoc, but it's not really they're fault, they're just sort of trying to "get over"? I myself had never heard of the Fetterman Massacre (1866), ten years before Custer's turn. Mr. Johnston, may he rest in peace, has educated me. What better way to learn history? But maybe the listener might benefit from having handy an atlas with detailed maps of the fighting area. Maybe some biographical information about the combatants. Anyway, worth listening, but needs some adjuncts. And scary! When you think about being in Fetterman's shoes, but then isn't all war scary? Diximus.
Excellent Series.......2002-11-15
Terry C. Johnston, has done one hell of a job on this series. I highly recommed to anyone reading westerns today. He will keep you on the edge of your sit.
I don't think anyone will be disappointed in this book or series. If you don't care for reading an author getting off on a cursade you won't have to worry about Terry as he won't go there. He makes you feel as if you are part of the battle, or sitting right next to the characters in the book.
Enjoyable read.......2002-01-27
This historically accurate novel about the initial stages of the war between the U. S. army and the plains Indians (the Sioux, Cheyennes, and Arapahos) is an exceptionally enjoyable read. Nearly all the characters are names out of the history books (Crazy Horse, Red Cloud, Henry Carrington, William Fetterman, etc.) with one big exception. Seamus Donnegan, ex-army sergeant, is a fictitious and likeable rogue, although possibly a tad too John Wayne-ish. As a student of Native American history, I was left somewhat wanting for a clearer view of the Indian side of the tale, but that aside I'd recommend this book highly. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

exciting.......2004-04-09
I am just now reading on the West and found this book to be exciting and fun to read. I learned a lot about the West shortly after the Civil War and could not put this book down. From the harsness of the conditions to bill Fort Phil Kearny to the Fetterman Massacre, it's all here and exciting to read.
10 yeaars later simular events repeat themselves in the Little Big horn.
Terrific examination of western tragedy.......2003-02-15
Before historical author Dee Brown penned his ultimate and most famous work "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee," he was out hiking in the sticks, so to say, with his carefully researched "The Fetterman Massacre."
Formerly known as "Fort Phil Kearny: An American Saga," but re-named "The Fetterman Massacre" to emphasize the most famous battle which took place at the cursed frontier fort, Brown's work is a carefully researched examination of the few fatal years of existence of a small cavalry outpost located in the foothills of the Big Horn mountains in 1865-66. When reading this work today, it is extremely difficult to imagine the terrible conditions these men lived under on a daily basis.
Sent by the U.S. government into a hostile land that belonged to the Sioux and Cheyenne Native Americans, these soldiers built a fort along the Montana Road to protect travelers and prospectors. But harsh weather conditions and the ever-present threat of furious Native American warriors offended by the placement of this fort in the heart of their ancestor's land, eventually led to the infamous massacre.
On the morning of Dec. 21, 1866, Captain William Fetterman led 80 men out of Fort Phil Kearny to rescue woodcutters under assault by Red Cloud's Oglala Sioux. Crazy Horse, among others, set a decoy trap for Fetterman and his doomed troops, and as they rode over a hill were attacked and killed to the man in a furious battle lasting about 20 minutes. This massacre eventually led to the dismantling of the fort, a Congressional investigation, and the destruction of Kearny Commander Henry Carrington's military career.
When reading Brown's novel today, one realizes that the situation Carrington was forced into was an almost impossible responsibility. Fetterman and his men were not the only casualties at this doomed outpost. In fact, after reading "The Fetterman Massacre," one realizes men died on a monthly basis, including woodcutters, settlers, prospectors and soldiers going to a nearby stream to fill water buckets.
Brown's work is fascinating, and he draws from such historical documents as Army records and first-hand interviews to paint a vivid, if not heartbreaking picture of these terrible frontier wars. When one stands today at the desolate, almost gothic location of the fort outside of Sheridan, Wyoming, one can almost hear the trumpet calls, the crack of rifles and the cries of men losing their lives. The battlefield and the fort locations are almost pristine, with only a nearby Interstate visible on the far horizon.
With Brown's painstaking documentation in hand, one can almost step back in time to this lonely place. And perhaps that is the strongest recommendation for this book. It recreates a time and era in frontier history that was brutal, if not alien. "The Fetterman Massacre" is an eye-opening work about a little-known moment in American history.
An army detail ambushed by the Sioux ten years before Custer.......2001-05-21
The Fetterman Massacre occurred right after the Civil War. On the Montana Road, the commander Colonel Carrington was detailed to build and staff three forts in Montana and Wyoming. The Sioux and other Indian tribes led by Red Cloud laid seige to the forts. The Indians laid a trap and when one Captain Fetterman went beyond his orders, he and his troops were killed and their bodies mutilated. Dee Brown doesn't paint a pretty picture of the Army's decision to blaim Carrington or the Indian habit of butchering people. The only one who comes out positively is Colonel Carrington. I would agree with the earlier reviewer that the book starts out slowly, but it builds toward the climax of the battle and the aftermath.
If you want to learn about western history, start here........1999-08-23
This book finishes with incredible events that were set up at the beginning. It shows that this fight is where all the western stories in Hollywood originated; and is a real page turner as the Indians increase their activities. It will leave you impressed, both by the history you have finally learned, and the hardships endured by all parties involved. This is western history at its best.
Drags at start,but mid-book,a pageturner........1997-12-13
I found Dee Brown's book on this military history to drag a bit at the start, but by the middle of the book I was pulled in by the intensity and detail of his research. A vivid and brutal account of the way of the west in the mid-19th century. From the cunning stealth and strength of the leader Red Cloud,to the meticuliousness and orderly fashion of Colonel Henry Carrington, who through him and sub-ordinates(Fetterman) misdecisions, led to an combined victory of Sioux,Cheyenne, and Arapaho. Dee Brown's detail and account of this pre-cursor event to Custer, should be read by every sincere western historian.

Book Description
First published in 1910, Frances C. Carrington’s My Army Life and the Fort Phil Kearney Massacre recounted the author’s adventures as an army wife on the Great Plains, but also sought to set the record straight on her second husband’s involvement in the Fetterman fight.
Frances traveled with her first husband, Lt. George Washington Grummond, to Fort Phil Kearney in Wyoming in 1866 where he was killed in the Fetterman incident just a few months later. She eventually married the post commander, Col. Henry B. Carrington, after the death of his first wife, Margaret, who had befriended and cared for Frances during her brief, tragic episode at the frontier post.
Frances’s narrative recalls the wonder and worries of a naive young bride during the fateful days of 1866. From her voyage to Wyoming to her encounters with unfamiliar peoples and strange landscapes, Frances’s vivid prose examines not only the everyday workings of a frontier army post but also the political and social intrigue behind one of the most controversial military defeats in Western history.

Significant of Early Wyoming.......2006-10-30
The 1860's were turbulent years throughout the west and the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming were no exception. Francis Carrington's reminisces of these times are essential to understanding not only army life on the frontier, but also the true facts of the horrid Fetterman Massacre of 1866.
Venturing west as a young bride to Lt. George Grummond, she describes in detail the landscapes, people and day to day existence of trail life while on their way to establish Ft. Phil Kearney on the eastern flank of the Big Horn Mountains. The fort's purpose was to protect emigrants traveling to the gold fields of Montana.
With the land initially promised to the Sioux in treaty, the government's newer policies of allowing a road and forts to be built through this region fueled acts of violence from the Sioux.
Frances' husband Lt. Grummond, along with Lt. Colonel William Fetterman and a total of eighty-one men were led into ambush by the Sioux in December 1866 and all killed. The post commander, Colonel Henry Carrington, gave explicit orders which were disobeyed resulting in the slaughter of these men.
An informative and expressive read which also upholds Colonel Carrington's command.

Book Description
Forever Young offers a wide-ranging survey of the notion of longevity, from antiquity to the present. The author looks at the many manifestations of one of humanity’s most powerful dreams: the prolongation of life and youth with immortality as a final objective. Using a variety of sources – religion, folk traditions, science, literature and art – the book shows on the one hand the persistence of the human spirit (the desire for longevity is revealed as an extremely stable archetype throughout history) and on the other, the innovations specific to each period or culture due to the progress of science and differing ideologies and attitudes.
Nowadays, prolonging life and youth has become a major goal of society due to a combination of several factors: the spectacular increase in life expectancy; the advances of science and especially genetics; and, finally, the decline of religious belief in life after death, emphasizing the only remaining certainty – corporeal life. The author, a specialist in mythology and imagination, approaches his subject in an accessible and engaging way.

Book Description
Sweeping It Under The Drug is a complete book about "recreational" drugs, what their psychological and physical effects are (short-term and long-term), and why people use each of them. It also includes many "minor" drugs (e.g. food, television, sports, etc.) that people use to alter, sublimate or avoid their natural experiences. This book also contains the only natural, root-solution for a drug/alcohol problem (as opposed to band-aid treatments of the symptoms or forceful stoppage).

I read this book back in 1990, just shorty after it was published and haven't read it since. I would have to say that this is the best all around book on the subject of manufacturing illegal drugs. It is extremely technical, but if you have a good chem background, then it should be no problem to comprehend.

The Naked Truth About Drugs.......2005-02-02
How could you possibly agree that drugs should be made legal, but after reading the book I can see the writers point and how it could decrease crime.
I enjoyed how he brings you from the beginning of drug use to present day as well as how drugs played a part of his life.
A book that continues to linger with you as you debate in your own mind the morals of drug use agianst it's legalization to decrease crime.

Truely Amazing.......2006-11-16
My ex wife bought me a this book for Christmas back in 1978 or '79 and I still have it. I keep it in my special library of outstanding books which I have had the good fortune to come across, regardless of subject matter. This book is of a quality which deserves to be bound in leather. The dozen or so National Geographic quality photographs in its center alone were worth the price of the book; Paul Newman with his razor blade necklace for running lines, crates of fake bannanas filled with cocaine and guarded by an ominous looking tarantula, America's "Top 30" (buds, etc. I am glad that I have kept my copy over the years. It is a referance guide which is as useful today as it was almost 30 years ago.
This is the BEST book I've ever seen on this subject!.......2003-11-23
I was "caught" as an abuser of marijuana in 1979 while serving in the U.S. Army. I was sent through a "rehabilitaion program" at the time. I brought in and showed this book to my councellor, (a Mrs. High....believe it or not!)....and she had the Army purchase 25 copies from "High Times"! The original purchase price in 1978 was $25.00.....I have seen it go as high as $600.00 in rare book stores! Definately a wonderful resource book, and a great investment! I loved it then, and it still hasn't become outdated.
Don't Bogart that Book, My Friend!.......2003-03-17
...
As the cover states - it is "the most exhaustive book ever published on drugs." Covering everything from the early history of narcotics, through the drug influenced underground comics of the 60s, from drug use as aphrodisiacs to its effect on music and art.
Clocking in at over 400 pages, with a small but readable print, 2 columns per page, this is a fascinating book. I defy anyone with a vague interest in this subject to pick it up, turn to virtually any page and learn something new and then become enbgrossed.
As the back cover asks - did you know Pope Leo XIII took frequent doses of Vin Mariani, or wine of Coca as it is also known; other imbibers being the authors Jules Verne and Zola, and, get this, Thomas Edison!? ...
Satan's Best.......2000-08-05
I read this book from cover to cover and I found it to be both entertaining and amusing. But please be warned that when I finished it I felt a chill run down my spine. I had the feeling that the message it was sending was both alluring and evil in it's intent. Satan had had an influence in its creation. Better than any Stephen King thriller!
The Best Guide for Cannabis Connoisseurs.......2000-07-03
I owned a copy of this encyclopedia dating back in the late'70's. A long lost friend of mine borrowed the book and neverreturned it. The book must be really that good. The friend did not return it. It had educated me about the subjects of recreational drugs and its uses and abuses. I missed that book. Now, I would have to buy a used copy from Amazon.com. Apropos, this is not a sale pitch for Mr. Besos. Thank you very much for letting me voice out my little opinion of this educational tool. Thanks again.
