Book Description

Axel Vervoordt began his career as an art and antiques dealer in the late 1960s, when he meticulously renovated a narrow street with sixteen of the oldest houses in Antwerp. In 1986, his company moved to a castle near Antwerp. Axel Vervoordt's company grew rapidly in this castle and he became a major collector and decorator. The foundation of Vervoordt's style is his commitment to making the past a relevant part of today's design. By juxtaposing different works of art, gathered throughout space and time, a spontaneous dialogue between them is revealed, creating a new dimension for the future. Axel Vervoordt transcends the roles of decorator and collector. He understands the power of objects to conjure up an entirely new atmosphere and knows exactly where to place them to transform the space. This gorgeous book will be an inspiration to anyone interested in a home that is elegant and personal without being ostentatious or superfluous.

5 out of 5 stars A true classic .......2007-10-08

This book is a true classic and a MUST for anyone interested in antiques or interior design. We were very fortunate to first be introduced to Vervoordt at the 1984 Paris Biennale des Antiquaires where his booth, displaying Ming porcelain lost in 1645 in the South China Sea and recently recovered, was the sensation of the Salon. All of that massed blue-and-white in a large booth at the center of the Grand Palais drew lots of attention to the 37-year old Vervoordt and his subsequent success allowed him to restore a magnificent Belgian chateau over the next four years for use as both home and gallery. Much of this book is photographed in his home/gallery chateau.

This book provides a superb overview of his aesthetic, one which can incorporate a huge Anish Kapoor sculpture (perhaps circa 1995) with ancient stone Thai carvings, gorgeous Renaissance bronzes and wonderful European furniture. Think Rose Tarlow on steroids. The photography is excellent, almost all color, many full-page, and the scale of the book is appropriately large.

If the eclecticism of a Cy Twombly (a contemporary abstract painter) displayed in a warm wood interior appropriate for 17th C. Amsterdam sounds intriguing, he may be on your wave length. The array of tasteful objects beautifully presented is a key feature of the book. His collection (all of which is always for sale) will no doubt include some superb items which you have really never looked at before; when you read about the object, you may reconsider. His enthusiasm is contagious.

Those primarily interested in interior design may find his new book "Axel Vervoordt: Timeless Interiors" more interesting because it shows some twenty homes he has done for clients. But if you only want one book on Vervoordt and if you can afford this out-of-print text, I'd go with the Meredith Etherington-Smith volume.

5 out of 5 stars A Book of Beauty and One Man's Vision of Style.......2005-12-19

Axel Vervoordt is an artist in his own right. A designer and collector of art from all periods of history, he presents here the work of his life's vision - creating spaces where all of the arts from all cultures and timeframes meld into subtle, elegant, harmonious and extraordinarily beautiful spaces.

Vervoordt's keen eye for excellence demonstrates how architectural features of a building/living space are enhanced by a combination of art objects, drawings, paintings, murals, artifacts and bits of nature. The results are page after stunning page of thoughtful, quiet splendor. Mixed with commentary from Vervoordt (with written statements by Meredith Etherington-Smith) and exceptional photography by Laziz Hamani this book goes far beyond the borders of volumes about design. This is a bold and inspiring homage to Style. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, December 05

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational and Wonderful!.......2003-02-06

Five stars are not enough! I have savored every word of this gorgeous book. The philosophy of this remarkable man is truly inspiring--his work is very personal, and seeing it and reading about it are a privilege. Anyone interested in interior design, antiques, or art would benefit from owning a copy of this outstanding, intelligent work.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Guys Finish First.......2002-12-01

Every once in a great while a person enters this world who truly makes a difference. Axel is such a person - generous, brilliant, cultured and admired. He works very hard and has endless passion for life and for the joys of his life. This book is a glimpse into what Axel does, into what he lives for. As you read this book and marvel at what heights of artistry, inspiration, then continue on to Axel's web site, at axel-vervoordt.com. You might even be moved to travel to s'Gravenwezel, northeast of Antwerpen, and visit the world he is building there since the mid 60's. It's a wonderful book about a wonderful person.

                    5 out of 5 stars very inspirational & beautiful.......2002-08-13

This is my favourite book (and I have a big collection as a graduate of Interior Design course).
You will definetely benefit from a variety of styles and ideas (different colour-shcemes), shown on pages of this book. Superb quality of photographs makes reading enjoyable. The author won't tell you 'how to make it' (as it's not a DIY book), but I found comments on each room layout very helpful. It inspires and develops your taste. Dylan Landis, well-done!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but..........2001-02-14

I think everyone has their own idea of "small" I would like to see a book that has actual measurements of some of these rooms. I'm sure the cameras are angled to make the rooms look more spacious. On the otherhand, I like color so I enjoyed seeing how other people have used color in their small spaces so you don't feel you have to paint everything white.

                    4 out of 5 stars Nice Idea/Wish Book.......1999-04-12

This book's primary appeal to me is the large quantity of very nice photos for ideas of how to design for small spaces. Think of it as the equivalent of a dozen very good "home" magazines all focused on small spaces.

Unfortuantely, this is not the type of book that's easy to buy online. You need to browse. I can tell you that I spent over an hour at a bookstore and this was the one I walked away with. Most of the others were horribly technical books about how to build and use all these storage containers to hide/organize your stuff. Frankly, if you have a tiny space, you should throw away most of the stuff you don't use regularly. I'm more interterested in lighting and arrangement and color to give the illusion of more space... not organizing all my junk in neat tupperware containers.

2 out of 5 stars Showy but lacks substance.......1999-03-27

At first glance the bright photos of this book look promising, but the text is so small it is painful (for me, at least) to read without a magnifying glass, plus once you do read it, it's not very helpful. Some of the book is oriented toward building the space, as opposed to working with the small space you've already got. I now own 4 decorating/design books, and this is the one I use the least often, if at all. Not recommended if you want guidelines on "how to" or if you are a reader. Text is poorly laid out--sometimes not clear which caption goes with which photo.

2 out of 5 stars Nice pictures, but uninformative.......1999-02-09

I was looking for a book that would give me specific ideas about designing for small living spaces. This book only has photographs of peoples homes and their fancy furniture. If these are small homes, then my apartment is tiny. I found the title to be misleading. Don't bother with this book unless you want another coffee table book.

Handle extensions will keep long loads from bumping the users legs. To repair a rusted metal wheelbarrow, clean and patch with fiberglass cloth and fiberglass resin.

From the supplier: Many homesteaders operate under the assumption that they can be self sufficient and removed from the rest of the world. However, it is very difficult to be self sufficient and nearly impossible to not participate in pollution of the environment. However, the homesteading movement thrives on the attempt to be self sufficient and to improve the quality of life, even though it is not as economical a pursuit as it could be.

A Woman's Complete Guide to Natural Health aims to help women keep their bodies in balance using a variety of natural healing modalities. Authors Lynne Paige Walker--pharmacist and expert in homeopathy, Chinese medicine, and acupuncture--and medical writer Ellen Hodgson Brown discuss women's hormones and the problems with synthetic HRT, recommending plant hormone alternatives and naturopathic approaches to address the underlying causes of hormone imbalance and reduce toxic chemical and heavy metal buildup. Most of the book is a compendium of 140 women's ailments, from acne to yeast infections, describing the shortcomings of conventional treatments and recommending natural remedies: Chinese medicine, herbs, flower essences, homeopathy, and nutritional supplements. Most ailments get just 1 to 3 pages due to the number of conditions covered. Still, there's plenty of information to digest. For high blood pressure, for example, the authors present data on the side effects and problematic results of hypertension medications, then recommend herbs such as hawthorn berry complex and dandelion leaf, homeopathy, nutritional supplements such as coenzyme Q-10, and relaxation techniques Bibliographic notes are included. It would have been helpful to offer recommended resources, particularly useful Web sites. Recommended for women who wish to pursue natural remedies and need a place to start. --Joan Price

                                    Book Description

The most comprehensive and up-to-date A-to-Z reference to natural treatments for women.

For ten years, Lynne Paige Walker worked as a pharmacist. Dissatisfied with conventional medications and their side effects, however, she left traditional medicine and became a practitioner of alternative medicine. Here she found that nature offered all the treatments she needed-without the side effects.

In Nature's Pharmacy for Women, Walker and Brown combine their experience in conventional and alternative medicine to create a comprehensive, accessible guide to natural healing that addresses the specific needs and concerns of women at every age and stage of life. Beginning with an overview of women's bodies, their hormones, and a variety of natural approaches designed to keep them in balance, the book then reviews more than 140 of women's most common complaints, explaining each illness, its associated symptoms, and the safest and most effective treatments. Drawing from and comparing a number of treatment options-including drugs, herbs, nutritional supplements, homeopathic remedies, Chinese patent medicines, flower essences, and essential oils-this reference allows women to choose the most appropriate and safest therapies for their individual needs.

                                    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars NOT a COMPLETE guide to Women's Natural Health.......2003-07-01

This book is attractive, fairly well presented, and might be a good addition to your collection if you're already knowledgeable of Natural Health topics, but to say it's COMPLETE is inaccurate.

On your road to self care knowledge, this is interesting to read but not a primary resource as the cover seems to want you to believe. The author gives you her personal twist on a number of women's health issues but focuses on relatively few products by some rather obscure brands. This leaves readers to wonder if she writes mostly about brands offered by her own herb company. An herb company appears to be promoted in the book by referral to a very cursory web page and 800 number in the introduction but not specifically identified as her own entity.

Some of the homeopathic entries are intriguing, but again are generally referring to one company's offerings in a way that felt like the company was being promoted rather than more clearly addressing the homeopathic topic.

If you can only choose one book on natural health, the one to have is the most recent edition of Prescriptions for Nutritional Healing because the entries are more thorough and the product recommendations offer a broader scope of what's out there on the shelves. If you want several resources in your personal library, this book might be on down the list after a couple of quality guides to homeopathy and natural healing.

I have owned every edition of Prescriptions for Nutritional Healing (PNH), and it continues to be the best and most complete book on natural health that I can find anywhere. There is also a new 2002 PNH smaller guide to supplements that covers even more products and updates, but it too doesn't claim to be a complete guide - a good clue.
