      Book Description

This is a book that explores into two worlds, the appreciation of wood as medium for sculpture and a practical look of technique. The history of sculpting directly into wood is explored, illustrated with many classic examples of the art, from ancient Egypt to the twentieth century. But this book is also a vital resource for those seeking to create sculpture in wood. A complete description of the qualities and types of wood, tools (both hand and power), techniques, and finishing, complements discussions of the art form and philosophy. Also included is wisdom about making a living as a sculptor, that the author has accumulated over the decades. Direct Wood Sculpture is heavily illustrated with over 200 photographs, most in color, plus drawings of the tools need for sculpting in wood. This will be an invaluable addition to the sculptor or carver's library.

          Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Again, too dull to finish. Perhaps it has something to do with it trying to connect to The Mists of Avalon, but being completely different, and just two characters that have been created to have a romance, a Roman, and one of the priestesses of the local religion. If you like that sort of Tristan and Isolde thing, then this may well be for you.

4 out of 5 stars Second Book in the Avalon Series.......2007-08-07

Marion Zimmer was born in Albany, NY, on June 3, 1930, and married Robert Alden Bradley in 1949. Mrs. Bradley received her B.A. in 1964 from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, then did graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1965-67. Writing for over 4 decades, she is best known for her Darkover science fantasy series and her Arthurian masterpiece, The Mists of Avalon. She also edited anthologies for 14 years and published Marion Zimmer Bradley's FANTASY Magazine.

She died in Berkeley, California on September 25, 1999, four days after suffering a major heart attack.

This is the3 second book in the Avalon series and follows the best selling Mists of Avalon. Inside the wall of the Forest House in a remote part of of Britain, a secret sect of Druidic priestesses guards the ancient rites of learning, healing and magic against the onslaught of the Roman army. Nothing has ever been able to stop the might of Rome's legions, will a few women be any more successful?

2 out of 5 stars Could have been good..........2007-03-12

It really could have been good. The story was very interesting. Unfortunately:

          1. It was poorly written. SO many sentences did not make sense. I would have to go back and read and reread. It seems like she was trying to make it more wordy than it needed to be.

          2. The characters were not developed. Except for Caillean. So I ended up with basically no attachment to the main characters. Was it really necessary to spend a few chapters on Gaius' career when we don't know jack about most other things in the book?

          3. It seems like chapters are missing. This book should have been longer or had a bunch of half-finished plots left out. Like the ending. It seems like the ending was on fast forward. You might as well read Cliff Notes. I felt the same way about the end of Mists, too, but this was worse.

          4. Can't somone just write a book that is "pagan friendly" yet not all about rape and torture and sacrifice? All these books are doing is making me hate the Romans and Christians of the time and leaving me with a sense of despair. I just want one book where they weren't all shown as heathen sacrificers and the Christians show them how to be civilized, "good people".

          4 out of 5 stars good set-up for "Mists".......2007-03-09

"the Forest House" can certainly stand alone as a very good read, but for fans of "the Mists of Avalon", certain attitudes and relationship are clarified.

5 out of 5 stars 3rd book in the Mists series doesn't dissapoint.......2006-07-19

This book is the third book in the Mists of Avalon series, following "The Fall of Atlantis" and "Ancestors of Avalon." Although this book starts far later than the ending of the previous book, and with all new characters, there are bits and pieces of the characters that tie them in as reincarnations of characters from the previous books, including bindings that they've made with each other before.

As with all the books in this series, I found this one to be very spiritual. It gives a sense of connectedness with the past and Pagan spiritualness.

This story takes place in 1st century AD, when the priestesses and Druids are mostly practicing to the north of Avalon, and then covers the priestesses and Druids moving to Avalon to establish there. This lineage will go through to "The Mists of Avalon."

The situations and characters in this book have their stories continued in the first part of the book "Lady of Avalon."

I'm a big fan of this series and this character. I expect this book to be as good as Davis' last.

          5 out of 5 stars Falco takes a Holiday.......2006-10-04

This is the twelfth novel in the mystery series featuring Marcus Didius Falco, an informer and sleuth in Rome at the time of Vespasian. A series of books that have become hugely popular, so much so that the author is now at the forefront of historical mystery writers. It was probably a stroke of genius on her part to have novels that are extremely well researched and contain all the elements that would be and should be found in the Roman world of circa AD70, but to have a lead character who has the vocabulary of a present day New York cop.

Falco has like many people been experiencing problems with builders in what was to be his new Janiculum home. Glaucus and Cotta (remember them) were supposed to be renovating the bath house. It would seem that Glaucus and Cotta have left some rubbish behind when they left the renovation and it is down to Falco why they left it there.

While on the subject of building and renovations the Emperor Vespasian has more than a few problems with a building project he is financing for the Togidubnus, Chieftain of the Atrebates in that god forsaken place called Britannia. As Falco has served his time in Britannia he seems the logical person to send and sort out the mess. Helena is keen to turn the expedition into a family holiday, so Falco, Helena and the two young children, plus one or two hangers on arrive at the half built palace in Noviomagus.

Falco soon starts to rub the builders up the wrong way by asking too many questions. Bodies start to appear and the family are soon put in danger. Falco begins to realise why he hated this cold, wet and windy island so much.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant as Usual.......2005-08-04

Lindsey Davis has created a great series about an informer in ancient Rome. The informer, Marcus Didius Falco, is the modern equivalent of a private detective. In this novel he is commissioned by the Emperor Vespasian to settle problems on a building site in Britain. He refuses the commission until he finds the body of a labourer under the floor of his own bath house and discovers the builders who put him there have absconded to Britain, probably to the very same palace that the Emperor is concerned about. Davis has chosen the site of the palace that was discovered in Fishbourne near Chichester in 1960. The costs are too high for the civic purse and Falco discovers a phantom team of labourers and a crooked architect's stash of stolen building materials when he arrives with his family at the distant province. Davis' style of writing makes this a most enjoyable series to read.

5 out of 5 stars The Falco series.......2004-01-25

Can't understand why half the editorial reviews and some of the reader's reviews are for another book altogether. But this Lindsey Davis book is from the Falco series and is fun like all the others. I frequently buy my Davis books from amazon.co.uk since they come out there about a year before in the US. There is a new one Scandal Takes a Holiday coming out in June 2004. They also spell the name Lindsay Davis which I think is the correct spelling.

5 out of 5 stars About Lindsey Davis' Book.......2003-11-01

I like this book almost as well as any of the other Falco novels, even though it needs to be a bit longer. Up until now, amazon.com seems to have joined this book with the reviews for a different book altogether; until the situation is caught, let me assure you that this is indeed a book about the further adventures of the much-loved ancient Roman detective. Helena, both of her brothers, Petronius Longus, and another good character that we haven't seen since _Shadows in Bronze_ make this a good outing for Falco, who is in sent to his absolute least favorite place in the world. It's a winner in a series of winners. What book the other reviews (as of 10/31/03) are talking about I do not know.

            Book Description

The north bank of the Thames near Cannon Street Station was occupied by some of London's most prominent buildings in both the Roman and Medieval periods. Substantial stone walls revealed at the site in 1969 were initially interpreted as part of a Roman townhouse attached to the 'Governor's Palace' building complex to the west. In 1994-7 new excavations uncovered a prehistoric marsh, a riverside quay dated to AD 84 and a revetment constructed in c. AD 100-200. Later Roman buildings were recorded on terraces overlooking the Thames. Two of these buildings predated the townhouse, and one of these may have been a goldworker's premises. Important new evidence for the ground plan and use of the later townhouse has revealed that it developed separately from other large Roman buildings to the west. Part of a Tuscan order column recovered from the site suggests that the building had some architectural pretensions and a high status. In the late 4th century the townhouse was demolished and the settlement abandoned. The first evidence of reoccupation at the site took the form of early 11th century pitting succeeded by sunken-floored or cellared buildings. The walls of the 14th century Pountney's Inn, later the Manor of the Rose, were recorded along Suffolk Lane. This volume presents the results of the archaeological work at this important site in a clear chronological narrative supported by many detailed illustrations and specialist reports.

              Book Description

This report on the excavations at Atlantic House, London, describes and illustrates important new evidence of Roman London's western cemetery. The cemetery was established in the late 1st century AD, following land reclamation along the River Fleet, and abandoned in the 4th century. A total of 19 inhumation burials and 29 cremations were identified at the site, with the majority dating from the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Two timber coffins were rare survivals, and these were lifted and removed for conservation and display at the Museum of London. A rectangular pit lined with timber stakes may originally have been a water-filled feature of ritual significance. The osteological study indicates that the cemetery population was generally healthy, enjoying a balanced diet and suffering few serious diseases. This report provides a significant new contribution to our knowledge of Roman London's cemeteries, and augments recent studies of cemeteries to the east and south of the settlement.
