Excellent resource for informed swine producers.......1998-12-13

This edition of the Nutrient Requirements of Swine is an excellent resource for swine producers or feed manufacturers with some knowledge of swine nutrition. The edition in question provides excellent tables on nutritional requirements for all classes of swine and also provides some of the best tables available that describe the nutritional composition and quality of common feedstuffs used in swine feeds. A word of advice, however; it would be well advised for a person interested in this title to have at least a background in the nutrition of pigs. If the reader does not, then the information contained within will read much like Gray's Anatomy.

There is now widespread interest in the development of in vitro methods for assessing the digestibility of feedstuffs for monogastric farm animals, i.e. pigs and poultry. In vivo methods require the use of surgically modified animals, which is becoming less favored due to an increased awareness of animal welfare; such methods are also expensive and slow. A number of research groups around the world are now developing in vitro methods, and this book, based on a workshop held at the Rowett Research Institute in October 1990, presents our current knowledge of the subject. Contributors are leading authorities on the subject from Europe, North America and Japan. I liked this book very much. Since I am an agriculturalist, I was somewhat skeptical going in, but I consider it a solid piece of work.

It is a very thoughtful look at American culture through the porthole of the relationship of people to pigs.

Many people have commented on the plight of "family farmers" as affected by "integrated" agriculture, but they either have a political agenda or little real understanding. In this case, tremendous effort is made by the author to understand the business of pigs and pork, and changes in society and the pig industry. This description of the swine industry is a studied, objective viewpoint, even if it is incidental to the real purpose of the book.

Mainly, the book is a unique study of human beings and relationships to each other and other species, including pathogens. The book contains thought-provoking observations on life, death, culture, agriculture, multiculture, and communication.

There's also some humorous, but basically true observations about academia and faculty challenges, all in the context of "sh__ happens."

To people very close to the industry, there may be a few observations of the business in error, slightly skewed interpretations of events, and (very few) errors in describing technology. However these are insignificant to the intent and lessons to be learned, and should be forgiven. Industry insiders should be tolerent when reading some portions of Hog Ties, but it is well worth the effort to see an objective "outsider's" point of view.

There may be portions of the book that seem tedious to readers not interested in the swine industry or swine disease, but if those readers stay with the author through such depths, interesting parallels are drawn.

Judging portions of the book out of the context of the whole work could lead to misinterpretation.

This would be interesting to anyone, but should be required reading for those in agriculture.

Not an American book.......2007-10-06

I ordered this book last week in hopes of learning Marquetry. Well, little did I know that this book wasn`t written by an American in plain English, it is written by 2 Englishmen who reference things we are not familiar with in this country.. If you know your millimeters, centimeters and metrics you will be fine with the measurements.....but this book doesn`t even tell you that PVA glue is the old school Elmers glue. Another thing is the vagueness in which they teach......"keep the knife 2 degrees to the vertical"....which probably means tilt it 2 degrees....anyway, I`m sorry I bought this and will be looking for something better.

this is a book that is meant for beginers in the art of marquetry. i have 8 years experiance in the art. i did learn a little bit from the book.i would recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning marquetry.i would also recommend getting Paul Schurchs book and video and Marc Adams book and videos.

Best book on Marquetry.......2006-01-02

I have read this book from cover to cover and truly enjoy it. I find the book starts out with very simple hands on projects and continues GRADUALY to very complex. The book is well written and profusely illustrated. There are chapters describing all neccesary tools as well as many jigs. The authors are experts on teaching this subject! If you are a beginner this is the book to get! I have read several books on the subject and this beats them all combined. You will learn how to do beautiful marquetry projects from this book. BUY IT!

Everything You Need To Know About Doing the Impossible.......2005-06-14

I recently started to think of doing some inlay work. Nothing particularly fancy, but a little something to keep a box from being, well... just a box. To me it's a rather daunting proposition, one that involves as much luck and magic as it does skill. Marquetry, which is ithe creation of complex decorative forms out of veneer is high end inlay, and one of the true tests of craftsmanship in wood forms. Not being one to start out with something simply, The Marquetry Course was the text I finally selected as a how-to book.

Metcalfe and Apps do their best to present marquetry in a stepwise basis. Text, photographs, and drawings get the point across so that the only hurdle is the fear of trying in the first play. But marquetry isn't simple even when you understand how it is done. If you want to be original, you are faced with twin challenges of design and skill, and then you have to install the design on an object which you also designed and built. No mean accomplishment.

The book presents a set of traditional designs and uses them in projects. You will learn how to shade, construct, glue up, and finish each piece. Some are well past the 'amateur' level, but others are surprisingly simple. The book serves as inspiration as well as instruction, and I found a more than a few ideas that can be applied elsewhere as well. So even if you decide not to inlay that amazing rose, the book will still be a valuable asset.

Gardening pundit Ken Druse offers this small companion to 1994's The Natural Habitat Garden, his contribution to the rapidly-growing literature on choosing the right plant for the right conditions. It's somewhat limited by habitat, covering only meadow and prairie, woodlands, and water's edge (plus a special section on plants bearing ornamental seed pods and berries), but those who garden under those particular conditions will not find a neater little guide to plants that are both pretty and low-maintenance.

Excellent Book For Parents of Pre-Teens.......2006-07-06

I purchased this book looking for ways to talk to my boys (we have 10-year-old twins) about drinking, drugs, and smoking. What I didn't know is that there is an entire section on inhalants, (sometimes known as huffing). This is something that I know nothing about because this wasn't an issue when I was growing up. Children are most vulnerable to inhalants between the ages of 9 and 12, and because regular household items are used, it is not something that they have to got out and buy, and it they are not illegal.
This book is an excellent resource for parents. Book includes pictures and is VERY informative. It also tells you what to look for if you suspect your child is using.
This book should be mandatory reading for all parents!

Best resource since Parenting for Prevention

This book is the best resource I have found linking drug and alcohol use to brain function and brain dysfunction. Best of all, it is written in a way that parents can understand how it applies to their kids and use it. The stress on clear and appropriate communication without fear tactics is itself clear and without fear tactics. The info on drugs is excellent and, most of all, the authors are knowledgeable parents themselves and understand the role of parents and the issues they and their children face around drug and alcohol use.

This book gets across that the job of "prevention" is long-term; it requires the parent to KNOW the subject. The book is 100% reality and is knowledge based rather than authority based. Myths about many drugs are laid to rest. By dealing with facts, parents and kids reduce risk. Whether a drug is legal or illegal, soft or hard, liquid or pill, it's best to know the ingredients, their effects and side-effects.

I worked with kids for 30 years and then with parents whose kids were in trouble with drugs and alcohol for another 10. This book is the best new resource combining experience and science on this most difficult topic in at least 10 years.
