An excellent resource for lovers of Victorian architecture.......2001-06-26
"Victorian City and Country Houses: Plans and Details," by Geo. E. Woodward, is a visually rich window into the architecture of the late 19th century. This book is an unabridged reprint of a volume originally published in 1877 under the title "Woodward's National Architect, Vol. II."
This book contains floor plans and elevations (both front and side) for both row houses and stand-alone houses. One fascinating aspect of this book is the inclusion of plans for the basements and attics, in addition to those for the primary floors. Also included are designs for gazebos and other structures.
You will see many of your favorite Victorian era architectural elements in this book: towers, covered porches, mansard roofs, and more. A series of detail pages focus on some specific decorative elements: dormer windows, balusters, finials, roof cresting, etc. Overall, an excellent book.
My life long affair with Victorian Archietecture.......2000-06-18
has led me to this facinating and compelling book. Although I'm certain there are simmilar books out on the market, this was the one that I first picked up. Prior to this time, I had been looking at home planning magazines in a vain attempt for needed inspiration. Even if you do not own a home or are planning in the near future, this book is too good to pass up.
Book Description
44 authentic and charming designs for vacation homes in varied styles and sizes, most low-to-medium budget, including designs for a Victorian club house, pavilion, school house and a "small seaside chapel." With perspective views, elevations and floor plans. 200 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
a nice little book.......2007-05-03
A nice little book on the subject. Gives the reader a basic covering on a variety of dwellings of the period but unfortunately rarely gives more than one or two floors of a design that uas three or four without providing a full set. Also doesn't provide scale for some designs.
Another great resource from Dover.......2003-08-12
Though these houses purport to be "country houses and seaside cottages," there's little reason they couldn't have been built in any Victorian small town. They range from a tiny three-room structure to a rambling 10-bedroom Dutch Gambrel mansion (called in those days a "villa") to a "club house" (easily altered to private use), a lakeside pavilion, a Baptist chapel, a "stone rectory in Iowa," and a couple of apartment blocks, one of which eerily reminds me of a building not far from my former home. These buildings are primarily of the Eastlake or Queen Anne style, the original book having appeared in 1883, an era when the front stair-hall was often as big as any other room and used as such. You'll need a magnifier to make out some of the details, but if you have any interest at all in late-Victorian domestic architecture, you need to have this volume on your shelves.
Country Houses and Seaside Cottages of the Victorian Era.......2000-08-21
Is a great visually informative book. It gives the reader a better idea of the way homes were built in the late 19th century. The book covers a wide variety of victorian styles and includes plans, perspective views and elevations from a small 4 room cottage, to a huge 36+ room mansion in the Caribbean. I recomend this book to anybody interested in late 19th century victorian architecture.

Book Description
Frank investigates an intertextual exchange between nineteenth-century historical disciplines (philology, cosmology, geology, archaeology and evolutionary biology) and the detective fictions of Poe, Dickens, and Doyle. In responding to the writings of figures like Lyell, Darwin and E.B. Taylor, detective fiction initiated a transition from scriptural literalism and a prevailing Natural Theology to a naturalistic, secular worldview. In the process, detective fiction skeptically examined both the evidence such disciplines used and their narrative rendering of the world.

Book Description
Victorian painters idealized English country life as a place of carefree children, charming thatched-roof cottages, and pretty flowers. Here is both the nostalgia and the truth of that world--drawn from period artwork and from the era's great writers such as Thomas Hardy. See how the cottages were built, how they looked inside, and what activities took place there, from harvesting to crafting. These beautiful watercolors offer a tantalizing view of a pastoral paradise.
Customer Reviews:
Very sweet book.......2007-06-10
This is a very sweet collection of pictures. I like it for garden ideas for my cottage style home.
Victorian Cottages by Andrew Clayton-Payne.......2001-08-21
This is a wonderful book for the lover of the old English cottage painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is filled with full colored pictures on every page of the paintings and describes life in these times. A great addition to anyone's library who is interested in these times and the painter's who so aptly captured a way of life long gone. Paintings by Allingham, Strachan, Stannard, Foster and others are included.

Victorian country homes and the people who lived in them.......2007-02-17
The country houses built in Britain during the mid- and late-19th centuries, as Mark Girouard, notes in this book, are monuments to their age. Built for the Victorian country gentleman, they reflected the values and priorities of his class, while their development speaks to the changing tastes and technologies of the period. In taking these houses as his subject, the author seeks to offer insight not just into the buildings but into a social class that dominated the age and whose influence can still be felt in many ways today.
Girouard divides the book into three parts. The first offers a general overview of Victorian country houses, including their design, construction, and layout. This allows him to provide some generalities about Victorian country homes, as well as charting their evolution throughout the period. He follows this in the second part by detailing 23 houses built during the era. Scattered throughout Great Britain and Ireland, they serve as case studies, with their individualized descriptions illustrating the assertions made earlier in the book. The remaining homes built during the era are listed in a catalog that comprises the final third of the work, giving readers a complete list of every one of the homes and their subsequent fate.
Generously illustrated with photographs of the houses and supplemented with floor plans, maps, and biographical details of the architects, Girouard's book is a lavish study of its subject. Written in a clear style, its pages offer a comprehensive synopsis of the evolution of Victorian country abodes, one that provides many interesting details about their development. Though written over thirty years ago, it remains a useful starting point for anyone interested in the country houses and in what they reveal about the Victorian elite.

Book Description
A fine pictorial history of one of Britain's greatest remaining country houses.
Since its acquisition in 2002, Tyntesfield has become one of the crown jewels of the National Trust. Situated on a ridge overlooking the magnificent Land Yeo Valley, it is one of the last of the great country houses build in the Victorian High Gothic style. Today, it survives intact with visitors able to view its unrivalled collection of Victorian decorative arts as well as its sumptuously ornate private chapel.
Fertile Fortune offers readers a private tour of this magnificent house; as it does so, it traces the fascinating story of the Gibbs family and the fortune that allowed them to build and maintain Tyntesfield. Awash in beautiful images, this is a grand pictorial study of a Victorian treasure.
