I recently purchased a copy of "The New Roger Caras Treasury of Great Horse Stories." The book is a good collection of horse fiction, but I was dismayed to find that the book did not include several of the stories that were described in the listing on Amazon.

The description reads as follows:

This new collection contains pieces by John Steinbeck, D. H. Lawrence, Anna Sewell, C. S. Lewis, and many others. Thorne Smith's "A Horse in Bed" tells the hilarious adventures of a man who is granted his wish to become a horse for a day. Dick Francis's "Spring Fever" illuminates the foibles of the English horseracing circuit.

Unfortunately, several stories mentioned in the description, including those by Dick Francis and Thorne Smith, do not appear in the book.

"There is no denying the fact that man arrived at his present high station in life on the back of a horse." So begins Roger Caras's glimpse into the history and significance of man's most industrious animal. Caras, current president of the ASPCA, provides an extraordinary compilation of twenty-seven classic horse tales, including stories written by well-known authors such as Mark Twain, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Rudyard Kipling. Each story is beautifully written, and wonderfully entertaining. In Mary Wilkins Freeman's "The Doctor's Horse," the reader is introduced to a spirited horse that seems predestined for only one owner, a doctor, whose youthfulness is ignited by the horse's presence. William F. Nolan's "Shadow Quest" follows the relationship between a lonely drifter and a wild horse appropriately named Diablo. And, in J. Lincoln Steffens's "The Old Jim Horse," a fire chief determines the fate of the department's old work horse. This anthology is a great gift book for any horse lover or animal lover. Be sure to check out Caras's companion books, "Roger Caras' Treasury of Great Cat Stories" and "Roger Caras' Treasury of Great Dog Stories."

4 out of 5 stars A treasure trove of great tales for any horse enthusiast!.......2004-05-13

This a very nice anthology of mostly lesser-known horse stories. We've all read about Misty of Chincoteague and Black Beauty and the Black Stallion, so it's nice to see some fresher material. Editor Roger Caras has compiled a collection of twenty-seven tales in every imaginable genre. There are westerns, racing stories, historical fiction, science fiction, mysteries, comedies, satires, a couple spooky stories, and even a few tragedies. Caras has chosen to include mostly stories that are relatively recent. There are a few famous ones, like Rudyard Kipling's "The Maltese Cat" and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes mystery, "Silver Blaze." There are also stories by Mark Twain and Richard Harding Davis, but the majority of the authors are less widely known. Some I had never even heard of. The stories also vary widely in length, some being only a few pages, and the longest spanning over fifty.

The stories included are as follows:

Mark Twain: "A Horse's Tale"
Larry Niven: "The Flight of the Horse"
Richard Harding Davis: "Mr. Travers's First Hunt"
Hugh Johnson: "Levant"
George Pattullo: "The Man-Killer"
Cloudesley Johns: "Skyrocket and the Blue Stuff"
Rudyard Kipling: "The Maltese Cat"
Charles A. Stephens: "Treading Down the Herd's Grass"
Shelly Rider Meyer: "A Mistake In Identity"
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: "Silver Blaze"
Mary Wilkins Freeman: "The Doctor's Horse"
J. Lincoln Steffens: "The Old Jim Horse"
Alvah Milton Kerr: "In Front of the Stampede"
Alfred Stoddard: "Over the Jumps"
H. C. Bunner: "The Cumbersome Horse"
Ellis Parker Butler: "Pete, the Circassian Horse"
F. R. Weir: "The Tale of a Cayuse"
Sewell Ford: "Skipper"
A. W. Rolker: "The Black Roan of 265"
Richard Harding Davis: "The Man Who Could Not Lose"
Zane Grey: "The Horses of Bostil's Ford"
Erle Stanley Gardner: "Carved in Sand
Deborah Moulton: "The Winged Foal"
James Powell: "The Kidnap of Bounding Mane"
William F. Nolan: "Shadow Quest"
Clay Fisher: "The Trap"
Max Brand: "Miniature"

The first story is probably the most tragic and depressing in the book, so upon finishing it I was a bit apprehensive of what the rest would be like, but most of the stories are thoroughly enjoyable. A couple of the pieces are only loosely horse-related, but they're still good tales and I was not sorry to see them included. My personal favorites from this book are Niven's "The Flight of the Horse," a science fiction tale that takes a delightfully humorous turn; Weir's "The Tale of a Cayuse," a touching story in which a horse brings an unlikely couple together; and Brand's "Miniature," where a man faces a choice between a life of luxury, or the horse he loves. There are a few duds ("The Kidnap of Bounding Mane" is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read, and "The Winged Foal" seems as if someone chopped the first chapter out of a disturbing sci-fi / fantasy novel and left out the rest of the story), but on the whole it's a great book. The stories are all well-written and easy to read, and I'd definitely recommend this collection to any horse lover.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully pieced together.......2000-03-10

I think this book was beauifully written. The stories were so detailed that I felt as if I were there and able to touch these wonderful creatures. The stories were so powerful and moving I actually found myself crying from one of them. I think anyone who is as much of a horse lover as I am should definitely read this book. I am very proud to say that I own it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for reading aloud material.......1999-03-30

I fell in love with the Nathaniel Hawthorne entry. I had forgotten what truly great writing is! This story about a team of polo ponies was so vivid that I wanted to share it with my family. I asked them if I could read it aloud to them, thinking they would say 'yes' because they love me, but that they would wander away at the length. But no, the story even captivated them and I read it aloud to them in one 45 minute sitting. Thank you Roger Caras

5 out of 5 stars This might be the only book on doll clothes you'll ever need........2007-03-13

Before buying this book, I would buy patterns for doll clothes. Sometimes I bought patterns from big companies like Simplicity and sometimes I bought patterns from small outfits. Of course, they were very specific patterns for only a few outfits for only a few limited dolls. Ms. Dodge's book is like owning every pattern for every doll ever created! She provides many basic pattern pieces in a variety of sizes. It will be up to you, however, to design your doll's outfit. Don't worry--the book will show you how! You will also make your own custom pattern pieces in order to get the right fit. This book covers baby dolls, girl dolls and even boy dolls. The only doll that is not represented is the womanly-figured modern fashion doll, but once you have mastered what is covered in this book, you will be able to dress those dolls too. The author provides lots of good, detailed photos and beautiful line drawings of possible outfits to inspire you. My confidence in dressing dolls has increased a hundred-fold. Now I know that if I can dream it, I can achieve it. And you can too!

5 out of 5 stars Detailed, clear and complete.......2007-01-04

Detailed patterns, clear explanations and completed with the needed illustrations. Also some tips to modify the lengths of the patterns or to adapt the suggested model in order to create other dresses. Well done.
I was looking since a while for these kind of books till I discovered the Amazon.com and his large choice of books related to 'Dolls' dresses and furniture and am very satisfied about the quality of their service and deliveries.

5 out of 5 stars Best doll clothes' pattern book ever?.......2005-09-18

Excellent book with beautiful pictures. Leaves plenty of room to your own creativity. Desciptions are straightforward. It's hard for me to say if it would be good for beginners, since I'm trained in dressmaking and patternmaking, but it seems easy to figure out. I can't think of any book I'd rather use when making doll clothes - it has everything.

5 out of 5 stars User Friendly Instructions.......2005-09-17

Book offers a wide range of details and styles that are described in an easy to follow format. Patterns are not difficult and user friendly.

      I Very Highly recommend.

            Book Description

The Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California, are a remarkable showcase of exotic plants from all over the world, and this lavishly illustrated volume depicts many of the most unusual and beautiful specimens. The introduction tells the fascinating story of Henry E. Huntington's development, during the first two decades of the twentieth century, from railroad and real-estate magnate to one of Southern California's leading philanthropists, and the transformation of his self-supporting working ranch into a world-class botanical garden.
Today the 206-acre estate comprises fifteen specialized gardens filled with 20,000 different kinds of plants, with as many as 1,800 rose species and cultivars, 1,200 camellia cultivars, and 5,000 cacti and succulents. Themed gardens are devoted to roses, camellias, subtropical, Australian, and jungle plants, as well as palms, bamboo, and water lilies. Especially popular with visitors are the desert and Japanese gardens. The book presents a comprehensive look at these astonishingly diverse plantings, from towering landmark trees to minuscule rare desert succulents, many pictured in the book's 270 color photographs.

4 out of 5 stars Great souvenir and resource for the gardens.......2002-02-02

I visited the Huntington Museum in Pasadena last July not expecting all that much but was most impressed. I particularly enjoyed the scope and variety of their botanical gardens and so bought this book to remind myself of what I'd seen and also to learn more about the background of the gardens and how they came to be.

I was disappointed in no respect. The book provides historical photographs as well as an account of how Henry Huntington both earned his wealth and used it to establish this marvelous place. It goes on to provide sumptuous photographs of all parts of the gardens, covering both what's there and how they were established. Detail on the desert section and the Japanese section (my two favorites) were particularly appreciated. My only quibble is that a chapter on the notable trees is saved for the end, rather than covering the trees along with the location they belong to. This seems rather odd but is a minor note.

All in all, this book is a splendid souvenir and resource for the gardens of Huntington.

As author you have listed the photographer instead of the writer. The author should be Walter Houk, as you will discover on the title page.

                Book Description

This year the Huntington celebrates the centennial of its spectacular desert garden, one of the largest such collections of cacti and other succulents in the world. Visitors to the twelve-acre garden marvel at its more than 3,000 species, including the vivid blue and green Puya, a rare type of bromeliad; the Lithops, or "living stone," whose camouflaged leaves mimic the shape and color of rocks; and the dazzling red, orange, and yellow torch-like blooms of the winter-flowering aloe.
In this beautifully illustrated volume, Lyons draws on decades of experience with these unusual specimens to explore the Huntington's desert garden. He tells of its early development, describes its principal collections, and gives instructions on the care and landscaping of desert gardens.

This book is both an illustrated history of the early years of a now celebrated garden and cultural institution and an intimate and revealing memoir of Henry Edwards Huntington, written by the man who was hired in 1906 to manage the property and landscape the grounds. Included are many historical photographs showing the development of the Huntington estate and the gardens.

                              Book Description

Teenager Danae Jacobson, an exciting new voice in young adult publishing, offers insights and asks questions gleaned from a perceptive and refreshingly simple view of the world around her. In a debut book, Things I've Learned Lately, her short essays on the life lessons she's experienced discuss everything from love and relationships to the meaning of seasons and of death. Chapters include "Midnight Laughing Cleanses You," "There Is a Time for Everything," and "The Stars Shine Brighter When There Is No Moon." Danae explores simple truths such as, "Forgiving someone is proof of your love," and, "Coincidences are really 'God-things,'" offering an honest, hopeful approach to young people who, like herself, are striving to match the challenges of life with a firm faith.

5 out of 5 stars A young voice that gives fresh perspective to her generation.......2002-01-01

I saw this in the bookstore and after looking through it, bought it for my cousin who's turning 16. I like how Danae shares her life experiences and how she sees God throughout them. I think because it's written by a young woman it will touch the younger generation in a way that other books can't. I hope this encourages my cousin to look at life in the same way.

5 out of 5 stars Encouragement during trying times from generation youth.......2001-11-19

It seems lately we do not hear enough encouraging words from todays young people.. if author Danea Jacobson has anything to do with it that will all change. Danea's book is a quick, inspiring read for people of all walks of faith. Whether she is reflecting on family, friends or the future her outlook is always positive. That is something our society never has enough of especially from the MTV generation. Although raised in a family with strong values, Danea admits to the same confusion and struggle all people have encountered through life. This book would be a great read for parents and teens especially those going through the tough teen years. There are plenty of positvie thoughts and quotes throughout this book Danea seems to always find a silver lining in every cloud.
