4 out of 5 stars How to track down all of your favorite player's cards.......2004-05-05

Of course Beckett puts out what is pretty much considered the definitive price guide for baseball cards, which is also the place to go to if you are looking for a complete list of all the cards in a given year that you are working on (six cards to finish the 1953 Topps set and only four cards to go on the 1966). I also have my "Team Baseball Card Checklist" for working on Yankees cards by companies other than Topps. I do not have a need for the "Beckett Baseball Card Alphabetical Checklist," but I can see exactly what sort of collector who would value this book, namely those who are trying to get all of the cards for their favorite player. Of course, that was a lot easier to do in the olden days when there was pretty much just one major baseball card company producing cards. I shudder to think of how many dozens of cards come out each year for Derek Jeter or Alex Rodriguez. But if your favorite player is anyone from Henry Aaron to Jerry Zimmerman, then this is the book that will tell you what you are looking for when you hit the shops and shows (actually some guy made the majors this year who replaced Hammerin' Hank as the player whose name appears first, but I do not remember his name).

As always, the good doctor provides more than well over a thousand pages devoted to players from A to Z. The introduction section contains sage advice on how to collect that covers everything from obtaining and preserving your cards to the differences between collecting and investing. There is also practical advise on how to use the alphabetical checklist. The target market for this particular checklist might be relatively small, but collectors will certainly appreciate having this available (I cannot speak to investors). Collectors of older cards will benefit even more from picking up this checklist because you do not need to pick up an updated version. There are thousands of new cards coming out each year, many of them featuring players who will never make it to the major leagues in the great quest to have the first official rookie card for the next Barry Bonds or Kerry Wood, but they are not making any more cards of the baseball cards of our youth.

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" for card collectors.......2006-03-20

This is very simple. If you collect baseball cards, you need ths book. It's just that easy!!!

5 out of 5 stars A must for card collectors.......2006-02-23

This book is an absolute necessity for baseball card collectors who are in search of specific players. The book alphabetically lists every player who has appeared on a baseball card. Not only does it list the major companies (like Topps), it does an excellent job of listing locally issued cards. It includes minor league cards as well. If you are looking for a specific player's cards, this is the best place to find every card produced of that player.
The only downside to this book is that it is fairly quickly outdated due to the glut of cards on the market. Back in the day, a great player like Hank Aaron might have 1 regular card and maybe 5-10 special or regional cards each year. Now, a player like Albert Pujols might have over 100 total each year.
That downside cannot be avoided, though. With that in mind, this book cannot do much more.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST.......2000-04-21

THIS BOOK HELPED ME AND MY COLLECTOR FRIENDS SO MUCH , THAT I HAD TO GIVE IT TO ONE OF THEM WHO DOES NOT LIVE IN THE USA, AND THAT IS WHY I AM NOW BUYING MY SECI=OND COPY. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

4 out of 5 stars A checklist for the cards of your favorite basketball stars.......2004-05-21

Of course Beckett puts out what is pretty much considered the definitive price guide for basketball cards, which is also the place to go to if you are looking for a complete list of all the cards in a given year that you are working on (I am currently trying to finish both a 1971-72 Topps and the Fleer 1986-87). I do not have a particular need for the "Beckett Basketball Card Alphabetical Checklist, Volume 2," but I can appreciate that there are collectors who would value this book, namely those who simply want to collect all of the cards for their favorite players. True, this was a lot easier to do in the days or yore when there was just one major basketball card company producing cards each year. Now look at how many dozens of cards there are each year for a Kobe Bryant or a LeBron James. You might have been luck if your favorite player is Jerry West or Magic Johnson, but then most dealers are going to have star cards in a separate place in their stores or at shows. However, if you are trying to track down all the cards for players from your alma maters, say, all the New Mexico Lobos in the pros from Mel Daniels to Kenny Thomas, then this book will be a big help. Because this book is cross-referenced by college teams, it is a super big help in that regard.

As always, the good doctor provides over 300 pages devoted to basketball players from A to Z. There are thousands of new cards coming out each year and at that end of the spectrum you are never going to catch up, but for those of us who enjoy collecting the cards of the players we watched in our younger days, this is a helpful checklist.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Authentic, Clear, Beautiful.......2007-06-09

This book is for people who know the basics. This book is for people who want to make a lei similar to the real, nicer, more celebratory type used and given by the people of Hawaii. This book is not for someone who wants to learn how to crochet even though the techniques employed are very simple, mostly single crochet. Ms. Tanaka and Ms. Masaki do not take up space explaining basics you can learn in another book. This is strictly geared toward the goal of producing an astounding variety of beautiful crocheted lei.

The finished effect of this type of lei is remarkably realistic if you know what the genuine article looks like. Tourists only see those leis on hat bands and during the Aloha Parade in Waikiki, on those special horse-riding people (can't remember what they're called or the symbolism). These are not the type of leis given dozens at a time to tourists stepping off a plane or boat. These are given to loved ones. To respected ones. To people we know.

Eyelash yarns can be expensive, so most of the lei in this book will run you about $30-35 in materials. I do not like eyelash yarns in other uses either, but for this, IT JUST WORKS. It really does. In Hawaii, recipients of these kind of crocheted leis are awed, appreciative, and often humbled by the work and time the giver put in and bestowed upon him or her. Often, after the leid occasion, the lei is put on display in the home or kept in the car as a reminder and for good luck.

Yes, children do like this type of lei too, but they are rarely recipients. You can see why.

A worthy purchase, but obviously not for everyone. You would not make one for someone who was not aware of its significance or the heritage of the lei-making craft.

4 out of 5 stars Easy and Fun Aloha Project!.......2005-09-30

This book is written in an easy to understand manner, with lots of helpful "real-world" suggestions. I was able to complete a four row lei in about five hours (and I'm a relative beginner to reading crochet instructions!) My only complaint is that the pictures could have been clearer - it's really hard to see the stitch definition when they are using Fun Fur!

4 out of 5 stars good, but i expected more.......2005-01-04

i absolutely love eyelash crochet leis and have been looking forward to getting this book for a long time so i could finally make them for myself. the designs are gorgeous and the list of school colors is quite handy. the instruction on crochet stitches was not very clear, however, and i'm still not secure in how to do the stitches. the pictures in this section are not the best either. this is the only weakness i have encountered so far.

5 out of 5 stars Make great gifts of aloha!.......2004-11-24

I paid $35 for a beautiful red ginger "eyelash" lei while visiting Honolulu two months ago. I'm originally from Hawaii and hadn't been home in six years. I can tell you these leis can look authentic if you choose the right colors and yarn textures. This book is wonderful and easy-to-follow. However, it took me time to identify yarn types and figure out where to buy the yarns here on the Mainland. (Much of the book's suggestions on where to purchase yarns apply to Hawaii residents.) Specialty yarn shops in your area will probably carry the yarns, which is kind of pricey. It's worth it. However, I found the local Walmart (Fabric & Crafts section) has a great selection of the yarns mentioned in the book. I found this hobby can get quite expensive because of the yarns.

After you've done a few of the leis mentioned in the book, you will feel inspired to create your own designs. Trust your gut and have fun. I'm looking forward to "Making Eyelash Crochet Leis 2" when it comes out!

4 out of 5 stars Leis are fun.......2004-09-01

The instructions in this guide are clearly written. The color pictures help a lot too.

Crochet experience needed I would say medium.

These are fun and can be used for more than just leis. Can be adapted to be purse handles or boas...instructions for that are not included but is easy enough to do.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for crafts.......2007-08-11

We bought this book so we could make eyelash yarn leis for a trip to Hawaii. We bought some beautiful yarn leis in Kauai and they ended up being stolen. After feeling bad about loosing those, we decided to learn how to make our own.

The book fairly well describes the eyelash yarn process. We needed to learn how to crochet independently, but that was fairly easy using some simple websites. We were able to get the supplies we needed at a Michael's store and Hobby Lobby. So far, we're not skilled enough to make great leis, but on par with some we've seen selling for $40-$50 in Hawaiian tourist stores.

How alive they were in their picture. Death of the Dream frontispieces its title page with a photo taken when the houses it chronicles were as alive as the faces in the picture. It is well-preserved, showing a family of eight seated at a linen-covered table (lace or embroidery beyond either their means or self-identity), half-curtains on the window above, one man the only person to gaze into the camera (the patriarch, surely, though he looks middle-aged); the others in reflective downward gaze as though having just returned from a burial. Women, their hair up in buns or braids, wearing dresses collared to the neckline, skirts to the floor. Above them a framed family photo and clock on the wall (catalog-bought, no doubt, whose ornate carving seems incongruous given the tablecloth). Only cups and saucers are on the table; it must have been tea time. The tiny symbols of the good life in those days are not many, but abundant-the pitcher of milk and honey in a jar, lamp in the center, side dishes, salt, the pooch snoozing contentedly under the table.

It is the beauteous young woman on the left who most grabs the eye-not for her looks but because the picture was taken c. 1890 and her grandchildren's grandchildren's children are among us, perhaps looking at this book. What would she tell them? That a pretty summer sky of peach-hued clouds is also a sky of no law and no mercy? She knew this, said it in the avoidance of her gaze. Prosperity teetered alone on the last edges of the day, and one day during her lifetime the remnants of economy shifted irrevocably out from under the livelihood of the faces in that photo, as it did thousands of others too. The family farm is a factory farm now.

Leaving behind . . . what? The fears of the landholding life, the women alone pushing the pram, the humdrums of the hearth, the half a loaf uneaten, the missing shingles on the roof, the walls that need paint, the averted eyes of the friends at church, the grief recurring in husband-is-gone dreams. Then or now?

          All in a picture.

Good, solid, uneventful countryside faces, as plain and hardworking as their shoes. Not the setpiece farms of TV and movies, but of gardens and furrows and drudgework and rain, lived in a prosperity affording perhaps but one portrait in a lifetime. Lives not of comforts or goods or openings at theater, but of the sun and the wind and the dusk and the summer, the indomitable spirit of the Plains, and the immense span of years that was their being then, and will be until the last house in this book is no long evident a house.

Somewhere along the way from that picture to this book, the Plow That Broke The Plains was broken by those plains.

William Gabler is as good a tale-teller as he is a photographer, and his text is so informative one can read it several times and still notice things anew. His pictures have an overlit quality that does not come across as overexposure (he's too accomplished a photographer for that) but as his wish to wring the last of the light out of a darkened dream. His pictures are so much more than "pictures." Only in ink upon paper do we see these old buildings defecting remnant by remnant into the wither of time. On the paper of our minds, thanks to Mr. Gabler, we see so much more. He has captured the dismemberment of a culture, the culture of the standalone farming family who fed a country from an annual turn of sod under the annual turn of sky.

Simple, seemingly, his photos, seeing that which is invisible but there. That one over there, atop the low roll of hill, there lived Widow X or Widower Y, seeing their lives through to the end on the soil where their lives were made, wresting from the earth each year's glean not of wheat by the bushel but carrots and radishes and plums by the basket. We see them mirrored in Mr. Gabler's houses, their forlornity, stature much shorter than it once was, back unbent but a hand that trembles. Not a bitter harvest by any reckoning, but an ever-harsher one, yes, that.

Once they were content. Once they were spiritually strong, for the vastness of nature under the unceasing sky informed the upright steeple on the horizon where God really lived. But now not. It's self-evident from the fact that these pictures, these houses, exist. Not dying, but dwindling. Losing their rooflines and paint as a dowager loses her strands of hair. Metaphors not of decay but of deconstruction, yielding back to nature the cellulose and pigment and glass and iron which nature once bestowed. We see in them not old wood and window, but ourselves. The economy these plains and these people made possible ran away from them, off to the cities, just as it is running away from us, content under our G

Our selves are in Mr. Gabler's pictures, for these empty husks of house are where the culture of consumption is taking us. Not unto death as these provisioners of the past were taken, but into discard, our lives a blister-pak on the trash of the used; all to a failure to partner with the God our souls and religions say we have but our horizons do not confirm. How we wish, like the farmers who built these houses, to elope off with Destiny the Giver, not the Taker, of life's things.

Their goods may not have been great. They were.

4 out of 5 stars Death of the Dream: Farmhouses in the Heartland.......1999-11-29

Published by Afton Historical Society Press, Afton, Minnesota, Death of the Dream is beautifully illustrated with photos of old Heartland balloon frame farmhouses, mostly from Cottonwood County, Minnesota. Bill Gabler, the author and photographer, tells in great detail the history of these simple, frame structures that were the predominant style of homes in early farming communities in the Heartland. Gabler is an excellent story-teller and photographer. Through his photos and narrative, he also chronicles the lives of the farm families who built and lived in these simple, unpretentious farm homes. By telling of the disappearance of these farmhouses in the Heartland, Gabler also tells the story of the disappearing family farms. This is an excellent historical accounting of an aspect of Americana that is fast disappearing. The book has also been made into a public television (KTCA-TV St. Paul, Minnesota) documentary by the same title.

The only fault I found with the book is that individual people and their personal stories are absent from both the photos and the history. The documentary, however, includes both of these.

            2 out of 5 stars Lacks depth.......2002-12-28

After reading the masterly work of Baucknam on Jude, I thought all the books in the series were similar. I was dissappointed. There is nothing extra. The greek analysis was okay, but that was all. No discussion on the historical, archeological material or the customs of that day. No comparison of scripture or how verses are linked to other parts of the bible..

It wasn't what I wanted, but it may be okay for others

4 out of 5 stars Best so-far on the Greek text but with some caveats.......2002-11-15

Smalley really has put together the best commentary on the Greek text of I, II, and III John we've got at this point. He is well-versed in the scholarship on these books and presents others' views well even when he disagrees. He is fairly good at sorting through the issues in a balanced way, giving good arguments for most of his conclusions.

His treatment of the historical setting for these books seems to go a bit beyond the evidence. In the spirit of Raymond Brown, Georg Strecker, and other contemporary scholars, Smalley seems to place much emphasis on reading these books as a response to how some had misinterpreted the Gospel of John, reconstructing a whole historical situation behind the letters reflecting this speculative scenario behind this so-called "Johannine community". While this sort of work is imaginative, it is hardly worthy of the name of historical scholarship. At best it can show us a possible background to the texts at hand.

Compared to Brown and Strecker, Smalley is a breath of fresh air. At times, Brown seems more sympathetic to the heretics John is confronting, and Smalley does seem to identify more with the elder and his concern for purity of maintaining the apostolic doctrine. Brown seems open to taking both the heretics and the orthodox on these matters as legitimate interpretations of the apostolic message, an approach that minimizes the apostolic message and ignores much of the indisputably earlier epistles. Strecker's work reflects outdated scholarship. His now outdated history-of-religions method, together with his placing these books well into the second century despite all the recent evidence to the contrary, makes his work far less appealing than its scholary reputation would otherwise lead one to believe.

Smalley's own unique contribution is in his view that two heresies are at work in the Johannine community. Some Jewish heretics err on the side of Jesus' humanity, not admitting to his divinity because of Jewish monotheistic concerns, and other proto-Gnostic heretics err in denying his full humanity. The evidence shows no such thing, and all the language of these letters fits just fine with some sort of proto-Gnostic heresy, so the two-heresy view seems unnecessary, though showing such a thing will take some significant work in future commentaries on these letters.

I'm not entirely happy with everything in this commentary, but it stands far above the others available with this much detail on these books. I eagerly await D.A. Carson's commentary in the NIGTC series, which will easily be the best work on these letters. On the more popular level, John Stott's Tyndale volume and Colin Kruse's Pillar commentary will provide some balance to the idiosyncrasies of Smalley, but his attention to detail and interaction with the whole of scholarship will prove invaluable, at least until Carson's book is finally published. Schnackenburg's older commentary could also be quite useful as a more in-depth foil to balance out Smalley.

This volume is currently under revision. I don't know when the second edition will be appearing, but it's supposed to be the next NT volume of the series to be appearing. I'm guessing that it will probably be published in 2007 or 2008.

5 out of 5 stars Lucid scholarly work.......1999-10-05

Like all commentary series, the Word Bibilcal Commentary has it's good and average contributions. This is at the very good end, exegeting the text in detail for the student or pastor, while maintaining clear discussion for the layman.

              Book Description

Dr. Smalley's exhaustive commentary on the Greek text of the letters of John argues that they, together with the Fourth Gospel, record and reflect the spiritual history of the Johannine community itself. These letters contain theological, ethical and practical truths that are fundamental to the Christian position in every age: that Jesus is one with God as well as one with us; that love and righteousness are indispensable to the believer who seeks as a child of God to walk in the light; and that unity, however flexible, is a demand laid upon the whole Church at all times.

This revision of the author's original 1984 commentary is a complete update. Dr. Smalley has revised the text, references, and bibliography to reflect advances in Johannine scholarship.

                Standard paternalistic fluff from
                a fundamentalist perspective.
Smalley is primarily a marriage counselor, and he may have a few good ideas. Overall, however, an extreme religious conservatism colors all of his thinking. Especially noxious is his endless carrying-on about "spanking" in his parenting materials.
Gary is an extreme example of authoritarian Christian parenting-he makes Dr. Dobson seem like Dr. Spock by comparison. If you need pop-psychology advice for relationships or parenting, I would recommend Dr. Phil McGraw by light-years over Gary Smalley.
