For the serious collector.......2006-11-13

This is a well organized reference to Bush-McCoy. It contains a history of Bush-McCoy; this added knowledge adds to the fun of collecting and allow you to sound more like you know what you are doing. Then there are pages on the different "marks" of the pottery. There is a dated value guide. But I find it easer to do my own comparing. The big plus is the color pictures that show what is available. For those discriminate people that do not just buy anything that says Bush-McCoy there is an index. It is also fun to see you Bush-McCoy pieces in the book.

The baseline for Roseville Art Pottery.......1999-04-24

The Huxfords are wonderful authors that have offered, collectors of Roseville Art Pottery, a basic foundation for identifying various Roseville lines. No one author [I personally author a mid-year price guide]has all the answers, but each of us attempt to add to the ongoing data base. The Huxford volumes are an essential tool for Roseville collectors and Dealers.

Certainly not an "encyclopedia " of all Roseville Pottery........1998-09-03

I purchased both the first and the second of the Roseville series by Sharon and Bob Huxford, hoping that I would get a complete guide of all Roseville pottery with prices. Unfortunately the "encyclopedia" was not complete. I guess this is how the authors sell books by not putting together a definitive book on Roseville.

Lutyens houses come alive.......2007-03-27

Although this book was published in 2000, I was surprised to find no customer had yet reviewed it. It is a little different from other books on the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens.
First of all, most of the photographs are in color, bringing the subjects to life in a way that was not possible in previous books, many of them relying largely on old photographs from Country Life magazine. Thus we get a much more real feeling of those classic Lutyen houses, nestling into their incredible English gardens (largely designed by Gertrude Jekyll) and see how the design is carried on through to the interiors. All the favorite Lutyens houses are there - Goddards, Orchards, Little Thakeham, Munstead Wood, Deanery Garden, Marsh Court and more.
Another difference in this book is that it deals not only with the architecture but also with the design of the interiors, the architectural fixtures and accessories and the furniture, which in themselves are amazing - they bow to tradition, yet look to the future - and many have been borrowed by more than one modern designer.
This book is well worth consideration.

Born in 1869, Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens opened his own office in London when he was only 20 years old and began his career with a series of opulent country houses. The architect of such important commissions as the British Embassy in Washington D.C., in 1925, and the plan for New Delhi, the new capital of British India, in 1912, Lutyens continued throughout his career to design houses in which the vernacular manner adopted by Philip Webb and Norman Shaw in the previous century was developed with originality and wit and with remarkable formal control. As an upholder of the classical language of architecture, Lutyen's achievement was not always appreciated by a younger generation of architects inspired by the modern movement, but the sheer beauty of materials and construction and the inventive handling of historical styles offered by Lutyen's houses makes his contribution to early-20th-century domestic architecture on a par with that of his contemporaries Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Gavin Stamp, an expert on the architecture of Lutyens, presents 22 houses illustrated with exquisite duotone photographs culled from the archives of the great British magazine Country Life. Most of the photographs date from before World War I and show the houses as their architect intended they should look and performing as they were designed to perform, before the kitchens were modernized, the gardens simplified, and the interiors compromised to accord with modern tastes.

THE GREAT LUTYENS.......2006-11-12

Lutyens excelled in the creation of great country homes. He designed in the best English tradition and his estates on the exterior often looked like they had been there for decades or a century or more. Of course he is most famous for his Vicroy's House in New Delhi and his work with Baker on the master plan for imperial Delhi of the British Raj. Lutyen's was a British treasure, one of the great traditional English architects. This book has enlightening text and wonderful images, it really shows off his work in its best light. Highly recommended indeed.
