A very good book for the Novice.......2006-04-20
An excellent book for someone like me who is getting started in woodworking. The skill building sections are very good. Having built a couple of the projects, I've found the directions to be complete and accurate. Maybe some of the critical steps could have received bold type or more emphasis.

Book Description
At a time when more and more travelers are discovering Cuba, which has been locked away from the outside world for more than 40 years, this lavishly illustrated, absorbing volume offers a completely different view of the island from the one seen by most visitors. This book presents not the picturesque Cuba of Castro's era with its derelict buildings and peeling paint, but the opulent world of the Spanish Creole aristocracy of the colonial period, which has continued to influence Cuban taste and cultural life on a more modest scale even to this day.
Emphasizing the palatial homes and elegant furnishings of the island's enormously rich sugar, cotton, and tobacco barons, Cuban Elegance relates the social, cultural, architectural, and interior design history of Cuba, and of the Caribbean region in general. With an engaging text and gorgeous photographs taken especially for this sumptuous volume, Cuban Elegance offers a fresh, surprising perspective on an intriguing country.

Cuban Elegance.......2007-09-26
Cuban Elegance is a great book, has wonderful photography and dipicts the elegant decore of Cuba and its architecture as well.
AWESOME!!!.......2007-08-16
THIS IS IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL BOOK. THE PICTURES ARE BEAUTIFUL, THE TEXT REGARDING EACH ONE IS VERY CLEAR. IT HAS A GOOD FLOW AND MAY I DARE SAY IT IS A SEXY BOOK? IF THERE IS SUCH A THING. I WOULD RECOMMEND EVERYONE AND ANYONE TO GET IT. WHEATHER YOU'RE CUBAN OR NOT.
IT HELPS POINT OUT ALL THE BEATY THAT ONCE USED TO BE AS WELL AS THE ONE LEFT NOW AMIDST ALL THE DECAY AND ABANDONEMENT CURRENTLY AFFECTING THE ISLAND COUNTRY. I LOVED IT.
The Best of Cuba in a book........2007-04-16
I recently bought this book and despite that I had never being in Cuba before this is better than the real thing. Cuba was one the biggest economies in the region and such growth gave the possibility to create one of the most selected elites in the Caribbean islands. That prestige and class is all what you can find in this book full of excellent pictures. The reading of the book is pleasant, accurate and, full of details. I was amaze by the work around Cuban furniture which reflects the passion of the author in the topic. It's worth 5 out 5 starts with any doubts.
Colourful Cuba.......2006-02-08
This is a great coffee table book of good quality. The colour photographs are excellent, accompanied by descriptive text. I bought it out of a sense of curiosity of how the more affluent Cubans might live. Unfortunately, as it turns out, I don't generally share their taste in design or dark furniture, but don't let that put you off an excellent and informative book.
Astonishing.......2004-10-01
Cuban Elegance is an astonishing work. That Michael Connors and Bruce Buck were able to navigate the bureaucracies to get to Cuba and to the subjects of the book; astonishing that with an admitted paucity of research material they were able to craft a book that reveals the wealth of historic artifacts in Cuba.
Connors' concise, comprehensive and well-researched narrative along with Bruce Buck's beautiful images bring to light the stylistic and historical influences of three centuries of Cuba's heritage.
Kudos to both gentleman for what must have been an arduous task. The fruits of their labors is a book that should be an elegant addition to a great many libraries.

Book Description
In this eye-opening celebration, gorgeous photgraphs from the world of la seduction francaise, including movies, advertisements, fashion shoots, and revealing images of the most renowned beauties and cultural icons of the century-Bridget Bardot, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Madonna, and more- illustrate the fascinating story of French lingerie.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative, beautifully illustrated.......2004-10-09
I think some of the other reviewers missed the point of this book. It's not a "what to wear" guide; it's not an in-depth historical treatise, and it's not soft-core porn. Actually, this book is a really good overview of lingerie and how it's tied in with social trends and ideals of women's bodies over the years. If the photos are titillating, it's because lingerie itself has an erotic side to it, and it's often photographed in a way that enhances that aspect, which is appealing both to men (who see it) and women (who wear it). The photos are beautiful and sexy and add to the appeal of the book - and I'm a heterosexual female. But the text is what's really interesting. I found myself unable to put it down, and it's caused me to think about undergarments in a whole new way.
Somewhat interesting.......2000-12-12
Like most women, I enjoy dressing seductively and sexy for my partner. From garter belts, to satin gowns, to thongs and one piece little see throughs, they're all beautiful. The book has nice illustrations and talks about lingerie from the early days to now, but the book does not cover all the basics. The book, in my opinion is worth reading if you want to know the basics on lingerie, nothing else. As a part-time model, I have found that lingerie does not fit all women, even if they have flawless bodies. This book does nothing to suggest what would look better on tall women, skinny women or women with large/small breasts. I did like the book, but I felt like it was very basic and missing alot of useful information.
Intelligent prose on history undergarments..........2000-05-09
I'm not sure what others consider titillating material, but this book certainly is not out for the quick, cheap thrill (and that's a good thing). The text describes the changing fashions over the years, and the improvements in materials which allowed those changes in many cases. The pictures range from gritty, authentic b/w "early pioneer style" to 1960's variety to the obligatory Victoria's Secret model shots. There is no shame in appreciating the few photographs which one might consider slightly arousing, and the text is an interesting read. My girlfriend very much enjoyed receiving this book as a surprise gift, which we then read together.
I'm Not the Market for This Book.......1999-12-07
As a heterosexual female costumer, I'm always looking for a solid book on underclothing that is not primarily designed to titillate a male audience. Sadly, this isn't it.

Book Description
In a famous intersection of fashion and literature, the popularity of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther provoked hundreds -- perhaps thousands -- of young Germans to purchase and wear the blue and yellow suit of the novel's protagonist. Their actions not only showed their affinity with Werther and with other wearers of the blue and yellow, but also elevated cultural identification over more traditional elements of social standing, such as employment, education, region, or family. Even aristocratic Prussians forsook their riding garb for Werther's rustic suit.
In The Tyranny of Elegance, Daniel Purdy examines the coming of bourgeois fashion (Mode) and luxury consumerism (Luxus) to eighteenth-century Germany. The liberation symbolized by Werther's suit was illusory, he explains, as fashion itself quickly became a force for conformity as rigid as the sumptuary laws -- such as clothing ordinances -- of earlier centuries. Purdy examines the extraordinary influence of Frederick Bertuch's Mode Journal, which chronicled in obsessive detail the clothing and decorative trends in London, Paris, and other European capitals. He traces the elite reaction against fashion that followed the example of the king, Frederick the Great, who dressed poorly -- in worn and even dirty clothes -- to separate himself from the francophile fastidiousness typical of absolutist armies. The changing notions of personal appearance that swept Europe at the end of the eighteenth century, Purdy concludes, were more than simply new styles reflecting new political ideologies -- they indicated a fundamental shift in the epistemology of the subject and the body.

A small treasure to carry around.......2002-07-11
This little book of Sargent paintings is small enough to fit in the palm of one's hand, but in this case, size does not matter. I was drawn by this book's cover at the M.H. de Young Museum in San Francisco in late 2000, and was urged to by it by my art craving mind. I have to admit that it did have a few works of his I had not seen, so it is valuable in the sense to some die-hard fans (which I pretty much am of his). Like in the other reviews, this book is printed on great quality paper, has a dust jacket, and has a mini- biography with some different views on his life. It also has a detailed list in the back describing each painting shown. I believe it doesn't have a B/w photo, but I am not certain. Nevertheless, it is worth the small price. And, if you're a big fan of his, it never hurts to have a minature Sargent book to carry along :)
"A 'Sargent' is always a Sargent.".......2001-08-19
OK, so I plagiarize the common saying, "A 'Rembrandt' is not always a Rembrandt." But that is not the point. My points actually are the following:
1) This is a very small book (pocket edition) to present lifesize paintings (for the most part, anyway) done by Sargent. Therefore, some limitations are inevitable.
2) This book simply presents 100 paintings (including some drawings) by Sargent with occasionally some comments by different patrons. The book does NOT discuss the technical or historical aspect of the paintings, except for a biography of 8 pages in the back of the book.
3) If you are, like myself, hoping to have a little book of paintings (at an affordable price) by Sargent to quickly look up the way colors were used in his portraits, then this book serves the purpose. After all, "A 'Sargent' is always a Sargent.", no matter how small is it presented. However, if you are looking for more than a collection of small paintings, other books on Sargent of larger volume may be called for.
But what about scale?.......2001-07-11
One of the magical aspects of the portraits of John Singer Sargent is his cholce of scale. At times his Grande Dames were painted larger than life, his bon vivants narrow and elongated like the models themselves. Here all is compressed into home photograph size, as though these were taken during a visit to an exhibition in a crusty museum. But the joy of having so many of Sargent's elegant people greatfully reproduced in rich color and on fine quality paper makes the size more tolerable. And it is fitting to have the "commentary" be conversational Henry James parcels, since they were very close friends. This is not the definitive Sargent book, but until the price of the larger volumes is more accessible, this little book is a joy.
Review: The Age of Elegance : ..........2001-06-28
The Age of Elegance : The Paintings of John Singer Sargent by John Singer Sargent is another very affordable book...
(Note: this is virtually a picture book.)
Sargent was well-known for his portraiture, and this book contains his elegant, famous oil paintings (including the one of Madame X). Zoom-ins/ups of paintings are overleaf (for nearly every painting). Quotes taken from numerous novels and papers by Sargent's very close friend Henry James, accompany the art works.
My only "complaint" is that a lot of these paintings are the more familiar ones. In other words, if you are a "fan" or own one of those expensive art books, more than likely you have seen the paintings which are showcased in this book. Also, a few of James' quotes get a bit long (but the rest fit the mood;)...
Other than that, there isn't really *anything* to lose! The cover has the title stamped in gold foil, and the paper is thick and glossy!
So... What are you waiting for?
Very Elegant and Informative Book.......2001-03-24
This book takes you into the rarefied world of elegance that typified the Gilded Age (1880-1920). Sargent has done an excellent job in portraying the lives of affluent individuals, especially the women. The men are portrayed as strong and stable. Women are painted as ultrafeminine reflections of their father's or husband's wealth and power. The Gilded Age represent the possiblities of upward mobility as exemplified by Andrew Carnegies, the Guggenheims, the Rockefellers, and the Browns(as in Molly Brown, whose husband struck rich out west in the 1890's). I recommend those who are interested in the artworks of the Gilded Age to read this book, it's interesting.

Best book I've read on motherhood yet.......2002-02-01
How I wish I could give this book ten stars! If you're tired of hearing about the Mommy Wars and want to read about women who've somehow managed to balance work and motherhood, this is the book for you. Susan Lewis clearly is coming from the assumption that we all love our kids, and we all have unique gifts to present to the world, but unfortunately the reality is that we live in a culture that doesn't have a lot of respect for parenthood--or for women's choices, for that matter. You know how it goes--if you stay home with the kids, you're an underachiever; if you have a full time job, you're self-centered, if you work part-time so that you can be there for your kids, well you have to be screwing up both jobs then, right? :) Lewis interviewed ten women like herself, all of whom gave up full-time high-powered careers to spend time with their children. Some downshifted to part time, some switched to a less demanding career, some just gave up a career altogether. What these women have to say about the decisions they made really surprised me and inspired me, and often made me laugh. Lewis herself cracked me up with her descriptions of being available for monosyllabic teenage boys, or being humbled by her utter failure at baking a batch of brownies from a mix.
I also think this would be a great book for any young woman who wants to "have it all" to read. It really does give a realistic picture of both worlds, work and home, and helps you think think creatively, and sensibly (love how Lewis, before she got pregnant, thought that the first year of her baby's life would be a great time to sail around the world!). Yes, combining motherhood and career can be done, but as these women show, you've got to be creative, you've got to be true to your instincts, and you shouldn't give a hoot about whether you've got a glamorous enough self-description to impress people at cocktail parties!
If you're a new mom and an old "professional", read this!.......2000-03-16
If you are struggling with how to manage your career AND love your baby AND nurture your family, read this book! It's like talking to a best friend who understands who you were before you had a baby and what you feel now. I am still struggling with "what to do next"...this book empowered me to do what's best for me (not based on anyone else's "should do's").
Ms. Lewis has a great writing style...easy to read with thoughtful stories. I stay up late at night (or get up before the baby wakes up) just to get another chapter read.
An excellent book for mothers struggling to "do it all"........1999-07-19
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Lewis tells us how women have coped with the biggest life altering experience of all...motherhood. I wish it was available when my first child was born. I felt so alone juggling to combine motherhood with a career. The anecdotes in the book are so funny because they are real. It feels like a chat with your closest friends telling you what was the "last straw" incident that forced them to make changes. What is most interesting about the book is the variety of solutions that women came up with. There are no right or wrong answers because every family is unique. Having the insight on what changes others have made will get you thinking creatively.
An insightful and humorous book about motherhood........1999-05-01
Susan Lewis is the Erma Bombeck of the babyboomer generation! She is a brilliant writer who has managed to weave together the stories of many different women to make a very strong statement. It is not just about "staying home", it is a book that will be enjoyed and provide insight to every mother, past present and future. I wish I had read this book 15 years ago when I was pregnant with my first child! A timely gift for Mother's Day, there is hardly a woman on the planet that cannot relate to this book. Susan E. Lewis has a wonderful writing style that weaves humor throughout making this a thoroughly enjoyable read. Fathers would also benefit and enjoy this book
Not the life we expected when our careers came first . . ........1999-04-19
When I walked away from a prestigious, well paid career a decade ago, I knew it was merely in order to take a "sabbatical." With two young children, I feared I might lack the stamina to launch into a new position in the investment industry, where I'd spent the prior 17 years. When they were in school all day . . . that would be the time to jump in again . . . Skip to 1999. I've not yet jumped back in, but I've learned a tremendous amount about paid work vs. volunteer work and how a frantic pace compares with a busy, but manageable, workaday stride. I've learned that there are still pointless and destructive preconceptions on both sides of the working/non-working mother issue. Though I felt somewhat unique during the early years of this transition, I apparently had plenty of company. Susan Lewis, author of "Reinventing Ourselves after Motherhood" was obviously sharing my experience. She, however, took the time to write a wonderful book about all of us who grew up post-feminist revolution and tremendously conflicted about work/family choices. Through her own often amusing and always insightful anecdotes, and through her gleanings from scores of interviews with mothers of all ages, she has come up with a highly readable narrative. Unlike so many others who've written on the topic, however, Lewis succeeds in evenhandedness. She knows the path she's taken is probably best for her, but doesn't insist that everyone else should be tagging along. This book should be of interest to a wide range of readers, including both mothers at home and mothers at work. (A few enlightened fathers might even be induced to have a look!) It might be most valuable to young women who know these life-altering choices lie just ahead. A satisfying read.
