Book Description
When Jeffrey Greene, a prizewinning American poet, and Mary, his wife-to-be, a molecular biologist at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, discover a moss-covered stone presbytery in a lovely village in the Puisaye region of Burgundy, they know they have to live there. With an unabashed joie de vivre, they begin the arduous process of procuring their slice of paradise amid the wild beauty of the French countryside -- a place of gentle farmlands and dense forests, of rivers and lakes, of stunning fields bursting with the color and heady scent of wildflowers.French Spirits is the magical tale of their odyssey to become not just homeowners but Burgundians. In lush, lyrical prose, Greene recalls their experiences turning the three-hundred-year-old stone building -- a "château in miniature," which the locals believe houses numerous spirits--into a habitable refuge. He brings to life their adventures in finding wonderful bargains with which to furnish their new space, including a firm mattress and some rather suspicious "antiques" bought from the back of a van.Greene offers the unexpected joys and surprises of village life, from celebrating his and Mary's simple backyard wedding to discovering summer fêtes from toiling in a verdant garden to trading insights with new neighbors. He shares the experience of surviving his mother's decision to move in and humorously introduces the locals -- both human and nonhuman -- who define his and Mary's new world. Woven throughout this luscious tale are the pleasures of rural France: wondrous food and wine, long-held rituals and feasts, dark superstitions and deeply rooted history. A memorable feast for the senses, French Spirits will entertain and enlighten all who succumb to its charms.

Book Description
The French Country House celebrates what the French call l'art de vivre ("the art of good living") within the intimacy of private dwellings deep in the countryside. Here are places of retreat-old manor houses, small châteaux, stud farms, even a former convent-that, because of their great age and accumulated memories, are beloved by their owners and provide no end of delight for family and friends. Each country house is a treasure trove of history, with beautiful furnishings as well as family albums, faded love letters, attics full of old toys, fancy dresses, retired pianos, left-over brocades and wallpapers-even libraries hidden at the tops of towers.
With 220 photographs in full color-illustrating rooms from the salon to the kitchen below and the attic above, together with details of silver, crystal, tapestries, paintings, and much more-The French Country House is rich in the colors, textures, and history of these treasured homes. Francophiles as well as lovers of décor, architecture, and gardens will be captivated by this inside look at life in the French countryside.

Worth Every Penny! (an Interior Designer).......2006-09-03
Once again, Christiane De Nicolay-Mazery gives readers a tour of some of the most exquisite, private & prestigious residences and retreats in France. However, this book is different from her other two books in that not only does it focus on individual residences it incorporates a chapter on France's national treasure of Mauny historical wallpapers and a chapter on the Le Manach family, who has produced some of the world's most exquisite silks for centuries. Also, there is a sense of fantasy and intimacy with this particular book. The photography is absolutely beautiful. I collect many fine books but the photographs in this book were clearly taken by someone who is not just any `interiors' photographer. There are also many exceptionally beautiful pictures taken outdoors. I feel a bit funny noting that the photographs have an abundance of soul but I don't know how more clearly to convey it. They are full of nostalgia. Also worth noting is that the author writes beautifully. She writes much more eloquently than most authors that write about interiors, architecture and the environs. She has much more to offer the reader. I'm assuming that the person who gave the book a poor review was expecting a cliché French Provencial book with pictures of Pierre Deux fabrics, roosters and fields of lavender. Instead you will explore a beautiful world in the French countryside with exposure to Meautry (Baroness Guy de Rothschild), Le Mesnil & Saint-Marcel-de-Felines among others. I should mention that I do not know the author or the photographer. I've written glowing reviews for her books because she has truly aided me in exploring interiors and architecture that are of the utmost interest to me in France. She has presented her material like only someone of style would do for their reader. I look forward to her next book.
French Country House by Christiane De Nicolay-Mazery.......2004-04-15
This is one of my favorite books. Originally I had the French edition and even with my poor translating skills, the sumptuous photographs easily keep me quite contented. The photographer, Bernard Touillon, will be familiar to those who know his work in
Cote Sud magazine. Touillon's photographs are like beautiful paintings. Bathed and shimmered with natural light and sensitivity, the images take you into a intimate world of interior history, textures and forms. As soon as I saw the "total waste of money" comment in another customer review, I felt compelled to ensure this book is noted to those that appreciate an opportunity to look at a book that conveys not only
lovely rooms and arrangements, but also an intangible quality of
spaces filled with memories and emotions.
French Country House.......2004-03-07
I found this book to be a total waste of money.

Book Description
To live in a castle is among the first childhood dreams. For a number of families, that dream has been realized in the glorious châteaux of France. Though visitors and armchair travelers delight in château architecture, they seldom see the private side of château life: how the French live day-to-day in their marvelous buildings. These stately residences are not dusty uninhabited museums, but real homes. Christiane de Nicolay-Mazery, herself born and brought up in her family's magnificent property at Montfort-le-Rotrou, takes us across France to visit the great homes she knows so well, opening doors that are usually closed to the outside world and allowing an intimate view of the unique way of life that goes on through the seasons. In the spring we attend a wedding at the Château de Groussay, and we see the drawing rooms, bedrooms, greenhouse, and orangery at Le Lude in the company of the Comtesse de Nicolay. In summer we visit the Château d'Haroué in Lorraine as guests of the Princesse de Beauvau-Craon. In autumn we follow the hunt with the Marquis and Marquise de Brissac, returning to the Château de Brissac for dinner. Baron Eric de Rothschild opens his cellars to us at Château Lafite. The onset of winter is celebrated with a boar hunt at the Château de Courances and lunch in the forest in the company of the Marquis and Marquise de Ganay. Jean-Bernard Naudin's atmospheric color photographs capture all the beauty and charm of these châteaux and the private lives of their inhabitants. 326 color photographs.
Customer Reviews:
French Chateau Home Life.......2007-03-28
An unusual and beautifully published book that profiles privately-owned chateaux, inside and out. It gives you an intimate view of life within the rooms, formal and informal, utility and casual, garden and forest. Family and friends are included from a respectable distance, showing weekend sporting activities and day to day life. Snobbish? Unapproachable? Not really. Think of it as a personable Architectural Digest a la Francaise, with much more panache.
FASCINATING.......2007-02-26
See how the other side lives in this fascinating book on private French chateaux. Their residences as well as their lifestyles are revealed in this book packed with gorgeous photos dripping with color and texture. One can only dream...
The French Chateau: Life, Style, Tradition.......2006-06-10
Christiane De Nicolay-Mazery is a fabulous author with fabulous connections. I'm an interior designer & I find Christiane De Nicolay-Mazery's books to be the most inspirational decorating books that I own. One of her other books, 'Private Houses of Paris', is my favorite book on the topic of decorating and I own almost every significant book published on this topic. I do wish that this book was available in hardback, as I prefer hardback books, but this fact should not dissuade you in purchasing it because inspirational design is absolutely on every page of this book!
A life to dream of.......2001-11-25
If you love French history, art, decoration and life style; if you have ever dreamed of living in a beautiful French chateau, you must get this book. Each time I open this book I am enchanted. What makes this book especially interesting is that people still live in these chateaus, these dreamscapes of tall Mansart roofs, formal French gardens and rooms filled with 18th century furniture. Forget about the text, it's the ravishingly photographed gardens and interiors that inspire one to dream. Beyond the sheer fantasy of it, this book showed me how I could create a little of the "French Chateau Style" in my own humble living space.

Extraordinary photography; fascinating reading.......2007-01-12
If you are interested in architecture, this book gives you a fascinating perspective on the use of houses, buildings and property as well as how people lived in French country houses. The book traces French country houses back to the Middle Ages and brings one up to current times, with an explication of how houses changed to meet standards of the times.
expectations gratified.......2000-12-06
What a delightful surprise to learn that Mark Girouard has written about France. I have enjoyed his books about English houses and towns for years -- returned to them again and again. His new book on the French country house has delighted me with the same mix of historical knowledge with social insight and architectural connoisseurship. All his books are full of the most interesting insights and details, and he writes like and angel. Nice pictures too. (My only wish is for more pictures, plans and diagrams.) This books is a lovely equal to his "Life in the English Country House."

This book fully utilizes the creative skills of readers........1999-01-29
Having been an elementary teacher for 8 years, I have seen what the usual book report project does to display creativity in students....nothing.
This book addresses the need to allow students to be creative in their book reports. Students can use puppets to tell about their favorite part of the story. They can produce a short drama with the aid of a friend to act out a piece of their book. A favorite book report style was the mock reporter. Here students give all of the important information from their book as they pretend to be a news reporter. Some of my students have done this on their own using a different voice for each participant, or they can solicit the help of classmates, friends or family members.
This is an excellent tool for any elementary teacher who looks forward to the day when his students actually want to complete book reports!
