5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction of a heavy topic.......2006-02-25

I used this book to introduce my 10-year-old twin daughters to this bad time in our usually-praiseworthy US history. They were very moved by the story, identifying with Emi and her sadness and fear. In the story, the bracelet assumes the importance of a link to Emi's past; its importance lessens as difficult losses are suffered by Emi and the rest of her family. If you need to begin to address the topic of prejudice with your children, this story might be a sad yet somehow gentle way to begin.

2 out of 5 stars The Bracelet.......2002-02-02

This book was mistakenly placed in my preschool classroom and read to the children by another teacher. If you are planning to buy this book be aware that some of the themes in the book may not be appropriate for children under 6-7 years old. This book deals with a child being taken away from home, friends and family then losing a prized possesion. The book also includes talk about war and soldiers with guns. My class had difficulty understanding why Emi was being taken away. This book is more suited to children much older.

5 out of 5 stars an importance lesson in memory.......2001-04-22

In the first illustration we see two typically Californian homes with cars in their driveways. One has a "For Sale" sign on its front steps. Emi, a second grader, sits and waits. Her father has been sent to a prison camp in Montana, and soon the FBI will take her, her sister, and her mother to a detention center and then to a detention camp in Utah. Emi and her family are Japanese Americans in California. It is 1942, and the United States is at war with Japan. Emi and 120,000 other Japanese Americans (80,000 of them citizens) were sent to detention centers due to their ethnic heritage by the U.S. government; their rights were abrogated. There is a knock at the door. Is it the FBI? No, it's her friend and neighbor Laurie. She gives Emi a gift, a bracelet, with which to remember her by. They hug. Emi and her family, allowed just a couple of suitcases, are sent with other from San Francisco to a racetrack which has been converted to a detention center. They see guards with guns and bayonets, and as they pass a boarded up grocery store, we see a sign in the drawing, saying that the store owners are "loyal Americans." When Emi loses the bracelet after arriving at the detention center, she learns that a person can remember people and families in the absence of physical items and personal effects. An afterword explains the historical events and the redress made by the US Federal government under Presidents Ford and Carter. Yoshiko is also the author of The Invisible Thread, her account of a childhood in detention.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book for the Classroom.......2000-12-07

This book is a must for any classroom library. The children in my classroom had fantastic and thoughtful things to say about this book, in third grade! This book deals with tough subjects and still has a beautiful moral.

4 out of 5 stars Heartfelt story with universal appeal.......2000-05-26

Yoshiko Uchida writes of her experiences growing up during World War II living in California. Many of her works deal with the evacuation of Japanese Americans to internment camps away from the coastal areas. Although "The Bracelet" deals with the internment experience, the story has universal appeal because the theme is friendship. The young girl in the story is evacuated to a camp. Upon leaving, her best friend, who is Caucasian, gives her a bracelet. The young Japanese American girl loses this bracelet somewhere along her journey--it is not shown where. At the end of the story, the young girl realizes that you don't have to have material possessions to remember and maintain a friendship. True friendships transcend material belongings. The illustrations are especially nice and in full color throughout.

Book Description

The Ghysels collection of ethnic jewellers is one of the world's largest and most comprehensive. It is the culmination of passionate quest of over fourth years for aesthetic beauty and authenticity. As such, it represents an invaluable repository of research, taste and discernment. We enthusiastically pursue our journey through the twists and turns of the Ghysels' wealth of adornments. After having explored the universe of rings and earrings in two prior books in this series, we now have the pleasure of discovering the universe of bracelets. These mainly unpublished braceletes--about 1200 of them--have been chosen piece by piece with great love and exquisite taste. They form a group of exceptional quality that displays a great variety of forms. The creativity of Colette Ghysels' layouts and the quality of Mauro Magliani's photographs add to our visual pleasure.

From the standpoint of their shapes, many ethnic bracelets straddle the border area between two worlds: that of prehistory, where the traditions of some ethnic groups have been kept alive into the 20th century, and that of jewelry created by contemporary artists.

Just as with rings and earrings, bracelets and anklets punctuate the phases of one's life. Small rings, which tinkle with the least movement, preserve children from evil spirits in the Near East. All self-respecting Jewish brides from Sana'a wear several pairs of bracelets with gossamer filigree. In order to ensure abundant progeny, A Bengal bride will be given a bracelet made from a shell. A flat ivory bracelet rewards a Sudanese elephant hunter of the Dinka tribe for his bravery. And, when undertaking their final journal, both men and women surround themselves one last time with bracelets, such as the jade ones found in Chinese tombs.

the author guides us on a continent-by-continent tour, explaining the historic and cultural contexts in which these ethnic bracelets originated. Captions inform us of materials, dimensions and uses. A glossary of technical terms, maps and an index round off the descriptive information.

4 out of 5 stars a helpful book for the serious collector.......2007-07-05

As dealer and collector of ethnographic arts from Africa I've found this book invaluable. And Africa is but one of this volume's beautifully photographed sections. Tribal groups around the world have developed bracelets- the most basic of human adornments- in stunning variety to express their ethnic identity. Although brief on text this book covers a lot of ground in celebrating and identifying the diversity.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect with a little but..........2007-05-11

Over the past years one can see a rising amount of publications dedicated to tribal art (primitive / ethnographic art) in many different ways. Books which intention is a scientific one and books which would like to attract regular (not already attracted to tribal arts) readers.
Even if the scientific books are something very helpfull for scholars, dealers, collectors and any other "hard core" enthusiats, the mostly doesn't attract general public too much.
Books which are made for many people mostly lack certain important information or doesn't always give very accurate or exact descriptions like all of the books from this serie (World of Rings/Necklaces/Belts...).
This sometimes inaccuracy and the little complicated way that you always have to go to the end of the book to read the captions belongig to the pictures is the biggest (if so, because it always depends very much on the reader) problem with this book
BUT
thats the only and for myself rather minor mistake.

On the other hand if you look through the book (as well as the others) you have a marvellous/wonderfull/phantastic view on a world of wonders.
Probably anybody will be surprised by the variations of a single theme. What people all over the world saw as a bracelet is sometimes unbelievable.
The book shows excellent pictures of pieces in very high quality; everything in color and displayed in a very well designed way which attracts the eye a lot.

Personally i think the most important thing is to SEE as much as possible (in quantity as well as in quality) which is very easily done with this book.
There hasn't been any kind of publication in this way ever before, hence i reccomend that if you like ethnic jewellry you will like this book.

Because of the problem mentioned above and the fact that if its called "world" of bracelets but leaves the Americas to a minimum (like the other books do as well - i would reccomend Mrs. Ghysels to collect a little more of the Americas) i can't rate it with 5 stars but with 4.

5 out of 5 stars Love the whole series!.......2004-06-20

This is a gorgeous book that will delight and inspire. The photos are beautiful and the accompanying captions, located in the back of the book, provide a good background on each piece. I recommend this entire series very highly (bracelets, rings, earrings, necklaces).

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!.......2003-08-06

This is a breathtaking, beyond-beautiful book of ethnic bracelets. If you're a jewlery artist, you will gain a tremendous amount of inspiration from this coffee-table (NOT a how-to) book. I highly recommend it.

        Product Description

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "costume bracelets and bangles" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

This study covers the world outlook for costume bracelets and bangles across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

              Product Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the world market face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying metal watch straps, watch bands, watch bracelets, and parts thereof? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of metal watch straps, watch bands, watch bracelets, and parts thereof vary from one country to another? Do exporters serving the world market have similar market shares across the importing countries? Which countries supply the most exports of metal watch straps, watch bands, watch bracelets, and parts thereof? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing the regional markets for imported and exported metal watch straps, watch bands, watch bracelets, and parts thereof. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for each region, is based on a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the shares that countries are likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information for strategic planning purposes.

                    Book Description

While social and cultural historians of imperial India have enhanced our knowledge of how British men and women made their lives and careers in the Empire, the wider family practices that lay behind Britain's presence in India have received scant attention to date. 'Empire Families' brings these to the fore by focusing on child-rearing patterns and family experiences taking place on both British and Indian soil, as well as the life course these men and women took. Family conduct is significant in the class, racial, and cultural dimensions of the colonial community between the late nineteenth century and decolonization in 1947. What is more, it helps explain how, and why, so many families developed multi-generational histories in India without becoming permanent settlers. Repeated travels between metropole and colony punctuated the life course: childhood overseas followed by separation from parents and education in Britain; adult returns to India through careers or marriage; furloughs, and ultimately retirement, in Britain. Transience and formative metropolitan experiences distinguished better-off Britons not only from the colonized but also from the social inferiors from their own diverse community, racially ambiguous 'domiciled Europeans', and Anglo-Indians. Yet 'coming home' simultaneously reinforced their awareness of cultural differences and alienation from British middle class society. Nostalgia for childhood and adult years in India was common among repatriates, and indeed finds private as well as public expression in Britain well into the post-colonial era. In this first study of family life in colonial India, Buettner highlights the social significance both of growing up in the raj and of the itinerant colonial lifestyle.

                    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read!.......2007-03-10

If you are interested in the intersection between race, ethnicity, class, and identity in the British Empire, let alone colonial India, this is the book to read. Buettner's focus on children sheds valueable light onto a subject, but it also allows the reader to connect--something that students are demanding to see in history books more these days! I would pair this book with Anna Davin's "Growing Up Poor" to get a fuller view of childhood, education, and identity at this point in time.
