Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2006-11-08

This is a must-read for first time moms. A friend gave it to me a month after I gave birth to my first child and I cherished every page. I have bought several copies for friends of mine once they became mothers for the first time. It is very insightful and easy to read. I loved it!!

4 out of 5 stars Sensible advice written in endearing language.......2005-12-09

I first read this book in its original language - Norwegian - and I really enjoyed the author's style. Furthemore, it has great illustrations and beautiful black/white photography.

The author, Gro Nylander, is quite famous in Europe as a champion of breast-feeding, and this book covers this topic in great detail without becoming too lecturous.

If I could have only one pregnancy-help book, this would be the one! It would make a very nice gift as well.

This book is just as the title implies, a complete guide to writing good NCO-ERs. It goes through all the sections in an easy to understand step by step format. It also give suggestions for positive and negative bullet comments that you can either use straight from the book or simply use for brainstorming your own comments. Compared to many of the other NCOER help books this is the best one I have come across and is well worth the money.

        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding work!.......1999-09-20

From the Tally Shooter Writers' Group:

The sixth edition of this perennial best-seller has finally hit the streets! (OK,it finally hit the "river" since it's only available at Amazon.com right now.)

Very much up-to-date, the revisions to the 1999 edition of the NCO's bible provide Army noncoms with a made-to-order reference for just about any situation they may come across in today's modern army. The author, CSM (Retired) Robert S. Rush, has taken this guide to new heights. There are revised sections in the guide on caring leadership, training, NCO career development and promotions, awards and decorations, and "customs and courtesies." Army policy concerning the new fraternization rules-of-engagement is included and the latest military Web site info pertinent to NCOs is included as appendix.

The benefits of owning this book are enormous. Tuck it in your BDU trouser pocket before you deploy and you will have a modern day reference containing individual treatises on one of the broadest compilations of NCO subject matter ever made available in print.

        A must-have guide.

            Book Description

This is the latest edition (December 2002) of an important U.S. Army field manual (FM) serving as a guide for the noncommissioned officer.

            In the preface, it states:

"This Field Manual is dedicated to the men and women of the US Army Noncommissioned Officer Corps in the Active Component, the Army National Guard and the US Army Reserve - altogether America's finest fighting machine. Your soldiers depend on your guidance, training and leadership to win the Nation's wars. Wear your stripes with pride and honor. You are - The Backbone of the Army. FM 7-22.7 provides the Army's noncommissioned officers a guide for leading, supervising and caring for soldiers. While not all-inclusive nor intended as a stand-alone document, the guide offers NCOs a ready reference for most situations. The Army NCO Guide describes NCO duties, responsibilities and authority and how they relate to those of warrant and commissioned officers. It also discusses NCO leadership, counseling and mentorship and the NCO role in training. Of particular use are the additional sources of information and assistance described in the manual. The Army NCO Guide provides information critical to the success of today's noncommissioned officers. This manual is for all NCOs of the Army, both active and reserve component. While especially important for new NCOs, this book will be useful to junior officers as well. Every NCO will benefit from reading and understanding FM 7-22.7."

This manual is produced by Headquarters, US Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). It is fully illustrated with numerous line drawings.

                    Book Description

Africa represents the next frontier of the transnational politics of democratization. Recent efforts to promote human rights and democracy have yielded a mixed record of success. A comparison of regime change in Kenya and Uganda reveals how principled interventions have unintentional adverse effects on the democratic reform process. Persistent external efforts compromise the independence of domestic allies and strengthen those resisting democratic reforms. Domestic activists must carefully weigh the short-term benefits of transnational support against the harm it may cause.

                      Book Description

This is the second volume in a two-volume series of books on democratic consolidation in Eastern Europe. The first volume focused on the issue of institutional engineering. This second volume analyses the external parameters of democratic consolidation in thirteen Eastern European countries: how different international actors and various economic, cultural and security types of transnational pressures have shaped democratic politics in the region. The aim is to contrast a set of democracy theories with empirical evidence accumulated in Eastern Europe over the last ten years. The volume tries to avoid complex debates about definitions, methods and the uses and misuses of comparative research. Instead it seeks to establish what has really happened in the region, and which of the existing theories are helpful in explaining these developments. The volume is divided into two parts. The first part presents a conceptual and comparative frame of analysis, the second consists of detailed studies of individual countries undergoing democratic consolidation. Case study chapters deal with the following countries: Estonia and Latvia, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and Macedonia, the states of former Yugoslavia, Belarus and Ukraine, and finally Russia. The concluding chapter identifies a set of variables responsible for the enormous impact of external factors on democratic consolidation in Eastern Europe. It conceptualises the interplay of internal and external factors impinging upon democracy, and shows the interplay of different positive and negative types of external pressures. It also evaluates the conscious Western effort to craft or engineer democracy in Eastern Europe.

                          Book Description

Contemporary globalization both challenges conventional forms of democracy and is opening up new needs and possibilities for democratization beyond the territoriality of national states. These issues are explored by an international and multidisciplinary array of experts who focus on federalism, multi-cultural societies, the European Union and potential agents for the democratization of global institutions.

                              Book Description

Cultures of Democracy, a special issue of Public Culture, proposes that democratic strategies and practices pursued by different countries, and the relative successes of those strategies and practices, are deeply affected by the countries’ cultures, histories, and reception of, or resistance to, modernity. The collection suggests that a commitment to normative models of democracy prevents recognition of democratic practices in societies not usually seen as democratic or proto-democratic from a Western vantage point. Offering accounts of practices of democracy in Egypt, Yemen, Argentina, and India, these cultural theorists—drawing on work in anthropology, political theory, and postcolonial studies—revise notions of what might be regarded as a democratic practice.

The essays look at examples of democracy in a variety of spheres. One examines how the chewing of khat leaves in public gatherings in Yemen acts as a democratic practice by creating spontaneous forums for political discussion. Another considers the events of the 2003 municipal elections in Buenos Aires, when the center Right secured a record number of votes from an electorate jaded by political corruption by forming strategic alliances with local football clubs, ultimately leading to the election of the president of one popular club. And another essay explores the Indian government’s reaction when the political methods used to achieve the nation’s independence—defiance of the law, hunger strikes, demonstrations, and the destruction of public property—were used to challenge the government in the postcolonial period. Taken as a whole, the essays argue that democracy might be productively viewed as a cultural system inclusive of many cultures of democracy.

As every schoolchild learns (or used to, anyway), over two hundred years ago a most remarkable group of men got together and declared a revolution—that the American colonies were, by right, to be independent of England. In doing so, they drew up a long list of specific grievances, which few pay attention to any longer. But they based their claim of a right of independence on a set of principles so sweeping and universal that they continue to reverberate down the years.

The great promise of transnationalism is that all cultural distinctions will be leveled by the rules and bureaucracies of the elite. In effect, there would be no basis for any future conflict because conformity to a single set of ideas would be imposed. This would be a future of eternal peace, of perfect security, at the cost of only human freedom. Just as classical sovereignty asked only that we turn a blind eye to the question of how states were governed to obtain peace between them, so too do the transnationalists offer us peace if we all allow them to make all decisions for us, if we just submit to the Leviathan.

When you finish this book, you will hopefully be equipped to choose between these competing visions. At the very least you should be made aware that there is such a competition underway and that much rests on who prevails.

I generally tend not to rave about books but Orrin Judd's overview of the debate over sovereignty in this post-9/11 world is among the best compilations on the subject I have ever read. . For those opposed to international bodies such as the UN taking precedence over national governments, Judd's collection is a potent collection of arguments that buttress that point of view. Yet isolationism isn't his intention given the admission that sovereignty can no longer be considered an absolute. Ultimately, it is a celebration of freedom and the dream of those who signed the Declaration of Independence that freedom be known worldwide. History will decide whether this new paradigm is the key to that future.
