Some cards not in the book.......2007-09-07

Overall, this was a great book for finding out the value of my son's card collection since he asked me to liquidate it for him. Quite a few of the cards were not listed, whether they were special insert cards, or whatever, so that was a little annoying.

The Basketball Price Guide for those of us after older cards.......2004-03-19

Clearly the monthly price guides put out by Beckett are the way to go if you are trying to keep up with the explosion of basketball cards that are being put out each year. But all they can really do is focus on the cards of the stars, which is true not only for LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony today but Wilt Chamberlain and Pete Maravich from the olden days. But if you are really trying to But if you are trying to put together a set of 1971-72 Topps, 1986-87 Fleer or 1992-93 Hoops, then you really need to have a list of all the cards so that you are ready when you head off to a card show or shop and have to deal with dealers who organize their cards by number or team or name of the players. "The Official Beckett Price Guide to Basketball Cards 2004, 13th edition" serves your organizational purposes perfectly. The prices in this guide may well be obsolete, although the farther you go back the more accurate they tend to be. But you really want this book for all the lists of all of the cards compiled by the good doctor and his associates.

You will find that at 6.92 x 4.18 the size of this volume is below what we would have called standard size for collectible card price guides. This is of prime importance for collectors who want a book that we can take to us with card shows. If not, then you can still use this guide to put together your want lists. I am in the process of finishing off a 1971-72 Topps set of basketball cards (about two dozen to go), so I do not need to know how many types of LeBron James cards came out this year. I need to know what cards I am missing without having to pick up the NBA and ABA Checklists for that year and then copying my own list. A book is a lot harder to lose that a list anyway and dealing with the triplet cards Topps put out in 1980-81 is too much of a pain any other way.

That is why the boxes to check off for each card are exactly what I need, whether it is the exalted card from that 1980-81 set where the three players were the rookie "cards" for Magic Johnson and Larry Bird but also Dr. J. This is the book that will tell you that if you are looking for the first basketball card ever produced then you need to track down the 1948 Bowman card of Ernie Calverley. There are about two dozen card companies covered in the 50,000 cards for which prices are provided, which means Topps, Fleer, Hopps, Bowman, Sky Box, Ultra, Upper Deck and all the wannabee companies.

As is always the case with the Beckett volumes, there are tips on how to buy, sell, and care for your cards. These are valuable whether you are in it for the fun or the economics. The prices are always the least important aspect of these books for the simple reasons that the prices are out of date by the time the book hits the stands, which is why Beckett publishes a magazine on basketball cards. However, while that will give you current prices it will not tell you who was card #40 in that 1972-73 Topps set (Bob Rule of the Philadelphia 76ers). For the younger fans the magazine will undoubtedly suffice, but for those of us who remember the red, white & blue ball of the A.B.A. and when players in the N.B.A. knew how to shoot the orange ball instead of just dunking it, this Beckett book will fulfill all of our needs.

The Very Worst of Price Guides.......2006-02-28

This is exactly what I said in my review of the baseball price guide: "I'll make this short and sweet. I thought this book would be helpful when going to sportscard shows. I felt I wouldn't have to carry a big book around. But this book is so superficial you are better off just taking the Monthly or Beckett Plus Price Guides. DO NOT waste your money on this book. I returned it to Amazon."

Look, we all know that monthly price guides cannot possibly keep up with the explosion of basketball cards produced by all the companies putting out cards today. All they can do is focus on the name cards on the stars. But if you are trying to put together a set of 1957-58 Topps, 1986-87 Fleer or 1992-93 Hoops, then you need to know ALL the cards so you are prepared for dealers whether they organize their cards by number or team or player's name. With the "Beckett Basketball Card Price Guide" you have your best chance to find out exactly what is out there. True, in practical terms the prices quoted have a chance of being obsolete by the time you track down the cards you want, but the key thing about all of these Price Guides is that they list all the cards, including all the extras, bonsues, special sets and the like. Whether you are looking for a card of this year's MVP, Allen Iverson or Ernie Calverley (he was on the first basketball card put out by Bowman in 1948), this is the book you want to use to put together your want lists when I head out to the card shows.

This is a great source for the basketball collector. It is the most recent of the annual beckett price guides and provides listings for card sets that can't be found such as classic, scoreboard, chivas de guadalajara, and 5-sport sets. no card is left out has been left out. This updated book now gives you updated values for some of Kobe Bryant's rarest cards like the Scoreboard Die-Cut and the Chivas de Guadalajara team set Kobe RC edition. This book is recommended to all collectors.

Magical Rememberings.......2002-10-10

Working in a bookstore I often get asked for reading recommendations. Rebecca McClanahan's The Riddle Song is at the top of my list, appealing to anyone who is human.

I had read several of the stories included in Rebecca's recent compilation of essays when they appeared in earlier publications. Reading them as a whole only heightened my pleasure in each piece.

Rare is the storyteller who can summon tears or laughter in the same sentence that begs to be reread for the sheer beauty of its language. Rebecca does that. Her words create vivid images, making us feel the Prell between our fingers as we lather Aunt Bessie's "muddied gray" hair. We twinge as we witness the young bride spying from the window at her unfaithful husband below. And warm to the sight of her parents' bodies making "a spoon curve on the sofa."

I have shared Rebecca's stories with my 84 year old mother and my 14 year old son with equal success. She deserves a wide readership for her heartfelt rememberings, magically constructed.

An Honor To Be Invited In.......2002-10-09

As I read the rememberings set fort in the Riddle Song, I felt honored to be invited into Rebecca McClanahan's world. McClanahan writes with an elegance and grace that give heft and scope to her brave honesty. I was surprised not to be able to put down a book that was not racing toward a dramatic finish, but I had trouble putting this book down. The Riddle Song is as lyrical as poetry or song and as intriguing as a novel of manners. Almost every page brought a tear or a smile to my face. I found myself caring very much for the characters in McClanahan's world. This is a special book and one I would recommend without hesitation.

Riddle Song is a book to savor. The language, images, and stories are beautiful, and they weave together to create a meditation on family and self that is rich with meaning.

Each piece is a world unto itself, yet each vibrates against that next so that a wonderful symphony is created in the reader's heart and mind.

I have found myself pondering Riddle Song long after finishing it. This is definitely a book to own.

A Gently Compelling Book.......2002-09-26

This is a book of many delights. McClanahan's language is lyrical, down to earth and humorous. I find her voice clear-eyed, feisty and tender all at once, a mixture which gave me much pleasure. Her beautifully-structured essays are wrought by a fine intelligence which questions life in its own unique way; for example: "How do we navigate the spaces between ourselves and others?"

I felt that I was right there as the little girl dolls up her eccentric old aunt to go to church, or when the long-married woman packs up her beloved house to move into a new and unknown phase of life. I am especially grateful for McClanahan's exploration of loving un-motherhood by choice.

As I read I laughed often, cried more than once, and mused for days over a particular angle of perception of some human peculiarity. When I closed the book, I immediately started making a list of friends to whom I want to give it.

powerful prose.......2002-09-20

I recommend this book to all who wish to read "rememberings" painted with words. It is one of the best books I have read, the writing is beautiful and puts you in the scene. The stories will bring back your own rememberings and you will get a true sense of the author and what shaped her life. As a poet, I recommend it to both poetry and prose writers as a study in the use of lanuage.
