5 out of 5 stars A 'must' any serious collector should have........2006-12-12

What do you get in this overall pottery guide which is clearer than specialized ceramics price guides? For one the ability to contrast values for different specialized ceramics, from American and English to European and Oriental. For another, you get a general 'bible' of over 10,000 price listings, over 3,000 color photos, and collecting guidelines key to successful pottery and porcelain investing. A 'must' any serious collector should have.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to stimulate your interest!.......2006-02-13

This great little reference guide is a bargain - the price and the information. It is a easy to use price guide - not a table top book - but useful anyway. I collect Limoges and love Debby DuBay's books but I can't carry them while antiquing - The Antique Trader's books give me enough info so I don't make any major mistakes while purchasing Limoges.

4 out of 5 stars Love Limoges and this book is a great value but if you want.......2004-04-27

to read about the history of antique Limoges or want info on the back stamps or marks suggest Antique Limoges at Home or Collecting Hand Painted Limoges Porcelain.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value Guide! Love the section on Limoges!.......2004-04-17

Thanks to the editors of the Antique Trader, I found the wonderful books by Debby DuBay, Collecting Hand Painted Limoges Porcelain, Antique Limoges at Home and Living With Limoges. Thank you! Highly recommend!

1 out of 5 stars Not what I had hoped for.......2004-03-22

I purchased this from Amazon based on the reviews listed here and was sadly disappointed. I had expected sort of a systematic catalog of porcelain and pottery pieces. This listed a number of items, but with no real depth at all. It is hit or miss. The chances that you can evaluate any individual item you may be interested in is very small. I returned mine to Amazon.

2 out of 5 stars Hard to follow.......2005-10-31

I purchased this book to find out more about decorated stoneware. This book is basically a haphazard listing of pieces that were auctioned off at different auctions. The descriptions are not always above or below an item. Sometimes they are very hard to follow. The prices are the actual auction price. No information on how to tell where a piece is from, that is not marked. No easy way to read this book.

4 out of 5 stars A nice effort, well organized..........2000-04-01

This is a useful book. Many people tend to reach for the Kovels guides as a first resort, and I must admit I do so sometimes myself. But some of the more general guides they do are not as well organized as they could be. This book is organized well, contains a relatively thorough listing of the more common types of pottery and porcelain (although many of the more obscure types are not listed at all). The pricing part, alas, has the same problem that so many other reference books on collectibles deal with today, that being the effect that online auctions have had on pricing. So it may not reflect prices you'd see on Ebay or Amazon's auctions. But the prices give one a baseline from which to work, and seem accurate with regards to most markets. And the book is a convenient size to slip into your bag when you go to an antique store or live auction.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book, but..........2000-04-01

This is a nice book, but not broad enough, very limited on pieces displayed/reviewed. Also, the known makers marks for the companies included within the book are few and far between. Not every company represented in the book marks are shown, they should be. It makes a difference when trying to figure dates of manufacture etc.

      Book Description

Since they were first established in the 1880s, children’s summer camps have touched the lives of millions of people. Although the camping experience has a special place in the popular imagination, few scholars have given serious thought to this peculiarly American phenomenon. Why were summer camps created? What concerns and ideals motivated their founders? Whom did they serve? How did they change over time? What factors influenced their design? To answer these and many other questions, Abigail A. Van Slyck trains an informed eye on the most visible and evocative aspect of camp life: its landscape and architecture. She argues that summer camps delivered much more than a simple encounter with the natural world. Instead, she suggests, camps provided a man-made version of wilderness, shaped by middle-class anxieties about gender roles, class tensions, race relations, and modernity and its impact on the lives of children. Following a fascinating history of summer camps and a wide-ranging overview of the factors that led to their creation, Van Slyck examines the intersections of the natural landscape with human-built forms and social activities. In particular, she addresses changing attitudes toward such subjects as children’s health, sanitation, play, relationships between the sexes, Native American culture, and evolving ideas about childhood. Generously illustrated with period photographs, maps, plans, and promotional images of camps throughout North America, A Manufactured Wilderness is the first book to offer a thorough consideration of the summer camp environment.

We think, A Manufactured Wilderness should be required reading for any person who is considering spending their life in the field of camping. Selected parts would also be helpful reading for agency camp boards to help them see their camp in a broader context. This book is camp history, illustrated with pictures and landscapes, that will remind readers of the beginnings and changes in camping prior to 1960. We commend this book. It should be on the library shelves of every school that teaches camp courses. The 7000 plus camps in the US plus those in other countries should have access to this marvelous and rich history that is written across all camping boundaries as a reminder of a rich heritage. The camping experience may be more valuable now in its many forms than it has ever been. This is a treasure of a book.

        Book Description

This generously illustrated book examines the origins and development of the summer cottage in the resort communities of New Hampshire's White Mountains between 1870 and 1930. Bryant F. Tolles, Jr., author of The Grand Resort Hotels of the White Mountains: An Architectural Legacy (1998) and New Hampshire Architecture: An Illustrated Guide (1979), associates the cottages and their outbuildings with a group of forty architects and architectural firms, as well as noted regional builders. He also links the summer cottage phenomenon directly with the origins and growth of the summer resort hotel industry and its distinctive architecture. While focusing primarily on architecture, including such details as the personal eccentricities, habits, and pastimes of cottage owners that often led to distinctive design features, Tolles also interprets these unique dwellings in a broader context of the nation's social, cultural, and economic history.

This book is a well researched and, to my personal knowledge, an accurate historical account of these houses. The description of the house that my great grandfather had built for our family was biographically accurate and architectually detailed. Beautifully illustrated. Having personal details of the lives of the people who built these houses adds depth and interest. A wonderful reading experience for people with N.H. roots and interest in turn of the century architecture.

          Book Description

During the 1850s, New York's Adirondack region saw the birth of a leisure world centered in the area's large resort hotels. These spectacular structures clearly reflected the dramatic social and technological changes that unfolded in the United States between 1850 and 1950. In his new book, Bryant F. Tolles, Jr. studies the architectural development of these extraordinary retreats in order to explore changing American attitudes toward nature and landscape, fashion and culture, transportation, and innovations of various sorts. He also delves into the resorts' eventual decline, which was rooted in their vulnerability as wooden structures as well as in the ever-changing preferences of their guests.

With over two hundred illustrations--many of them historic photographs, along with architectural plans, reproductions of printed "views," and recent shots of the remaining hotels and their related buildings--Resort Hotels of the Adirondacks captures the glorious spirit of a bygone world and reveals fundamental shifts in American cultural expectations. Tolles brings his chronicle up to the present by exploring the two surviving grand Adirondack resort hotels--the second Hotel Champlain (at Bluff Point on Lake Champlain) and the third Sagamore Hotel (at Bolton Landing on Lake George). The book concludes with a discussion of several imaginatively conceived but never-built resort hotels.

Tolles has utilized an authoritative array of sources, including guidebooks, local histories, newspaper articles, maps, county and town records, business records, guest correspondence, and diary entries. His comprehensive history creates a detailed picture of luxury in a resort setting and enriches our understanding of American life and culture during a period of radical change.

John Rolland's book taps into the intersectional and ever changing relationship of illness, family, and time. Rolland presents a thorough and well-organized theory and framework for clinicians to use for assesssment and treatment. Rolland reaches his purpose in the provision of a highly developed and sensitive model that surpasses other models that are stagnant and unidimensional. Rolland "educates" the reader through use of charts, visual illustrations, case examples, and sample questions. This enhances the learning experience of the reader. Rolland fortifies social work by presentation of a model that accentuates the nature of social service; looking at the broad implications of change over time and the adaptability or "stuck" that a family may experience in relation to disability or illness. he recognizes the difference in "family" and the stigma of illness or disability. His weakness comes out of the very nature of the family life cycle as a traditional role in the dominant society. Rolland finishes his masterful book with a piece de resistance; the guided experience of exploration of personal values and healthcare experiences and the impact upon professional practice. Overall, Rolland's book delivers what the author and reader expect and more.
