5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, highly recommended........2001-08-17

This is the best book available regarding the little-known and mysterious transient orcas. In addition to having a detail catolgue of each transient whale in B.C waters, the book analysis and discuss the distinct behaviour and hunting styles of the transients, which are completely different from the salmon-eating resident killer whales.

Futhermore, there are numerous rare and spectacualr photos showing transients launching into the air and attacking their preys. This shows why Killer Whales are called "killers". For while these whales do not attack or eat man, they are highly efficient predators, no marine mammal is safe from transient whales. Read this book and you will understand why.

5 out of 5 stars Mammal munching superstars.......2000-07-23

This is the definitive source for information on the transient or mammal hunting race of killer whales of the U.S. Pacific Northwest. If you are serious about learning what there is to know about these fascinating superpredators-this is THE book to buy. I am a naturalist on a whale watch boat in the San Juan Islands and we use this book constantly to inform our guests about the "alter egos" of our salmon eating Resident Orcas. Fabulous pictures and incredible stories.

5 out of 5 stars Reccomended by the accidental quilter.......2000-08-12

If you love Hawaiian quilting--this is a volume you shouldn't miss. This is not a "how to" manual. It is a history of classic Hawaiin quilts accompanied by color plates that left me spellbound. The designs are incredible and well worth study. I've held a fascination with the possible direct connection between early Hawaiian quilts and the Baltimore Album quilts of the the Eastern coast. This may be the only book with color plates of some of these beautiful early quilts that would offer clues to this connection. My favorite designs in this volume are Anthurium by Mary Manoi and Coconut and Pineapple by Meali'i Kalama. It is of no consequence to me that this is not an instructional manual as I do not anticipate ever being able to quilt one of these masterpieces. It is, however, a one of a kind book and I urge you to treat yourself while it remains in print. Mary Z. Cox

    Book Description

Imagine a paper-cut paradise. The captivating beauty of the Hawaiian Islands unfolds before your eyes with these original Hawaiian designs. Each applique pattern reveals an intricate shape that is representative of the splendor and culture of the islands. Bold graphics, contrasting fabrics, and graceful quilting characterize projects, such as Hibiscus Orchid Lei and Winds of Change. Polynesian design and new quilting patterns allow you to go beyond the typical echo quilting. Awed by the beauty of the islands and fascinated by their handwork, Ms. Fleming began making Hawaiian quilts more than 20 years ago. Over a dozen of her original quilt designs are featured, including an extraordinary variety of folded cutwork patterns and quilting designs that reflect a traditional approach to this style of quiltmaking. A brief overview of Hawaiian quilting and a glossary of Hawaiian terms will help you give special meaning to your quilt creation. Celebrate the history, philosophy, and natural beauty of an alluring locale in this exotic collection of patterns. AUTHORBIO: Vicky Fleming's orientation to the tropics began at an early age. When she was in third or fourth grade in Michigan, her teacher asked if east was to the left or right. Vicky answered, "Left." The teacher wouldn't budge on insisting that Vicky had given the wrong answer. The teacher hadn't specified "on the map," however, and in Vicky's mind, she was standing in Michigan looking toward Florida, so east was indeed on the left. REVIEW: Imagine a paper-cut paradise! 5 out of 5 stars Hawaiian Quilting - Elizabeth Root.......2005-08-18

Very well constructed book, with excellent drawings of patterns and thorough instructions included. There are additional graphics depicting suggested quilting ideas, which, for the novice hawaiian quilter, such as myself, is an excellent tool to create an outstanding finished result. Her patterns are full sized so you do not need to re-size the patterns to use them. You can trace or copy them for use. Overall, an excellent hawaiian quilting instruction book.

5 out of 5 stars An Hawaiian Quilting Must!.......2004-02-11

I found this book to be absolutely great!! There is a great variety of easy, medium, and more challenging blocks to complete in this book. Also, there is a good variety of designs amongst the blocks. Each block is represented in color on the front and back covers. The rest of the book is in black and white. Root also gives you an idea of how each block could be quilted. Although I only have 1 thing that I would change, and it's probably just my own personal curiousity but nonetheless, I wish the blocks had a little tid bit of their own history saying why that design came to be immortalized in a quilt. The book still deserves 5 stars!

Whether you like cats or not this benchmark book will no doubt be a favorite for years to come. For the first time you will find a collection of larger wall size to bed patterns in one book. All with full size patterns on two pull out inserts. Each of the ten patterns has a corresponding miniature size pattern (which can be easily enlarged) showing multiple color adaptations and each has a coordinating pillow size block. The finished designs are shown illustrated and photographed.

A portion of the sale of this book goes to the Hawaii Humane Society to help lost or unwanted cats and kittens find a loving home.

4 out of 5 stars applique in your spare time.......2007-09-26

This hawaiian quilt applique book provides pictures and patterns for making interesting, nature oriented hawaiian quilts. You can adapt the patterns to basic applique, make different size quilts and use the motifs for specialized projects. Don't be surprised, there are few pictures of cats. I can't wait to make a few myself.

    4 out of 5 stars Cats Rule!.......2007-08-23

This is another wonderful book by Elizabeth Root with excellent Hawaiian quilt patterns. The designs can be made in any size from pillow to large wall size with enlarging. The cats are not part of the patterns but fabric photos or applique of cats on top of the Hawaiian designs would be really special.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Poakalani: Hawaiian Quilts Vol 1.......2005-08-18

This book is a good book for the beginner hawaiian quilter. The patterns are full sized and very simplistic. There is a nice variety of them with the addition of quilting suggestions once the applique portion is completed. My only negative comment would be the lack of color photos in the beginning of the book. The first 10 pages include detailed instructions on how to create your own hawaiian quilt block, complete with black and white photos to illustrate each step. These photos, because of the lack of color, are difficult to see clearly what is being explained. If this book were printed using color, it would be an excellent tool for the beginner. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a place to start hawaiian quilting.

    5 out of 5 stars Great designs.......2003-11-17

I am fairly new to Hawaiian quilting; I am nearly finished with my fourth block and I think that the designs in this book are great. The directions in this book have you cut the design from the fabric and then baste it to the background. To anyone starting I would probably suggest trying the freezer paper method instead because I would be afraid of any raveling of the fabric. Other than that the designs are creative and imaginative. I cannot wait to try the designs in Poakalani's other two volumes.

    4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Designs.......2001-05-22

I own both this book and its sister (Volume I), and have the honor of attending quilting classes taught by John and his daughter Cissy.

The designs in this book are elegant, and, unlike many designns by other artists, capture both the beauty and spirit of the flowers and plants they represent.

The instructions at the beginning of the book are very helpful. My only complaint is that the overall print quality is rather low, so that it is hard to see the stich detail in some of the b&w photographs.

With vivid colors and breathtaking designs, the Hawaiian quilt captures the exotic beauty of the Islands and celebrates Hawaiian culture. Made with aloha and given as a symbol of love, most Hawaiian quilt designs are abstract renditions of Hawai`i's stunning tropical foliage. While the flowers that inspired the design may only last a few hours, the quilt is a tangible reminder of the aloha with which it was made.

If you are looking for a book to inspire your quilter's creativity, you've found it. The many illustrations of unique quilts inspired by the native Hawaiians' original quilt style are colorful, vibrant, and unique.

This fascinating work provides state-of-the-art information on phenolic compounds in fruits. Written in a concise format, it covers qualitative aspects by demonstrating the diversity of phenolic features in the major fruits of economic importance. It extensively covers the role played by phenolic compounds in the quality of fruits, with regard to organoleptic characteristics and also as a parameter involved in enzymatic browning and other modifications which take place during fruit processing. This easy-to-read resource particularly emphasizes beverages made from fruits and the use of phenolic compounds in the detection of adulteration. This reference is indispensable to researchers in fundamental fields (plant physiologists, phytochemists, biochemists) as well as engineers and technologists working on practical applications in fruits.

          Book Description

What were the common childhood experiences of 700 eminent adults? Among things, they disliked school; their families valued education; they had strong mothers; and they grew up feeling "different" from others. This exciting update of the 1964 classic includes information from "Three Hundred Eminent Personalities" (1978), as well as from new biographies published in the last six years. Key findings include:

-Most had at least one ambitious parent who was striving and driving.

          -Their parents were highly opinionated

-Their parents often held unconventional opinions that were shocking, even antagonistic, to others.

-Many of the parents--especially mothers--dominated their children's lives.

-As children, few liked school, and still fewer liked their teachers.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating to read in its own right.......2004-08-10

Also available in a hardcover edition (0910707561, $39.95), this newly published, updated, and expanded second edition of Ted Goertzel and Ariel Hanzen's Cradles Of Eminence: Childhoods Of More Than 700 Famous Men And Women features the childhood biographies of more than 700 outstanding personalities. These sketches of the formative years of distinguished individuals reveal amazing insights into factors that can contribute to greatness, particularly in todays demanding and ever-changing world. Fascinating to read in its own right, and a wealth of anecdotal information about the youthful struggles of truly remarkable people including Alfred Hitchcock, Oprah Winfrey, Helen Keller, The Dalai Lama, Pablo Picasso, and many more.

          5 out of 5 stars A classic that's great!.......2004-05-21

In grad school, we used to say that a classic is a book that was written in a foreign language and that no one reads. "Cradles of Eminence" is a classic, but it's wonderful. And it's fun. It's even well written. Who would have guessed?

I picked up the new edition because I remember studying the findings in psych classes years ago and because my kids seem to be very bright (no comments about probable paternity, please).

The book is a hoot. Tale after tale of famous folks' childhoods: enough anecdotes to keep one appearing brilliant for a thousand dinner parties. The analyses of what makes a great person great - the substance of the book's look at eminent people's childhoods - are well done (and the lessons of the book)...but they are no where as much fun as the stories and anecdotes. Great stuff on overprotective mothers (including Mao, FDR, Toulouse-Lautrec), hatred of school (almost all), love of learning (most), etc.

For what it's worth, the updates from relatives of the original authors is worthwhile (from a son and a neice -- makes sense given the book's topic: Yes?). I mean who wants to only know about Edison's, Twain's or Tolstoi's upbringing when you can also have juicy bits about the early homes of Oprah, George W, and Hillary.

I guess I could use the analyses of how to raise extraordinary kids...OK, more correctly, analyses of how extraordinary people were raised. In my next life, I'll read more to my kids, make sure their mother is constantly supportive and praising, discuss important political and social stuff at the dinner table, etc. I know I'm doing well on one count: My kids parents are strongly opinionated. That's one of the characteristics of parents of successful kids.

          5 out of 5 stars A great perspective.......2004-04-02

This book is a fascinating look at the family patterns of eminent individuals across many generations. I couldn't put it down. If you like biographies, this is the ultimate collection of interesting stories.
