Book Description
The friendly text and hundreds of color photographs of beads from around the world bring order to this awesome field of growing popular interest. This new book makes the identification of beads possible. Written to encourage collectors and clarify the origins and uses of beads in their native settings, this book provides the best and broadest reference available to date. Furthermore, newly revised pricing information makes this book useful in today's marketplace. Beads of organic, stone, and glass materials are individually discussed. Then Mr. Francis traces certain types of beads to their origins in Europe, the Middle East, India, the Far East, Southeast Asia, North and South America and Africa--literally circling the globe. Jewelry makers and collectors, artists, hobbyists and serious historians alike will find Mr. Francis's personally researched and clearly stated explanations fascinating.

BEADS OF THE WORLD.......2007-05-07
THIS GUY KNOWS BEADS. A GREAT REFERENCE BOOK, AND PRICE GUIDE.
For buyers, not researchers.......2003-12-22
After 20 years working in Africa and collecting beads, I find this the best book of its type for people actually going into African markets, American bead shows, and flea markets looking to buy rare or collectible beads. It is not the right book for someone who doesn't yet know the basics about where and how the major types of beads are/were fabricated, how they have traveled, and the ethnographics associated with their past and present uses. (For those subjects, try Dubin, J. Allen, Liu, Picard, and Beckworth's Africa Adorned.) But for ballpark pricing, comparisons, and availability, there's nothing better in print.
Excellent!.......2003-11-25
I boughtthis book for my mom - she was getting really into hunting for beads (and buttons but that's another story) at yard sales, antique stores etc. She didn't really know what she was buying - just what she liked - so I bought this book for her about a year ago and she has loved it ever since. There are a lot of pictures, descriptions and background info on the different types of beads. If nothing else, it has provided a good foundation for her in her hunt for more beads so she knows a little more about the types/styles to look for (in addition to just what she happend to like)
I DON'T KNOW BEADS.......2000-10-16
AND THIS BOOK DIDN'T HELP ME UNDERSTAND THEM ANY BETTER. IT JUST CONFUSED ME MORE
NOT SO GOOD.......2000-10-16
IS MY OPINION OF THIS BOOK. NOT ALL BEADS ARE PRICED AND NOT TOO INFORMATIVE.

Customer Reviews:
EASY MONEY fOLDING.......2006-11-06
SIMPLE, EASY TO FOLLOW DIAGRAMS FOR 6 DIFFERENT WAYS TO PRESENT A MONETARY GIFT. DIRECTIONS ARE EASY AND DIRECT.
Only Six Designs - All Easily Found Elsewhere.......2005-07-20
Money Folding by Florence Temko is hard pressed to be called an origami instruction book. It's more like an origami instruction flyer. There are literally only 11 pages of instructions - plus 1 page of introduction, and 2 pages of tips at the end.
It's not that I mind a short book - but with it only holding 6 designs total, the price normally seen on this leaflet is rather high. Not only that, but Florence then came out with a second "book" with only 6 more designs in it, equally high priced. It would have been far more fair to provide (gasp) 12 designs in a book, and have it actually have enough pages to give it a slight thickness.
So, that all being said, exactly what do you get in Money Folding? You get some of the most basic shapes. You get a tree, a heart, a duck, a shirt, a butterfly and a ring. I agree that these six shapes are cool ones, and come in useful for card making and gift giving. However, the main issue is that all of these are classic designs, especially the ring and the duck. This means that you could go on Google and find all of these instructions for free.
The illustrations are reasonably good, done with drawn versions of US dollar bills so you can tell if you are folding the items properly. The instructions are reasonably clear.
If you really need one of these designs, and really want it in book form, then perhaps the cost of the book plus shipping will be worth it to you. However, I personally would go either with one of the larger origami money books where you get far more bang for the buck - or use the web and print out the information for free. I don't feel right paying someone so much money for so few designs.
The Magic Wand Is Worth the $7.......2005-03-31
The directions are well done, but this booklet "Money Folding " is just that---a BOOKLET. It has only 6 projects which are shown on the beautifully photographed cover. If you don't think that the 6 projects on the cover are worth the $7 price tag then you will be disappointed. (Add postage to that price if you aren't wise enough to group your purchases to get free shipping). I bought it because I loved the heart shaped "magic" wand on the cover. The wand is fabulous and has been a big hit with the kids who have received them from me. I would have paid $7 for just the wand directions but I also liked all of the 6 projects. As another poster reported, I also use a folded money project to leave as a tip in restaurants. BTW--I bought "Money Folding 2" by the same author because I liked the flower in a pot project on the cover. I was not as thrilled with that project as I was with the wand but I learned how to do it and then passed the booklet onto a school teacher.
A Major Disappointment.......2004-11-12
I've never felt the need to write a review until today...after waiting anxiously for this book, at first appearance I could not believe that the only folds in the book are the ones you see pictured on the books cover. And if that weren't disappointing enough, the directions were lacking a few of the steps required to make the designs. I am amazed that someone can actually get a book like this one published...big waste of money and I'm sending it back!
Fun timekiller.......2003-04-01
I got this book right before a three-day road trip. Whenever I was the passenger I would practice from the book, learning to fold money into hearts, rings, cute little t-shirts. I totally loved it. Plus, whenever we went out to eat, I could leave the cute folded money as the tip.
I think this is a good book. My copy got ruined so I bought another one. Definitely worth it. I don't understand the complaints of these other reviewers.
Customer Reviews:
Only 6 Designs - Relatively High Price.......2005-07-20
Money Folding 2 by Florence Temko has the same problem that the initial Money Folding book had. Both books only have 6 designs each - but have a relatively high price tag. With Money Folding 2 she doesn't even bother to number the pages since there are so few. There are 11 pages of instructions, plus a page of introduction and then 2 pages at the end for tips. That's it, that's the entire book.
The items you learn how to fold here are: a peacock, a necklace, a flower, a jumping frog, a crow puppet, and a pair of earrings. At least where the first book had super-common shapes that you could find anywhere on the web, these designs are a little more unique. The peacock is the most interesting to me, with its lovely fan tail. Unfortunately the only way you can keep that tail up is with double-sided tape or glue :). The necklace, a "lei", is more like making a series of circles with separate dollar bills and then stringing them on twine or yarn.
The frog does look vaguely frog-like - in essence you push it over and it rolls. The flower is really just a circle shape, stuck on a straw. The earrings are a simple twist fold, that you attach to earring posts. Finally, the crow puppet looks sort of like a beak, I grant you. But I like those four-part beaks you make out of paper much better - something I think every school child learns to make somewhere along the way.
I suppose I might say that if you really want the peacock, that it's worth the price of the book plus shipping to get the peacock design (as long as you have glue and / or tape around). But really what I would say is that there are several other books on the market that include the peacock AND include many other cool designs - and that the per-design cost is far lower on those.
Buy only if you like the 6 projects on the cover.......2005-03-31
The directions are very well done and I'd rate them 5 stars. But this booklet "Money Folding 2" is just that---a BOOKLET. It has only 6 projects which are shown on the beautifully photographed cover. If you don't think that the 6 projects on the cover are worth the $7 price tag then you will be disappointed. (Add postage to that price if you aren't wise enough to group your purchases to get free shipping from Amazon). I had previously bought Florence Temko's first booklet called just "Money Folding" because I loved the heart shaped "magic" wand on the cover. The wand is fabulous and has been a big hit with the kids who have received them from me. I would have paid $7 for just the wand directions but I also liked the other 5 projects. I bought "Money Folding 2" (the booklet that this review is for) because I liked the flower in a pot project on the cover. I was not as thrilled with this project as I was with the wand but I learned how to do it and have now passed the booklet onto a school teacher.
Keep the money, don't fold it.......2003-12-29
The only redeeming model in this book is the dollar-bill ring. Your best bet is to pick it up used if it's under a dollar, or find it in a library and copy the diagrams for the ring.
This is the kind of book that parents buy for the kids because of the neat-o cover. Mom and Dad--- avoid!
Disappointing.......2000-05-19
Should have known by the price that the content and quality would be poor! There were only 6 designs to make - two of which are jewelry. I expected more. Would be best to save your money!

Book Description
In Houses, Villas, and Palaces in the Roman World, Alexander G. McKay examines simple houses, mansions, estates, and palatial buildings, and he pays particular attention to accounts of ancient writers that deal with such topics as house design, interiors, furnishings, and gardens. Describing innovative high-rise apartments, her compact civic squares, large public buildings, temples, shopping centers, and commercial areas, he shows that Roman civilization was astonishingly similar to our own. He also discusses the conditions of life in the Roman provinces, where recent discoveries have shed fresh light on private and communal living. McKay has enhanced the text by the inclusion of over 150 illustrations of plans, sites, and reconstructions.
Customer Reviews:
A Most Cruel and Inhuman Book!.......2000-06-06
This book has given me the incredible desire to take the rest of my life and do nothing except tour the archeological sites of classical Etruscan and Imperial Roman towns and cities! Alexander McKay- You are very cruel.
For many years I have seen pictures in books and online of fragments and ruins of buildings, which can be interesting but seeing the pictures in the context of a complete floor plan brings a sudden epiphany of how our forebearers lived. I spent 7 hours surfing on the net looking at the pictures online for a number of the palaces and houses included in this book and dreaming of an itinerary covering almost all of western Europe, northern Africa and great areas of the near and mid East. Now I need to go out and win a very large lottery to afford it.

Book Description
A companion to Roman Gardens: Villas of the Countryside, this extraordinary volume documents the traditions of gardens and villas within the city of Rome. Roberto Schezen's exquisite photographs capture the atmosphere and lush surroundings of the villas, many of which are closed to the public and seen here for the first time.
The richest and most cultured cardinals and princes of the 16th and 17th centuries built urban retreats with elaborate gardens throughout the city. The area, featured in the texts of many ancient writers, has remained legendary. The luscious photographs highlight both the architecture and landscape; great artistic treasures as well as wonderful gardens with fountains and monumental sculpture are featured.
The 12 villas included are Il Palatino, Villa Chigi Farnesina, Villa Madama, Villa Lante on the Janiculum, Villa Giulia, the Casina of Pope Pius IV in Vatican City, the fountains of Vatican City, Villa Medici, Villa Ludovisi, Villa Doria Pamphili, Villa Chigi - Sala della Tebaide, and Villa Borghese. Marcello Fagiolo's accompanying text traces the history of the Roman garden and the special conditions surrounding villas built in an urban context.

Customer Reviews:
It worked for me..........2007-09-17
I bought this book and quit with it successfully in 1990. I'm glad it's still available, as I'm here to order it for a friend. It helped that I didn't have a job at the time so I had lower stress. And actually, it took me several times, even with this book, but IT WORKED. Definitely buy it -- you will save enough in one day on smoking to pay for it. Good luck!
This Book Really Works.......2005-12-17
15 years ago I read this book and I haven't smoked since.
The very interesting thing about this book, for me, was that I only bought it because I was looking for something to read while I ate lunch one day, and the only place close to the restaurant was a grocery store. It was this book or a romance novel, and I chose this book.
I had quit smoking before for a year or less. I didn't quit for good before reading this book. I had been smoking for at least 3 years continually, since my prior quit phase. I was completely unrepentent, and had no intention of quitting.
I smoked cigarettes while I was reading the book. Then, when I finished it, I quit smoking, for 15 years now! I don't ever want to start again, and can't believe I ever did smoke.
After I quit for the initial three days, then the initial three weeks, I made note of having quit for 3 months, and then 3 years. I'm looking forward to the 3 decade mark, now!
Excellent!.......2001-11-09
This book is motivating, inspiring, and supportive. After smoking heavily for over twenty years, I managed to quit simply with this one book. It has been four years now without cigarettes, and I occasionally refer back to it for its uplifting thoughts and ideas and am able to apply them to other problem areas. I recommend it highly to anyone who is serious about wanting to quit smoking.
Perfect Companion for the Fight to Quit.......2001-08-09
This book was given to me by a friend of mine when I decided to quit smoking. It helped me to get through the first 21 days informed, and better yet, prepared. Quitting smoking was one of the most difficult things I've done, but I credit this book with getting me over the hurdle. It's been 7 years now and I recommend this book to anyone I hear is trying to quit (and can get their hands on it)!
This book was thought provoking and effective........1999-08-09
This book stimulated me to think deep thoughts about smoking, the pro's and con's really helped me to look deep into my soul and understand why I loved smoking so much. The con's of smoking won out because I've been smoke free for about 6 years! I would recommend that anyone who is considering quitting to read this book and discover why you really smoke. It may help you to realize that the reasons to not smoke are so much more worthwhile!
