Simply the best.......2005-09-01

Once again, Taschen has put forth a wonderfully illustrated and highly enjoyable publication. The ads are superb. The reader can truly immerse themselves in popular culture and daily life in the United States during the 1930s. What I most appreciate is the fact that Taschen presents the materials as is; they let the ads speak for themselves. I consider it one of the best resources of popular culture from the era.

The "Other" Social History Book.......2004-02-29

You expect a book like this to be fun, and it is! The hard sell approach, the inflated claims, and the infamous phrase, "It isn't brand X if it doesn't say Y!" (as if your brain is scrambled) ... it's all hilarious now. And even when these techniques get tedious, the drawings and paintings are colorful and well-designed by themselves.

The ads don't mention the Depression, but you can see it in the phrases "stretch your dollars" and "these days..." That's a technique auto makers adopted after Sept. 11th, as in "we're getting America moving again with 0% financing." In that sense, ad makers fashioned a social history that belongs alongside stories of travelling Okies and bread lines. These ads showed what people hoped for, what they wanted to become. And that's just as important as where they were. So while post-Sept. 11th ads wanted to get the family back to the dinner table, so Depression-era folks wanted to get their friends back for champagne and elegant dinner parties.

Still, there is enough variety here to reflect many points of view and design style. Some ads were clearly ahead of their time. Some were still mired in Victorian imagery. A few are really shocking, like the public service ad with a drawing of a sinking Lusitania with the headline, "The Lusitania Sank. So What of It?" (It was an ad for World Peaceways.)

I am no historian or designer or advertiser ... but I found this book mind-blowingly fun.

Hucksters in hard times........2003-05-19

Taschen's fourth volume of the All-American Ads series provides a big look back to the day before yesterday. Steven Heller provides a short overview of the decade and explains that despite the Depression magazines, in which most of these ads appeared, had very high circulations. For a few cents readers could escape the reality of everyday life and be entertained by the features and the colourful advertisements. Naturally there is no real mention of the Depression though some of the ads sport the little NRA symbol and the words `We do our part'

The format of this book is the same as the others, nine sections (Alcohol and tobacco, Automobiles, Consumer products, Entertainment, Fashion and beauty, Food and beverages, Industry, Interiors and finally Travel) provide whole, two or four ads to a page and fortunately none of them are angled or overlap. The digital reproduction of the 1500+ ads is excellent, it is always a problem to reproduce anything that is already printed because it can create screen clash but these are reproduced with clean colors and sharp lines (thanks to 175 dpi).

Most of these ads are copy and picture heavy, stylish use of white space and clever typography was years away, though three ads for Pierce Arrow autos on pages 176-177 stand out because they do seem very modern. Illustrations rather than photography were the main visual elements with headlines and copy used to fill any space that was left.

This as a super book if you are interested in social history or want to see how copywriters created product desire more than sixty years ago or you are just curious about things your grandparents reminisce about. Maybe they remember the 1932 ads for the Pitcairn autogiro, after all no home should be without one!

Does anyone know how Robert C. Kammerling died or where I could find information on him??? I knew him but only for 1 year and i am trying to figure out more about him.
I have heard that this book is very helpful and is one of the best books on gemology.

Classic Text which is the basis of GIA classification.......2006-06-04

Cornelius Hurlbut (1906 ,2005) a Harvard University Geologist and Robert Kammerling (c1947, 1996) of the Gemological Institute of America wrote an excellent text on Gem Identification. The book became the basis of the GIA course of colored stones and colored stones identification which are required for the GIA Graduate Gemologist designation. Chapters 1-7 give basic facts on origin of gems, crystallography, chemical formulas, physical properties (hardness, specific gravity, heat conductivity), colors and optical properties. Chapters 6-7 also discuss equipment used in gem identification (specific gravity scales, heat testers, refractometer, reflectivity meters, polariscope, condensing sphere). The most important gem identification instrument is the refractometer and the authors give a detailed discussion of its uses which nicely supplements the GIA `lab manual'. Chapter 8 and 9 discuss the microscope and loupe and the spectrophotometer. Chapter 11 discusses synthetic stones (which have the same chemical, optical, and physical properties of the natural stones) and imitation stones (which merely resemble the natural stones.) The other chapters discuss enhancement, fashioning and the properties of stones on the GIA gem identification "a" and "b" lists.

colorful accurate review.......2007-03-30

Colored Diamonds is a beautiful book, beautifully presented, beautiful photographs, and interesting useful information. In one splash, GIA and G&G are again in front of everyone else. I enjoyed this book so much that I sent a note to the Editor-in-Chief asking her to let everyone who collaborated on it know how much I thought of this book and their effort in putting it together. I have been in this field for over 50 years, yet this work makes me realize that there is still so much that I do not know or only partially know. Information on historical colored diamonds is scattered among many publications and it is very useful to have it all together in one book. I would highly recommend it for anyone working in this field.

Ask anyone who has ever written for Gems & Gemology and you will hear of the strict, even painful editing process that every article must go through before publication. So you know that something by the staff itself is going to be of the highest editorial quality in the industry.
The first in a series of themed gemological subjects, this collection of 30+ years of its previously published articles on synthetic diamonds did not disappoint me. The preface lays it all out, explaining how they have grouped the articles into a mostly chronological order following the history of the development of the product and its impact on the diamond business.
I remembered many of the early articles, some of which were breakthrough studies, only to be superseded by new developments in later articles. In this book is the history of diamond synthesis, vis-à-vis gemology, and is a great way to fill in and/or update your knowledge on the subject. The bibliography is impressive and, as expected
from G & G, it is well-indexed.
I'll look forward to see how prescient the epilogue and comments from industry leaders turn out to be in the years to come.

There are not so much books about gemology, what makes the study of the gems a very difficult thing. The books above complete the space at literature and give both a reference and a study help. We could, almost, call them an encyclopedia about gems. In fact, if you bought these books you will not need to buy another title.

Children are different today.......2007-10-13

This book is a classic! If you have children, or work with children, you need to read this book. If it feels like children today are different than when you were growing up, it's because they are, vastly different. This book explains why, and how to support these differences.

In it the authors talk about chronic reverse polarity, which is very common. In the book He's Not Autistic But...: How We Pulled Our Son From the Mouth of the Abyss the author explains how to easily correct this. She also talks about her personal battle with autism that has become such an epidemic today.

Indigo Children ~ Super Sensitive Kids.......2007-08-17

I'd like to refer anyone reading this comment to the reader who posted this review: The Quintessential Resource On Indigos, April 23, 2005...scroll back and take a look. They said everything perfectly! Why be redundant?

I would like to clear up, though, the misconception that seems to be floating out there that these kids don't need boundaries, guidance. That's totally untrue. They DO. Moreso than the other children. These children need these things to grow up to be respectful adults. If not, they WILL grow up thinking it's a free for all. Yes, they are different..yes, they require tons more patience, but they are sooo worth it!

I hate labels. Of any kind. ADD, ADHD...even Indigo, Crystal, Rainbow, etc. Personally, I feel these children should be called "Super Sensitive Kids". By that, I'm talking about their inner energy and needing to channel it properly; anyway, that is for another topic:~) Please read the book with an open mind.

I hate this whole idea. I'm so tired of new agers sitting around doing nothing waiting for someone else to do all the work and save them. It's pathetic.

I also hate how this author wants to neatly categorize people into tiny little boxes and put one neat little label on them. Just the idea that an entire generation could be summed up in 1 sentence is insulting to any intelligent human being.

Am I an indigo kid? I don't know. I'm certainly in the age group and I certainly have a complete lack of respect for authority. I know who I am. I also can't stand hypocrisy and people who won't get things done for themselves. I am exceedingly empathic and can read people like a book, even over the internet. But I do not have ADD. I'm not here on some mission as a vanguard for a buncha little kids. I'm not here to save humanity from anything. Humanity should save itself. I have patience.

This book is just another example of a broken new ager praying that someone will tell her what to do.
