1 out of 5 stars Misleading Description.......2006-01-03

After reading all of the opinions concerning this book, I thought I was receiving a collector's item for which I could store my state quarters. However, I was extremely shocked and disappointed when I received this book and found no coin holders. My main reason for purchasing the book was for the coin holders. I would have thought there was a mistake in shipping had I not received 2 from 2 different companies with the same missing item.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful book for Kids.......2004-01-18

I love this book. It will come in handy when my child has to do a report, on a certain state. We know of several people who would like to buy this book, but can't find it any where. Can anyone please help me, with some locations to find it? Every time I find it in the internet, it is out of stock. I live in Iowa. I need 5 more.
Thanks,
Treasa Vander Hart

5 out of 5 stars Very Educational.......2003-02-05

I purchase this book over 2 years ago. All my friends asked me where did you purchase this book. I purcahsed it a Target. This book is very educational not only to me but my seven year old son. He is currently in the first grade and on different social studies homework assignment he needs information regarding the states. He always says, "Mom, I need to go to the Library!" I tell him, "No,everything that you need, is in your book!" I'm glad I bought the book when I saw it because the only way to purchase now, is on-line.

4 out of 5 stars Love this book.......2002-02-28

My twin 8 year olds each have one of these books and they are terrific - both educational and fun. The children anticipate the arrival of each new coin and love to learn about the state/the design choices and also spend some time on the facts of the other states each time we use it.

4 out of 5 stars Cute for kids.......2000-05-29

The book has a page for each state, plus a page for the new 'gold' dollar, and a few facts on the history of US coins. For each state, there is one die-cut coin holder (2 for the dollar coin); some of these holders required great effort to get the coin to fit. The book also has a few pages of games...although one must note the error on page 70, "...America RECEIVED its independence from Great Britain." In reality, America DECLARED its independence from Great Britain in 1776, fought for 6 years, then negotiated for two. Congress ratified the treaty to end the war in January 1784. I hope next edition of this book corrects this error.

5 out of 5 stars a must have.......2007-04-18

If you are a beginner hand bookbinder like I am - and teaching yourself how to do it - this is a great book.

I had checked it out from the library and knew immediately that I wanted my own copy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!.......2002-11-06

This book is awesome. It has beautiful pictures, clear diagrams, and tons of inspiration for any bookmaking project. It gives ideas for gifts (journals) and artists books.

3 out of 5 stars Light treatment for beginners.......2002-01-29

This was the first book I bought for learning bookbinding. I liked the pretty color pictures and the way everything was kept simple. That is also the weakness of this book, as soon as you really decide to get serious there is insufficient information to do a professional job of any type of bookbinding and you end up going elsewhere for more information. But it accomplished my goal, and that is, it got me started in a wonderful hobby. And I still use the technique contained therein for making my own bookcloth and paste. Simple, easy, fun.

5 out of 5 stars Read it, Make it.......2001-02-01

This book is great! There are so many great ideas of how to make the handmade books. I'm sure many have been thought of before, but this book makes sure to run you through each step in an organized fashion to ensure and strong stable book. This book would have come in handy when I was trying to figure out how to make an accordian book for my photography final. The only disappointment is that there are not more color photos. There are color photos of the DONE books, but no color photos of books in the process. I just think it would help me a little bit more. All in all, this is a great book with good ideas. I'm feeling inspired to make a new book now.

3 out of 5 stars Not a good start for this beginner........2001-01-06

I wanted to start making my own books, so I bought this one to help me. I had a few problems. Some of the steps in the starch paste recipe are unclear, so the first time I tried I got starch soup instead. And in the hard cover multi-signature instructions, the steps get very contradictory. They tell you to past the hinge onto the spine directly, then later you're told to paste down the sewing tape BEFORE the hinge.. which would be impossible if you had followed instructions up to that point, because the tape is sewn into the signatures right at the spine.

I've managed to muddle through, but I still would not recommend this book to people just starting out in bookbinding.

    Book Description

This beautifully illustrated book features the magnificent estates built in the early part of the twentieth century by the wealthy residents of Long Island's North Shore. Many of the mansions are no longer standing, making this book a critical archive and monument to their glory. In their heyday, they were inhabited by the aristocracy of America's gilded age, among them Vanderbilts, Phipps, and Pratts. The author's evocative photographs capture the splendor of these once luxurious homes, from the houses' turrets, porticos, columns, and courtyards to their vaulted entry halls, spacious ballrooms, and vast libraries. Accompanied by histories of the estates and the families that built them, this book is a classic and evocative reminder of a bygone era and lifestyle.

This expanded reprint includes a wealth of previously unpublished photographs, and fifteen estates have been added to those included in the original edition.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-09-23

This was a great book. The pictures and written information were even better than I expected.

4 out of 5 stars Unique pictures of a lost world.......2007-07-30

This book presents a unique photographic material of some still existing as well as buildings that has now been torn down. As other has written before me the printing quality in this book is not what it could have been. The colors in some images are really bad. The artistic value of the photographs could also be questioned (most of the images are not taken by a professional photographer). In spite of all this the book succeds in describing "a lost world" and leaves the reader with a feeling of emptiness and with many questions: How could all this disappear? The buildings and their architecture are in most cases of local interest, but combined with the description of the people and the money that built the "Gold Coast" Monica Randall depicts a history that are of common interest in more senses than one.

1 out of 5 stars Printed in China.......2007-07-23

It is a shame that the publisher decided to save some money and have this book printed in China. The quality of the photos is horrible. Some are blurred, some are dark. It makes the book cheap and cheesy. Anything to save a buck. When will American businessmen learn ? We get tainted food from China, shoes and clothes that don't fit and fall apart, and now badly produced books. Once again, Americans have lowered their standards just to make a buck.........go figure....

5 out of 5 stars Mansions of Long Island's Gold Coast: An intimate portrait of America's wealthiest neighborhood.......2007-07-20

This is an intimate and thorough glimpse into the mansions of America's Gold Coast, a region of Long Island where such wealth and extravaganze accumulated in the late 1800's-mid 1900s as to boggle the modern mind. In an era before government taxes became a hindrance to such spending by the wealthy, the Gold Coast mansions rival even the most exquisite mansions, chateaux, castles and estates of Europe.
I purchased this book because I had just finshed reading "Gold Coast" by Nelson Demille, a modern day "Great Gatsby"-esque look at the decline of the Gold Coast culture. This book was phenomenal (and I highly recommend it), but I had trouble picturing the locales discussed in the book, because the scale and scope of grandeur is almost beyond imagination.
Mansion's of Long Island's Gold Coast has hundreds of pictures, some old some new. With well written descriptions on each locale, it carefully reconstructs a visual aid to understanding that region. Some of the photos are not as modern as you might want, but that is a product of photos being used of mansions before they were torn down, as have many, many of these glorious homes.
This book is a must read for anyone interested in the architecture, culture, and social mores of a bygone era. You could also use it as a reading aid to "Great Gatsby", as there are pictures of the mansions that Fitzgerald used as inspirations for Gatsby's estate, among others. Fascinating!

5 out of 5 stars The way a historical book on great Mansions should be written.......2006-09-18

As a admirer of historical older homes across Amrica, and a recent returnee to college at age 49 for a second career in interior architecture, this book is a welcome site. I have a collection of architectual books of Mansions in every grouping or by an architect or designer. The one minor flaw that I and other reviewers have had is that while the original black & white photos of the manisions with update written information on the current condition is great, we never see photos (if possible) of the homes as they look today. This one actually shows on occasion a current photo of the house as possible. Example is of Zog Ruins just off of Highway 106. Zog was abandoned by its owner in the early 1950's and the gatekeeper left it in 1959. The house was vandilized in the 60's. The photos of the house are as the house as it sat in ruins during the 60's and the last photo is dated 1968.
The books photos are not done in the slick style other books on mansions are done, but rather in a personal photo scrap book sort of way. One can actually feel the way M. Randall felt as she assemblied this book. Ms. Randall pours her heart into her personal scrap with love and care and it is seen thru out the marvelious book. Photos are in B&W and color.....while the color ones appear to be Poloariod style, it is refreshing to see them presented this way. Text is simple and straight forward. This would be a great learning tool in architecture and interior design schools as a reference or teaching book on preservation & restoration.

This book is a must for lovers of Long Island, New York or great mansions of anykind.

    Product Description

Most of the glitter that was once gold on Long Island is gone, but some still remains hidden. During the late 1800's through the early 1900's, Long Island was the backdrop for architecural extravagances and reckless spending for luxuries that were characteristic of the period referred to the "Gilded Age" or the "Age of Elegance". This book is for the curious, that want to read about a Long Island lifestyle that no longer exists. This book will answer questions like... What Long Island mansion is the second largest home built in America? Which Long Island millionaire was sued by merchants to pay for his wife's shopping bills? Where Hecksher Park got it's name? Why there are two lines of pine trees down the median of the Southern State Parkway near Belmont State Park? Why is there a two-mile bend in the Northern State Parkway? What estate hosted performances by Tyrone Powers, John Phillips Sousa as well as Ethel Barrymore at it's outdoor amphitheater? Which estate was the setting for the highly publicized custody battle of Gloria Vanderbit? Which mansion was used for the head in the bed scene from ''The Godfather'' movie? Which estate has the oldest wrought iron entrance gates in America? Which mansion was the inspiration for the book ''Great Gatsby''? Which estate has the original eagles from the first Grand Central Station in Manhattan? Which mansion took two demolition companies to knock down? Which Long Island resident coerced her seventeen-year old daughter to marry royalty? Which estate did Robert Moses acquire for a parkway extension and bridge to Connecticut? Which two estates occupied the town of Lattingtown?

Who knew that amongst such enormous mansions built by the weathiest and most famous of american entrepeneurs could stand a modestly sized mansion of such wonderful taste and stylistic grace. Bravo to monica randall for presenting the wonderful Foxland mansion to the world!!

4 out of 5 stars Revisiting Decaying Grandeur.......2001-10-21

I grew up in the Gold Coast area and go back to visit every year. I ordered this book after coming back this year. I remember many of these places from when I was a boy decades ago and it was wonderful to see some of the photos and descriptions of places I have been, and even better to see the interiors of places I have not been in. It is hard to imagine what these places were like if you have never been there. The scale of living is almost unimaginable today, and to have that much money and power concentrated in one place will likely never happen again. This book helps recreate that time and place and feeling. As it is almost 20 years old now I would like to see an update on this book. For instance, Oak Point in Bayville, mentioned in the chapter on Play Houses, has been completed subdivided now. On the other hand Planting Fields in MIll Neck is almost completely restored and is a wonderful place to visit, although it was a bit disconcerting to go on a tour of the mansion and view rooms and objects that you couldn't touch when I had actually sat in some of those chairs in those same rooms thirty years ago. My only criticisms would be that I would have liked to see more color photos, more detail on a few of the places, and more exact location info on all the places. If you have any interest in this era or this area buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Authority on Long Island's Mansions.......2001-04-09

If you are interested in the mansions of Long Island's lost Gold Coast, don't hesitate to order this book. Ms. Randall packs this book with plenty of excellent photographs and facts to entertain the casual admirer, or the aficionado.

She has lived in these houses, worked on them, and thankfully cataloged them (many that have already disappeared), with due reverence to last the ages. Bravo.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Photos & Stories.......2000-04-25

The BEST book on the mansions of Long Island. Great photos & stories by the author. She even periodically gives lectures which are well worth attending. Extremely interesting facts.

    4 out of 5 stars A terrific momento of a magical place........1997-06-12

This slender but well illustrated book features the magnificant homes built in the early part of the twentieth century by the wealthy residents of Long Island's North Shore. It is an excellent momento if you have been visiting Long Island. For a person, like me, who grew up on Long Island and drove past these estates daily, it is a wonderful chance to see behind the big walls and know more about the families who built them

              Book Description

Fathers and Babies is the one and only baby care book written expressly for fathers.

Fathers and Babies is a light and reassuring introduction into the world of fatherhood. Fathers today want to be, and are expected to be, involved parents who bond with their children and help them thrive. Yet, sadly, many new fathers feel excluded from the loop of child care.

Because most fathers don't get to spend as much time with their babies as mothers do, men don't learn the everyday skills of baby care. When they attempt to help out during evenings and on weekends, they frustrate themselves and those they are trying to help. Instead of becoming closer to their children, many fathers withdraw, conceding the domain of parenting to mothers. This is unfair to mothers, fathers, and their children.

What fathers desperately need is a special baby care training manual that will teach them how to fix a bottle, soothe a bay in the middle of the night, and help a child learn to talk. Fathers who are primary caregivers gain these skills easily. But most fathers are not primary caregivers; and because they can't spend more time with their children, they need help in order to become the great fathers they want to be.

Fathers and Babies provides step-by-step instructions accompanied by humorous, real-life pictures that show fathers what to do. The book also explains the important perceptual abilities, language skills, muscular coordination, strength, and concepts of trust and self-esteem that babies need to develop during the first eighteen months of life. The more fathers know about these critical developments, the more fathers will be able to help their babies achieve and the more worthy they will feel as parents.

5 out of 5 stars Good Baby Shower Gift.......2005-08-13

I give this book as part of my baby shower gift to new parents. It gives new dads ideas how to interact with their new babies. I have gotten fun comments from new dads. "I am glad someone knows there is a father involved with this baby. Thanks." " This is a excellent bathroom book," said my nephews.I also include in my gift What to Expect the First Year and What to Expect the Toddler Years.

              5 out of 5 stars JUST RIGHT.......2002-11-26

I bought this for my 22 year old son, who is about to become a father for the first time. He of course is interested in finding out about newborns but admittedly does not have the desire to go too indepth. This book was perfect for him. He could read each section as it pertained to the baby at the correct time thus preparing him for whats expected. The mother on the other hand . . . needed something much more in depth in her search for finding out about her newborn. Perfect for first time dads who don't want to know too much, at least the brevity of the book will keep their attention long enough to learn the basics.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to digest.......2001-01-30

I loved this book. It was sweet, entertaining, and non-threatening; definitely not written for women, as is typical. As a man minimally exposed to babies my entire life, I found it eye-opening and helpful in setting my expectations for life with an infant.

              3 out of 5 stars wasn't what I expected.......2000-09-26

Half of the space in this book is devoted to unnecessarily large drawings (illustrations). The text is VERY simplistic, e.g., it's a good idea to be extra nice to your partner during this period and help out. BOTTOM LINE: This might be a very valuable book for many people, especially as either an introduction or a summary. For more details on babies, check out THE NEW FATHER (Brott).

5 out of 5 stars Very accessible book for Dads -- but Moms will like it too.......2000-03-15

My husband received several books on being a dad (or a supportive "pregnant" husband) but they were all pretty intense books. This one is different. It's casual, informative, simple, accessible. It does a great job describing babies' developmental stages, how important Daddy is at that time, and some neat games or activities you can use to interact. It's really a valuable book for any parent, but I thought it was an especially nice book for its target audience, a busy new Dad.
