4 out of 5 stars Loved it, but knew what to expect.......2007-06-09

I did totally love this book, and had trouble putting it down. That being said - this is not a care guide, and is basically just a book of "fun facts". A lot if the information is common knowlege to anyone who has kept snakes for any length of time, and I didn't learn anything of real particular use in it, but it was fun to read. But then again, I wasn't really looking to find "that gerat lost secret that nobody else has ever known". If you are very new to snakes, or are interested in learning about snakes, or interested in someday purchasing your first snake it would probably be more informative - but is still basically just a fun read, and just has fun facts and tidbits.

3 out of 5 stars Not written by someone knowledgeable about snakes..........2005-12-05

While the format is cute, and it contains some interesting (but questionable) anecdotes, I feel that the author should have enlisted someone in the herp field to help her write this book. The "secrets" aren't really "secret" to many of us who have been keeping snakes for even a little while. The insertion of lizard material just makes it all the more random and disjointed.

Such basic information is better written in a more organized and instructional format to teach the beginner.

3 out of 5 stars Cute but not a Care Guide.......2005-08-02

If you want a cute book to read for entertainment and/or trivia this book is pretty good. If you are looking for a cae guide for your herps, this is not the book. I enjoyed parts of it but was expecting more health tips.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, and Cute.......2005-03-24

This book isn't going to help you if you have problems. It won't reveal anything vitally important about the care and maintenance of your herp. But, it is a cute little book, and fun to page through if you're looking for esoteric knowledge. From the title, I really was expecting something more ... useful to a keeper, but for a collection of reptile trivia, it's pretty good.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book!!!!!!.......2003-01-20

I own the Book "277 Secrets Your Snake (and Lizard) Wants You to Know. Unusual and Useful Information for Snake Owners and Snake Lovers." by Paulette Cooper. It is by far the best book I have ever read. I have gotten to understand much much more of the snake world just by reading the first 100 pages out of 181 pages. Its not your regular factual/formal book it isn't that formal at all, it is clearly stated in the book. There are interesting facts, stories that you'll have to read to believe, and extremely useful information for snake owners all over the globe.
So instead of doing hours of research online just to find a simple answer to a simple question, just order the book, check the index and find what your looking for. This wonderful book has helped me in ways I can't even try to explain, all I know is that ever since I read the first page of that book, my pet corn snake (Buddy) and hognose snake (Cobra) have been living the good life.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Book!.......2007-01-11

8 Yr old really enjoys this book. He said it helps him to figure out the kind of reptiles that he has seen outside. He even has a salamander he found and it has a lot of info and facts on it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent learning tool........2001-01-23

I purchased 5 books of this series for my five year old daughter for Christmas, as she is a nature lover and loves anything to do with science. After reviewing these books before giving them, we decided to use them as part of our science program for our home school. These books have bright and colorful pictures, short accurate explanations of the animal, their habitat, eating habits, and even some of the popular anecdotes that go along with the animal. It has the appropriate warning for studying certain animals. What we enjoy most is many of these animals can be found in our back yard to furthur study. Each book deals with three types of animal, such as snakes, salamanders and lizards. They are separated into sections dealing with each type. At the end of the section is a wonderful hands-on project the child can basically do on their own within the recommended age group (9-12) or with some assistance for a younger age group like my daughter. My 5 year old begs us to read these books to her and loves the projects. I highly recommend this bokk and others in the series for those who want their children to learn about nature and how to respect it. I can't wait to obtain the remaining books of this series.

    5 out of 5 stars Snakes, Salamanders, and Lizards-- A Children's Delight!.......2000-04-19

I used Diane Burns' book as an aid for nature programs while I was working as a naturalist. Each animal is depicted in full color with pertinent details and hazards to watch for. Young kids love the colorful pictures of their favorite "slimy" creatures, while older kids can read the information and learn where and when to find the creatures. I found that Burns' book works better than a more sophisticated source when working with children, as it is written at their level -- but adults can also gain much knowledge from the information. My congratulations to Diane Burns for writing such a wonderful book!

5 out of 5 stars Kids Will Love This!.......2006-09-05

This is a fine starter book for kids interested in different animals...it's the first one we've read in the Animals in Order series. What I like a great deal about this is that it takes time at the beginning of the book to look at (briefly) what makes an animal a snake or lizard (the characteristics), then goes in to the "order" of living things which details the kingdom, phylum and class of snakes (with a handy visual chart for reference, great for younger kids, so they can SEE how it works rather than just read it or have it read to them).

The book also talks a bit about where snakes and lizards fit into food chain, then goes from there into an overview of fourteen species of snakes and lizards, complete with full page, color photographs for each one (our boy loved this best), which were quiet nice.

Each animal is given a full description including the Family, Genus and Species as well as the general size range!! I was impressed with and pleased to find that at the end of the book the author/publisher also included a short recommended reading list and some really great web pages to do more research on...the kids in particular LOVED this!

We had a great time reading this and I hope read more of these very soon! I give it a solid two thumbs up, a great starter resource for young readers!

4 out of 5 stars Great life lesson story, but illustrations are lacking..........2005-07-09

I really enjoyed reading this story to my boys. They were laughing and very intently listening during the story, which means they really liked it. It was a very creative way to teach a very important lesson about how to settle unfair challenges in life without being violent, and also to be patient during those times. We were dissappointed though with the artwork, but that isn't what makes a good story. This is the first book I have ever felt strongly enough about to take the time to write a review, so that means something.

        3 out of 5 stars Update of a Traditional Tale: Lizard's Home.......2000-06-02

Lizard's Home has it's basis in an old hispanic folk tale. A version for older readers appears in Joe Hayes' Watch Out For Clever Women where the villan trying to cheat using the black and white pebbles is a money lender. The simple, but very colorful and expressive illustrations of the snake and lizard in this story are sure to captivate younger readers. The clever little lizard is able to outwit the wily snake without any violence. This would be an excellent read-aloud for kindergarten and first grade story time.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and authoritative.......2000-11-19

This professional-looking hardcover is fairly small and not at all intimidating in appearance. Instead, the Reptile and Amphibian Problem Solver is a practical and readable reference for the beginner as well as an expert. A decent amount of space is allocated to selecting vivaria and substrates, creating an ambient atmosphere, and heating/lighting (although more information would be appreciated on the former, especially on the subject of keeping the vivarium cool, which is a constant challenge in the warmer climes). Reptile and amphibian care is listed separately. The entries are organized according to classification, similar species listed in a single group. Each entry is accompinied with brilliant photography, a Q&A section, and useful (although cluttered) rubrics concerning minimum vivarium dimensions, appropriate diets, temperature ranges, etc. Some entries also have breeding data rubrics. Common as well as fairly exotic species are covered (the book keeps an appropriately cautious tone when describing the exotics, which are likely to be captured in the wilderness and thus sometimes unsuitable for keeping). As an endorsement, I must say that after reading the Problem Solver I was confident enough to go and buy my first reptile.

I work in a large pet store and every day we have questions on reptiles and amphibians. Whenever I cannot answer the question, I go get this book from the shelf. Most of the time I find an answer in it. I find answers to almost Every question from "what should this animal eat" to "Help my animal is sick!" If you are a new reptile owner or just have questions, get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Step-by-Step Relief Carving: Mastering the Use of Light and Perspective in Woodcarving.......2007-09-20

This book is a GREAT place to start learning about relief carvings. This is a step by step manual on how to make the MOST out of a piece of wood. Very detailed, complete, right down to the last detail of the carving. Want to learn relief carving?...GET THIS BOOK!! A+++++

            3 out of 5 stars just one?.......2007-02-12

While this book does go into some detail it only encapsulates one real relief carving. There are many examples from which the authors could have chosen but they selected one, extremely complex example from which to work. A more graduated lesson might have been in order to accommodate a more realistic learning curve.

5 out of 5 stars Relief Carving Tips.......2006-03-13

I feel this book is well worth its cost. As an inexperienced carver I was looking for some detailed hints that would improve my work. Mr. Schroeder has some valuable advice that we should all implement when creating a masterpiece. This book is geared to the relief carver.

5 out of 5 stars Do really want to know how to make great reliefs?.......2005-10-13

This book is exactly what its title says. If you are new to relief carving, you might think that realistic relief carving involves simply in the carving half round. But this approach will not be satisfactory. This book shows to how even very shallow relief can be amazingly realistic if proper perspective is used. The book has several simple projects in the beginning to help you master the basic principles. Then you can carve a very nice nautical scene which is detailed step by step with ample photos. He uses both standard wood carver's hand tools such as gouges and also power tools including a router and a dremel. I rated this a 5 because of the efective way the content is organized and the detail provided.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners.......2005-08-28

I haven't yet purchased this book - but had a chance to take a good long look at it at bookstore.

I have not yet applied this book yet - b/c I'm still evaluating which carving set I want to invest in - but this book looks great for a beginner. It focuses on one or 2 projects with great detail graphically and verbally. It covers basics like transferring design that you don't see in alot of carving books - and walks you through each step w/o leaving details out. It assumes you're a beginner and I look forward to using this book as one of my first purchases when I decide when / what took set to purchase.

I didn't give it 5 stars - b/c I haven't used it - but my gut says I may be upgrading my rating after applying the info to some wood and tools

                Book Description

Dr. Levy believes that very few overweight people are overweight because they are too lazy to go for a walk. Every obese person who has struggled to lose weight know what an average breakfast, lunch, and dinner should look like. For various reasons, however, they are unable to follow an average meal plan. This book explains why.

Understanding Obesity focuses on the causes of obesity. Ninety percent of obesity is caused by mood disorders, chronic tiredness, chronic pain, chronic gastrointestinal discomfort, or binge eating disorder. You cannot treat obesity until you treat the cause. In fact, in 40 percent of cases, treating the cause results in significant weight loss without any special diets. Dr. Levy, a specialist in the treatment of obesity, also promotes cognitive therapy to help obese people refocus on the physical cues of hunger and fullness, since a large percentage of overweight people may have a poorly developed ability to recognize true hunger and true fullness signals from their body.

This authoritative book deals with: diet plans and fads, surgery, diet drugs, obesity in childhood, and medical problems associated with obesity.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book for Anyone Who Has, or Thinks that They Have a Weight Challenge.......2006-03-08

This is not a long book, but it is full of good advice that should really be given to anyone who has - or thinks that they have - a weight issue.

Dr Levy's emphasis on an individualized approach is just what we have also been doing for almost three decades, and it is demonstrably superior to the "One size fits all" approach. We are all biochemically, metabolically and psychologically different, and the systems involved in the maintenance of weight are amongst the most complex in the body.

I also like the way in which he integrates endocrinological and psychological approaches into his program. To ignore those is not just disrespectful, but terribly inefficient. Many factors can lead people to have problems with weight management.

One surprise about the book is that the subtitle is "The Five Medical Causes," yet it was difficult to find them! He cites a great many medical causes, and they are all correct!

I would also like to have seen some discussion about the use of the subtle systems of the body and the tremendous value of bringing a transpersonal perspective to bear on weight management. But then I suppose that he wouldn't have left me anything to write about!

5 out of 5 stars Truly helps understand the mind body disconnect........2005-09-27

Dr. Levy provides a great wealth of information regarding the struggle with obesity. I would say that if you are not obese, but have been struggling with trying to lose weight over and over this book would be a great help.

Having worked with people who are trying to lose just a small amount of weight, just saying eat right and exercise fail for the same reasons they do for someone obese. Many people say that want to lose weight, but have not truly discovered a meaningful reason for change. Many of the other aspects of disordered eating and FEAR of change apply to the slightly overweight as well.

A truly insightful book about the struggle with weight. The insight Dr. Levy provides is spot on. If only more people would hear this information and not all the "weight-loss" rip offs. Highly recommend, easy to read, case studies provided illustrate perfectly.

                5 out of 5 stars A beautifully sane approach.......2002-10-06

Dr. Levy points out the major error within the diet and weight control industry: for most people obesity is first of all a symptom.

He offers excellent insights and suggestions on ways to regain your communication with your body so that you can learn to pay attention to the most knowledgeable person of all when it comes to deciding what and when you should eat-- yourself.

No one asks the person with a fever to "just stop that elevated temperature" and yet most diet and weight control "experts" repeatedly tell people with elevated weight to "just lose that weight." I sometimes fantasize about smashing a cheesecake in their faces.

5 out of 5 stars worth more than any other hundred books on obesity.......2001-11-03

The author of this small book has really listened to overweight patients and has an analysis of obesity I have never heard of before: that it is not a single disorder, but a SYMPTOM of many different problems and health considerations unique to each obese individual.

Dr Levy, a Canadian, is far more intelligent, realistic, and interested in his patients than any American MD of my experience, far more sensitive and sympathetic than American shrinks. He does not seem to have his time squeezed into teeny, pressurized encounters that prevent him from communicating with and coming to understand his patients. Over a long period -- years -- of trial-and-error explorations, he and his patient gradually discover what problems prevent the patient from eating self-responsively, and address them one by one as they show up.

Just reading this book is extraordinary. You get a glimpse of what medicine might have been, had it not been hijacked by the forces that want to force everything into a business mold, however bad the fit, however horrible the resulting nightmare, and however much MORE rather than LESS expensive the results.

But even if all U.S. MDs WERE forced to read this book, it would not help, since they are no longer free to practice medicine. Patients, however, can benefit enormously from studying the book, working up their OWN case histories, and sorting out, as Dr Levy indicates is necessary in such cases, one by one, the problems like sleep apnea or other sleep disorders, mood disorders, predatory families, etc., which result in the disordered eating of which obesity is symptomatic. Unlike the cruel diet clubs that put overweight people through a weight loss process they know is bogus and will only revert to a heavier weight in time, this very methodic and gradual approach respects the obese individual, sticks to reality, and really helps. No other book is like it. Nowadays, it is rare to find a doctor even BOTHERING with obesity. People prefer to write about anorexia and bulimia. This is a terrific book by an impressive medical doctor.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive review of Obesity.......2001-05-08

All doctors should read this book. Dr Levy explains the real reasons why people overeat & offers a variety of ways doctors can assist people to lose weight & keep it off. His perceptions & sensitivity to the problems that the obese face when attempting to lose weight are a rare find. The best book on the subject, bar none.
