Customer Reviews:
Must-have for the serious collector!.......2007-09-30
This goldmine of information is necessary for both the serious collector and for anyone with interest in the Breyer collectables. It's straightforward pictoral guide is easy to use and the fair market values are just that...fair. Don't shop for a Breyer without it!
Great Pictures!.......2007-09-10
Lots of great pictures, but values are off. I would not use this to determine the value of what I'm selling. The values are often less than what the going price is, and occasionally more than they're worth. Great pics and book to see what is out there nonetheless.
Wonderful, informative guide to Breyer Horses!.......2007-08-29
As someone who has collected model horses for years and is trying to brush up on my Breyer horse knowledge, this book has been an informative guide. The pictures are clear and it is easy to see the models. Very well written and nice layout!
Breyer Collectors Must Have.......2007-08-22
We've been waiting for it and it's finally here! And let me tell you, it was worth waiting for. Felicia truly out does herself. And how can she make this better for every edition? The pages are glossier, the photos clearer, and the prices keep going up and up! This is the most comprehensive Breyer Collector's Guide ever. So order yours and go shopping! This edition includes all of the special models; not just the ones that you can buy at the store. They all are pretty. A MUST HAVE!
An incredible guide to the world of Breyer horses.......2007-08-22
Apparently the issue people had with the photos in the previous version has been corrected, because the fifth version has impeccable photos. I am currently creating an inventory database of my horse collection, over 1300 items, many of them Breyer, and it has been a great investment!
This book has every mold listed alphabetically, with photos of each color, including dates, descriptions, and an estimated value for each. I am indebted to Ms Browell et al for their efforts putting this guide together. I had not been looking forward to researching values myself (which are necessary for the insurance policy on my collection) and they have saved me weeks of work!
I definitely recommend this book to everyone who collects, shows, or judges Breyer models.

Great ideas to get your creative juices flowing.......2004-11-12
I got this book from the library prior to commiting to buying it. After ordering 8 books from Amazon this one wasn't one of them. Most of the ideas are too darn "cutsie" for me (i.e. cropping your baby's photos and putting mouse or bunny ears and whiskers is my definition of "cutsie"--not my style of scrapbooking, I'm not here to offend anybody who prefers this). The back of the book has lettering patterns and title ideas which anybody may find on numerous websites such as scrapbooking.com. I suggest this book is great for those begginers who need ideas for baby scrapbook themes: Documenting pre- & post-pregnancy, baby's firsts, baby's nursery, etc. It does not have much explanation on how the pages were constructed, but for my own sake I usually don't follow step-by-step,visualizing the parts of a layout from the photo itself. This book may be good for a beginner, but more advanced scrapbookers might find it too outdated.
Decent idea book, but hard to replicate what you see........2004-01-20
There's a ton of pages to look at, but not as much information about technique as some other books I've seen. If you're already into scrapbooking and just need some fresh ideas, this could be helpful.
Good creative ideas.......2003-01-25
I have been scrapbooking for years now and with baby #1 on the way wanted some additional creative ideas. This book does have some great ideas of varying complexity and documenting some of those moments that I may have not thought of. I recommend this for anyone doing baby pages.
Loved it!.......2002-06-04
This was a great idea book. Get this book before your baby even arrives to help give you pointers on what to take pictures of and things to keep for your scrapbook. Plus, it helps pass the time by! After my baby was born I still had "fetal-brain-drain" and needed ideas for page layouts. In the back there are ideas for page titles and poems to include in your baby's book. Well worth the money......
I just love it!.......2002-02-01
This book is great! It has wonderful ideas for putting together all the baby pictures. I would recommend it to anyone!

Not Their Best.......2002-10-01
I'm a Memory Makers fan and I tend to like their idea books. This one, however, seemed fairly uninspired to me. Lots of cute pages of cute toddlers doing cute toddler things -- but nothing that really sparked my creativity for scrapping the hundreds of photos that I have of my own cute toddler.
A general scrapbooking book would probably take you just as far as this book would.
Keep returning to this one!.......2002-06-05
This is always out on a table for me to browse at when I get brain freeze for my page designs. There are alternatives presented to doing "traditional" pages and it covers a majority of things that toddlers are into. Would make any scrapper a great gift.
Some good ideas, but not Memory Makers' best.......2001-10-27
Well, for as much as I couldn't wait to get a copy of this, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed. Memory Makers' Baby Scrapbooks idea book was great--full of good layout/journaling ideas and beautiful sample layouts to look at. Maybe I'm becoming a scrapbook snob, but the first thing that rubbed me the wrong way was that the majority of the sample layouts just didn't seem up to caliber with what I'm used to seeing in their and Creating Keepsakes magazines. Too much primary colors, simple hand-printed or sticker letter titles, bland papers...I know, it sounds SO pretentious to say that, but I truly am used to seeing different types of pages in the books and magazines I buy. To its credit, Toddler Scrapbooks has a good "Checklists" page to give parents ideas on what to scrapbook that they may not have considered (e.g., funny faces, waking up, daily routines, Sunday school), and on the same page, it mentions that it's a good idea to keep notes on a calendar of: some current favorites(books, songs, etc.), Growth, milestones and firsts...There are also poems, sayings, page title ideas and reproducible patterns at the back of the book which could be useful.
To be honest, this book is probably geared toward a beginning scrapbooker, as simple techniques are covered, and the editors probably want to simply encourage parents to take the time to do this important job of preserving the family history. Scrapbooking can get quite involved, and maybe the simple layouts are there to avoid intimidating the beginner. From this standpoint, it's a good book. However, if you've been scrapbooking awhile, a lot of the info covered here can be found in Scrapbooking periodicals. It definitely wasn't worth the money in my case!

Very disappointing.......2006-07-05
No drawings, site plans or sections, no detail or analysis, very limited environmental information, poor graphic layout. This book is possibly interesting for the layman, but certainly not for the professional.
Cliffhangers and the Stars.......2006-05-22
Rooney's Cliffhangers and Hillside Houses cling to rocky mountaintops, they hang on the hillsides; they direct our eyes outward to the "spacious plains and purple mountaintops."
Those of us who have built a hillside house know that it is not an easy endeavor. How do you integrate the structure with the land and the natural features? What do you do about the need for privacy and protection from earthquake and fire? And then there are the views! Cliffhangers and Hillside Houses written by E. Ashley Rooney and approximately 30 architects and published by Schiffer (2006) presents many homes from Arkansas to California, Michigan to Maine . Their sites are as varied as their design. Architects and designers give you many tips. Once I finished dreaming my way through this book, I was ready to build another hillside home.

Book Description
Gracious residences that enjoy exceptional views, privacy, and the absence of air pollution and urban noise are brought together in this handsome volume. Hundreds of photographs spread glorious dwellings before viewers, giving a close look at diverse mountain architecture and lifestyles in Europe, Asia, and the United States. Nestled in precipitous terrain, on snowy perches, amid alpine landscapes, and in other breathtaking settings, the homes bear the distinctive design characteristics of their countries-France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Chile, Japan, and others. American mountain locales include Colorado, Vermont, and Nevada. An informative resource for professional or student architects and interior designers, this collection also offers owners of mountain homes of all sizes and styles fresh design ideas specifically meant for dwellings in nature's most lofty settings.
Customer Reviews:
Nice Book.......2007-07-17
I bought this book because I was working on the design of a home in Colorado at the time and wanted some inspiration. There are some very nice photographs (though some of the projects are a little hit or miss). I would recommend this book as a good "taste" of contemporary mountain home architecture.
good book.......2002-11-02
this has lots of nice pictures of houses you couldn't possibly afford.
Contemporary Rusticity.......2001-08-12
This is a collection of 25 homes (published by Bacelona's Loft Publications) mostly built in rural - not necessarily mountainous - regions. Roughly half of the homes are located in the united states, with three by architect David Salmela in Minnesota and one in Michigan (Brininstool + Lynch Architects) - not exactly what American's refer to as mountainous regions. Some of the other architects featured include: James Cutler, Hariri & Hiriri, Eduardo Sauto de Moura, Alfedo DiVito, Fernau & Hartman, and Frank Harman. Most of the homes contemporary and woodsy and some, such as Salmela's, employ a regional vernacular. The photos are excellent and clear. Almost all the featured homes have floor plans. A disappointment is that few have site plans or site sections - which I find helpful to the understanding of a 'mountain house'. Although the title may at times be deceptive, this is a beautiful book at a fair price. Until somebody writes a monograph on the Northwoods best kept secret - David Salmela (and I do hope somebody does) - This is one of the best sources of his work.

Misleading Title.......2006-04-17
This is an out-of-print book that I paid a small fortune for. There is very little out there on the topic of desiging and building a house on a difficult site. Regrettably, I have now discovered the title of this book is extremely misleading. Nearly all of the houses shown are built on large level pads (!?!). A few are partly constructed on the gentlest of slopes. None of the project locations shown here would remotely qualify as a "difficult site" in California. There are no "zero-lot-line" lots, no real hillside lots. Nothing. Further, all of the home plans (except one) are for highly conventional and rather unimaginative traditional designs, similar to those found on numerous house plan websites. What a letdown. If one of these books becomes available, don't be tempted.

Book Description
Building in the hills is an enterprise full of unpleasant surprises and traps just waiting to snare the inexperienced. Arthur Levin, a structural engineer and architect who has been involved in more than 2,000 hillside projects, offers a distillation of his 35 years of experience that will help the uninitiated to avoid the otherwise inevitable pitfalls and traps.
The book has many real life examples of the unexpected encounters with unstable land, surface drainage problems, subterranean water, demanding owners, uncooperative building inspectors, inexperienced contractors, and other examples of the author's triumphs and occasional enlightening failures. All of these brief histories are instructive and guaranteed to be of invaluable help to the first or second time hillside designer and builder. More than 110 line drawings illuminate the text.

NEW ADDITION AVAILABLE!.......2000-11-04
The 1999 edition of this book is available from the publisher, Builders' Book Inc, at 800/273-7375).
Interesting book; too short; availability information below........1999-11-09
Do you want to build a dream house? Do you want to build a home that soars into the hills, or do you want one of those tiresome boring homes on the flats?
For me, there could be only one answer. "A boring home? NEVER!" was my rallying cry. But, after checking out many books about homebuilding, I could find no information about building on a hillside. And I mean that: None. Everyone assumes you have some boring flat (preferably gently sloped) lot on which to create an impossibly dull home just like all the others.
What I wanted was "Hillside Building for dummies". What I got was this book. I'm not sure if it's deliberate, but the book feels like it contains just enough information to tell you "Hire Authur Levin. He's good".
He is. The explanations of the basic concepts of hillside building are lucid. The examples are interesting, albiet a bit lacking in detail. This book is a shade too technical for the layperson to fully comprehend, but you'll most likely get the gist.
This book talks about many hidden problems and potential disasters lurking in the shadows, cruel traps for the unwary. "When is a flat lot not actually flat?" is but one of the questions he answers that you probably didn't know enough to ask. (The answer: When part of that flatness is created by fill. The fill will settle, leaving you with a broken house. So make sure you have "compacted fill" or you'll face big trouble down the road).
So why didn't I give this book five stars? Two reasons. First, the book has a number of highly technical passages that laypeople are unlikely to understand. You'll get the gist, but not the whole story. Second, and more importantly, the book is a streamlined 172 pages, including index. Once you get intrigued by one subject, the author is off to the next. His single-paragraph anecdotes are interesting and even funny at times, but they would have been a lot more interesting as entire chapters. I'd say he's crammed a 600 page book into 172 designer-short pages (fully half of the book is pure white space), but I would have loved to buy the 600 pager instead, even if it had been more expensive. This book gives you a taste of what you need to know, but in the end leaves you hungry.
To be fair, legal requirements insist that you hire an engineer to design your foundation in any event, and it had might as well be Arthur Levin. As I said, he's good. But I shudder to think what his professional fees would be, let alone those for the architect, geologist, surveyor, etc, etc, etc that he says you need to hire.
So if you want a taste of the hills before taking the plunge, buy this book. If you've already decided what to do, call Arthur Levin. He's good.
But can you afford him?

A Must Read for All Moms (and maybe Dads, too!).......2002-12-02
I hit the jackpot when I found this book on the New Shelf at my local library. What a treasure! Once I started this book, it was very difficult to put down. Emily Watts had me from the first page with her humor, honesty and down-to-earth wisdom. I couldn't help wishing that she was my neighbor, mother-in-law or co-worker. This book is a real pick-me-up for anyone drowning in the responsibility, effort and amazing amount of laundry that comes with motherhood. You'll find yourself laughing out loud as she describes struggling over homemade drum-shaped cookies for her child's preschool class only to realize that they would have been just as pleased with a Ho Ho and some licorice sticks.Later you'll be touched as she describes the moments to remember from each stage of childhood. This book is alive with spirituality, common sense and truly useful advice from someone who's been there.
My Book of Choice for New Mothers and Mothers of Teens.......2002-10-11
Unlike many child rearing books this one is real. No perfect kids, no perfect parents but a lot of great times to be enjoyed as a mother. Many of the suggestions in this book are things you will learn after you've had several children and tried to do it all really well. If you can learn them now you will enjoy the journey of motherhood so much more. Emily Watts is honest, frank, and funny and will help to give you perspective for those days you just want to scream, cry, and hide under a blanket. It's a quick pick me up and it does have some great stories and ideas. The best part is, it is written by a woman who despite the frustrations of parenting, and sometimes because of them, really enjoys being the mom and wants you to enjoy being the mom too.
